dare to be bare

May 24, 2012

This weekend marks the official “unofficial” start of summer — Memorial Day weekend! I don’t know about you, but it has already been hot here, and this summer it’s bound to get even hotter.

During the summer, I take on a completely different beauty routine than during the year when I work. I typically go without makeup and rarely dry my hair. I’m a “shower and go” kind of girl in the summer. It give my body a break from clogged pores from makeup and hair breakage from all of the horrible heat I treat my hair with. Even though I tend to wear makeup every day when I go to work, I’ve never been the kind of girl who primps in front of the mirror for hours on end — give me twenty minutes and I’m good to go. I’m not sure if I should be proud of my sometimes sheer laziness that doesn’t want to put effort into drying my hair or putting on makeup, but I’m glad I’m not afraid to go out in public in my barest form.

A few weeks ago, I was given the opportunity from Daily Buzz to try out a few new deodorants from Dove — specifically their Clear Tone line. I was sent the regular clear tone deodorant as well as the clinical protection.

The clear tone products are designed to help correct dark marks on your underarm skin while also keeping you fresh and dry. I’ve tested both deodorants out over the past few weeks, and I have to say I really like them! For some reason I’ve never tried out Dove deodorants because I never thought they would be strong enough to keep this girl from sweating. Seriously, don’t ask me why I had this thought — I have no clue!

Both of the deodorants have great girly flowery smells, which I like. I wouldn’t be lying if I told you I maybe sniffed my armpits just to smell the scent. I’m highly unusual. Even after a few hours of being out in the sun working (remember my gardening excursions?), I was fairly dry and not smelly at all. That’s what I call a win win! The clinical protection definitely works harder than the regular strength. Whenever I wear it, my underarms are freakishly dry.

I was hoping these products would go on clear and not get on my clothes, but that wasn’t the case. I have yet to find a deodorant I like that goes on clear — I’m not a fan of the clear gels. They go on all cold and never seem to dry! I also don’t find that my underarms have dark spots so I can’t say whether or not the clear tone products work in that sense.

Overall, I’m a fan! I’d definitely buy these with my own money in the future.

Question: How will you “go bare” this summer?

As part of the DailyBuzz Healthy Living Program, I received free Clear Tone Deodorant and a stipend from Dove. However, my opinions are entirely my own.

I love Dove products! My husband even steals my deodorant. He claims it works better than any men’s brand! I don’t plan on going bare this summer…..make-up and hair are always part of the routine. I just don’t have that “natural” beauty that other women can rock.

That is hilarious! And I don’t agree with the “no natural beauty” thing! You’re gorgeous!

I go ‘bare’ almost every day. I used to primp for quite a while, but now I stick to eyeliner, mascara and eyeshadow. My face thanks me since I rarely break out anymore. But I am still trying to find a good skin care line as I am not so good w/the whole hydrating, wrinkles stuff…and I am starting to look my age.

I have never bought Dove either–I thought it seemed to ‘girly’ and wouldn’t work. I will have to give it a try.

That’s what I thought too! I was wrong!

I’m the same way in the summertime… Hardly put on makeup and when I do, it’s just some mascara and lip gloss if I’m going out for a night. Funny thing is, even though I walear less makeup and let my hair go wild, I always feel prettiest and more like myself that way!

I like that way you roll! I agree, I feel better about myself without a mask on too!

I wish I could “go bare” more often. If I know I’m going to be at home or just running errands, I leave the make-up off. During the summer, I try to embrace the scrunched curls over blow drying to give it a break too. Luckily, the beach agrees with that hairstyle! ;)

<3 the beach!!!

It’s 70 degrees and not a cloud in the sky today in Boston. Because I work from home I’m tempted to finish up around 12 and hit the beach for the rest of the day! :)

I adore Dove products, they are hands down my favorite. I’m the same way as you in the summer- shower and go! It really is a nice break from the hair dryer and make-up, but it sure does spoil a girl. I try not to take a single day off in the summer for granted.

You should give natural crystal deoderants a try! Much better ingredients (no scary chemicals) and never gets on your clothes!

I’m going bare this summer with a MUCH shorter beauty routine, all mineral make-up, natural shampoo, and a wash and go attitude :)

I’ve never heard of them before! I’ll have to check out the crystal deodorants. Thanks for the tip!

I like their deodorant’s as well– I was just having the conversation the other day with a friend that the Dove doesn’t go on clear, and I seem to always get it on my clothes. I want to be able to find one that doesn’t make any marks either!

I always get any deodorant on my clothes! It’s inevitable!

I’m a fan of Dove soap and deo – got a bunch stocked away in the guest bathroom as we speak (or actually, as I type). I will go bare this summer by wearing a bikini at the lake as often as possible, pretty much every sunny Saturday. The hubs says I’m not allowed to buy a one piece yet anyway, haha!

Reply

cleaneatingchelsey May 24, 2012 at 7:23 pm

I agree – rock the 2 piece!

I’ve always thought that about Dove products too!! I wonder what made us think that haha. I always wear clinical protection type deodorants. I think I must smell like a man or something ;) .

I don’t know – I think maybe we thought they were too “girly” to work? So wrong!

I love Dove. I always buy it at Walgreens in a two-pack, and it lasts me FOREVER.

My summer routine goal is to take better care of my skin. I almost never wear makeup to work (Too zonky in the mornings), though I’m thinking I should. The only problem is no AC in the car, so makeup would just slide off my face. :-( It’s gonna be a hot midwest summer this year (I live in Iowa)!

Yikes – no ac in the car? I would be a mess!!!

It’s getting fixed soon (and cheap!) since I have an extended warranty, but with the weird heat waves going on in the midwest lately, it’s been terrible. :-(

i’m the same way during the summer… mostly because i’m more tan and i can get away with not looking like a ghost without makeup. ha! i also despise doing my hair and makeup. i’ve always wished that i had robot that could do those things for me. anyways, i use regular Dove deoderant. it’s the only stuff that i’ve found that doesn’t give me a rash on my sensitive skin. but i DO sweat like a man, so i should try out that clinical stuff!

I agree – a tan complexion is so forgiving!

I have come to found that Dove works best for me and actually using that same version now, it does a job well done. I usually just wear a tiny bit of make-up to cover up some blemishes, but overall I would say I go for the more natural look year round.

Abby @ Change of Pace May 24, 2012 at 9:40 am

I haven’t tried Dove deodarant yet, but I use their face lotion and love it.
For work I usually just blow dry my hair and throw on a bit of make up. The routine doesn’t take too long, but sometimes I wish I had the energy/want to primp more!

Which face lotion do you use?

Reply

Abby @ Change of Pace May 25, 2012 at 11:34 am

Apparently it’s discontinued in Canada now, but I’m not sure about the States. It’s Dove Deep Moisture Facial Lotion with SPF 15. I loved it. It worked really well with my skin, and I like to have SPF in my facial lotion, too.
I don’t know what I’ll use now!!

Have you ever used Tom’s deoderant? I really like it because it’s natural, and it does go on clear for me … but it’s still a solid vs. a liquid roll-on.

I haven’t! My mom tried it and didn’t like it – I haven’t tried it for myself though.

I guess I stopped really wearing makeup in college, and now hardly ever do. Chapstick is as crazy as it gets over here.
Along the “bare” lines, my weekends are made for air dried hair, sports bras and elastic pants.

I love elastic pants. They are THE BEST!!

I used to love Dove until I switched over to a natural deodorant. I feel super crunchy.

Diane May 25, 2012 at 1:52 pm

I wish I could just wet my hair and head out the door. Not this curly mop! *sigh*

I’m not a fan of the gel deodorants either for the same reason. They take forever to dry and never really feel like they do in the end. Plus, my clothes kind of stick, which isn’t a good feeling.

When you mention brown spots do you mean on your actual underarms or on your clothes. I find that my deodorants (and I’ve tried a few to no avail) tend to damage my white shirts. My armpits turn (on the shirt, tee, or tank top) always turn gray after a while then I can’t wear the shirt any more.

Have you tried crystal stick deo? It is all natural and doesn’t leave any marks :) it actually works too, and I sweat a lot so I have fully tested it out!
