first day jitters

August 23, 2010

Do you remember the first day of the school year? I know for me, I used to pick out my clothes a week in advance, pack my lunch the night before, and put my bags by the front door (double checking to make sure I had everything I needed). I was always excited for the beginning of the school year - a little nervous about what the year had in store, but really looking forward to the year ahead. Things haven’t changed for me. I still pick out my clothes a week in advance, pack my lunch, etc…. One of the perks of being a teacher is I get to relive that moment every year.
One thing my mom made sure of when we were younger is that we ate breakfast before the first day of school. Well Mom, you would be proud… I had a fantastic breakfast this morning! Standard overnight oats were in store for me… peaches, blueberries, coconut, peanut butter, and cinnamon all made the final cut.

the peaches have grown on me

Remember when I was afraid of peaches in my oats? Well, not afraid… just not a fan? They’ve grown on me…. a lot.

too early for good light

I ate breakfast with the husband this morning - it was weird.

I have to get over the fact that I don’t like to talk to anyone/be near anyone early in the morning. ::sigh:: The joys of marriage.

The school day (half day) went by so fast! So far, so good… I even got a couple of presents!

some first day gifts - minus the popsicle sticks! :)

Flowers and a coffee mug! The popsicle sticks are for when students refuse to participate… each stick has someone’s name on it!

I read some blogs and ate my lunch in my classroom - a bunch of teachers went out for lunch, but I am limiting myself to one lunch out per week. That money adds up really fast!

I had leftover vegetarian paella

vegetarian paella

and a few crunchier items.

pink lady apple, some kind of pepper and a grape tomato swiped from the lounge

I was in meetings for the majority of the afternoon, and when I got out, I snacked on these carrots. By the way… when you were younger, did it ever occur to you that teachers had meetings while you got the afternoon off? Until I started to teach, I never really thought about it. Now, I know the truth… and I wish I was still a student sometimes.

crunchy craving around 2

I went for a run around 3:30 - my brain was absolutely fried and I needed the time away from my classroom and computer. I did about 3.5 miles in 30 minutes. I was rolling! My legs felt a little heavy for the first mile (they were sore from that 10 miler) but after that, I was good to go!

Before I went, I had half of this larabar…

pre and post run fuel

and I ate the other half after. I wanted to have this as my morning snack, but have discovered a child in my classroom has a severe nut allergy. Nuts cannot even be IN THE CLASSROOM - he will react to them if they are in the room. An epi-pen lives in my desk, and I really feel for him! Now, do I wish I could eat nuts at my leisure? Of course… but I’ll make a sacrifice from 8-3.

I stopped at Whole Foods on the way to dinner with my family (my sister’s birthday) and picked up a bunch of loot, including Glee Gum! I was really excited about it,…

i was not impressed.

until I chewed it for 2 minutes. Has anyone ever had braces? Do you remember the wax you had to put on the braces? That’s what this gum tasted like. It definitely did not live up to the hype. I’m trying to wean myself off of gum - I am an addict, but I know the chemicals and artificial sweeteners aren’t good for me. A piece every once in a while is fine, but I’ve been known to go through a pack a day! Whoops….

The first day of school wouldn’t be complete without a birthday dinner for my sister! Her birthday always seemed to fall on the first day of school growing up… poor kid!

Her choice… Olive Garden.

capturing some of summer's last moments

It was fun to catch up with everyone - I ate salad and broccoli (delicious, but not fillling… obviously). That is honestly the only things I can have on that menu. If you’re new around here, I’m a vegetarian… but also gluten, corn and dairy free. It makes eating out very difficult. Chain restaurants and I don’t really get along too well.

So, when I got home…. I unloaded my loot from WF’s and made myself a huge snack.

notice the CHIA!!!!

It was more than delicious… and now I want to go check on my overnight oats WITH CHIA! (Can you tell I’m pumped?)

Question: What was your favorite lunch to bring to school when you were younger? Were you a hot lunch kid? A brown bagger? Did you have a fav. lunch box?

when i was younger, i always wished that my mom would just pack me lunchables! that was the cool thing to have. alas, my mom believed they were completely un-nutritious and would pack me these fancy bento set lunches with rice, veggies, and some kind of meat. sometimes she’d pack spaghetti or even soba noodles!! sometimes sushi… in retrospect , i am completely grateful and can’t believe i ever wanted something different, but back then, i was embarassed that my lunch was sooo different than everyone else’s!

I feel so bad for the kid! A girl on my gymnastics team would instantly know if there was peanuts with in a 50 foot distance. lol. She was like a dog, but she could sniff out peanuts.

I was a hot lunch girl. I actually got the relatively balanced meal with a meat, veggies and starch instead of just pizza and tatertots which most kids got.

I loved the first day of school up until 11th grade - then I just started getting tired of school. The best part about the first day of school for me was that “school smell” that lasted through the first week…I don’t know, my schools always had a certain smell, haha!

My fav. school lunch was (LOL) bologna and cheese sandwiches which I always stuffed w/ BBQ chips.

Yay for Chia Seeds! Have fun with them :)
My lunches were pretty standard: sandwich, cut up veggies, fruit, yogurt and then dessert would be something like cookies or a brownie :)
I miss my Mommy making my lunch haha Can you believe she STILL makes a lunch for my Dad to take to work everday??

When i was little in elementary school and before i became vegan, i would always have a fluffernutter sandwich! I always thought Fluff was the coolest thing ever. But it’s also the unhealthiest thing ever.. with Potato Bread. Sometimes i’d slab on some goober on Potato Bread for lunch with a juice box or a Capri-Sun. (So sugary!) and package up some graham crackers with chocolate chips and goldfish. The good life.. before the 2000′s.
My lunch now: leftovers from the night before’s dinner.
- A whole grain
- Veggies
- maybe some fruit
- a legume

I’m glad the first day of school went well!

I’ve tried that Glee Gum and I actually like it. :D The flavor I tried was a berry flavor or something.. maybe the spearmint is just faulty?

My favorite snacks to bring to school as a kid were those cheese string things, fruit snacks, cheese and crackers.. juice boxes!

I’m definitely a gum addict too!! I remember I used to think the hot lunches were so good. Looking back now I realize they were probably horrible made and I just happened to think all food was “so good” ha ha I’ve converted to a lunch packer now though!

Probably the first Foodie Blog featuring a night out at the Olive Garden…LOL.

I wonder what the little boy will do on t6he playground? What if one of the other kids in another class has PBJ for lunch and there is some on his hands….etc. You get the pic.

I have heard of schools where nuts are banned school wide (pretty extreme).

Also, I am veruy curious why you do not eat corn. Part of me understands completely why to avoid it (I’ve read) -just curious what your personal beliefs are.

Love your blog! First time commenting…

Hey Missy - Thanks for such a great comment! I think the boy in my class is pretty careful and we are just taking an extra precaution.. and well, I like clean hands in my classroom as well! Thank you for giving me a word of thanks for being a teacher - I love my job so I really enjoy getting good feedback.

I’m glad you decided to give up your comment virgininity on my blog! :)

I don’t eat corn because I’m intolerant to it. Just like the gluten, it gives me horrible digestive side effects. I have a strong belief it has a lot to do with the fact that I was overfed it my entire life as it is in EVERYTHING

I hate eating breakfast with anyone…I need total peace and quiet while I eat because I run around like a chicken the rest of the morning. Now that I’ve been married forever I have no problem letting the husband know that!

I was homeschooled until high school! So I never really packed a lunch… once I got to high school, I would usually pack cereal, a granola bar, and some fruit! Kind of lame… but I wasn’t very creative!

I like a quiet morning too. I tend to get into a routine, and if it gets broken, it’s hard for me to be ready on time.

My mom used to pack my lunches, which always consisted of a sandwich, fruit, some chips, and a cookie. Usually the sandwiches were peanut butter and jelly or turkey and cheese.

I hate having to interact with people in the mornings too! I need an hour just to do my thang and wake up properly before I can be around people. :P

I always had turkey sandwiches with veggies, an apple, and maybe a cookie. I was always so jealous of the kids who got Dunkaroos and Gushers and Fruit Roll Ups in their lunches!

I used to think that peaches in oatmeal was a little strange, too. Fortunately, I came over my hesitation. Now it’s one of my (uh, many) favorite toppings!
