baby makes three

December 23, 2010

Yesterday, the Husband and I found out we would becoming parents very soon. Surprise, shock, joy… those were all on my list of emotions.

As well as “Am I ready for this kind of responsibility? Babies are a lot of work. Oh boy, what have I gotten myself into?”

We have gone back and forth on our options, but we couldn’t be happier. We are definitely ready to take on the world as parents.

Meet Charlie everyone! Our newest addition. He is an eight month old Pit-bull mix, and apparently, he loves his new bed.

Is your heart pounding a little bit? Did you begin to hyperventilate when you saw the word “baby”? I was going for that. If not, pretend like it happened because I like to be humored.

The Husband and I have been talking about getting a pup for a while now, but were never sure when the right time was. I think it’s kind of like children – no time is the right time, but you’ve just got to buckle in and get ready for the ride.

We went to a local PAWS yesterday and absolutely fell in love with Charlie. He was even tempered and calm even when we walked by his cage. We had to see him!

After Charlie Brown (we’re nixing the Brown part of his name by the way) came out to greet us, he knew exactly what to do to win me over. All he had to do was give me a hug and a few kisses, and I was won. Like father, like son….

We began the adoption process not thinking we would be able to take him home last night. With Pit-bulls, they like to do a home check to make sure he will be living in the right living conditions (nice family, large yard) due to the history of people training Pits to be a mean bunch. Luckily for us, Charlie does not have one OUNCE of mean in him. He hasn’t even barked yet!

Thankfully, the woman at PAWS knew the Husband, and we were able to forgo the home check. We were able to take him right then and there! Needless to say, we had some shopping to do.

Other than an accident in Petsmart (due to extreme excitement) and an exciting meeting with the grandparents and uncle (another dog!), Charlie made his way home without any trouble.

We took my aunt’s and Cesar’s advice on taking him for a short walk before we entered our home, and Charlie has not looked back since. He is definitely a ball of energy and will be needing some obedience training for jumping and learning how to take walks, but he is doing so well. I couldn’t even believe he slept in his crate the entire night without an accident OR crying!

My favorite part was telling my family. My parents didn’t fall for the “are you ready to become grandparents” routine, but my sister and bestie sure fell for the “are you ready to become an auntie” line. Oh man, was it fun to play with their minds.

Time to go cuddle with my baby now – Charlie thinks he’s a lapdog! Goodness, that won’t be so good when he’s 70 pounds!

Question: Do you have any pets? Any advice for this new mommy?

Charlie is adorable, Congratulations!

My best puppers advice is to enroll in an obedience course. Not only do you learn some valuable stuff, it’s a great way to bond with your boo and have him interact with other pups!

eeeek, oh my word, this post was so exciting for me!! haha. I definitely get more “awwww”-y and excited with animal “babies” than human babies, haha. I have always wanted a pit bull or rottweiler, and since our insurance company won’t let us have a “bully breed,” I now get to live vicariously through you :) Charlie is absolutely gorgeous Chelsey, and I have no doubt that you and the hubs will give him the unconditional love he deserves. He’s going to be one lucky boy!

I’ve never heard of an insurance company not letting families get a certain type of dog! It amazes me because he is such a good boy!

He is adorable! And such a little cuddler! Congratulations and props for adopting! I have my own little man Tiger, an orange medium-hair cat. The only advice I have is to give him lots of love and attention <-I need to be a little better on that one myself!

Awwwwww, congrats!!!!!!!!! This is fantastic and you and hubby will make incredible parents. Hmmm, words of advice. ROUTINE!!! I think the best advice I can give any new dog owner is to establish a routine as early as you can. Puppies need this more than you will realize.

Thanks for all the fun posts, I’ve been following you for a while!

My husband and I got a puppy after our wedding, two years ago. Our baby is also a pit mix. I know that you are probably getting advice left and right, but I can’t help but share the two most important words of wisdom with you:

1) Crate Train (also, teach your dog to “go to his house,” on command… )
2) Easy Walk - this is a twenty dollar harness. It seems like a lot of money. but trust me, this helps in the dog walking department. Two years later, we still have one…

Anyhow, he’s adorable. Congratulations! Have fun with him! And thanks for the great food posts. You are definitely helping to keep me entertained this dark Alaskan winter :)

Oh my goodness, CUTE. I am so excited for you. I just adore my little girl. You are going to have so much fun & be such a great mommy.
Socialize. Introduce him to lots of people & lots of other animals. Don’t be afraid to correct [or instruct] people when you are training him. People used to be the worst about letting Eisley jump on them because she is a small dog & it’s “not a big deal”, but I didn’t want her to jump on anyone. It’s hard for me to tell people to do or not do something.
The most important thing to keep in mind: every time you interact, you learn something about him & HE learns something about YOU — so love only, which I know you will. ;)

I was confused until I saw there was a picture of an adorable puppy below. Charlie just melts my heart by looking at him. I can only imagine how sweet and adorable he is in person! I used to have 2 dogs, but we had to give them to my dad’s friends when my dad got too busy at work. It was the best decision for the dogs, but it was REALLY hard on me because I loved them so much. I definitely want to get a dog when I’m older and can take care of it well.

Have a lovely day!

You are a beautiful parsnickety little trick fairy.
“Is your heart pounding a little bit? Did you begin to hyperventilate when you saw the word “baby”? I was going for that.”

YOU WIN.

However, the let down was quickly replaced by abundantly good news so you do have good timing for a meanie trick….

SO CUTE.

Advice? Buy those puppy pee pads they sell…my dog came old but my friend swears by them. Her dog will stir in the middle of the night and she says “go to you pee pad” and he does! Even in his old age! And so duing rainstorms and (snowstorms though we dont have them in Florida) they are bound to come in handy.

Congrats!! That is so exciting and he is adorable!
My dog was a rescue, and I think adopting a dog is definitely the way to go. My only advice is to make sure you’re super strict. My dog, although adorable, has a major attitude with other dogs. Its a problem, and if I had been more strict with her (instead of cutting her major slack because she was abused) I would be able to actually take her places. It was quite the surprise too. For the first month we had her, we never once heard her voice. Then we ran into a chiuahua wearing a pink hoodie at Petsmart, and something snapped. lol
