Today’s guest post comes from Emily @ One Sweet Vegan. She is an amazing woman — mommy, blogger, and friend — and she just made my life a little more complete by providing me with a FUN new gluten free recipe to try! I’m also posting over on Emily’s blog today — go check it out!
Hi! My name is Emily Sweet and I blog over at One Sweet Vegan. I’m excited to be Chelsey’s guest today.
At my blog, you’ll find all kinds of recipes including vegetable quiche, Portobello mushroom “steak”, polenta lasagna, veggie sushi, soups, sandwiches, pizzas, casseroles, my favorite childhood oatmeal raisin cookies, and much, much more. You’ll also find stories about me, my boys (Jadon-12 and Pryce-3), and my husband (a.k.a. Sweet Daddy).
Today I thought I’d share a recipe perfect for the upcoming St. Patrick’s Day. And, in keeping with Chelsey’s gluten free lifestyle, I made this recipe gluten free as well as vegan.
Irish Soda Bread
Adapted from a recipe in Something Extra
Serves 8
· 1 cup brown rice flour
· 2/3 cup unsweetened almond or soy milk
· 1 Tbsp. white vinegar or lemon juice
· 1/2 cup raisins
· 1/3 cup potato starch
· 1/3 cup tapioca flour
· 1/4 cup vegetable oil
· 1 Tbsp. sugar
· 2 tsp. xanthan gum
· 2 tsp. whole caraway seeds (optional)
· 1 tsp. sea salt
· 1 tsp. baking powder
· 1/2 tsp. baking soda
· 1/2 Tbsp. agar-agar flakes or 1/2 tsp. agar-agar powder
· 1 egg substitute (mixed with water according to package instructions)
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside.
Add all ingredients to a large bowl and mix with a hand mixer.
Transfer to a lightly floured surface and knead several times. It’ll be sticky and seem too wet, but don’t worry. Shape into a round loaf and place on baking sheet, flattening slightly. Cut an X in the top with a knife.
Bake at 350 degrees F for 50 minutes.
Spread some Earth Balance on top and share with the little Leprechauns in your life.
I’ve enjoyed guest posting today. Don’t forget to come visit me at www.OneSweetVegan.com
Question: Do you have any St. Patrick’s Day treats you enjoy? I used to make my brother “green” milk when we were younger.
PS — The Husband has agreed to do a Q&A for the blog — ASK AWAY! What is something you want to know? How he deals with me on a daily basis? If he likes my healthy lifestyle? If his eating habits have changed since we’ve gotten married? How much longer until he will combust if he has to eat more beans? The sky is the limit!!

I plan to make all of my food green on St. Patrick’s Day this year
I would like to - but I’ll use spinach to make it green because I refuse to use food dyes.
This sounds fantastic!!
I don’t think I’ve ever had Irish Soda Bread but it looks SO good all buttered up like that! Yummmm
oh wow, thank you emily for this recipe. I needed a good GF bread recipe!
I love Irish Potatoes. It’s a sweet treat so I know they aren’t good for me, but since I only eat them once a year I figure it’s okay
Wow-I’m impressed. This looks fantastic! I love Irish soda bread.
I had a fun time guest post swapping with you, Chelsey.
And, your comment at the end about your husband and beans-is it ALL guys who don’t like beans, or just our husbands? Mine complains on an almost daily basis.
wow that looks good!
I always look forward Irish Soda bread. My mom used to make it all the time. We also used to get little gifts from the leprechauns in school
That looks super delicious!!
I can’t believe its almost Saint Patty’s Day!! Eek time flies, love the bread idea!
This looks awesome, especially with the melty butter on it! Green beer is always a favorite of mine for St. Patty’s
I’m Irish and St. Pat’s Day is huge in my family so I’m so excited to find a vegan recipe for soda bread!
Also, I would love to hear your husband address ALL of the questions!
I love this! I am Irish, and my family always had Irish soda bread for St. Patty’s Day. I’ll definitely try this recipe.

In college, I used to love getting the shamrock shakes at McDonalds. I’ll have to try and create my own, healthy version!
Thanks for introducing us to Emilt…Hi Emily!
Chels—
I read your post and I have to offer unsolicited advice:
3 tubs of hummus = hmm…$7-$9 dollars?
Three batches of hummus =hmm…$4?
Food for thought. You can even skip the tahini. I actually just gifted myself with a new tahini stash but it lasts forever.
Hope you are doing well…stomachycaffeineythyroidey woes.
Take it easy this weekend!
Get some sushi take-a-way!
It’s just not the same.
The soda bread looks YUM! For your hubbs, I want to know how he “deals” (can’t think of a better word) with the fact that your diets are so different? Does he ever feel resentful or angry? Does it cause problems? Do your eating habits make him want to eat better/healthier too? Exactly how different are your eating habits, anyway?
this is what I was trying to get at put don’t know how to put it. How does he handle the fact that your diet is so different from everyone else’s? I really don’t mean this to sound rude at all cause believe me, to say my diet is different would be an understatement. I guess we’re more so in the same boat and since my brothers slash other males look at me like I have ten heads I was wondering how your Hubs handles/views it. In fact, my brother always asks, “Why do you order to weird?” Lovely.
Wow, that looks like it contains gluten! Very impressive!
I LOVE IRISH SODA BREAD!!! and im Irish- so its perfect for me
how is your (husband!) diet different from Chelsey’s?
or more so… How do you view/think of your wife having a different diet to yours?
Ive never tried irish soda bread but it looks delicious !
I have never had soda bread before!! This looks so yummy, anything with raisins is a hit in my book:)
