dear mom

March 25, 2011

Ever since I was younger, people always told me I was a clone of you. While we shook our heads and laughed whenever anyone used to still tells us that, I know that it’s true. From the way we look, the way we think, the way we eat — we are one in the same. More surprisingly than not, as a child, teenager, and now as an adult — I’ve never minded it.

I can only imagine how much you have sacrificed over the years as my mom. Let’s face it — having two daughters (and one son — but he’s easy) isn’t necessarily cheap, but I’ve never once heard you complain. My obsessions ranged from wanting American Girl doll(s), only wearing clothes from Limited Too, a prom dress that I just had to have, and let’s not mention that college education. You’re always willing to give more than you probably should — whether it was a new toy when I was younger, a famous “can I have a bite?”,  or a trip to Costco now.

I will never forget the common phrases that came out of your mouth when I was younger. To name a few, “because I said so”, “would you like some cheese with that whine?”, and “because I’m your mother” probably rank at the top of my choices. In fact, I find myself using some of your phrases now (not with my secret children I hide in my closet, but with my students), and I can’t help but laugh. While your strict facade ran across your face, we all knew you were the softie of the family. Whenever I needed (okay, still need) anything, you’re the one to go to without a doubt. I’m not saying I don’t need Dad, but I know you’re easier to persuade. Like mother, like daughter.

I was racking my brain over the last few days, and I have come to conclude we never really went through a rough patch like most mothers and daughters. I never needed to push you away — I always wanted you near (even if my words didn’t mimic my thoughts). Although I rolled my eyes whenever my friends told me my mom was “so cool” and how I was “so lucky”, I knew they were true. I knew I had it good. Except for that one time when you danced in the car at a stop light — I could have disowned you for approximately five minutes while I wanted to die from shame.

Don’t get me wrong — you weren’t easy on us. You expected a lot, and I appreciate that. Actually, I’ve always appreciated that. Thank you for not being my friend while I was growing up. Now that I am older, I can see how much easier being our “friend” would have been. I am so glad you took the high road and parented us, loved us, disciplined us, and gave us consequences for our (many) bad choices in life. There is a difference in parenting a child and parenting an adult — I’m glad that parenting an adult includes being her best friend because I don’t know what I would do without you.

You have always stood by my side throughout my life. No matter what the situation, you have been the first one to dry my tears, and the first to calm my (many) anxieties about ridiculous “what if’s”. However, you’ve also always been the one to tell me that life isn’t fair and I need to buck up and get over myself.  There have been so many times in my life when my stubborn self has been firm in my stance, and I know you knew what I was doing was not the right thing. Instead of trying to persuade me otherwise, you let me live and learn the hard way. Throughout it all, you were on my side even when I was in the wrong.

I am so glad I have you for my mom. I’m pretty sure you’re one out of the two people in this world (the other being the Husband) who actually “get” me, who love me for exactly who I am, and push me towards my dreams.  I feel horrible for girls who don’t have moms or who never got along with their mother. I can’t imagine going through life without your love and support.

God willing, I hope to have a daughter someday, and to be perfectly honest, I hope she’s just like us. Okay, that was a little conceited, but for good reason. I can only imagine how incredibly blessed I would be if I could have a daughter who loves me just as much as I love you. I actually laughed while typing that because let’s face it — you got a Debbie, I’ll get a Kirstin. The world is against us somehow.

Happy Birthday Momma — and remember:

“I love you forever, I’ll like you for always. As long as I’m living, my mommy you’ll be.”

“I love you forever, I’ll like you for always. As long as I’m living, my mommy you’ll be.” That’s a popular quote with my mom and I too … I used to read that book all the time when I was little. I found a hard copy of it and gave it to my mom for mother’s day a couple years ago. It’s a keeper! :) Happy birthday to your mom!

cleaneatingchelsey March 25, 2011 at 10:20 pm

It is my all time favorite kid’s book. When we were little after we said our prayers, my mom would always say “I love you forever, I’ll like you for always, as long as I’m living my baby you’ll be” and we would follow up with the one about moms

My mom loves this book and has passed the love down to me…. But those darn last pages get me *every* time. I see the picture in my head on those last pages and start to cry. It is truly a beautiful love. I send my mom that text just to remind her of our love.
Happy Birthday to your mom!

You’re going to make me cry! A) your relationship with my mom reminds me of mine with my mother. Love her! And always wanted her close too.

B) I truly hope I can have that relationship with M. It would be such a blessing. One of my biggest fears is actually for her to ever feel about me remotely what I ever felt for my father.

Reply

cleaneatingchelsey March 25, 2011 at 10:21 pm

I totally agree - it scares me to have a daughter because I am frightened that I won’t be able to have as good of a relationship with her as I do with my mom. I know those are irrational fears though. M adores you! I’m sure that will always going to be the case.

This was so sweet; I started crying when I read it. Never take your relationship with your mother for granted- I lost my mother exactly one year and 2 days ago. It’s hard thinking about what she won’t be able to see me accomplish, like graduating high school (I’m 18) and going to college. I’m happy that you treasure your relationship with your mother. Treat each day like it’s the last.

Oh Kelsey, I am so sorry for your loss. I can’t even imagine what it would have been (and still is) like to lose my mom so young. I definitely don’t take her for granted!

Omg I am sobbing.

First, b/c the love and relationship you have with your mother is something that is sooo special. I have the opposite with mine.

Secondly, I only hope that one day my daughter feels about me the way you feel about your mom.

You and Janetha have such amazing relationships with your moms. I want that too, but…I hold out hope that maybe Skylar and I will have it one day.

Such a touching post and happy bday to your mom!

cleaneatingchelsey March 25, 2011 at 10:23 pm

I see the way Skylar adores you - I know you will have that kind of relationship as she gets older. Don’t worry if she goes through those normal teenage years where she may not like you - moms are cherished by daughters!

I just started reading your blog and I love this post. Your mom (and your relationship with her) reminds me of my own in so many ways. The thing that brought tears to my eyes, though, was the quote at the end. My mom read that book to us growing up, too, and we still say that line to each other. I’ve never met anyone else who knew about that book! I’ve already told my husband that I’m definitely reading that book to our future children.

Well my darling Chelsey, you have left me speechless. (We all know that RARELY, ok, never happens. I count my blessings everyday to have 3 wonderful kids, but, one who does seem to fit perfectly with me and that is you. We have always had a special connection and maybe it is because as the rest of our family thinks we’re wierd, I just know it’s because we are ALWAYS right! (Ok, maybe not) but it’s nice to dream. :) Thank you for the best birthday gift I could have ever gotten, to know that you love and appreciate me, no matter what, is all I will ever want or need from any of my kids. You are my life and I thank God everyday for the opportunity to see you grow and blossom as a wonderful beautiful and thoughtful adult. However, it’s true, “I will love you forever, like you for always,as long as I’m living my baby you’ll be”. Love you, Momma
