serious. lunch. hater.

April 14, 2011

Hate is a very strong word.

In fact, I try not to use it to describe the way I’m feeling. I just feel like the word “hate” has the opportunity to hurt a lot of people, and I’m just not a fan. I could, however, use the word hate in many situations. For instance, I could say:

I hate the way my hair looks when I wake up in the morning.

I hate when the husband chomps his cereal next to me while I’m trying to enjoy breakfast.

I hate it when drivers decide not to go the speed limit and swerve in and out of their lane as if they are asleep.

I hate when it’s 65 degrees one day and 45 the next.

I even sometimes hate when I come home to a giant pile of laundry that needs to be folded.

I hate when I have to wear my glasses when it feels like I have shards of glass in my eyes.

I could choose to use the word hate to describe all of those situations. Except, I won’t.

I’ll refrain.

Withhold my thoughts and feelings.

For the sake of others.

Because no one really likes to hear a whiner. Just don’t ask the Husband if I’m a whiner.

I’d rather you all not know the truth about me.

But that’s neither here nor there — let’s get back to the word hate once more. Because there is, in fact, one thing I truly do hate.

Lunch.

Disown me if you must, but I really hate lunch. I hate the whole process of lunch. I hate planning what I’m going to bring for lunch. I hate the act of hating what I have packed that day for lunch. In all honesty, I eat lunch to sustain myself — not for pleasure at all.

Yes, I know — lunch is supposed to be this wonderful break in the middle of the day to congregate with other co-workers, take an hour to get away from work. I get all that.

I’d just much rather enjoy my leisurely breakfast 3 times a day (plus 3 more times for snacks if you will). Nothing about lunch makes me swoon. It’s incredibly sad in fact.

Alas, I do still eat lunch every single day. Every night I look through my fridge and try to decide what to bring for lunch. It’s quite the decision making process, as how does one really know what she wants to eat 16 hours later?

More likely than not, I go with leftovers.

On Monday, I packed up the leftovers potatoes from Sunday’s lunch, a serving of chickpeas, and a few carrots. At lunch, I heated this up in the microwave. The carrots were warm, but still crisp, the potatoes had developed even more flavors overnight, and the chickpeas — well, chickpeas are delicious at any time. On the side, I had leftover fruit salad (pears and strawberries) topped with some almonds for healthy fats.

On Tuesday, I packed a spinach salad topped with chickpeas (with hummus/salsa for dressing). On the side I packed some Crunchmaster rice crackers, a pear topped with cinnamon, and a Larabar for an afternoon snack.

On Wednesday, I had to eat on the go. I made a green monster (with vanilla protein powder). On the side, I had carrots, celery, and rice crackers dipped in hummus. I also brought along some almonds and a Larabar for snackage.

During the winter, I ate a lot of soup. Let me reiterate that — I ate A LOT of soup. Every week I would make a big huge pot and pack it up each morning for lunch. I made sure to pair that with a healthy fat and/or protein and called it a day.

I also always pack my lunch at night — because reading just one more blog in the morning is far more important than trying to decide what I’m going to bring to eat. I also tend to get caught up in the moment if I try to pack my lunch in the morning, and I will throw my lunch packing out the window and go out for lunch instead. I’m still trying to find that money tree so I can make that happen every day.

So there. You’ve learned something new about me.

I’m a lunch hater.

And haters gonna hate.

So I’m just going to keep on hating my lunch.

But I’m going to stop whining about it. Because if there’s anything I’m not, it’s a whiner.

I’m just lucky the Husband isn’t a frequent flyer at CEC — otherwise he would definitely contest that statement.

I hate when he does that.

Question: Is there any meal you do not like?
