When’s the last time you laughed?

And I don’t mean just “laugh”, I mean the last time you reeeaaallly laughed.
Gut busting, side holding, bent over because you can’t stand up straight kind of laughing.
As a personal belief, I don’t let myself do much that I don’t like to do. Sure, there’s the dreaded bathroom cleaning that must happen weekly whenever I get around to it. And there’s also the pesky food that gets caught in the drain after I do the dishes each night. I can’t really say that I laugh while doing those chores — well, maybe with the bathroom cleaning. The shower needs a hefty dose of chemicals to get the grime out of it, so it is pretty much known I will get a little loopy while cleaning.
One thing that I do like, okay love, is my job. I don’t talk about teaching enough on here, but I have the opportunity each and every day to laugh uncontrollably at something that has happened. Many of the teachers in my school tell the fifth grade teachers (that’s me!) that we just “seem to have more fun” than the rest of the building.
That’s because we do.
We choose to have fun — to work together — to collaborate to make our work experience more enjoyable. We swap stories that make each other cry from laughing so hard. We rarely have days where something goes so incredibly wrong that we end up frustrated and ready to break.
I strongly believe that when you choose a profession or a job, you have to love it. You have to want to go to work every day. You have to enjoy the people who you work with.
Otherwise, you’re just going to end up miserable, whiny, and no fun.
Wow, that was harsh.
But it’s true!
Today, I laughed — a lot.
You see, I have three laughs. I have a fake laugh, a laugh that’s really loud, and a laugh that is a laugh so hard I have to keel over and no sound comes out of my mouth. The latter is quite humorous to watch, if I do say so myself.
The tone was set this morning during a meeting where my colleagues and I were crying from laughing so hard. However, there were two things today that really REALLY made me laugh.
- During our time with a kindergarten class that we see each week, the fifth graders and kindergarteners had to read a book of their choice. After reading that book, the students had to draw a picture and write a sentence about something that happened in their book. When we were collecting the papers, when I noticed an interesting picture on one. A little girl was on what looked like a stage where there was a big black pole. The girl was holding onto the pole with one leg up in the air. Do you see where I am going with this? The sentence read, “A girl is spinning on a pole.” REALLY?!?!? What kind of books are these kindergarteners reading these days? The best part? This picture/sentence is going to be used as part of an open house our school is holding in two weeks. I hope her parents get as big of a kick out of it as I did.

2. When it is cold and/or raining outside, we hold our afternoon recess in the gym. We usually play “Pirate’s Prison”, which is a game similar to dodge ball. The boys always dominate the game, which is okay, but we wanted to change things up a bit today. We made a new rule where the boys had to throw with the balls with their non-dominant hands. It was so funny to watch them vigorously attempting to throw the balls at top speed only to find the balls would travel about 5 feet in the air in the direction opposite of where it was meant to go. One of my boys was on the ground in such hysterics that no one could hold back their laughter.
We have a saying at work: “You can’t make this sh*t up.” You just can’t!
If you haven’t laughed yet today, go back and read this post one more time.
If that still didn’t make you laugh, I am the biggest failure in the blogosphere — or, you just don’t have any sense of humor.
Question: What is the last thing that made you laugh so hard that you cried?
