happy birthday charlie

April 22, 2011

Once upon a time, I was a sad little puppy who was found wandering the streets in a nearby town of where I live now. I was pretty scared, extremely cold, and I have no clue why I didn’t have a home. Thankfully, one day in December, a nice lady found me, let me get into her car, and brought me somewhere warm. She was really nice, gave me a lot of treats, and let me give her kisses — I like kisses.

The nice lady brought me to a big place where there were a lot of other dogs. I really liked the other dogs, but all I wanted to do was jump on every human’s lap and give them hugs. What can I say? I’m an attention hog. I got to go to the doctor to make sure I was healthy enough for someone to come and bring me to a new home. I went through a lot of tests, and even got surgery (my man card is totally gone in case you are wondering). Finally, the day came where I got to be in a cage along with other dogs so nice people could come and look at me.

I knew I wanted a new home. That whole cage business wasn’t my cup of tea. I like to run around and play as much as possible, so I wanted to get out of there quickly. I came up with a really good strategy. When the nice people came by to look at the other dogs and me, I would sit and wag my tail calmly while the other dogs went crazy barking and jumping. I knew I would fool someone into thinking I was a calm dog.

Thankfully, I tricked my new momma and daddy on the very first day. One look at me and they were hooked. All I had to do was give my momma a big ole bear hug and let my daddy pet me really nice. They didn’t want to go home without me. Little did they know, there is no such thing as just “going to look” for a dog — especially when there’s a dog like me around.

My mom thinks she’s biased, but I am a pretty handsome boy if I do say so myself.

Today is my birthday — I am one year old! I know my mom and dad have only known me for the last 4 months, but I feel like I’ve been here a lifetime.

I’ve discovered the backyard where I enjoy eating grass, mulch, and basically anything else I can get my paws on. I think it’s really funny when my mom has to run outside at 6 in the morning in her pajamas and my daddy’s shoes to yell at me for something. Really, I just wanted her to come out to play with me — I’m so manipulative.

I’m glad I figured out how much I love laying in the sun so early in my lifetime. There’s nothing better than the warm sun beating down on me while I take a nap outside. Just ask Mom — she can’t get me inside even if she tries when it’s nice outside. I’m such a boy.

I never knew how cold it could get outside. In the winter, especially when it snowed, I liked to lay on top of the vent where the heat came out.  It got me nice and toasty pretty quick. Of course, I had to sleep off the cold too.

I’m a pretty goofy dog too. I like to make silly faces to make my momma and daddy laugh. As long as they’re paying attention to me, I don’t care what I have to do. I’ll look ridiculous for them.

I have figured out I have impeccable self control when it comes to food. My mom can drop food on the floor, and she doesn’t even have to tell me “NO!”. I know it’s not for me.

However, there is something so tempting about socks. I can’t explain it, but socks are just so delicious. Black socks taste better than white socks too. Black socks go down so much smoother — they’re thinner and easier on my intestines. Just a bit of advice — you know, in case you ever want to try them out.

On second thought, maybe you shouldn’t. This is what happened to me after I ate three of them. Yes, I said three — I was hungry. Don’t judge me. You should have seen my mom’s face when I threw one up though. I thought she was going to kill me, or at least ground me from playing outside for a day. I think she felt horrible once she saw how sick I got though. I got waited on hand and foot — and I even got to use her blankets.

It only took me a mere 3 days to make my way up onto the couches that Mom and Dad told me they would “never let me get up on”. Just look at that face — how can you resist?

Oh, and if you’re wondering — yes, my mom can make herself invisible. That’s why half of her face is gone. She studied under Harry Potter. She’s a wizard!

As much as I love my mom, I love my dad 23092340938423098 times more. Mom was sad about this at first, but I think she’s gotten over it. I want to be just like my dad when I grow up. Because of this, I have to follow him everywhere to make sure that happens. I started by learning how to sit up just like him.

Lucky for him, he doesn’t have a tail like me. I just get too sidetracked whenever I see my tail. Yes, I bite it — yes, I feel it — no, I don’t put two and two together. I’m a dog, sheesh!

I have quickly become my mom’s sous-chef. Don’t tell Dad, but I get to sit next to her in the kitchen when she’s cooking and she doesn’t even care. I love leaning against her legs while she washes dishes. The more I get into her way, the better. That means I get more attention.

Despite that last picture, I am a pretty smart boy. I am still a puppy you know.

Do you think my mom and dad will get me black socks for my birthday? I’m going to cross my paws!!

Just so you know, we’re going to live happily ever after too.

The beginning of this post scared the bejasus out of me for a minute; I thought it was going to be some child-abduction story. That’s even with the post title and the fact there’s a picture of Charlie at the top. I’m very stupid :-)

And really…the SAME THING happened to us ->”Little did they know, there is no such thing as just “going to look” for a dog — especially when there’s a dog like me around.” Yep, that’s how we ended up with Happy! I’m a softie :)

The black sock story is hilarious… and Happy leans on my legs in the kitchen while I cook, too!!!!!!!

You will have dog-sitter volunteers all across America after this.

PS- I can’t believe he didn’t mention the “snow boot” incident.
He’s probably just trying to block it from memory. LOL

You know, I am not a dog person at all. I want to love them, but I’m actually quite terrified of them and pretty much convinced that every dog out there wants to chew my face off. And since dogs can smell fear or something like that, it’s sort of a self-fulfilling prophecy and I’ve been bit pretty bad by dogs twice. But I have to say, Charlie is an absolutely stunning dog. That second picture, WOW.
