My mom frequently tells people she does not how she ended up with two hippie children. By the process of elimination, I am one of them. I immediately disqualified my older sister. My sister does not have an ounce of hippie blood in her. Now, I’m not saying she’s high maintenance or anything (ahem), but hippie she is not.
So that just leaves my brother and me. My brother I can see. He’s a blue grass lovin’, tie-dye wearin’, aviator buyin’ fool. Every ounce of blood in that boy is hippie. In fact, I wasn’t even surprised when he brought home a girl last year that was wearing a headband around her head (you know — the wrong way) and wearing a long flowy dress. That’s just so my brother.
So I was very taken aback the first time my mother called me a hippie? Me? A hippie? I laugh at you lady. I’ve never seen no Earth lovin’ hippie girl carrying a Coach bag and wearing Tiffany earrings. You must be mistaking me for someone else — because a hippie your daughter is not.
However, then the un-hippie child (my sister) agreed with her. It was quite mind boggling what they thought. They both pictured me with long hair, a flowy dress, and two children eating nothing but organic food.
If that’s what a hippie is, then I guess I am not opposed to being one. In fact, can someone please give me pointers on how to be more of a hippie? I love organic food, long dresses, and long hair. Let’s do this. Hold the two children please — I’m not ready for those.
And you better believe my mom won’t be complaining this summer about her hippie daughter when she gets free tomatoes and zucchini this summer. Mmhm, that’s what I thought.
Many of you asked me yesterday a lot of questions about my garden. To be perfectly honest with you (because I like being honest — it’s the hippie in me), I have no clue what I’m doing. Seriously — I’ll be lucky if these plants make it. Coming from a mother who only kept day lilies outside (because you basically can’t kill them), I can’t necessarily say we are a “green thumb” kind of family. My new little family is more of a brown thumb kind of family. Between my black thumb and the Husband’s green thumb, we kind of make some kind of ugly dirt color. I’m down with that.
Many of you asked what kind of soil I got — I have no clue. For real. The Husband built the planter box. It’s a raised bed, that much I know. The Husband got the dirt for me. The Husband spread it for me. Do you see a trend here? The only thing the Husband didn’t do was go buy the plants and stick them in the ground. I did that with my new cute pink gardening gloves while screaming at Charlie not to nibble on the tomato plants. How’s that for organic?
I figured it can’t be too hard. You plant the plants, you water them, you make sure your dog doesn’t eat them. You fertilize (with organic fertilizer might I add) and pull weeds so they don’t steal the nutrients from the plants. Am I missing anything else? Oh yeah, you also get to eat from your backyard. I’m just going to go with the flow and see where the wind blows me (how’s that for a hippie statement?).
The first lesson I learned was that you actually get dirty when gardening. Um, gross. I am not one of those girls who enjoys getting dirty as much as I try to convince the Husband that I “don’t mind as long as I’m wearing the right clothes”. I mind, and I also know now why people who have gardens wear those ugly Crocs. Mud is a bit difficult to wash off of running shoes, did you know that? But those Crocs, man — those Crocs would have come clean in five seconds.
I’m just going to sit back and let my garden grow — pretty groovy right?
Peace and love brothers and sisters.
Question: Have you ever grown a garden? Any tips?

We are growing a garden too! The Padre is so incredibly excited, we got him a topsy turvy tomato planter for his birthday! And tons of spinach, kale, romaine, and cucumber seeds. Can you say, saving major moolah?!
I aspired to be a hippie when I was little. I wanted to be a flower child… lol
We had a garden when I was growing up, but I got dragged into helping with the weeding. Didn’t really learn too much- wish I would have paid more attention, though!
The only secret to a impressive garden is miracle grow, I swear, hippie girl. It comes in organic, too.
oo good tip!
hilarious about the hippie comments!!!
we did an experimental garden last year and got a few things but not as mucha s we would have liked. we have two tomato plants this year but that’s it.
I want a garden SO SO BAD and I want to be a hippie with you!!! Long dresses, organic food and peace signs…..let’s do it. I need to learn gardening through you and I might have to come visit you and help you eat some of that amazing produce that you will have!!! Thanks for being my best text friend. LOVE YOU!!!
Yes you will have to come and help me eat it PLEASE! <3 you!
hah, I always wonder if “non-hippies” in my town chuckle at everyone going into the co-op carrying their reusable bags and leaving with them bursting with kale and kombuchas in hand. I guess I just imagine people shaking their fists saying “Damn hippie!” at me as I try and cross crosswalks as quickly as I can without losing precious cargo…
anyways. we’re attempting a garden again this year. last year we had way more tomatoes than could feed even an army, but couldn’t grow eggplant, peppers or carrots to save our souls. Good luck with your garden!
haha! Did you start from seeds or from little plants? I thought I would start from little plants first - that way part of the work is done for me!!
Modern-day hipppie? Hippie hybrid perhaps? I for one think it’s totally possible to have an affinity for designer handbags (they make hippie-looking ones!), Tiffany jewelry, and a spa day and still be, oh what do they say, “at one with nature.” Or maybe I’m just not realistic enough. Anyways, I can’t wait until my boyfriend and I buy a house so I am able to have a vegetable garden!
i have only grown container gardens, i.e. on my patio or window sill. have fun growing!
I absolutely love fresh garden veggies!
I have never had much of a garden other than herbs and a tomato/pepper plant or two in planters. My dad does a nice garden every season so I get a lot from his. He also has a retired friend that does a huge garden, between that and our produce stand (which is stocked with lots of fresh veggies from the owners farm) I get plenty of fresh vegetables.
Good luck with your garden, I can’t wait to see what comes out of it!
I’m always secretly jealous of people that grow their own gardens, and it makes me want to start my own… but then I remember how much work is involved, and how I could barely keep the peace lily in my room alive (it died anyways), and decide that I don’t want the death of THAT many plants on my conscience. But I’ll gladly take any spare veggies off your hands
I miss having a garden since growing up my dad always had a huge garden. Since I living in a condo its not feasible for a garden but this year I’m going to plan tomatoes and Basil in some pots.
thats awesome id love to be growing a garden right now! we just moved so we had to get rid of our barely started garden
i need some inside plants!
I’m growing one too…. ooops, TRYING to grow one too!
…. but then again, moms know best!
Let’s go buy a pair of crocs and gardening gloves and get down and dirty with our fresh produce. Hahaha! I also love this hippy comments from your mom, I think you are just in tune with the world around you
Let me know how yours turns out!
The closest I’ve ever been to gardening was the basil plant I bought from Home Depot. My aunt, on the other hand, has a full blown garden in her backyard - tomatoes, eggplant, peppers, beans, etc. She says its hard work but totally worth it. I would have to agree because the veggies that come out of her yard are delicious! Can’t wait to see your garden grow!
I did the basil plant last year - I loved loved LOVED eating fresh basil!
Ah, I miss my garden at our old house. I can’t wait to start one here, but I just need to grow the grass first. We’re still trying to get the yard in order this year but next year, I’ll be a gardening fool.
That was our thing last year - we had the house but we were so concerned with getting the inside renovated that the gardening took a back seat. I’m so excited for thisyear!
Sooo cool you have a garden! I have no tips for you, as I killed the one basil plant we had last year haha. Except I have heard if you talk to plants, it helps. I’m sure that applies to gardens, too? I already talk to my food, so it can’t be too weird
I think that is a good idea - I talk to myfood too.
My plants attempt suicide on a regular basis, but good luck, I’m excited to see updates and how this turns out for you!
I’ve always wanted a garden, but each time I try to plant one - they die within months. I’ve FINALLY gotten some green plants to live for the past few months & I call THAT a success : )
I SO want to grow a garden, but I need to find a PLACE for it first..
I have never had a garden before…I have always been a little to intimidated to start one. I have grown tomato plants before though, those are super easy, just make sure they have supports for when they start growing…the tomatoes get heavy and will weigh down the plant if you don’t
Thanks for the tip! Last year I had a grape tomato plant and it kept falling over - haha!
I know nothing about gardening either. I will follow along and maybe learn from your experience!
I wish I could grow a garden! Unfortunately I live in a condo and do not have a yard for it. But I will be moving home and just might convince my mom who has a green thumb that she really needs a garden this year! good luck!
Dearest Chelsey,
To be a true hippie you have to own a VW Beetle. You can borrow mine anytime. Red Chevy RST’s ARE NOT HIPPIE.
About your garden………water at night and in the early morning but not during the heat of the day. Your tomatoes will need cages around them to support them. Your welcome to borrow mine. Some times I support them with by tieing them on with knee highs. One day everything will be great, and the next day you’ll have a blanket of weeds. Hoe them up quick, while they’re little. I just picked up a book on Illinois gardening, let me know if you’d like to use it. I’m so proud of you.
Love your other mother
Thanks other mother!
That Chevy RST is just for the time being - although your husband called me yesterday when he saw me driving it. I’ve already got plans to get some cages and I remembered you telling me about the knee highs! Thanks for the tips.
So exciting! And I am honest, as a reader, I am so anxious to see what you do when you have zucchini out the wazoo. Invest in a spirilizer now (if you want).
Peace, wo-man.
I agree - I need a spiralizer because I have FOUR zucchini plant - yes, four. Zucchini for ALL!
If you can figure out how to get long blonde hair without split ends, I will praise you sistah! I’d love to grow a garden and my true lack of green thumb would be SO convinced that I just plant and it WILL turn out like the package shows. Is there such thing as a sucker hippie or unrealistic hippie? HA!
Ooh have fun. I kill everything, too.
I have successfully kept a basil and cilantro plant alive for two whole weeks now - I have killed every plant I have ever owned. Good luck! I’m pulling for you
I am so proud!
Oh this is hilarious
Way to go, hippie. And I had to wear Crocs for a job I had in the past… trust me, you don’t want them. Wear cheap plastic sandals instead. Those clean off real easy too haha
Haha, I think somehow I ended up a “hippie girl” too.
Ugh, I have the biggest black thumb! I did buy one little tomato plant this year and it’s already wilting! Keeping my fingers crossed that it makes it!
My dad on the other hand is going big this year! His garden has a little bit of everything and I plan on mooching all I can!
What an adorable little garden! Unfortunately I wont have any yard space where I’m living next fall, so I’ll just have to stick with a little window herb garden!
Billy and I planted a garden last spring, and he was so good about watering it and tending to it! I wasn’t so good about helping. It’s really hot in Texas, and standing out there watering seemed daunting. We let things over grow - like the biggest cucumber you’ve ever seen! But we also had luck with tomatoes, jalapenos, and lots of herbs. And by we, I guess I mean he. Ha!
I figured I would have time in the summer since I don’t work! The idea of tending to it doesn’t seem daunting to me!
I’ve alwwwways wanted a garden, but unfortunately, we dont have a yard and our windows and porch don’t get direct sunlight! (I know, it’s super sad!)
I am such a huge huge huge gardener!! I love everything about it and if you ever have any questions, fire them at me! I’m excited to start my garden after I move in a month!
You’ll probably get bugs….everyone does. Google saves the day all the time. There’s nothing you can’t do with the internet. Good luck!
I bought this organic spray for bugs - do you do something different?
This will be my 3rd year with my own garden and I love every minute of it - planning, maintaining and the best part fresh veggies right outside my door
Last year I bought I book called The Complete Book of Vegtables to help me plan my garden - it talks about everything from companion gardening to what veggies like what type of weather etc. It is a great resource for other info too!
Thanks for the tip! I am going to learn while going along doing it!
haha love the hippie confusion
I have never had a garden because all of my residents have been apartments! I really hope we move to an area where we can have one though
This post is wicked cute.
I cannot wait until David and I have a house of our own and a garden in the back. I so want to grow my own vegetables!
apartment living doesn’t let me have a garden and i am NOT happy about that! i want to try my hand at growing treats!
Do you have a balcony? YOu could get a tomato plant and some herbs!
I planted my first garden last year and made the mistake of putting the zucchini plants too close together. Those things get huge!! Lesson learned though.
uh oh - I might be in for a surprise.
My family grows herbs and tomatoes! I wish I could say I help out with the gardening, but uhh… I don’t.
I just like to eat the end result haha.
Haha my dad built one of those over Easter weekend. I have no idea what’s growing in there though. I have no green thumb. My thumb is blacker than black.
Well hopefully your daddy’s garden will grow!
HO YESS! holla at you hippie! im secretly jealous… i could never start a garden.. well actually I HATE gardening.. so that would never work1!
I love that you are growing a garden! That is something I would love to do. Maybe I can use your tips and start one for the fall!
Those headbands annoy me!
Good luck with your garden! I can’t wait to have a back yard and start one! Fresh garden products are the best!
I wish I could have a garden! I am still in an apartment so the best I could probably do is one of those upside down thingys you can hang on your balcony (which I am totally tempted to try).
just say no to crocs!!!!
bahaha - i promise I won’t wear them out!
chelsey girl - just caught up on all your lovely posts, and i must say - your writing is quite lovely lately! and i love that dream jar. i have one of my own. and i want to plant a garden, so i am envious of yours. and those strawberry breakfast bars are calling my name. and ummm, how did i miss this coffee tea giveaway thang? teccino, i need in my life. anyways, just wanted to drop a line, let you know that i think your posts are quite good lately and that i hope you have a fantastic rest of your week!!
Thanks Miss Holly - I’m glad you’re all caught up, and I appreciate the compliment coming from you!
I’m also taking the very laidback approach to my first garden. Not really sure what I’m doing, but I’m gardening in a container and cultivated my first cup of spinach yesterday morning. Mother Nature knows what she’s doing!

I hope your garden turns out well so that I can use your tips when I one day get up the motivation to start my own. It looks like you’ve done everything right (in my humble opinion, which means nothing)!
I started gardening a few years ago. I actually looked each plant up online to find out just how much light and water it needs. Most of mine are very average, which is great. Water them a few times a week if it hasn’t rained (and here in Virginia, it doesn’t rain much in the summer). But seriously, put seed in ground, water, wait, repeat. Oh, then EAT! My only advice is to pay attention to how far apart you are supposed to space the plants, or thin them out. Last year I put two squash plants close together but those suckers get three feet wide. And tomato plants, you’re only supposed to keep one or two, because they grow about five feet high and we had rotting tomatoes everywhere because I kept three plants.
Yikes - I have FOUR tomato plants! Thankfully, I will be giving them away like candy to my family - and perhaps making a riduclous amount of salsa and canning some?
You are one motivated girl. Well, just look at how far the instructions say to space the plants. There are different kinds of tomato plants and they grow to different sizes. Mine needed a 2′ radius around each plant. They were too close and they were wrapping all around each other. It was madness, woman, tomato madness.
I am the least green person you’ll ever “meet.” I can barely keep my orchids alive for more than a couple of months - it’s terrible!
don’t resort to the crocs. DON’T DO IT!
…there’s no way to make crocs look cool. ever.
although, if anyone can do it in their garden, maybe you can.
You just wait - those crocs will look good in my garden (and nowhere else).
Yay for gardens! You are going to have so much fun. I grew up helping my mom and dad garden, my mom has a beautiful flower garden and my dad has a HUGE vegetable garden and grows amazing tomatoes and all of these other veggies and herbs.
I just started an herb garden on our deck here at our apartment. I can’t wait to have a house and yard someday and have a real garden, but for now my basil, cilantro, thyme, etc are tasting great in my recipes!
Pink gardening gloves…I must have those. Not that I do any gardening, but just in case…
The ONLY yardwork I somewhat enjoy is using the hedgetrimmer things. It’s oddly therapeutic to chop away at your hedges with a power tool. Except I cut right through the cord one time…oops.
I’ve NEVER been interested in gardening, but I watched my mom have the biggest, greenest thumb when I was growing up. I feel like it’s in my blood. I can’t wait to see what pops up in your garden!
Nice garden - it’s lovely (or should I say, groovy!)
hahahah hilarious. organic food for the hippies!
I love fresh herbs from the garden! It’s so convenient. “Oh, I need basil for this sandwich? I’ll just pick a leaf from outside!”
-courtney
Kev and I just started with some tomatoes and bell peppers (in containers, not ground). I have no clue how it will all turn out as I do have a black thumb when it comes to flowers. I have managed to keep an indoor palm plant alive for a while now and we also bought two tall palm tree plants so we shall see.
But I’m most excited about the veggies. If they turn out, I will be so excited. Would love to grow kale and spinach but I need to do some more research before moving forward.
So jealous everyone in the blogging world seems to be starting a garden up and Im still in this apartment and cant have one
Good luck! It looks great so far
I love your Goovy Garden!!! I wish I had one too!
I would love to be able to grow a garden.. a vegeable garden! But - there is no place for it at our condo right now. Someday!
I love this. I love how connected you can feel to your food, to the earth, to all of life, when you do something so hands on. I’ve never really gardened, and admittedly, am not much of a hippie, but I so respect that connection, that urgency to be closer to nature.
I love the way you weave stories of your past with ones of your present. You are a fabulous writer, Chels!
Loved this post..I am constantly being called a hippie or a granola (urban dictionary that one) and at first I was convinced they were wrong. In time I came to realize, wow maybe I am sort of a hippie in loving organic, natural foods..yoga..the earth and animals. So proudly wear that title and more people need to take after us hippies.!
I will be vicariously gardening through you!! I can’t wait to have a house to start a garden. Until then, keep us posted
I wish I had a garden! I’ve just got some basil on the kitchen window growing. :/
Beautiful blog. Wonderful recipes. Watch this nettle soup. http://usubufood.blogspot.com/2011/05/csalankremleves.html
