abc’s of food

May 30, 2011

Don’t forget to enter my Enjoy Life Giveaway! The giveaway ends this Wednesday, June 1.

I recently saw a fun survey from Lisa and Janeetha and thought it would be fun to complete myself. Because let’s be honest, all of us needs mindless activities on national holidays!

A is for Apple: What’s your favorite variety?
I absolutely love Honeycrisp and Pink Lady apples. But to be perfectly honest with you, I tend to buy whatever apples “look the best” because they are usually the ones that are in season, which means they will… taste the best.

B is for Bread: Regardless of nutrition, what is your favorite type?

Oh bread — the bane of my existence. Did you know I thought I would die when I went gluten free with the thought of never having “real” bread again? If I could have any bread and was not gluten free, I would have to go with french bread topped with oodles of butter. Oh so delicious… oh so painful.

C is for Cereal: What is your favorite kind currently? (just one!)

Well, I don’t really eat cereal anymore. It’s sad, but there really is no cereal that can satisfy me and my dietary needs. Does granola count? Because I am all over that.

D is for Donuts: You might not currently eat them, but what kind do you fancy?

Given I wouldn’t get a stomachache from eating excessive amounts of sugar (for real, it happens) and my intestines wouldn’t hate me (do you see a trend here?), I would have to say Dunkin’ Donuts Boston Creme Pie. I ate those all the time when I was younger. Or, I would have to have Dunkin’ Donuts chocolate glazed cake donut. I love Dunkin’ Donuts.

E is for Eggs: How would you like yours prepared?

I’d rather not eat them. I thought I wanted eggs a few weeks ago and tried some hardboiled on my salad, and I gagged — true story. I learned my lesson the hard way.

F is for Fat Free: What is your favorite fat free product?
Fruits and vegetables! Please raise your hand and repeat after me: “I (state your name) will promise not to buy 100 calorie packs or any kind of fake food because they are fat free/sugar free but full of chemicals and artificial ingredients.” Thank you.

G is for Groceries: Where do you purchase yours?
Um.. everywhere. I tend to go to 2-3 grocery stores a weekend. I frequent Trader Joe’s, Costco, Aldi, and Jewel. Sometimes I make it up to Whole Foods as well.

H: is for Hot Beverages: What is your favorite hot drink?
::sigh:: Coffee. You can read about my ode to coffee here and my realization that I needed to give it up here. I now tend to drink about 1-2 cups a week.

I is for Ice Cream: Pick a favorite flavor and add a fun topping.
I am going to go with plain jane vanilla. I love SO Delicious coconut milk ice cream — it’s so creamy and it doesn’t make my stomach hurt! I would have to add salted caramel sauce … mmmm.

J is for Jams or Jellies: Do you eat them? If so, what kind and flavor?
I’m not really a jam or jelly kind of girl. With that being said, if I do eat jam, it has to be the fruit only (with added sugars is too sweet for me) and chunky.

K is for Kashi: Name your favorite Kashi product?
I used to live off of Go Lean! Crunch.

L is for Lunch: What was yours today?

Pathetic. No — truly. We went to Lincoln Park Zoo this afternoon, and my mom and I had to piece meal lunch together. We both had a veggie wrap without the wrap, split an order or rice and beans, and split a fruit salad. Read: plan better next time and I was hungry within 10 minutes.

M is for microwave: What is your favorite microwave meal/snack?
Protein muffins! I usually have one every night (if I am not eating granola).

N is for nutrients: Do you likes carbs, fats, or proteins best?
I pretty much love them all. I tend to eat more fats and protein than carbs, which is funny coming from an ex-carboholic.

O is for oil: What kind do you like to use?
Olive oil or coconut oil — both so delicious. I typically avoid canola/vegetable oil.

P is for protein: How do you get yours?
Being a vegetarian/typically lactose free doesn’t mean I can’t get my protein in! I eat a lot of nuts, tofu, beans, protein powders, peanut flour, etc. I try to have one source of protein at each meal/snack.

Q is for Quaker: How do you like your oats?

Well, I don’t do Quaker. I wish I could since it’s cheaper, but I have to go Bob’s Red Mill gluten free all the way. I eat them hot or cooked and cold. I always have to have peanut butter. Other than that, toppings can range from fresh fruit to more granola.

R is for roasting: What is your favorite thing to roast?
Vegetables — any kind. Doesn’t matter. All delicious.

S is for sandwich: What’s your favorite kind?
Any kind of sandwich as long as it has a lot of veggies and hummus.. or avocado.

T is for travel: How do you handle eating while traveling?
I plan ahead — I bring breakfasts (they are the hardest to replace — no one has gluten free oats) and snacks. I always keep a stash of dried fruit, nuts, and bars with me at all times.

U is for unique: What is one of your weirdest food combos?
Well, I don’t think any of my combos are “weird” but I guess that’s because I love them. I guess people think it’s weird that I can put ketchup on anything — like really.. anything.

V is for vitamins: What kind do you take?
I take a variety of supplements that I get from my holistic doctor — however, I don’t think any of them are really “vitamins”. He doesn’t really believe in multi-vitamins, but the supplements I take help to support my body and help it function to its fullest.

W is for wasabi: Yay or nay?
I like it hot!

X is XRAY: If we xrayed your belly right now, what food would we see?
A giant salad topped with tofu/hummus, some leftover potatoes from last night, and 77% cacao chocolate. A snack will be joining it soon.

Y is for youth: What food reminds you of your childhood?
So many foods — cinnamon toast crunch, cooked salami with melted cheese (don’t ask — I know, so gross), Kraft Mac ‘n Cheese, Shake ‘n Bake chicken, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, Saltines topped with peanut butter, grilled cheese, vegetarian chili, Subway.

Z is for zucchini: How do you prepare it?
Any way! I will roast it, sauté it, grill it, put it into pasta sauce, make zucchini bread/muffins!

Question: What foods remind you of your childhood? OR In light of summer, what is your favorite ice cream?

Loved the answer to the fat free question! I’m with you on that one for sure. Foods that remind me of my childhood? Frozen chicken nuggets, mac and cheese, Campbell’s noodle soup (the one out of the package not the can), Dairy Queen (seriously, my mom would take us there EVERY DAY after school), grilled cheese and before I make my mom sound like a bad mother feeding her children crap we did have popsicles made from real fruit juice and I hated it. I always wanted to Popsicle brand!

Reply

missymiller May 30, 2011 at 8:12 pm

Granola totally counts.

Food memories of childhood are so amazing, huh? Or actually in general. Certain foods are “college” or “Freshman year of high shool” to me.
Some foods are all about other people. Lender’s Bagels are all about my best friend, Farah.

Love that - foods definitely remind me of people as well!

Some of the foods from my childhood are SO embarrassing looking back on them now! Haha! But here’s a few that remind me of being little: lunchables as a treat (gross I know!), chicken fingers, klondike bars, black olives, italian bread toasted with butter, soupy mac n cheese, pesto, and oreos to name a few!

Reply

cleaneatingchelsey May 30, 2011 at 8:21 pm

Oh mine are embarassing too - so horrible.

Ok lady, I just gotta say, your choice of making a boiled egg your first egg was all wrong! No disrespect. But hard boiled eggs are probably the worst way to eat an egg, ever, vegan or not! ;)

Fun survey! I don’t eat real ice cream but my favorite “ice cream” is the So-Delicious no sugar added mint chocolate chip coconut milk ice cream. I like to think I’m still in my childhood but I’ll bite and say an enormous package of Oreos and turkey sandwiches, and ice cold lemonade.

My favorite store bought ice cream is the Almond Dream plain vanilla. It has the BEST flavor of any vanilla- non dairy that I have tried!
I love banana soft serve with any kind of baked good in it; cookie dough bites, grown up rice crispie treats, cookies, you name it!

My boyfriend thinks it is so weird that I put ketchup on my tacos. It’s something that my family always did. Even though my taco habits have changed from greasy ground beef and loads of cheese to tofu and loads of spinach, I still love the ketchup on top!

It’s bad but I loved DQ’s cotton candy blizzard when they had it as the blizzard of the month a couple summer’s back. I should actually be fortunate that they haven’t had it back since then…I might weigh 200lbs more! My dad used to cook the ‘best’ meals when I growing up, but that’s because the mashed potatoes had a gallon of milk and butter…thank goodness I learned to cook with less somehow!

Childhood food.. apricot museli bars and monte carlo biscuits. And begimite on toast, and banana and sugar sandwiches for lunch.
weird. xx
