rudi’s gluten free bread (GIVEAWAY!)

June 20, 2011

I have fond memories of bread in my life.

(source)

What?  You think that’s weird?

There is a restaurant near my parents’ home, where I used to get a salad and baked potato about every other day (no joke), but the best part was the French bread that came with it. It was chewy, moist (ew -  I hate that word), and tasted best when slathered with a pat of butter.

Let’s talk about France for a minute. When I was in Paris, I lived off of bread products. Baguettes, croissants — you name it, I wanted it. Now, I was only there for three days, but those were the most glorious three days of my life. The more bread the better.

I’ll never forget the first time I felt sick after eating bread. It seriously hit me like a ton of bricks. I had made myself a turkey sandwich (my my how things have changed — no turkey or wheat bread for me!) for dinner. Immediately after, I felt sick. My stomach bloated out and looked like I was six months pregnant, and I was uncomfortable for the rest of the night. After that incident, I was keenly aware of how my body reacted when I ate wheat products. How I had gone through 22 years of my life before noticing this or experiencing pain from eating gluten products is beyond me. I still can’t figure that one out.

When my doctor told me to give up gluten, I was extremely sad and relieved at the same time. I would have to give up all of my beloved bread products (plus many other products that sneakily have gluten in them), but on the flip side, I would feel 200% better every day.

Instantly after giving up gluten, my migraines disappeared. I hadn’t noticed before, but I had a red rash all along my legs/thighs that went away after I stopped eating it. My digestive problems (kind of) took care of themselves. My joints no longer ached all the time. I just felt good.

But I felt bad that gluten free bread kind of stunk.. and it cost about $7 a loaf.

Needless to say, I started making my own bread. I found an excellent recipe online, and have been making a loaf and freezing it about every month since.

Sometimes, though, I just don’t feel like making my own bread. Life gets in the way, I get too busy, and baking bread is the last thing on my list to do in life.

A few months ago, my mom told me she had bought the best gluten free bread she has ever had. Like mother, like daughter — my mom is also gluten free as well. She told me the brand of bread was Rudi’s Bread — and I had to try it.

So when I reached out to Maggie at Rudi’s after meeting her at the Gluten Free Expo in May, she offered to send me some samples of their bread to try.

I was sent their Cinnamon Raisin brad, Multigrain Sandwich Bread, and new Multigrain Hamburger Buns.

One thing you must know about GF breads is that they must be frozen. I’m not sure why — maybe because there are no preservatives or it will crumble if it’s not frozen and then thawed right before eating — but just trust me on this one. I’ve gotten used to toasted bread.

Love this cinnamon raisin bread! There are so many raisins, and it makes for the perfect breakfast or late night snack.

You’ll notice that gluten free bread also has more air holes than regular wheat bread. That is because the gluten in the wheat is the main ingredient that will hold the bread together. Gluten free bakers have to use other means to get their baked goods to “glue” together.

I’ve never had a store bought GF hamburger bun, but this bun held up really well! I would have expected it to crumble or not be able to hold all of my sandwich ingredients, but it did quite well!

And last but not least, the multigrain sandwich bread — also a great piece of GF bread. Most gluten free sandwich breads are really tiny, but this bread is comparable to the size of a slice of Wonder bread — not quite as huge as large whole grain wheat bread, but big nonetheless!

What I like about Rudi’s bread the most is how it does not crumble after it is toasted. That is a hard component of gluten free baking to perfect, but they have done it!

Lucky for you, Maggie @ Rudi’s Gluten Free Bakery has also offered for two lucky readers to win a package of the Hamburger Buns and Multigrain Sandwich bread!

Even if you are not gluten free, this could be the perfect opportunity to try something new! To enter this giveaway, you can do one (or all) of the following. Each entry should be entered as a separate comment.

  1. Share what your favorite sandwich combination is (mandatory)
  2. Follow Clean Eating Chelsey on Twitter
  3. Follow Rudi’s Bakery on Twitter
  4. Tweet the following: “Enter to win 3 loaves of @rudisglutenfree from @cleaneatingchel —http://wp.me/p11BDk-1Dn "

This giveaway will be open until Thursday, June 24 @ 6:00 PM. Happy entering!

I know what you mean about a food intolerance sneaking up on you. I was fine with dairy until 18 months ago - then bam! One day eating yogurt I just felt awful and it lasted almost 24 hours. I still “test the waters” from time to time hoping it will go away, but my doc told me it’s normal to have a lactose intolerance onset in your early twenties. Maybe it’s similar for gluten? I think they both use certain enzymes to digest the specific proteins and the chemistry of our bodies does change a bit over the course of our lives.

Not entering the giveaway since I’m not GF, but I just wanted to share!

Have a lovely evening!

My favorite sandwich combination is egg whites, olive oil mayo, ketchup, and morningstar farms bacon on toast :-)

My boyfriend’s doctor suggested he try abstaining from Gluten to see if he’ll feel better. We’ve been having a tough job cutting it out completely enough to know whether it’s the culprit, but we have significantly cut down on the amount of gluten we eat over the past few months. Plus variety is good for any diet, and Gluten Free bread uses very different grains/flours!

First of all, I LOVE your blog.
I really hope that the giveway is also open for non- US residents, because I would like to enter this give away for a good friend of mine. She is also gluten-intolerant and has a hard job here in the Netherlands to find good and affordable gluten free bread. She is always eating nutella, so here best sandwich will not be that fancy, but hey nutella kicks ass and its delish on every thing :-)
Love, Vicky
