the tale of the chips

June 23, 2011

Setting: CEC’s kitchen on Tuesday night. The Husband is rummaging around the pantry looking for food.

Husband: You know, I just thought I should tell you I really don’t like Cheez-Its.

CEC: Thanks for the update.

Husband: I’m not telling you this just for fun. You put Cheez-Its in my lunch for the last two days. I don’t like them.

CEC: Well, that’s rough. I didn’t pay for the Cheez-its. They were leftover from my classroom at the end of the year.

Husband: I don’t want to eat the Cheez-Its. I always give them to one of my guys (meaning a guy that works for him).

CEC: That’s nice of you. I bet he liked the Cheez-Its.

Husband: Yeah, he did. But I was still hungry at lunch today.

CEC: Well, the Cheez-Its wouldn’t have done you any good. They wouldn’t have filled you up anyways. You should have eaten the fruit and protein bar I gave you then.

Husband: WHAT!? I didn’t even see those? (looks through lunchbox) A cookie dough protein bar? Now I’m mad.

CEC: Sorry. Maybe if you cleaned your lunch box out more often, you would have found them.

Husband: What I’m really trying to tell you is that I want chips in my lunch tomorrow.

CEC: We don’t have chips.

Husband: Can you go get chips? I really want chips.

CEC: No.

Husband: Why not?

CEC: I’m not going to the grocery store. I’m challenging myself.

Husband: (looking annoyed) Well, you’re not challenging me. I want chips.

CEC: (obviously unphased) You’re not getting chips. I’m not going to the store before Friday. We’re using up all the food we have already.

Husband: I don’t see how this benefits me.

CEC: It probably doesn’t. But I’m not buying you chips.

The next day, CEC caves and goes the grocery store. She comes home with…

… no chips.

ahaha, I laughed out loud at the last part about it not benefiting him. Too funny. Oh, and also the fact that bananas and milk are the things I can’t go without, either. Practically everything else I can deal with…but going without bananas and milk would have just been cruel and unusual punishment.
Give him a banana to replace the chips or something ;) Actually, don’t…that’s one less banana for you…

That’s what I was thinking. No banana for him! :)

I’m embarassed to even list the Husband’s favorite foods. Let’s just say they don’t belong on this blog.

Bahahaha that’s amazing! I hope that didn’t cause too many arguments. He should be happy you bought bananas, because honestly, how DO you live without them?! LIke any good husband, I’m sure he’ll learn to like cheez its lol

This is why I’m glad my husband gets his meals at work…I screamed for JOY when I heard this news!

Good for you for staying strong and not getting him chips!

It’s one of those wifely duties I guess I took on too early in the marriage. It used to be fun to pack up his lunch/make his breakfast - I spoiled him early on, and now I can’t get out of those chores.

Reply

Oh gosh, I love it :) My response would probably been along the lines of a) what kind of crazy person doesn’t like Cheez-Its? and b) If you don’t like it, pack your own lunch, ha! For me it’s orange juice and apples. If I run out of either, I have to scuttle my plans because I just can’t go without them for a long time :)

Shanna, like Banana June 23, 2011 at 12:39 pm

Hmmm, this didn’t resonate well with me. I hope that your husband doesn’t expect you to make his lunch and by him food. That convo wouldn’thave gone further than the first line which I would have said, “go by what you want and make what you want.”

Reply

cleaneatingchelsey June 23, 2011 at 1:28 pm

haha - no. he doesn’t “expect” me to. It’s a role I took early on in the marriage. In fact, during our pre-marital counseling, we had to write down things that we could do for each other every day that would “fill our love tank” (so corny) - making his lunch was one of them. When he gets home from work, he still has to do more work until 10 or 11 since he is a business owner, and that’s one thing he doesn’t have to worry about because I’ll happily do it.

Reply

Lisa @ Healthful Sense June 23, 2011 at 12:59 pm

haha!! i do the same thing. I can’t stand having a ton of food in the fridge. it has to be used up first before going to the store. BUT my husband will come home with new stuff all of the time. I try to tell him that we need to use up what we have first.

Reply

Haha! Good story! I don’t know how husbands have such a hard time finding the things right in front of them…. Probably because they think that’s what wives are for!

Reply

cleaneatingchelsey June 23, 2011 at 1:58 pm

I just think the male brain is waaay different than the female brain. We did a marriage series at my church, and one week was all about the differences between the way men and women think. Our brains are SO wired differently. He gave this analogy. Women’s brains are like spaghetti - everything can overlap and intertwine and everything can still get done. Men’s brains are like waffles - they compartmentalize and can’t do more than one thing at once. For days after that sermon, we called each other “spaghetti brains” and “waffle head”. :)
