one penny processor

July 8, 2011

There has never been a time in my life where I have not enjoyed a good deal.

My father has always been a bargain hunter, and while I don’t necessarily go out of my way to find a bargain, I love it when I get a deal. Less money spent on necessary items = more money for fun things! I especially enjoy when I get good deals on really nice items. Sure, I love a discount store just like the next person — but what I really like is going to the Coach Outlet store with a 30% off coupon and taking another 30% off of a sale price. Now that, my friends, is a good deal.

My saving money, of course, is music to my Dutch husband’s ears. I know I can home with oodles of new goodies and all I have to do is whip out the receipts to show him how much money I saved us. My favorite receipts to show him are Kohl’s receipts — because really, when has anyone EVER paid full price at Kohl’s? I sure haven’t.

I want you to meet the newest member of my family.

Everyone say hello to Big Bertha.

July 7, 2011 010
The other day I was straightening up our front hall closet (which is actually not near the front door at all — but is in the hallway!) and noticed a few items we received as wedding shower presents. It made me feel sad that there were kitchen appliances still cooped up in my closet without having being opened yet.

They deserved nice new owners who would give them the love and attention they truly need. Unfortunately, I could not be that person for them.

July 7, 2011 011
So today, we parted ways. The great thing about Bed Bath and Beyond is you can bring anything back from your registry at any point, no questions asked — no receipts needed! I may be frugal, but I lose receipts like it’s my job. I brought two items back to Bed Bath and Beyond, and I received a store credit of $131.08. I then skipped away in search of a food processor which would exceed my dreams.

July 7, 2011 012
I conducted a poll yesterday on Twitter and determined my best bet would be to go with a Kitchen Aid or Cuisinart processor. I have a mini 4 cup Cuisinart chopper, and while it got the job done — it didn’t get it done well. I have been salivating over drippy nut butters for the last year of my life without the proper tools to make it.

So when I saw Big Bertha on the shelf, I knew she had to be mine. She was just so.. shiny. I lugged her around the store and proceeded to tell the four employees who asked if I needed a cart “no thank you” — I just didn’t want to let her go. When I got up to the register, I pulled out my 20% out coupon (never leave home without one!). The total rang to $131.09.

I applied my store credit of $131.08.

I paid one penny for this girl.

July 7, 2011 015
If that’s not fate, I don’t know what is.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to go polish Big Bertha.

Question: Do you have a food processor? What is your favorite thing to make? Links make me happy.

Congrats on the new addition to your family, Chelsey! :) That is awesome, $0.01 is a VERY nice price. I totally know about the whole penny pinching Dutch genes, my mom & sister are THE WORST! I have paid full price for jeans while my family believes that I have truly *sinned*. They considered disowning me. Oh well… Lemmetellyou, they are the best jeans on earth! HA!

I so wish I had a food processor! But alas, there is no room left in my tiny apartment kitchen after all the generous birthday gifts I received. So I think it will have to wait…unless I stuff it under the bed. ;p

I remember going back to BB&B after my wedding and returning a bunch of stuff..no questions asked! They gave me the cash back, who does that!

Fantastic deal!
I have a Cuisinart 14 cup processor and tell her every day just how much I love her! ;)

My favorite things to make in it are… almond butter (obviously!), veggie burgers, pizza dough… and I would never make zucchini or carrot ANYTHING without the shredding disc!

that’s amazing!!!! I don’t have a bit food processor, but my vitamix usually takes care of the big things, and then I have a small food processor (which I got for $2.50 at Kroger!) and it works pretty well for small jobs!

I have a Williams-Sonome GC that I’m saving until I have the rest of the cash (or a good promo coupon!) to put towards a food processor. I want to make my own hummus - homemade hummus is soooo tasty! There are so many recipes I can’t try because my mini-chopper just can’t handle it.

My hubby got me a Black & Decker a few months back and it’s been doing a pretty good job. I use it almost daily for anything from hummus, black-eyed pea croquettes or curry chickpea patties, to banana soft serve, cashew cream and apple sauce (I like mine not 100% puréed). It’s awesome!!! Enjoy your new baby =)

One penny…that’s like my dream price. I am SO cheap it becomes annoying for everyone else. I literally have anxiety about spending money, even for drinks and dinner…I’d just rather look at a full bank account than be like all of my other college friends: in debt.

Reply

Amanda @ Running with Spoons July 8, 2011 at 10:17 am

That’s one sweet deal! My food processor is oooooooooold, and I hardly ever use it… I get most of my heavy blending done in the Vitamix, and for other things I just use the Magic Bullet. Nut butters are easy though… just dump in almonds and any added flavors you want, and mix away. Just make sure to scrape down the sides every now and then.

Oh dear, Chelsey. This is literally the next thing on my list to get. I’ve been eyeing them for a while and are probably getting pretty creeped out. I had a cheap one before - I mean this two ways: cheap because it was on sale for $30 and second because the plastic clip-in (to turn it on) has broke twice.

First time, I bought another one and returned it with the broken piece (bad, I know). Second time, I gave up and now it’s in storage. Hence the need for a new and GOOD one. So Kitchen Aid won the competition? If so, this may influence what I get! I want one so bad to make vegan and gluten free brownies…to start!

This post makes me want to get married…just for the free appliances. :P I’m so jealous of Big Bertha! I have a mini Cuisinart food processor too and it’s great for making small batches of homemade Larabars or banana soft serve, but I hate that I can’t make bigger batches in it. I’ve never tried making nut butter in it though - does it not work? :(

Reply

This post makes me want to get married too. Or at least rethink a quick vegas wedding in favor of a small one where we could register to get all kinds of goodies! ;)

I don’t have a Big Bertha, but it’s next on my list. I feel like I collect small appliances! On black friday, I got a waffle maker for $10 and it’s the love of my life. Definitely my favorite appliance! I recently used my left over kohl’s cash to get a rice cooker for like $8, but I don’t love it! I would rather just use the stove top.

I LOVE my food processor. They make the BEST protein smoothie/shakes. SUPER creamy since it’ll blend allllllll dayyyyyyy long. Just throw some ice, liquid, protein powder, whatever sweetner/flavors you’d like (cocoa, stevia, vanilla, etc.), blend and blend and blend, and ENJOY! =]

I dont know who designed it, but I cant fill it enough to get it to work right. I swear, it holds double what a normal food processor would, and I dont have the patience to scrape the sides every 30 seconds. It makes me crazy.

Bahahahahaha! Yes, I have Lola. My shiny red Kitchen Aid Mixer. I drooled over her crimson sheen for 2 years, BEFORE I had a house and kitchen (apartment too tiny for counter ornaments). When it came time to design my kitchen, I chose colors that would complement Lola, hoping and crossing all appendages that I would one day be in the presence of mixer glory. The day she arrived, I just sat and stared for an hour. But..my eye has been wandering lately to a possible food processor. . .
