there’s a reason for everything

July 8, 2011

I always knew I did things for a reason.

Let’s take, for example, on why I like to close my dresser drawers around here. For one, I like it when my house looks clean. Second of all, I really don’t enjoy slamming into them and getting a pear sized bruise that will linger for about two weeks in the summer time.

Or let’s look at my bedtime in the summer even though I’m not technically working. Yes, I could stay up until midnight every night. However, I know no matter what time I go to bed, my body will naturally wake up at 5 or 6. I’d like to have seven hours, not five thankyouverymuch.

Looking back now, I now know why I get my run on first thing in the morning if I will be doing so outside.

Last night I had the genius idea to sleep in until 6:15 (yahoo!) instead of 5:30 so I could do my run after I did my tutoring session with an old student this morning. In my mind, there were a few pro’s to this situation. 1) I get to sleep later. 2) I don’t have to rush to shower and get ready after my run. 3) I can run longer later after I have a substantial breakfast to fuel me!

It all looked like it was going to be a good run. It was sunny, but there was a slight breeze. I found my iPod that had been MIA since my 10 mile race Memorial Day weekend. I even had new music on my iPod (don’t judge me for my Justin Bieber download) to help me forge ahead.

I was ready ready ready ready to run!

I set out slow, as I usually go out too fast and end up getting side stitches. I had an idea in my mind of what route of mine I wanted to take, but at the last minute I decided to take a new route along the I&M Canal Trail. I’ve heard great things about the trail, so I decided to give it a go.

It was nice – loose gravel instead of concrete so it was easier on the legs – not particularly the most scenic of routes as the trail is along an industrial park, but I’ll take what I can get. The only bad thing? Absolutely no shade. Nada. Zip. Zilch.

I was about 1/2 mile on the trail (about 2 miles into the run total) when I realized it was going to be a hot one. – reeeally hot. But I forged ahead anyways, having to take walking breaks pretty frequently. When I made my turn around, I almost went straight back home, but then I realized there was a water fountain about 3/4 of a mile ahead of where I turn to go home.

I wanted that water bad.

Then I cursed myself for not turning around beforehand after I drank the water. Why, you ask? Because then that meant I had to go up all the ridiculous hills I had been avoiding.

But I finished, and only with the help of Justin Bieber calling me his ‘baby’ at least 25 times – and there was a little help from a lady who made me want to fist pump to “Raise Your Glass”. I’m glad I finished too – not only did I get some color, but now I get to eat at least 3 cups of SO Delicious ice cream tonight. It’s basically a win win situation here.

And I don’t have half of a finger, so that is why 6 are up.

Did I learn my lesson? Probably not.

Someone remind me next time that there are reasons why I do these things. And if I come back with some ridiculous statement about how I want to sleep more, cyber slap me.

Question: Have you had a challenging workout lately? Have you ever done something that you’ve regretted later?

If Icecream is involved….I’d say the decision wasn’t half bad. :)

Hooray for ice cream!! It’s always the *perfect* reason to run a tad further or push a tad harder…. I love the fact that when I work out later in the day I kill two birds with one stone: Run & Tan… Life is good!!!

Haha, I play this same game with myself when it comes to running outdoors. To be honest, I much prefer indoor running because it’s just more comfortable. I hate the cold, I hate the heat. I’m what you call, a high maintenance runner. ;)

I’m just high maintenance all around.

I live by the philosophy that everything happens for a reason, and you DO things for a reason. When I change up my routine, I always remember why I do things the way I do (kind of like you found out today ;) ). Hope you have a wonderful weekend!!

Haha, I’m the same way. I do things a certain way all the time, and then deviate for some reason…only to realize that my usual method is definitely the best!

I regretted taking my usual rest day this week and threw in some p90x yoga, I am still sore! I have been doing some Insanity and p90x dvds instead of just running and I can tell you for sure that my body is not used to it!

Ohhh, I’ve so been there! It’s so easy to think “ahh, I’ll sleep in and push X back a bit” in the morning when you’re groggy and tired or right as you’re dozing off…but I KNOW if I don’t get my butt out of bed I’ll regret that! Especially because once I’m up, I’m not tired. I’m way more likely to look forward to doing something if I have a plan in mind though :)
Kudos to you for still getting your run in, though! It has been sooo hot and humid here lately - I can’t even imagine going out much past 8 or 9!

Kudos for pushing through your run… I’m not sure if I could have lol. I hate to run in the heat, or in the rain, or in the cold, so if it’s going to be one of those runs, I prefer to keep it inside. I also need to get my workout done in the morning because that’s when I have the most energy and can give it my all. The longer I put it off, the lazier I become, and the more I slack off during my routine. SO I always regret putting a workout off ’till the afternoon.

the most challenging workout I’ve had in the past week was hiking at the grand canyon. It was gorgous but crazy hot!! Then, all the sudden there was a dust/wind storm with crazy rain and we were hiding behind a wall to get away from it. Guess it was challenging for a different reason than usual!

I’m so impressed you made it through 5.5 miles in that weather! Major kudos.

Yours sounds exactly like my run in the heat last week! It was so stinkin’ hot out and I had to deal with some hills to boot. :P I think that experience has scared me off of running outdoors for the rest of the summer.

Emily @ Perfection Isn't Happy July 9, 2011 at 8:34 am

I did that too many times at the beginning of the summer. Put off my run until the heat was at its peak…feeling like I was going to faint from the sun constantly beating down on me. I’d say it’s better to just get it over with early in the morning!

Good for you for sticking it out! I’ve only regretted a run once…because I ate a yogurt and then decided to run in 95 degree heat. Poor choice, my stomach was not pleased.

That was like my run last Sunday. I put it off for too long, so when I did finally go out, I was dying. One mile was reeeeally slow at one point, but I guess that’s what you get for not being smart with the times you choose to run. I also probably shouldn’t have ran today seeing as I have a bruise the size of Miami on my one calf. So every time that foot hit the pavement, that bruise burned. Stupid bruise :(

This morning I did 30 minutes of intervals on the elliptical and 1/5 miles on the treadmill. :)
