addiction relapse

July 28, 2011

Have you entered my Muir Glen Organics giveaway yet? The giveaway has been opened to TWO winners! Get your entries in!

They say it’s normal to have a relapse with any form of addiction.

It starts off slow – one sip here, another sip there. Then, those sips start to add up. One sip becomes one drink a week. That one drink a week becomes every other day. Suddenly, the addiction is full fledged and you  need a drink each and every day.

Somehow, some way I have found myself drinking coffee again.

I know, I know – not the worst thing in the world. There could be worse things, such as the Husband refusing to kill spiders for me. Or, the Husband refusing to clean up Charlie’s ::ahem:: business in the backyard.

But my coffee relapse isn’t coming cheap. I refuse to make coffee at home. When I wake up in the morning, the first thing on my mind is not to make a cuppa Joe. The first thing on my mind is always “when is breakfast?”

What I have been finding lately is that if I don’t drink coffee until after some food is in my stomach, then I’m good to go – my stomach does not hurt, and well, the caffeine high isn’t so bad either.

So the urge for coffee – preferably iced coffee at the moment – always happens to hit me when I’m out running errands. I will be innocently coming home from the grocery store, the post office, driving around the block just so I “happen to be out of the house” (I swear it counts), and well… the Starbuck’s drive through just happens to jump out at me. It doesn’t help that the employees are just too friendly and don’t charge me extra for adding any soy milk to my drink like some Starbuck’s do.

I’ve got it down to a science. Susie or Bobby come on the mic asking if they could interest me in a new passionberry lemonade – and I want to laugh. Don’t they see I’m coming? We’re at this at least once a day by now – they should know what I’m going to order.

No thank you. Can I please have a grande iced coffee, light ice, extra soy?”

Sure Lady Who Comes Here Too Much When She Shouldn’t Drink Coffee Every Day – that will be $2.65.”

And then I am somewhat proud/somewhat ashamed that I know how much my drink order costs.

The thing about this is I have been using gift cards as of late – my birthday funds are quickly dwindling, however. This will be a problem in a week or so when my once filled to the brim gift cards that brought me so much caffeinated joy run out. Then, I will be scrounging around in our change jar and paying in quarters so the Husband doesn’t realize how bad my addiction has gotten. I’ll be throwing away my drink containers in neighbors’ garbage cans, just so he doesn’t see.

I tried to get through one day without the iced coffee – and I succeeded yesterday. Today, I rewarded myself with an iced coffee for getting through my day yesterday without it. What a sick and twisted system I have got going on here.

While I really do love my coffee, I hate relying on it to perk me up and get me through my day. I have been waking up more groggy than usual, have been “crashing” and wanting a nap every afternoon (which isn’t always a bad thing), and have been getting headaches without the aide of my drink.

This is all fun and games, of course, until I go back to work.

I know if I continue on this track, I am going to need coffee every day to get me through the work day – and that will be bad news. I already had one student comment last year that I was “in a much better mood when I have Starbuck’s in the morning.” Thanks for noticing kid – I think.

Sometimes I wish I had another addiction, like cleaning my house… or knowing when to keep my mouth shut when I see an opportunity for a smart aleck one liner towards the husband – but no, my addiction is coffee.

At least I’m not in denial anymore. I suppose I’m on the road to recovery… except I’m not because I don’t want to be.

Please don’t scheme an intervention on me – I’m not ready for rehab yet.

Question: What is an “addiction” you have? Can you get through your day without coffee?

Hm, maybe I should try waiting until after eating to have coffee and see if that helps me…

I lied - I kind of had a stomachache… not too bad, but it was still there. I guess I wrote that while I was still on a caffeine high.

I just relinked my iced coffee in my last post, about 2 mins ago that i hit publish. Girl..make your own iced coffee. Just brew coffee, let it cool down or put it in the fridge, pour over ice with milk/cream/stevia/etc and voila…you will save so much money. I can down an iced coffee in like 2 secs. I am a power drinker..hah!

But i know what you mean…the urge to just pop thru ‘Bucks is a real slippery slope. ha!

Funny you posted this! I am going through the same thing with coffee. I started to cut back from 5-6 times a week to 3 max, and did good but then slipped back up and this week has been tough (haven’t had coffee since Sunday) - groggy in the mornings, and headaches every day :( But I love it too much to give it up completely! Oh and the french press the hubby bought, not helping matters! haha

I got completely away from coffee too until I smelled it one day and have been craving it ever since, I have a coffees shop within walking distance which is a huge problem!

We were just talking about addictions at work today! Mine is definitely water! I can barely go an hour without sipping on some! My second addiction would be my homemade granola bars. YUM! I’ve eaten them every week since about Memorial Day. And not just one or two a week, but sometimes one or two a day! At least both addictions are healthy :)

I drink coffee at least once or twice a day. I can definitely make it through the day without it but it’s something I really enjoy so why would I stop? I almost never buy coffee out though (mostly because I don’t do dairy or soy), I brew at home and make iced coffee after letting it chill in the freezer for a while. As Averie already mentioned, it saves a ton of moo-lah! :)

I definitely used to be addicted to coffee and it was not pretty. Thankfully I stopped and though I still LOVE it I try to go days without it and when I do have it, usually go for decaf. After about a month with no caffeine I had ONE cup last month at about 3pm and literally could not sleep that night - I didn’t connect the the 2 until I was lying in bed and realized I had just crossed everything off the to-do list and rearranged and cleaned the entire living room beginning at 9pm.

I loooove iced coffee. So refreshing - but yes, I do limit it and never buy it out. It helps that there’s only one place in town that I can get it with a non-dairy milk, and it also helps that I’m super cheap :P I don’t consider myself addicted though. (isn’t that what they all say?) But really, I’m fine without it (no grogginess, etc)…but it tastes good, is refreshing and I’d much rather have it! lol

I do love coffee! If it helps - I had a really bad addiction to sugar so I decided to give up sweets for 30 days (that’s how long they say it takes to kick an addiction). And thought the first days were brutal - by the second and third week I didn’t want to give up because I was so close and by the time it was done I honestly didn’t crave sweets afterwards. Maybe just see if you can do it for 30 days and you might find your need totally goes away! Best of luck!

One thing I’ve realized is that I like, no love, the taste of a good cup of coffee. So I try, just like you, to go without it some days, so that I don’t get back to my crazy gotta-have-a-cup-to-function days.

Coffee is so delicious, I say, just enjoy it.

I stopped drinking caffeineated beverages regularly last year. I was always holding a cup of tea while teaching, and realized that I could probably live without it, and I wasn’t sure if I even liked it anymore. My energy levels seems to be totally fine without caffeine, which makes me happy, and have a cup of tea or coffee when I feel like it, or when I’m at a coffee shop.

Love the photo of the iced coffee in the grass - so cute!

I have a cup of coffee every day. Just one. I’ve never deemed it as a “pick me up” or “something I need to get through the day” (I actually function just fine without the bean.. I tried giving it up because I thought I was addicted and my energy levels remained the same, even without.. so I started drinking it again). If you ARE fearful that your body is going to start relying on it, could you try out decaf? or half caf? It sounds like you genuinely enjoy it (rightfully so. Coffee is amaze!!!) and I don’t want you to deprive your pretty little self :)

speaking of your pretty little self.. j’adore the new pro pic! stop being so gorg!

You should register your giftcards on their website! Then after like 10 drinks you get free modifications (at ALL Starbucks) and you get free drinks for your birthday, for because, free snacks for because, and after 25 drinks you become a ‘Gold Member’ and get a card with your name on it and free drinks every 10-15 drinks… It’s a dirty trick to get you to go more often, but it’s working for me…

So I get a medium (ok…actually a large), get it black then add my own almond milk and a little stevia. And not that I know or anything…but (here) it comes to $1.05 taxes in. How could you NOT get an iced coffee for that price?

And hey, it’s a way to get rid of 5 useless pennies everyday….plus the dollar.

It’s kind of become a routine to see $2.65 come out of my bank account every morning. And no, I don’t want to do that math on how much I’m losing per year but hey, if the coffee makes me a better person than I am without it, I guess it’s worth it.

Ah, for me, the addiction is “dessert”. Whether it’s a little piece of chocolate or some peach crumble or ice cream or froyo, I like to end my meals with a sweetness. Sometimes I can fight it with the Extra gum in Dessert Delight flavors…. but sometimes, I need the real deal. It’s a killer.

I think it’s funny that they write “EZ ice.” My S-bux writes Lt. ice, as in lite ice. I actually have managed to make it 22 years without developing a coffee addiction. I’m proud considering I went through a year period where I had coffee every morning. Then I just stopped one day. Joey stopped drinking coke (and soda in general) at the beginning of the year and I got in his car last week and he had at least 4 empty cans in there!! So disappointed :(

I think I’ve quit 3 times so far and all it takes is one lazy morning where I convince myself I’ll just one today only to get moving…yeah, and a year later I’m still getting one daily. It used to be a mocha, but I’ve worked my way down to iced coffee with a mocha once or twice a week as a treat. Oh, the money wasted!!!

Aahaha I feel you on this one! I love love love my coffee each morning, I really do! I’m not addicted - there’s no withdrawal headaches, I don’t get stressed or shaky or anything if I don’t have it; it’s just ‘meh. no coffee.’ BUT I do love it SO much..especially a soya cappuccino……OH nothing compares!

Coffee! I cannot get through the day without it! I’m usually making it in the morning before I’m fully awake :)

I’m back on coffee too. I was off for about 6 months with my regular hours, but now that I have a wacky schedule I need it! Just half regular half decaf. And the occassional iced americano from Sbux:)

I’m right there with you… coffee is my ULTIMATE addiction. Hot, iced, blended, and any and everywhere in between :)

Girl, I swear you just told my EXACT story! I just “happened” upon some gift cards that have been hiding away in my wallet for months now. When I got them for my birthday, I was like, “eh, I’ll just save these for a rainy day!” Well, then the rainy day happened…ok, so maybe it was a bright sun-shiney cloudless day, but work with me here! I had my first iced coffee in years…then a couple of days later I had another…and that’s when I realized I’d had my relapse. It started out innocently enough…guess that’s what they all say! Haha!
