Veggies — that’s what’s for dinner tonight! Or in my case — every night.
Today, my mom and I headed out to Naperville, Illinois, which hosts Veggie Fest annually. If you’re a long time reader, you might remember last year when we went to veggie fest as well. We were excited to hear when Veggie Fest was returning, as it was filled with awesome vendors that neither one of us had tried before last year. We were really anticipating this year to be just as great!
And what could be greater than seeing four foot long dreadlocks? Pretty much nothing — well, kind of.
When we got to the festival, we immediately got in line for out free Nature’s Path tote bags (which we got last year as well!) and some free products (that I cannot eat but will be making an appearance in the Husband’ lunch very soon). After, we hit up the food ticket booth — I spent $5 for 5 food tickets.
Before actually paying for food, though, there were samples to be had! My mom and I each had a few pieces of cashew cheese — I tried the smoked gouda and the pepper jack. The smoked gouda won in my book! It was pretty good, but the texture kind of freaked me out a bit, I’m not going to lie.
We also stopped by the Clif Bar booth, but none of their samples were gluten free, which was quite a disappointment!
We were both kind of disappointed in the samples/free products area this year. Last year there was a lot more tasting going on — oh well — more food to be bought!
With my 5 tickets, I spent 4 of them on a beet, apple, and carrot juice. Might seem like a bit much to spend my tickets on, but the juice was just calling my name.
Luckily Mom only spent 2 of her tickets on an ear of corn, so collectively we had 4 tickets left over. Just enough to try a Mock Tuna salad!
Funny side note before I tell you how amazing this salad was. The girl who was working the booth recognized me from eating at Borrowed Earth Cafe a few months ago. Apparently it’s not very common for a girl to be carrying around a huge DSLR camera with her everywhere! With that being said, “hi” to that friendly lady! (who I did not ask her name — oops!)
Now to that Mock Tuna Salad — um, oh my gosh my mom and I are still in a tizzy as to how delicious it was. I have to recreate it. I would have liked for the chickpeas to be a little less pureed, but overall it was awesome!
After we ate our afternoon snacks, we headed over to a natural, organic skin care product line booth, where my mom bought us some natural deodorant. I’ve never tried any natural products in that department before, so I’m excited to see how it goes!
Before we left, we went to a cooking presentation — more free food? Don’t mind if I do! We saw a presenter make a tomato chickpea salad and some sort of tofu curry dish, which was good, but there wasn’t much “curry” to it if you ask me! It reminded me of a filling you would find in a chicken pot pie!
We both agreed that Veggie Fest was better last year, but it was still fun to go to!
Until next year, Veggie Fest!

Looks like a great time
You best get on that mock tuna salad- there is a recipe in Alicia Silverstones Kind Diet cookbook and her website has some posted.
I certainly have made my own — but just mushed stuff together.
That juice was worth it — I love that combo.
It seems like Veggie Fests are kind of like…..you know what they say. Pizza? How bout that. Anyways — even when it’s not so great? It’s still good.
TOTALLY agree!
I wonder if that person ever gets a sore neck from their hair being so heavy! lol. I have never tried a fresh juice! I want to sometime!
I felt SO energized after drinking it!
I have never heard of veggie fest but I wish we had one where I live!! That sounds like a lot of fun. I’ve been wanting to try a fresh juice like the ones they have at whole foods but I never knew what to order together, that looks great!
Usually they will have blends that people commonly get - or just ask! I’m sure someone would be helpful!
Looks like a gooood time. But I hate it when you go to stuff like that and can’t eat a lot of the things because of allergies. I can’t even tell you how many things I ate with my eyes because I didn’t know exactly what was in them and couldn’t risk it because of allergies. Ahh well. Still fun, even just to be in the atmosphere.
That juice sounds SO good! I have the same problem when I go to events like that. Glad you were able to enjoy the salad. I don’t like the taste of fish so I wonder…did it taste much like tuna?
I definitely would have been disappointed in the lack of curry! I love that you always do fun things with your mom! I live close to mine and we always have dates on weekends!
We sure do have our fun!
Omg I *just* got done posting pics of the fest I went to today.
Looks like we were both having fun with festivals. Sorry about the lack of suitable food options for you though
Looks like an awesome time! I also attended my city’s Vegetarian Festival, and I also received that same tote bag! I think my favorite part is seeing all the restaurants that I can’t wait to try haha
Sounds like fun! My mom and I would totally do something like that together
.
What a fun event! The cashew cheese would scare me a bit too, I have to admit!
I love the carrot apple beet juice combo:) Have a good night, Chelsey!
How cool! veggie fest?! what a great idea. I wish my city hosted something like that.
I LOVE your turquoise necklace in that photo!
Thanks! I’m pretty sure I got it at Target circa 2006!
Cashew cheese? What was it comprised of???
er… cashews? haha!
I almost went to this! But decided not to do the hour and a half plus drive in from the city… maybe next year, glad you had fun!
Veggie Fest looks like so much fun!! We have something similar in Dallas called Taste of Dallas it’s not all veggies but they have tons of fun food to try!!!
I thought I was the only one who still said “Tizzy”
So cool!!! I wish my town had something like this!
I wish we had something like that near me…maybe they do up in DC! I’ll have to look into it.
Sounds like it was a fun day with your mom
What a great idea for a festival! I would love to go to something like that! And I totally would have went for that juice too….looks yummy!!!
Seriously though, if its a festival and there is food? What’s not to love?
Oof — yeah g-frand, dat shit looks incredibly pureed. With that being said, it sounds deeeelish
Mmmmm I love tuna salad!!! I’m excited for you to recreate it and post the recipe.
Sorry you didn’t get many gf samples. That fest looks so fun though!
Wow, how fun! I have only been to Naperville once, but I love it there! We have good friends who live there and it’s my dream city to live one day…i have pretty low aspirations I guess
I do love Naperville - especially the downtown area. I almost went to college there!
I had no idea what that cheese was when I first saw the picture! Sounds like such a fun festival. Please re-make that tuna salad. And share the recipe with us
I love mock tuna/chicken salad. I used to make it all the time.
I’ll be curious to hear about the deodorant - I wear natural deodorant but find that none of them keep me as dry as the more common brands so I’d love to find one that works!
The woman told me that the thing that makes you not sweat with normal deodorants are the “anti-perspirant” which is the chemicals. She said you might get wet underarms, but that’s because theres nothing blocking your pores.
oh my I spent a summer during college in Naperville and even though I was a vegetarian I worked “Rib Fest”!! I needed a temporary job and got hired at the smoothie booth
LOVED Naperville and the surrounding area, it was gorgeous and such neat activities!
My best friend LOVES rib fest - she lives in Naperville!
That sucks that it wasn’t as good as last year - but it still looks like an awesome event! I wish we had something like that here.
I would have spent all my tickets on that juice too. I loooove beet & apples in juice!
So I know that I am not commenting on the main point of this post but that necklace you had on is awesome!
I’ve never heard of the Veggie Fest in Naperville! I only went to one summer fest this summer and it wasn’t anything special! I’ll have to check out more next summer, maybe even this one!
I follow them on Twitter (@VeggieFest) so I’ll definitely get notified for next year’s!
Ahh, you went to VeggieFest! I SO wanted to go, but couldn’t convince anyone to make the drive out there with me from downtown Chicago. I make a similar mock tuna salad all the time. I don’t puree the chickpeas, I either just crush them with a fork or run them briefly in the food processor so they retain some texture. I also add sweet pickle relish. Delicious!
To a food-blogging female, delicious, fresh juices are like a cute, quality pair of shoes.
So. Worth. It.
Thanks so much for the re-cap! I wanted soooo badly to go but had some friends in town that I had to show around the city and they didn’t want to go to the fest
