wiaw… changing it up

August 24, 2011

I am probably the queen of eating the same thing over and over again every day without getting bored of it. People probably think I’m weird (okay, that’s a given), but I could care less if I eat different things every day. Some people also think that’s “bad” for you or instantly label you with some sort of eating “thing”, but to be perfectly honest with you, I’m 100% happy eating the same thing every day because they are the things I crave.

Some days though, I have to change it up for my sanity. Which is funny because my version of “changing it up” is pretty much minimal.

So how did I change it up for this “What I Ate Wednesday” edition?

Peas and Crayons

A special thanks to Jenn for being our hostess!

Let’s take breakfast for example…

instead of cold blueberries in my oats, I heated up about 1/2 cup of blueberries and stirred them into my oats. In the bowl:

  • 1 serving voluminous overnight oats
  • 1/2 cup blueberries (heated in the microwave for about 1 minute)
  • 1 tbsp. coconut flakes
  • cinnamon
  • 1 tbsp. (okay maybe 2) peanut butter

And then there were more changes on my way to work. And that’s a lie because I refuse to give up my addiction. Seriously, it’s ridiculous.

Sorry I’m not sorry the Starbuck’s girl and I are on a first name basis. You’re jealous.

I was almost going to stay in for lunch today, but I knew I needed the break from the building after a long morning of teaching with very little “specials” time for the kids. In fact, their only special was held in our classroom, which meant my classroom was buzzing all morning long! I need adult time to keep me sane. So, we headed out to Jason’s Deli where I did not take a picture of my food. I did, however, draw you an amazing representation of what I ate.

My snack today was different as well. Usually after school I will eat almonds and raisins or some kind of bar, but today I was in the mood for some more protein. I feel like I’ve been lacking in that department lately, so I tried to make up for it with some Greek yogurt straight from the tub. Warning: driving and eating Greek yogurt is hard. Don’t do it.

Today for dinner, I was in the mood for something hot. It drastically cooled off this afternoon leaving our house breezy and temperate. It was absolutely fabulous, which meant our dinner had to be as well. I was craving comfort food, so I whipped up one of my favorites: Unstuffed Cabbage Roll Casserole — it hit the spot with some gluten free oatmeal scones I had hiding in the freezer. PS: That old recipe and pictures makes me cringe with embarrassment. I think I need a do-over. Whatever, it’s still good.

And now for my nighttime snack, I think a piece of zucchini bread with peanut butter or some granola is calling my name. Because let’s face it, I can’t change that much in one day. Granola stays — always.

Question: Do you eat the same types of foods every day or do you change it up?

I change it up - if I don’t I overdo certain things and am turned off them for a long time! I also meal plan my main meals so that helps to switch it up more :)

I love your representation of what you ate.. It’s a beautiful drawing :) I’m pretty good about switching up what I eat.. but there are certain foods that I would eat over and over again!

Well thank you - I obviously spent a llot of time drawing that. ;)

I’m the same way, I guess you could call me a “ahbit” eater ;) I like the foods I like and I eat them over and over again. Some people like to label me because of that, but it’s silly. Why WOULDN’T you eat the foods you like? Every now and then I experiment with a new recipe and if I really like it, it becomes one of my meals that I eat weekly :) Happy WIAW!

Tiff @ Love Sweat and Beers August 24, 2011 at 8:43 am

I eat the same foods quite often. I especially eat the same thing for breakfast, lunch and snack all week long, then change it up the following week. It works for me - and it makes shopping easier!

Thanks for the illustration. :)

According to my husband I change it up too often. He always says, “I wish you’d made the same meal twice for once!” He exaggerates, but I do switch things up a lot. He, on the other hand, grew up with the same 7 meals in rotation week after week. Boring.

Your idea of mixing things up is my idea of mixing things up…. ‘today instead of a salad with almonds sprinkled on top, I’ll eat them on the side… I’ll heat the bread today… ect…” …Your drawing of your lunch ROCKED!!!! :)
I hear you on the ‘adult time’ when I taught Kindergarten, I swear when I got around adults I would annoy people with talk of world issues and politics becasue I missed big people talk so much!

I could probably challenge you for the title of “queen of eating the same thing”. When I find something that I like, I tend to stick to it, and the few times I DO deviate from my normal stuff, I end up wishing I had just gone with what I love. Still, trying new things is great too because it lets you find new favorites :D

I’m like the Queen of Always Eating the Same Thing. Thing is, until you brought this up, I didn’t realize how boring my eats were! I just get stuck in major food ruts..but I’m okay with this because I love what I’m eating at the moment. :)

Reply

Dorry August 24, 2011 at 11:50 am

I’m with you - I eat the things I crave, and typically that is pretty similar from day-to-day. But I will switch it up every now and then. I bring my lunch/dinner/snack to work from home most days, but I’ll stop at Whole Foods a couple times a week and get something delicious that I don’t have at home. :)

Kaitlyn@TheTieDyeFiles August 24, 2011 at 1:24 pm

Wow, your lunch looks delicious! :) But microwaving blueberries, I might give that a try on tonight’s oats. My strategy is to plan a week of food, so for the week my snacks are usually the same, and I plan about 3 meals to cook throughout the week and then I eat the leftovers for lunches and dinners. My oats are always different, based on what I’m feelin’ every night!

Well, I love to change it up, but I will eat oatmeal every day and still don´t get bored. Also, I could eat roasted veggies 4 times in a row. But I love cooking so much, it´s really hard to cook the same meal twice within a short period of time!

They are some foods I do eat all the time like yogurt, and oats. But I do try and vary them up as have in the past ate the same foods day in and day out and now I like to eat something different each day. but brekkie is usually the same

Reply

Danielle August 24, 2011 at 2:15 pm

I eat the same thing a lot, usually salad with some sort of grilled/baked chicken or tofu for lunch, english muffin with pb & banana for bfast, and leftovers for dinner…but this week I have been mixing it up with smoothies for bfast, cereal and milk or yogurt for lunch, and restaurant week meals out for dinner (I hope I don’t die of salt overdose or lack of veggies overdose)

Reply

cleaneatingchelsey August 24, 2011 at 4:57 pm

haha - salt overdose is a killer when you go out to eat! I rarely go out to eat, and when I can eat anything at the restaurants, they usually are some sort of veggies.

Making my own iced coffee is a must-do. Pour coffee over ice, add cream/sweetener, roll with that. I have to girl or I’d go broke! I can suck down one of those starbucks in like 3 secs flat!

And I tend to eat similar foods every day. Similar, not the exact same. Food groove, not a food rut.

Reply

cleaneatingchelsey August 24, 2011 at 4:58 pm

I think I’m going to try the cold brew method tonight and see how it works!

Reply

Averie @ Love Veggies and Yoga August 24, 2011 at 4:59 pm

Just make coffee like you normally would. Drink some hot. Or not.

Then put the leftovers, the whole pot if you want, in the fridge. The next day, there’s your iced coffee. Dump that over ice, sweeten/cream, done.

you just made ice cofffee for 4 cents rather than 4 dollars!

Fran@ Broken Cookies Don't Count August 24, 2011 at 2:35 pm

SO many times I eat the same thing everyday. I think so many of us are creatures of habit. That’s not always a bad thing as long as the things you eat are healthy things. I try to change up. I learned when losing weight with Weight Watchers, that you need to change up your foods because your body burns different foods at differently and you need to change up to keep it burning properly. I keep trying different things, but I end up with my usuals.

I do tend to eat a lot of the same things because like you, it’s what I really crave.

I also bring the same snacks/meals to work simply because it’s simple (like a peanut butter sandwich!)…plus I enjoy em’ :)
