salad bar of my dreams

September 20, 2011

Last night, my mom and I had a very important event to attend (aka: a jewelry party). Seeing as we find any excuse to go out for dinner together, we ended up at Sweet Tomatoes before the party!

September 19, 2011 001

Sweet Tomatoes is one of our favorite restaurants — an limitless salad bar? Sign me up please! Sweet Tomatoes is all about fresh and healthy ingredients, so I never skimp on filling my plate up.

September 19, 2011 004
And unfortunately, someone’s Grandpa will be forever stamped into my blog. Sorry, Gramps.

September 19, 2011 003

The best part about Sweet Tomatoes? The coupons! Every week they send me a big stack of them in my e-mail. My mom and I both ate tonight for about $20 — which is roughly the same price as one of my Whole Foods salad bar purchases. Don’t judge me.

Every month, Sweet Tomatoes has a theme, and their prepared salads and sides go along with it. I think this month was a Cuban theme, which explains all the delicious bean side salads I loaded my plate up with. I always check their website before I go to figure out what specials they have, and today I noticed on their monthly flyer that they now tell you what is gluten free on their specials menu!

image
I was, however, disappointed that on the signs in the restaurant did not tell you if an item was gluten free or not. Seeing as not everyone checks menus online before going to a restaurant, that could save people the extra effort of having to ask a staff member which items are safe to eat. Needless to say, I’m glad I looked online beforehand because I loaded up!

September 19, 2011 006
And because a birds’ eye view doesn’t always give you the full picture, please enjoy my 5 pound salad plate.

September 19, 2011 008
And a first plate is never the last plate… ever. I of course had to go back for more bean salad and roasted potato salad.

Every time I go to Sweet Tomatoes, I am always happy and satisfied — except they could stand to bring their steamed vegetables back… and maybe get a hummus bar — just sayin’.

I’m excited to see what’s cooking for next month!

Question: Have you ever been to a Sweet Tomatoes? What would be in your dream salad bar?

I LOVE Sweet Tomatoes! Hubs and I used to go every week back when we lived in Orlando…but alas, there are none in VA! We did go out of our way to visit the one in Raleigh, however, on our way back from visiting friends in Charlotte, and we even made a detour on our SoCal trip earlier this month to visit ST’s West Coast twin, Souplantation!!

Sadly we don’t have a Sweet Tomatoes around here :( I’d be there at least once a week if we did though!

Wish we had one nearby - I’ve never heard of Sweet Tomatoes before! I’d like lots of mexican themed toppings - guac, beans, etc!

I just went there this weekend for breakfast - delish, but not too many vegan options. Their lunch and dinner is the bomb though - it’s one of my all time favorite restaurants and I can always leave feeling SUPER full!

I’ve been to Sweet Tomatoes near Clearwater, Fla. It is wonderful!! I couldn’t believe the choices and as you say, the first plate is Never the last plate!! I would have eaten there several times, but my friend who I was visiting doesn’t like it. I can’t imagine why?!?! I think Gramps is cute!!

I’ve never been there - looks great! My ideal salad bar would have tons of vegan and vegetarian options with everything clearly labeled. Also great soups + bread.

I love Sweet Tomatoes!!! I cannot say this enough! The only place I’ve ever had it is in Florida and I would go there every day if I could…their soups and breads are so yummy too.

I ADORE salad bars!!! I always eat way too much, but at least it’s the good stuff. We need to start compiling a list of things to do together whenever we get the chance to hang. I have a feelign it would get long real fast since we’re basically internet twins.

Mmmm…that salad looks incredible…Sweet Tomatoes rocks! I’ve never been or anytihing, but I can tell from this post, lol! My dream salad would have grilled salmon, blueberries, baked kabocka squash, lots of mixed greens, bell peppers, avocado, balsamic vinegar, and a hefty sprinkle of pink himalayan sea salt. Yum! <3 xyx

I’ve only been to Sweet Tomatoes once :( I think I was distracted from the actual food because my then bestie and I decided it would be fun to go on a father-daughter double date…which just turned out to be extremely awkward. Oh, teenage years. We used to have a place in Boulder called Boulder Salad Co. where my family would go all.the.time. The giant salad bar rocked!

Wow, if only we had one of those in Vancouver. I can assure the restaurant it would do well here with all of our alternative eating trends! I LOVE the idea of the theme - that’s a great way to keep things fresh and interesting! And I’ve never met a salad bar I didn’t have a small crush on ;)

I’ve never been to Sweet Tomatoes but it looks incredible. I love that they cut the beets to look like crinkle cut fries. Maybe kids would eat healthy veggies if you cut them like that!

SO not judging the $20 WF plate. Been there, done that. Your salad looks massive and delicious, I wish there was a Sweet Tomatoes around here!

Lara @ TresLaLa September 20, 2011 at 1:58 pm

We don’t have Sweet Tomatoes here, but I used to frequent something similar (SouperSalad) when I lived in Houston. Loved it! We have SoupPlantation here, also similar, but I’ve never been. Hubby isn’t a fan of this type of restaurant (not sure why), and the one local had some E Coli breakout a few years ago. Turned me off of it!

Sweet Tomatoes is the bomb! I love their themes, but I’ve never thought of going to their website to check it out first.

When I went to visit my sister in Dallas, they had SWEET POTATOES instead of regular ones. I was in heaven. I may or may not have eaten two of them.

I agree, hummus bar would push it right over the top!

Tessa @ Amazing Asset September 20, 2011 at 2:56 pm

Oh wow, I am rather jealous of your life right now, I have never even heard of that place! I would go crazy over the hummus bar :) And obviously tons of fresh veggies would be on my salad bar with fruit, a variety of protein options, nuts and seeds, and several choices of dressing :)

Alexa @ Simple Eats September 20, 2011 at 3:50 pm

A hummus bar is an awesome idea! When I went to London, there was a place called Hummus Brothers and literally they served you a bowl of hummus with warm wheat pita and whatever you wanted on top (chicken, veggies, more chickpeas!) and you ate til your heart’s content. America should get on that, no?

I have never heard of Sweet Tomatoes but it sounds like an awesome place! :) I love themes with foods so it would be fun to try out their menu on the various weeks! My ideal salad bar would need every vegetable possible except olives and cucumbers could stay away, green chile hummus, nuts, and dried fruit. Warm pitas for the hummus would be nice too!

Reply

Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin September 20, 2011 at 6:12 pm

Oh wow that place looks like my idea of heaven!

My ideal salad bar would have all the normal fixings (lettuces, veggies, etc) plus hummus, tofu, marinated artichoke hearts, roasted butternut squash, some bean salads, feta cheese, and guac!
