heart of the matter

October 2, 2011

For some reason up until a few months ago, I had never read anything by one of my (now) favorite authors.

I don’t know why, but for the longest time I thought I would not enjoy Emily Giffin’s novels. What a bunch of bologna! I love Emily Giffin! I hate to admit this, but I actually never even picked up one of her books until after I saw the movie Something Borrowed (which I thought was awesome, by the way). My best friend owns all of Giffin’s books and when she found out I had never read anything by her, she made sure to let me borrow all of the books.

I finished Something Blue, Love the One You’re With, and Baby Proof within a week.

If that’s not saying something about her writing style, then I don’t know what would. Her books are easy to read, have great story lines that switch from character to character (sometimes), and tell a story from a perspective that you may not have ever thought about before.

When I found out my bestie had Giffin’s new book, she graciously let me borrow it (even before she read it – now that’s a best friend!).

I dove into Heart of the Matter really quickly and could not put it down. This is a story told from the perspective of two women, a single mom whose son has never met his father, and a seemingly perfect wife of a surgeon and mother of two young children. After Valerie’s (the single mom) son Charlie is involved in an accident, she becomes vulnerable and in the middle of quite a situation.

I loved this story because as you will see, this story is told from both sides. Many times we end up judging people for their actions because we can only see one side of the story, but Giffin does a great job of showing what really matters most in life.

If you’ve read anything by Giffin, you are really going to enjoy this book!

Question: What is the last good book you read?

I am so glad you gave Giffin a try! She is one of my favorites and I, like you, gobbled up 3 books in a week! She is brilliant.
I recently finished the Hunger Games series and loved it. Now I’m on a Jane Eyre again. Such a goodie!

Something Blue of Emily Giffin is the last good book I’ve read….it hasn’t been the last book I’ve read, but the last GOOD book! :) Sounds like I need that one now!

I recently finished Sarah’s Key and I thought it was great. Very emotional but the way the author combines the story from 1942 and the story from 2002 was flawless, and I couldn’t stop reading until I knew what happened!

Are her books meant to be read in sequence? Or do they not have anything to do with each other? Thanks for the review tho - I’ll have to pick those up!

Something Borrowed and Something Blue are in sequence - the others not so much.

Have you read anything by Kristin Hannah? I loved “Winter Garden.”

I’ve seen the Emily Giffin books but have yet to read one. It would be a nice change from the series I just finished.

I honestly just finished reading Baby Proof last night! It’s the 3rd Emily Giffin book I’ve read and I absolutely want to read her other novels too. The plots always sound so typical and boring to me, but the way she writes is so unique and I always gets hooked!

I really enjoy Emily Giffin’s books too. She is great at drawing you in from the get-go. I read them years ago and was psyched when I heard the movie was being released. Still haven’t seen the movie though. It’s on my queue.

Have you read “Remember Me?” By Sophie Kinsella? I really enjoyed that one too. Another great one is “Skinny Dip” By: Carl Hiaasen.

Oh, I feel like I haven’t read a good book in so long!! In college, I was an English Lit and Writing Major so I was reading famous literature ALL the time. Since then, I’ve read hardly anything worth mentioning. I’m lucky if I read a magazine article these days let alone an entire novel. But I have heard great things about Emily Griffin.

haha when I was in college, I was in Children’s Lit classes - so I was constantly reading young adult books!

I love love love Emily Giffin’s books!!! They are some of my favorites and I am so thrilled they are being made into movies. Even if movies are never as good as the books.

I was the same with Emily Giffin’s books! I used to say-gah-another so-so author-but wow was I wrong!!! I loved Something Borrowed because of how easy it was to follow the story<3

Which one is your favorite? I think mine is and will always be Something Borrowed-there is just something about the good girl winning that is so addicting!!!

I like her books too. They get me all worked up, but you’re right, it’s awesome how she shows everyone’s perspective.

I’m currently well into Catching Fire (the second book in the Hunger Games trilogy). It’s amazing!

I love Something Borrowed! I haven’t read her others, though I have heard of Heart of the Matter. I should give it a try soon; I’m out of reading material right now and have already gone through my other favourite - Philippa Gregory’s Tudor novels. She makes history scandalous ;) (She wrote The Other Boleyn Girl that the movie was made from).

I just finished all 3 books in The Hunger Games trilogy and loved them! Similar to your first thoughts about Emily Giffin, I did not think that I would like the Hunger Games because they’re so different from what I usually read, but I was pleasantly surprised when I couldn’t put them down! Now I’m ready for the movie to come out!

LOVE HER! Those are my go-to books when I have run out of things to read which is probably why I HATED the movie. I hope she has another new one soon!!

I’ve never read any of her stuff, but will be sure to check them out :)

I was like that with Jodi Picoult - one of my friends recommended ‘The Pact’ (favourite book ever) to me one day, and then I couldn’t put any of her books down!
