attack of the hunger beast

Have you entered my Daily Gourmet giveaway yet? You have until tomorrow to enter!

I’m assuming someone called the Hunger Beast and asked him to join me yesterday because I was absolutely insatiable all day long! No sooner did I finish eating a meal did I begin to feel another wave of constant gnawing at my stomach. Most times that wouldn’t be a problem, but when I am at work with a limited amount of food, this can cause me to be a crabby girl!

I was trying to figure out why in the world I was so hungry yesterday, and I think I have got it. I was much more active the past four days than I usually am, and my body wants more food to make up for it (um, duh!). I’m not one to deprive, so I say bring on the extra food!

Thanks again to Jenn for hosting What I Ate Wednesday!

Peas and Crayons

Breakfast — 5:45 AM

October 4, 2011 002
The usual + 1 cup coffee & soy milk

Snack — 9:30 AM

unpictured cashews & juicy orange

Lunch — 11:30 AM

Lunch was a good one today! I only wished there was more of it to go around.

October 11, 2011 001
My lunch consisted of:

  • 1 cup cooked quinoa
  • 1/2 cup chickpeas
  • roasted brussels sprouts
  • balsamic maple glaze

On the side, I had an apple and a Primal Strip (review to come — these are AWESOME!)

Snack — 3:30 PM

I believe the first words out of my mouth after school was “is it snack time yet?”.

September 27, 2011 003

Thank goodness for frozen Larabars! I ate a Chocolate Chip Cherry Torte on my way to the chiropractor’s after school today.

Dinner — 6:00 PM

I have quite the debacle every other Tuesday. I always go to the chiropractor at 4:40, and by the time I get out of there and get home, it’s usually already quarter to six — too late for me to start pulling out dishes and whipping up dinner. By that time, I am a tired mess! To remedy that today, I used a Groupon I bought a while ago to a local restaurant. I can’t really eat much there, but the Husband can, so I used it tonight. I got him a Chicken Caesar wrap, which made him a happy Husband, and I got myself an old standby — a salad and a baked potato.

October 11, 2011 003
Which was supplemented with some more chickpeas and maybe a piece of quinoa bread. After dinner treat included a few squares of Lindt A Touch of Sea Salt.

Snack — 8:15 PM

  • Pumpkin Protein muffin
  • Greek yogurt
  • cacao nibs
  • chopped apple
  • peanut butter spoon

Hopefully my hunger will subside for today — although I wouldn’t mind eating as much delicious food as I did yesterday!

Question: What do you find helps when you have those “i am so hungry!” days?

I used to HATE those “I’m so hungry” days but I embrace them now….obviously my body is trying to tell me something so who am I to deprive it! I try to fill up on nutrient dense foods on such days to avoid going tooo overboard. Ironically, I now worry on days where my appetite is non-existent!

haha I worry when I don’t have an appetite as well!

Sometimes a baked potato seriously just hits the spot! Especially with some parmesan cheese on top! So good!

Reply

cleaneatingchelsey October 12, 2011 at 6:22 am

a baked potato always hits the spot for me! I bought 2 last night because I had to use up the entire $20 on my Groupon - my lunch today is going to be the potato topped with spinach, chickpeas, hummus, and nutritional yeast!

When I’m a starvin’ marvin’, I usually eat a bigger lunch to tide me over. This stops me from the mindless snacking that could come before dinner (and after dinner for that matter). Although, sometimes, I just can’t resist that sea salt popcorn. ;-)

Katie @ Peace Love and Oats October 12, 2011 at 6:27 am

lol eating helps! I had the same thing happen to me yesterday. I had my normal breakfast and I was STARVING by the time I got to school. I had to get a smoothie or I would have been dying for my entire class before I could eat lunch.

cleaneatingchelsey October 12, 2011 at 6:29 am

haha - yes, eating would take care of that right?

I usually just like to eat really filling meals with higher fat and protein to settle the hunger beast. Snacking all day leaves me really unsatisfied I find.
Deeeelicious looking food :)

Oh I’m always hungry! I try to eat lots of fibre, which helps a bit. Sipping on tea after a meal helps me feel more satisfied.

I’m new to your blog- and noticed you eat breakfast REALLY early! Do you have to be at work super early? (I do, that’s why I’m wondering!)

And I love primal strips- especially the Thai Ginger Peanut (I think that’s what it’s called!)

cleaneatingchelsey October 12, 2011 at 11:53 am

I usually leave for work around 6:45. I eat in the middle of getting ready.

Reply

Katie October 12, 2011 at 7:16 am

I’m honestly still trying to figure this one out! It usually occurs with a hard workout the day before and I honestly don’t feel the hunger pains until the next day. My goal is to fuel up more the day before and hopefully bite that monster in the butt. Like other comments, I need to embrace it and just eat. ;) Happy Hump Day!

I think the only thing that really helps on those “i’m so hungry” days is just to eat more… haha! And there’s some combos that always fill me up, like toast with almond butter and bananas. i think if i just make sure i get a good mix protein, carb, + fat at each meal, i feel more satisfied!

Alyssa @ Life of bLyss October 12, 2011 at 9:20 am

actually, chewing gum after a meal helps me to stop from shoving everything around me into my face.

obviously, not for too long, but it does help.

I try to drink water more because sometimes I am actually just thirsty…BUT when I am seriously hungry, I just pick healthy snacks and eat away. Some days I am absolutely STARVING. Also- thanks to you, I now put apples in my oatmeal- best idea e.v.e.r.

My latest fave quick after work dinner: saute brussel sprouts in a few tablespoons of water while microwaving a sweet potato. Add Earth Balance, cinnamon and nutmeg to the potato. Yum!

On my ‘bottomless pit’ days, I find I eat a lot of almonds. I think they help… but only after I eat a whole jar of them :)

It’s so weird when I get days like that where I’m ravenous all day long. Love the simplicity yet yumminess of that quinoa lunch though; gotta try that some time!

Lauren October 12, 2011 at 12:05 pm

I don’t mind eating lots of good food either, but those days where you can’t get your hunger to shut up can be kind of annoying. Especially if you’re not prepared. I find eating something that really sticks to your ribs helps and sometimes you just need a really big filling snack. I haven’t had a baked potato in so long, but it sound really good right now!

Ashley @ My Food 'N' Fitness Diaries October 12, 2011 at 12:40 pm

I usually just go with it when I’m hungry all day. I don’t mind eating! :) I try to eat a lot of high protein/high fiber snacks and meals to stay satisfied better.

Reply

Brittany October 12, 2011 at 1:27 pm

I usually incorporate more protein into my meals! If I have more protein than carbs/grains, I tend to snack less. I also just eat smaller meals but more spread out so I am pretty much eating all day long haha

Jen@foodfamilyfitness October 12, 2011 at 3:08 pm

I was like that yesterday, the hunger beast could NOT be tamed!!! Thankfully, it’s tamed today :)

Cassie October 12, 2011 at 4:47 pm

Oh goodness! Most days, the hunger beast will stay away while I’m at work and rear it’s ugly head sometime after dinner…I find that if I eat something warm and gooey (uh, that sounds weird), it usually helps. Like they say, I guess stuff like oatmeal just sticks to your ribs.

Eating more food seems to do the trick when I’m in a munchy mood ;)

Usually when I feel like that it’s because I am tired or I’ve exercised a bit more and need more food. So I just eat! But if it’s from boredom, I allow myself to munch, but I try to be mindful. Sometimes I go overboard, but hey, I move forward the next day!

Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin October 12, 2011 at 5:47 pm

Your lunch combo looks so good! I love brussels sprouts + maple syrup together.

When I have a day of nonstop hunger, Greek yogurt always does the trick. All that protein fills me right up!

Reply

Rebecca October 12, 2011 at 8:55 pm

Ah hunger days. The only cure is to eat more. I’ve found that certain combos (or coffee) generally cures it, but somedays I just graze every hour. I swear I have the metabolism of a teenager sometimes.
