Let’s talk about this whole darkness at 4:30 in the afternoon thing for a moment here.
I know it happens every year, but it’s really starting to put a damper on this whole blog thing. I don’t know if you know it, but I work just like the rest of you out there.
Even if I could leave school every day right when the kids get out (read: I don’t), I only go straight home about 25% of the time after work. I have errands to run, doctor’s appointments to go to, dogs to bring to the park, etc. Which means when I walk through my door at night, it is night time. The sun is gone for twelve hours, and I have to find some sort of magical way to make my food look delicious so you’ll come back to play again tomorrow.
There’s two things I could do about this. The first thing is to plan freakishly ahead, make four recipes on Sunday, and photograph them all for your viewing pleasure. This kind of rocks because not only do I have all of my blog posts halfway done for the week, but I also have a fridge full of meals to eat throughout the course of the week. Less dishes and more time to relax? I’m all about that.
But let’s be honest — I don’t always have time for that, nor do I always have an idea of what I will want to eat four hours from now, let alone four days down the road.
The other solution is to buy some lighting props so I can continue business per usual throughout the dark and depressing winter months.
So what I did was went out and dropped $1000 on lighting equipment just so you would still be friends with me.
Aaaand, that’s a lie — I spent about $25.
Last week, I went out and bought the following:
- cheap 2 headed standing lamp
- daylight bulbs (5500k)
- 2 foam boards
- brackets
I was thinking about making a light box, but then I realized that I would probably cut myself if I tried to do that (no joke). I thought I’d like to keep all 10 of my fingers for parent teacher conferences this week. I kept the covers off of the lamp, but I kept the shades just in case I decide I like the lighting with them on better.

And I taped two brackets on the backside of one of the foam boards and am using the other one to place food props on.
Yes, it is on top of Charlie’s crate and next to our very packed guest room closet — we’re pretty high class around here.
It may not be perfect, but I think it’s getting the job done — at least better than I was getting before when shooting photos in the dark!

Let’s face it — nothing it as great as natural sunlight, but when you can’t get it, you’ve got to improvise somehow!
Question: How do you take good photos when dealing with lighting issues?

i’m dealing with the same issue and have a lightbox on my to-do list. i found a really good how-to, step by step and think i am going to take the plunge! ideally, though, i shoot a lot during the daylight hours… whenever possible.
Good luck!
Our house in general has horrible lighting, even with the sun! I turn on every light possible (and get yelled at ) then wonder around until I find lighting that works
Our house has bad lighting too - we are really close to another house, which makes sunlight peeking in kind of difficult!
My house has odd lighting, butt I’m very sure I could make my photo’s 200% better with a new fancy pants camera; rather than my 2 year old point & shoot.
Believe me, no matter what camera you have, lighting is always hard!!
I really don’t like how it is dark when I am driving to work, and it is already dark when I get out around 5PM. I miss the sun!! It also makes me feel so lazy!
Nice!! I am having the same issue with lighting but unfortunately I am no where as motivated as you to do something about it LOL!
I hear ya about this darkness thing….dislike! I bought a Lowel EGO light off of Amazon which works really great. It’s basically the same thing you’ve done, except it’s very small and I can prop it on the kitchen counter.
That’s a great idea!
Um, I don’t take good pictures haha. Hopefully I’ll get a new camera for Christmas and I can start working on that!
Nonsense! You can take beautiful pictures with a point and shoot!
I really think I can now, thanks to your post! Your pictures are beautiful! I never thought you could have that setup so cheaply! I definitely have a dog crate in the guestroom that I can put to good use.
Thanks, Evan!
I’ve yet to start trying to improve my photography - right now I’m just food focused.
Oh the lighting issue! I have problems with that too!
I will have to try to figure out something like you did!
Have a great night! xoxo <3
You too! I’m glad you got yourself motivated yesterday!
Sometimes I will make something really delicious on a weeknight and think “I should blog this!” Then end up being too busy to make it again over the weekend. I’d love to hear how this ends up working for you over the next two weeks. I may have to steal your idea
I’m glad I’m not the only one who goes through this!!
Nice! I have a similar set up but without the lights b/c thankfully I work from home and can use lunch time to get in my “blog homework.” I might go buy some lights though too because sometimes I need to do other things during lunch and can’t manage cooking and photographing within that hour.
If I worked from home, I would definitely take that advantage!!
A lightbox is a total waste IMO because it’s too small, you can’t get good perspective and depth of field; it’s limiting and it actually closes off what little natural light DOES exist. I have much better luck with the white boards like you made.
And I also love and cannot say enough good things about Lightroom. I have told you before…what you can do with all those white boards and lamps and all the equipment, you can do with 1 slide of a dial on your mouse in 1 nanosecond taking the exposure from awful to decent to great. Fix the tone and coloring and you’re set. It’s not perfect and the photos may not get into FG or TS…but sometimes they do
Nothing will ever replace the sun and natural light but editing trumps lamps for me. I’d rather play with my mouse than all that equipment…b/c like you, I have the lights, the boards, the boxes…and Lightroom
I know I know I know!!! I have to buy it. I’m thinking that might be one of my Christmas presents to myself!
I agree, I think the light box kind of “holds you back” in a sense because there’s only so much you can do!
You know we all read your blog for the CONTENT, not the photo quality…DUH!
Thanks!
It looks fantastic!! I made a photo box last year because of the same issues. Buuuut, since I’m home all day now - I don’t use it. So basically, I’m telling you to have babies and then quit your job so you can be home during the good light.
someday katie.. someday.
Chelsey - I love your idea! I had also bookmarked this easy tutorial: http://backtoherroots.com/2011/10/27/how-to-build-your-own-lightbox-for-cheap/ I don’t really photograph food, but hopefully, it might help someone.
Thanks for the link girlfriend!
Did I seriously just use the word girlfriend?
I am always so impressed when bloggers take the next step in their photography. I’m still using my lame old point n’ shoot; however, I did just see my Christmas present from Toly. Oh yes, it’s a SLR!!! Finally, I’ll be able to step up my blog game a little.
woohoo!!!
I have a daylight lamp on my floor next to my kitchen table. i built a light box last year and for a while it was being held together by tape and pencils, but that died. I should probably get some foam board…
ahaha!
You are a crafty little minx. <- don't ask
I wish I had the motivation to set something up like that. But alas, I'm even too lazy for that. Mainly because it would mean hauling two kids to the store. Blech.
Yeah, not to much. That’s why I did it before I have kids. You know, because foam boards are really durable and will last for years to come.
Minx? I’m down with that.
I love this! I’m totally impressed with the dedication of all you food bloggers. And, of course, amazed at all the delicious things you manage to whip up after a long day of work. Man. I’m lucky to heat up some rice and some veggies.
Believe me, sometimes that’s all I do too!!
Ummm, yeah, I don’t really take great photos when the lighting is bad. I know that I need to do something about that soon, though, so thanks for the motivation.
PS - You’re looking so stinking cute these days. You’re such a cute pregnant lady!
I say ” screw it, they’ll either like me for me- cruddy lighting and all- or not come back to hear what I have to say” hahahaha! Okay, not really but I just try to do my best with what I’ve got… Your picture turned out really good, Chelsey! Wishing you luck this week with parent teachers conference!
Thanks, Julie! And I like you no matter what!
Ugh- the dark weather is KILLING me this year too. We’re right on the time zone edge, and so it gets dark super early here- ie, it should be 5:30 when it’s only 4:30. Totally sucks…I’ll have to try some homemade photography remedies too.
Very clever! I have a couple of lamps I put around and try to get all fancy with the settings on my camera. My photos aren’t always beautiful, but I guess they could always be worse! I must buy some foam board!
Very clever! My husband and I were just talking about this very thing at dinner tonight.
Love this! I just started my blog and have been struggling with making my photos look somewhat appeasing to the eyes…great idea! Thanks for sharing
great way to improvise! And yes this darkness at 4:30 is depressing! I was skyping with my sister who’s in TX, and she couldn’t believe it was dark here already. Even though we’re on the same time zone it was still daylight by her :-/
That’s so weird!!!
Way to get creative! And to only have spent $25? That’s awesome.
I don’t think I’m handy enough to build a light box either, so I may be stealing this idea. The lighting in my apartment is horrible and, at this point, I’ve given up even attempting to get good photos. That definitely needs to change!
Tell me how it goes!
Lighting has been a problem for me as of late as well. I’ve been considering different options and this seems like a good quick fix. Thanks for sharing!
Although I think your pics still look fabulous, it’s a good thing you have a great sense of humour in your writing style to distract us
hahaha! Thanks!
Natural sunlight is the best! But when I need some light, whatever room I am in, every single light goes on!!! lol yes, let there be light!
Thanks for the ideas! My apartment has the worst yellow-tinged lighting ever and I’ve been trying to come up with a solution. I love that this is so cheap and easy.
My heart stopped when you said you spent $1000 bucks!
I need to fix my lighting situation, too. This dark at 5:00 is really cramping my style!
I built a lightbox and it totally wasn’t worth the effort. The tissue paper ripped, the duct tape got stuck where I didn’t want it and unstuck where I did. I could have gone a little classier with materials but it was too small and crowded anyway. I bought a $75 artificial lighting set and a tri-fold display board so I’m trying to work with that!
I blogged about this same issue a week or so ago and I have seen so many others blogging about it since - it’s just a universal sucky problem unless you’re a professional photographer with all the tools!
Your set-up looks great, and I’ve definitely seen that kind of set-up work well for other bloggers. It is my Plan B - my Plan A is that my boss, who IS a professional photographer (yay lucky me!) is lending me his lightbox to see if I like it and will actually use it and if it gives me the results I want. If it works I’ll go buy one - it was $35 or so from a local photography store. I’ll let you know!
