playing dress up

November 29, 2011

It always seems that whenever the Husband and I have somewhere fancy to go to like a wedding or a party, I am scrambling around at the last minute trying to figure out what to wear. I call my girlfriends to figure out if I can borrow one of their dresses. I look through my own closet with disgust because, of course, “I don’t have anything to wear”. I usually end up wearing the same old thing or something I am uncomfortable in because I didn’t plan ahead.

Recently, I had the opportunity to go to David’s Bridal to try and buy one of their Special Occasion dresses on for size. After searching through their website, I couldn’t even believe the amount of dresses they have for special occasions. Now, I did have my bridesmaids get their dresses from David’s Bridal, so I knew they had a lot of selection, but I never thought to get a dress from them for something to wear for another wedding/party.

I love dressing up, and don’t do it often enough — so getting to go try on pretty dresses was so much fun for me! When I went to the store, I was greeted by a friendly face and the consultant helping me made sure to answer any questions I had and to stop by every so often to make sure I was doing okay while I was trying on a few options.

Okay, did I say a few? Look at all the different styles they have!

November 22, 2011 006

Those are just some of the many styles they have available for me to try on. I grabbed a few in my dress size, and headed to the dressing room.

One thing I have found about special occasion/party dresses is they run a little small. I always wear a size or two larger in these dresses than other dresses I have ever bought. No big deal to me — as long as it fits!

After much careful consideration, I found a dress! The Slim Charmeuse Print Dress with Ruched Waist to be exact.

This dress reminds me of a printed version of the dress my bridesmaids wore for my wedding — I love the style!

And the best part?

Pockets!

I can’t wait to wear my dress to our next party or wedding this upcoming season. Despite the cold weather, this dress will still look really cute with a sweater or shrug as well. And I may or may not sneak some snacks in with my pockets. You would too.

Question: Do you buy a new dress for every event you go to or do you try to wear things multiple times?

I wrote this review while participating in a campaign by Mom Central Consulting on behalf of David’s Bridal and received a gift certificate to facilitate my review.

I have a dress that is LITERALLY the same dress but with a differently patterned fabric. I freaking love it. You can’t even see when there’s something in the pockets!

I know - that’s the best part!!

My friend recently bought her rehearsal dress for her wedding from David’s and that’s when I found out they had non-wedding dresses. I had no idea! It was really cute too, I was kind of in shock because I would’ve never thought to go there to shop. I fall into the same trap every time I have an event to go to. I think my husband is sick of me saying how I have nothing to wear!

Oh geez, that is a constant battle here as well! :)

I always wear the same thing over and over… Which is awkward because everything I own is too big on me, but I don’t have any money to buy anything new! I have a wedding in March though with people I haven’t seen since college, so I’m definitely getting something new for that, gotta look good!

I would get something new too!

That dress is so stinking cute! I bet you look stunning in that! I just love every part of it! I would be finding places to wear that to: fancy dinner, church …Come on, wear that to school ;)
It depends on how big the event is- if it is super important to me, I’ll get a new dress; simply because I want to feel pretty and confident. I love the way I feel when I’m confident in what I’m wearing!

I think I might break out the heels and wear it to school today ;)

So cute! I love the design and pattern on that dress! And who doesn’t love pockets!

I used to live with 15 girls (yes 15!!) in college so there was never a shortage of outfits. Now, I only live with 2 and none of us are the same size which means I am constantly scrambvling. Why is it that no matter the occassion, you always feel like you don’t have the right thing? How many freakin occassions could there be! Btw, I just got back from Bloomingdales and bought a shirt for NYE. Oops.. ;)

I just cried a little bit when you said you lived with 15 girls. holy moly.

So cute! I just bought a little black strapless that I’m holding on to for the next fancy event. I feel like you can never have too many of these dresses. They always come in hand at some point.

I LOVE the dress..especially the pockets :) While I do love buying new dresses for special occasions, I do try to go back and re-wear them for a few events.

Do you buy a new dress for every event you go to or do you try to wear things multiple times? = when i was in college or h.s. to a formal, I’d only wear the prom dress once :)

but as an older person, I wear dresses to weddings or events as many times as I can get away with!

i love dresses with pockets!!

i try to re-wear dresses, and also have 2 sisters who are pretty much the same size as me, so that helps.

Reply

cleaneatingchelsey November 30, 2011 at 5:56 am

That does help! My sister is 4 inches shorter than me, so it never works out well.

preeettty sure I’ve never been more jealous. I’m pretty bad with buying a new dress for almost every (big) occasion these days. in my defense, I DID used to re-wear my dresses all the time. ;)

How awesome! I legit have one dress that I bought on sale for an event my sophomore year of college that I keep rewearing. I think if New Year’s calls for a dress I may buy a new one!

pockets are so splendid!
i will definitely recycle a fashion piece but only AFTER checking the guest list and ensuring that my dress won’t be a repeat to anyone. x

Reply

cleaneatingchelsey November 30, 2011 at 5:56 am

haha - I do that too which makes me feel so self absorbed. I mean, do people reaaally remember what I wore? Probably not.

nicole marie November 30, 2011 at 6:26 am

precisely! but if fashion is your passion (like it is mine), then it’s more than okay. i certainly won’t judge you. ;)

I got my prom dress there, my wedding dress, and a bridesmaid dress there before. I really think they have a great store!!! The last bridesmaid dress I bought there was from last fall and it was a beautiful plum color…and it had pockets, too! LOVE!

Reply

cleaneatingchelsey November 30, 2011 at 5:57 am

haha! You started a trend there - I wanted my wedding color to be a purple/plum color but the Husband wasn’t having it. So we did pink instead? Weird.

CUTE dress! I tend to recycle my dresses but if it’s a big occasion, I will buy a dress specifically for it…it also depends how the bank account is looking :)

Love that dress! That style is one of my favourites - it’s so flattering!

I try to wear a dress I already have for special occasions because I have a handful of dresses in my closet that I haven’t even worn yet! :P

I love party dresses and tend to buy them even when I don’t need them. So, I have a closet full and never need to go out and search for one when a special even rolls around.

Amber K November 30, 2011 at 1:08 pm

I own exactly two dresses and they are both black and white. One knee-length and one floor-length. I wear them for absolutely everything. Although neither have pockets, that’s definitely what I’ll be looking for if I buy another dress.

I pick up things on sale if I know there’s an event coming up. I am pretty good at buying great pieces for $20. Seriously, I shop like it’s my job.

We just went to a wedding this weekend, and I went through the last minute scramble. Borrowed a dress from a friend the day before and tried it on the day of, and it was too big. So, I had to go to the mall (on black Friday) to find something. Horrible. Definitely need to plan ahead of time!!
