in the box… week 4

December 2, 2011

Oh fresh vegetables from my CSA box, I have missed you.

Last week we did not get any produce because of Thanksgiving, and I discovered how much I really look forward to finding out what we are going to be receiving to eat.

What’s in the box this week?

Kale and Kohlrabi…

Kabocha Squash and Golden Beets…

Apples and Celeriac…

I know I’m weird for getting excited about produce, but this is the best freaking box in the world. For real. The best.

I had this kale in the box two weeks ago and the bunch was huge and lasted forever.

Kabocha is my favorite squash — sweet like butternut but super smooth.

Golden beets are basically the best.

And celeriac means I can make my roasted celeriac and carrot soup again. And going back to find that post for the recipe just went to show me that I guess this fall’s weather wasn’t as whacky as I thought it was. Apparently it was 65 on November 22nd last year?

You can find me in my kitchen until next Thursday.

I would be excited about the celeriac too. I love making soup with it too. Or making sort of like a mock mashed potato!

I’ll have to try creaming it to be like a mashed potato - I’m sure that would be delicious!

That is one rocking CSA box! Your boxes are always the best, full of delicious things. I would be excited too, I’m sure my husband would truly start to wonder about me if he saw how excited I would get from a CSA box, especially since he already wonders about me ;)

i have no idea what kohlrabi is, but i love kale. if i douse it in enough olive oil and salt and bake it into chips, i’ve found even the hubby will eat it (i mean he’ll still complain like you’re forcing him to eat lead, but it’s progress…)

Kohlrabi has the consistency of broccoli stalks when cooked and kind of tastes like it too - they’re good!

I’d be excited about that too! I haven’t has that squash before, but I need to try it due to my obsession with butternut.

Even weirder than you getting excited about what’s in your CSA box? ME getting excited about what’s in your CSA box! Ha. I just love seeing how people use their veggies and produce. And heck, I wish everyone was a bit more excited about vegetables. :P

This box is full of awesomeness! I’m so jealous of the celeriac. I recently had it for the first time at a restaurant, and I was hooked after one bite! But I’ve been having trouble finding it in grocery stores here. :P I’ve never tried kohlrabi though so I’m excited to see how you use it!

cleaneatingchelsey December 3, 2011 at 6:08 am

Did you have it creamed?

Celeriac….hmmm…

Reply

cleaneatingchelsey December 3, 2011 at 6:08 am

It tastes like celery but has the consistency of a root vegetable. I swear it’s good. YOu just have to peel away the ugliness.

Alison December 2, 2011 at 7:52 am

That looks delicious! Question… for those of us less educated on the less popular fruits and veggies, does your CSA box come with a list of what is included so you can tell what everything is? I would have looked at the celeriac and had no clue what it was!

She emails us every week letting us know what’s in the box!

Kate December 2, 2011 at 8:45 am

Are you able to get these things all winter? Or is your CSA box seasonal and end soon?

Reply

cleaneatingchelsey December 3, 2011 at 6:09 am

We get the box through December!

Kinley @ Better Off Barefoot December 2, 2011 at 9:05 am

Wow, I never realized celeriac looked so extraterrestrial… and have you ever tried kale chips? When I make those I could eat a whole huge bunch of kale by myself, in one sitting… oops :)

Reply

cleaneatingchelsey December 3, 2011 at 6:09 am

I love kale chips - and yes, I eat the entire batch too!!

I need more vegetable variety in my life apparently!

Is your CSA year-round? I am still enjoying greens from my garden and I think I just convinced my husband to build me a cold frame for better winter veg growing.

Reply

cleaneatingchelsey December 3, 2011 at 6:10 am

They have a summer, fall, and winter box - we usually just get the winter one. It lasts through December.

Kabocha is good. Love squashes or bust! Most don’t even know the kinds of squashes out there, so it’s nice to know someone who does like you!

Hi Chelsey,

I really enjoy reading your blog and am loving trying new recipes. Your veggie delivery looks amazing!

I just had to laugh about your comment on the kale….”I had this kale in the box two weeks ago and the bunch was huge and lasted forever.”

Reminded me of Justin Timberlake’s SNL performance of “d*#%-in-a-box” and I almost peed my pants. I guess it must be Friday afternoon!

I still need to try kabocha! And kohlrabi. It’s so pretty, I saw it at the farmer’s market over the summer but I’ve yet to try it.

Reply

Marty December 2, 2011 at 4:06 pm

I’ve been reading so many kabocha squash recipes, yet have never tried it! I just made a butternut sash soup last night. Maybe I’ll try that variety of squash next.

Reply

cleaneatingchelsey December 3, 2011 at 6:11 am

It is THE best squash ever.

Emily December 2, 2011 at 8:07 pm

What a delicious looking box of goodies!
I get so excited about produce too. Every week I leave my Farmer’s Market with the biggest smile on my face. There’s just something about fresh fruits and veggies that makes me giddy. People must think I’m so weird. Oh well. :)
