- it’s only six more days until Christmas – SIX!
- This morning I tried out a new morning workout routine this morning starting at 5:00 instead of 4:30 – more to come.
- I love weeks where I feel prepared going into them. Yesterday, soup was made and marinara sauce was prepared for meals this upcoming week.
- Feeling sick pretty much blows. For the first half of the day yesterday, I did nothing but sit on my couch and cuddle with Charlie watching reruns of Teen Mom 2.
- Speaking of Teen Mom 2, those girls have got to get their lives together. Although, when you think about it – I am not one of those people who thinks that show glamorizes teen parenthood. It makes it look horrible.
- Speaking of being sick, did you know I was sick one year ago today? For real. I woke up on my first day of winter break last year and had a fever. How that worked itself is beyond me, but having a blog to look back on such things is pretty fun.
- Saying the word “wok” is fun. Only because it sounds like “walk” but it’s “wok”.
- I promised you a stir fry recipe the other day (and by the other day I mean like five days ago) and have yet to deliver. Lo siento.
- How this post is somehow related to this stir fry recipe is beyond me. I’m blaming it on my illness. ::cough::
Asian Barbecue Stir Fry
Serves: 2
Difficulty: Easy
- 2 cups prepared short grain brown rice (I cooked mine ahead of time and left it in the fridge overnight)
- 1/2 block tofu, pressed
- 1/2 head green cabbage, chopped
- 1 green pepper, sliced thinly
- 3 carrots, sliced thinly
- 1/2 white onion, diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tbsp. olive oil
- 1/4 cup & 1 tbsp. barbecue sauce, divided
- 1/4 cup & 1 tbsp. Bragg’s Liquid Aminos, divided (or any gluten free soy sauce will do)
- 1 & 1/2 tbsp. potato starch (or another starch to be used as a thickener)
- 1 tsp. garlic powder, divided
- pepper and crushed red pepper to taste
Instructions:
1. To begin, slice your 1/2 of tofu into 6 pieces. Place the tofu slices on a paper towel and cover with a kitchen towel. Set something heavy on top of your tofu (I use a stack of cook books) and press for 30 minutes. If you’re lucky, you have a tofu press and you can use that instead.
2. Once the liquid is pressed out of the tofu, cut each slice of tofu into six pieces. You should have 36 pieces of tofu. In a small bowl, mix 2 tbsp. barbecue sauce (I use Bone Suckin’), 2 tbsp. Bragg’s, and 1/4 tsp. garlic powder. Add pepper and crushed red pepper to taste. Mix to coat and make a single layer on a baking sheet. Bake at 425 degrees Fahrenheit for 30 minutes, flipping halfway.
3. While your tofu is baking, chop your cabbage into bite sized pieces and also slice your onion, carrots, and green pepper. Using a garlic press, mince your garlic as well.
4. In a wok (or large sauté pan), heat 1 tbsp. olive oil and add your vegetables. Stir frequently to avoid scorching. After about 5 minutes, add the remaining 3 tbsp. barbecue sauce and 3 tbsp. Bragg’s. Lower the heat and cover. Stir occasionally for another 10 minutes or so. Approximately 5 minutes before serving, add your potato starch and stir to coat. This will act as a thickener for your sauce. Before serving, add your pepper, garlic powder, and crushed red pepper to season.
5. Once your tofu has finished cooking, toss with vegetables and serve with brown rice.
- Do not salt Asian food. Ever. After salting his food (he salts everything before tasting it!), the Husband exclaimed how salty this was. Yes, soy sauce is salty.
- Enjoy your Monday. Now that’s a demand.
Question: Tell me something fun you did this weekend! (To add to the randomness of it all)

I’ll have to do a taste test myself but as for presentation, I would give you an A+! Looks like a restaurant meal!!
OMG that looks so good!!! I hope you’re feeling better. I can’t stand watching Teen Mom, I can only watch reality shows of people I’m slightly jealous of (Kardashians!). I am so excited for Christmas! Have fun with the last week of school!
New reader here! I’ve been following you on Twitter for a while and couldn’t help but to scurry on over at the sight of “Asian” and “barbecue” in the same sentence.
Needless to say, I was not let down- this looks spectacular! And I love that most of your meals are GF because I’m wheat free (allergies) myself.
So what I’m TRYING to say is- I’m glad I stumbled on your blog this morning
i christmas shopped… which was actually pretty awful because the mall made me want to jump off a 10 story building (seriously, i’m pretty sure the whole midwest population was there), but it was productive nonetheless
I love stir frys! Best quick and delicious dinner..feel better:)
I love a good stir fry! Sounds and LOOKS delicious!
My husband did the same thing a while back - salted the food after he added soy sauce, not realizing soy sauce is salty. It was almost inedible. Live and learn. haha
Being sick blows, especially so close to Christmas. We are passing the cold through our house right now and it is my turn. Feel better! Recipe looks great as always.
the Teen Moms show…I know..it’s unreal. And I feel so helpless for them, the babies..heartbreaking.
But let’s talk stirfry…makes me excited!
Hope you feel better!
Ha! Ya… don’t salt Asian food is right!
Such a beautiful presentation. I never know how to photograph rice/veggie dishes. Something I did this weekend was build and decorate graham cracker houses with my kids and husband. One of our many holiday traditions. Hope you feel better soon.
I too enjoy saying “wok” - it’s a fun one. I had friends over for wine & lasagna Friday. It was fun, and I enjoyed that everyone else enjoyed my cookin’!
Haha, that sounds like my dad. He automatically salts everything and then if it’s too salty, he blames whoever cooked it! Unreal.
oh man, this stirfry looks so good!! when you posted a photo of it the other day, i knew the recipe would be amazing. can’t wait to try it out!
I hope you feel better! I did lots of fun things! Okay, anything is more fun than studying. Watched biggest loser, decorated a gingerbread house, watched the Chiefs beat the Packers, and went on a run with my dad!
Your body knows when break is near and it decides to …..break!
I do that alllll the time! My body just gets 100% worn down and decides to quit while I’m at home and can actually accomplish something! Take care!!!
If I didn’t have 3 kids, watching Teen Mom would make me want to rip out my uterus and feed it to a hungry wolf. I watch that show because I can’t turn it off and I hope and pray they get it and get their lives together one day! If I was 17 and watched this show, I would not need birth control, because i would be locking myself in my room forever.
Now that stir fry, sweet mother of all chinese food, it looks incredible!! I think I have everything to make it too, bonus
Fun thing this weekend? Spent way too much on Christmas presents!!
This looks awesome! I’m trying an Asian inspired meal for the first time this week… hope it at least looks as good as your stir fry
Hahah you got me on the “wok” one. I’m sorry you are sick! I haven’t been feeling to great lately either. I think once the seasons change, people get sick easier. Not sure if that’s true or not, but it seems like it! This looks sooooo good. I love stir fry!
The highlight of my weekend….definitely the massage!! Why don’t I get them more often?? Oh yeah, we’re poor. Why didn’t I marry a rich man?
does your hubby also ban meat? seriously, does he have and older brother?
he seems so obedient and healthy! the perfect of man mates! lovely recipe. thank you for it! x
Oh man, I love Teen Mom. When I go home for the weekend I plan on getting some solid watching in. I went to an engagement party this weekend…so crazy to think my friends are starting to get married!
Yay I love stir fries! I think I could be happy eating stir fry everyday for the rest of my life. My problem is I tend to stick to the same stir fry “recipe” all the time, even though there are so many different ingredients and sauces you can use!
I’m definitely going to switch things up and try this one. Any recs for BBQ sauce? I’ve never cooked with it before! I know, I’m weird.
Hope you feel better girl!
Yum! This looks really good. I love making stir-fry because it tastes even better heated up the next day.
I love a good ol’ Asian stirfry - I usually put cashews in with mine but have to try it with this marinaded tofu because it sounds delicious - love the idea of barbecue sauce!
But where’s the Kimchi?
Looks so good, Chelsey. I like your Asian styling.
Feel better soon! That’s an order.
that perfectly shaped rice stack makes me happy.
Yummy! This looks so good girl!
Beautiful pics. We are having stir fry tonight!
Haha, I’ve been watching Teen Mom 2 the past couple days because there hasn’t been anything else on. I’ve never seen it before. Some of those kids are so adorable they make me want kids and some of those moms make me want no one to have kids, lol. Feel better! Watch lots of trashy reality TV!
Can I just say that the way you plated this is gorgeous! The recipe sounds absolutely delicious, not to mention warm and comforting. Yum! Thank you for sharing.
Yum that dish sounds great! I hope you’re feeling better today! Being sick is no fun.
That looks delicious! Beautifully plated - mine generally just falls into a big heap!
Fun thing this weekend - end of school christmas party at our house for my daughters. Secret santa, disco competitions, makeovers, carols playing and 15 excited nine and eleven year olds. So much fun.
It drives me CRAZY when I cook and people (usually boys) salt it before even TASTING it! It’s like “No, actually, I seasoned this food because I know how to cook.” My boyfriend also just immediately puts Sriracha on everything, which is its own separate issue
