the case of the can lights

December 22, 2011

To those of you who don’t know, marriage is quite an interesting thing.

You love each other. You annoy each other. You cuddle together. You roll your eyes at each other. All of which can possibly occur within five seconds of each other.

Side note: Sometimes it freaks me out that the Husband and I look like we could be siblings. End side note.

There’s been something going on in my marriage lately that has been no secret among family and friends. And heck, you probably know about it too. You see, for quite some time, we’ve been in the dark.

Literally.

When we renovated our house last year, it was a lot of work. Not necessarily for me, but for the Husband and my father in law. I was an excellent delegator (aren’t I always?), but I didn’t necessarily get down and dirty with the men. Except for that one time…

Anyway (that’s for you, Mom!), when it came time for us to finish up the renovation process, we were running out of sweet time. We were on a time crunch, and when I finally moved in a week before the wedding, I could have cared less that I didn’t have a few necessary items, such as lights in the kitchen.

Yes, I know – young, naïve, and so in love that I didn’t care that I would be in the dark.

It was okay for a while – we had a light over the kitchen table, but other than that, our kitchen was quite dim. Then I started pulling out the “if I could only see” excuse when the Husband handed me back dishes that weren’t quite up to par in the “clean” department after dinner.

That’s when our first pair of can lights were installed.

I’m sure you remember this. If you don’t, I was NOT a happy camper. Seriously, go read that one.

Shortly after, I started to enlist the help of family members to comment on “how dark” our kitchen space was whenever they were over. Whether or not the Husband knows that is beyond me, but whatever the case is, he knows now. ;)

Monday I came home to find my house in disarray, two men in my attic, and holes in my ceiling. Many would be a little upset at that situation. However, I was leaping for joy (literally) through my hallway. After seven hours of hard work and crawling around in the attic for God knows how long, the Husband and my father in law successfully installed those lights.

(in case you are wondering, this is what it looks like when you lay on your dirty kitchen floor to take a picture of bright shining lights overlooking you as you cook.)

You have no idea how happy I am. I think I shed a tear.

And now I am completely disgusted as to how dirty my kitchen actually is.

Beeeautiful lights!! And don’t worry about a floor that’s a little dirty…people don’t normally lay on it :)

Oh I adore can lighting- looks great!

Ps- I’m a firm believer that we marry people that resemble ourselves and that people grow to look even more like each other over time. I think it’s true with David and me, and my friends that are married. Crazy!

You are funny. Same experience for me after I had lasic eye surgery. I thought I was retaining my youthful looks so well but the new reflection in the mirror said otherwise. Ha!

Congrats on the DIY project and for getting your lighting.

As a cook, photographer and the less sleep I get the more light I need on the situation…I can attest that yes, lighting is a beautiful thing!!

Just got married in September and my husband has been renovating the entire house (including the bathroom), so we haven’t moved in yet! The bathroom will be complete next week, so we’ll be moving in (finally!), but the kitchen hasn’t been started. All I’ll have to work with is a stove and microwave - not even countertops or cabinets! I just keep telling myself we’ll look back on it all and laugh some day - but I’m not looking forward to doing dishes in the laundry tub.

Yay for lights in your kitchen! At least it only took a few months. One day my dad decided to completely tear down my parents’ ensuite but he never touched it again after tearing it down. That was 12 years ago. Hahahaha!

You got your lights!!! :) Merry Christmas to Chelsley!
I am seriously so happy for you! (weird, I know) You have been wanting those soooo badly. What a sweet husband you’ve got there! -I’ll complain about me doing our entire housing make-over later.
PS- At least you have a VERY good shot that you’ll have blonde kids! I’m going to shed a tear if my kids are brunette like the husband’s side of the family.

That is so funny! I always tell my boyfriend when we buy a house, it will be a nice new house. There will be no old fixer uppers in the picture because if that were the case, there would be some serious eye-rolling and frustrations on my end! It’s not worth the drama :)
Props to you on having patience and yaaaa for it finally getting done!

Wow, you guys do look alike! People say the same thing about my husband and I though so I hear ya, it is freaky.
I employ the same tactics when I want my husband to get something done. Marriage is all about being manipulative. haha ;)

Lights make a large difference in a home, don’t they?!

I think marriage is something special to look forward too :|

Ah, yes. Can lights. I remember helping install those around our house. Let’s just say I don’t have the same appreciation for them as I was 9 months pregnant at the time and screaming at Peter to “get all these home projects the freak finished before i have this baby!!!”. Not my finest moments

I would be so happy! I couldn’t handle a dim kitchen. Living in my apartment with no windows near the kitchen is bad enough.

lol but on the bright side (pun intended) you may have a dirty kitchen, but you have light now!

yeah for your fabulous lights! i’ve lived in my apartment for seven years, only just discovering fabulous ‘hidden’ ceiling lights when i decided to clean all of the ‘switches’ in the kitchen. and WOA. that led to another 5 hours of cleaning! i feel your ‘omgoodness, my kitchen is so dirty’ pain! have fun cleaning . . . in the light. :) x

Yay can lights are the best!! My husband and I purchased a house that was built in 1948 back in May so I caompletely understand the trials that go along with renovation! I’m so glad you have lights that you love!

Kitchen lights are majorly important in my house. I hate our one giant fluorescent light and have to turn on a bunch of side lamps and under-the-counter ones. Literally so picky.
