major freezer intervention

December 29, 2011

I need a serious intervention. And I suppose the third to last day of 2011 is as good of time as ever to begin one. Can we talk about that for a second here? Three more days until 2011 is over? I just got used to writing 2011 last month. 2012 seems like it’s too far away, not three days away.

Anyway, about that intervention - I should probably ask for an intervention from Friday Night Lights, which I just started watching yesterday on Netflix after the show ending earlier this year. Five episodes down, 71 one more to go. I’m pretty sure I can make that happen by the time I go back to school on January 9, don’t you think?

What I really need an intervention from is my food stash in my freezer. I don’t know what happened, but it has gotten way too out of control in the past few months. The Husband has been asking me to clean it out or throw food away or do something because it’s bursting at the seams, which means it is all that more difficult for him to reach for a frozen cookie at night without thousands of baked goods and frozen leftovers falling out on top of him.

Exhibit A:

December 28, 2011 002

Exhibit B:

December 28, 2011 003

That’s bad right there. I’m pretty ashamed to even show you those pictures to tell you the truth. However, I thought it’s a good time to clean out the freezer. You know what they say — nothing like starting a new year with an empty freezer.

No? You’ve never heard that one before?

Whatever.

I’ve made it my mission to start using up all of my freezer stash in the next few weeks. So here’s what I’m working with… it’s kind of scary.

Some lonely frozen vegetables from the garden this year — diced tomatoes, whole tomatoes, sliced green peppers, salsa peppers, and half a bag of frozen broccoli.

December 28, 2011 004
My chocolate stash — three bars of dark chocolate and my pan of frozen fudge failure concoction that I promptly threw away after taking this picture. I never did figure out the whole fudge thing this holiday season.

December 28, 2011 005

My other frozen treat stash — Mint Chocolate Mocha No Bake Cookies, gluten free brownies, Chewy Chocolate Oatmeal Cookies, and some other cookies I received from the blogger cookie swap. Those all promptly went back into the freezer after being taste tested to make sure nothing had been freezer burnt. Don’t worry — they’re still good.

December 28, 2011 006

I also forgot about my bags of pesto cheese sauce and another bag full of pesto — I see a lot of pasta in my future!

December 28, 2011 007
I have two leftover soups — one of which is black bean butternut squash, and the other one I will have to let you know what it is when I eat it because I have absolutely no clue as to what it is. Here’s to hoping it’s a good one!

December 28, 2011 008

And then there was my bread stash — holy cow. So this is what I’m going to do. Whenever I bake something new, instead of putting it into the freezer to eat some later, I’m just going to give it away because apparently I have been housing enough for a football team.

December 28, 2011 009

I’ve got wraps for the husband, brown rice tortillas, two bags of Rudi’s, homemade sandwich bread, raw bagels, oatmeal scones, scuffins, cinnamon rolls from Christmas (I will personally be finishing those myself), and blueberry bagels. #ridiculous

Then there was this lone bag of Sweet Potato Fries that I never blogged about and/or ate. What a failure. In my defense, they got lost in the freezer.

December 28, 2011 011
I am so pumped to know I still have curry chickpea burgers in the freezer — some of them look a little freezer burned, but I’m sure they’ll be fine. And even if they’re not, I’ll eat them anyways.

December 28, 2011 012

Last but not least, a few Larabars that have only been hanging out in there for a few days. Larabar was kind enough to send me some of their newest flavor, Cappuccino. It has a great coffee taste and has whole almonds in the bar. It’s a definite keeper!

December 28, 2011 014
I ended up throwing some things out that were far from salvageable, but for the most part I now have a good idea of how I’m going to be using up some of these freezer items in the next few days.

December 28, 2011 015
Much better, don’t you think? Nah, now it’s just organized chaos. Does someone want to come over and help me eat bread? I”m going to keep the chocolate for myself.

Question: Have any ideas on how to creatively use this food?

Dinner tonight: blackbean butternut squash soup and use the sweet potato fries as dippers! Can I come over?

I actually just cleaned out my freezer last night too! Anything that I couldn’t remember what it was got tossed. It’s crazy how stuff gets so packed in there so quickly.

That was probably a good “rule” of thumb when going through your food!

haha your freezer is ridic. Ill come over and organize it for you. I have a compulsion for organizing fridges/freezers/pantrys.

I love your freezer stash.

“Question: Have any ideas on how to creatively use this food?” <— yes, stop buying more at the grocery store and force yourself to use what is in the freezer, PERIOD. For 2 weeks. And see how far you get. I bet pretty darn far and pretty darn creative.

and i can sympathize with the FNL issue. if you haven’t yet developed a major crush on matt saracen, just wait…

I can’t believe you fit all of that stuff in your freezer! We have a chest freezer and I don’t think we could fit all of that in there;-)

I would make soup and oven toasted bread-with chocolate for dessert.

Good luck using it up this week. Throwing food away kills me so I’d make it my mission too.

I have 3 freezers which helps eliminate this- 1 Fridge/Freezer in thr house, 1 Fridge/Freezer in garage and a big deep freeze in garage! I love making a bunch of food in my spare time and then being lazy and just reheating when I am extra busy and don’t have time to cook anything! I see lots of sandwiches and french toast in your future =)

Reply

cleaneatingchelsey December 30, 2011 at 8:40 am

I think 3 freezers would just make my problem worse! More room for food!

I’m in the SAME boat. In fact, I’m saving up money now so I can just get a bigger freezer haha. Yours still looks organized though! My freezer looks like a bomb went off. I think I’m addicted to making meals and freezing them. I have so many different casseroles in the freezer it’s not even funny.

Reply

cleaneatingchelsey December 30, 2011 at 8:42 am

Are you really? You’re too funny. When we bought our house, the old owner had a freezer in one of the closets in the bathroom (????) but the Husband gave it away because we wanted to put it in the garage, but we cut the power to the garage so we could pass our inspection. I want that freezer back!!!!

Our freezer is now full of meat from my husbands hunting expedition. I don’t eat it and would much prefer to have a freezer full of berries and beans but they say compromise is a good thing in a marriage ;) .
I need an intervention from Netflix also! I watch too much t.v. in the winter!

We buy bread on the sale rack at a local grocery…without checking what we’ve already bought and stuffed in the freezer. It gets intense. At least you have a fairly well-rounded busting at the seams freezer. Mine is seriously carb heavy! I love the idea of cleaning it out to start the new year! Except…I’d need to clean the fridge and pantry too!

Reply

cleaneatingchelsey December 30, 2011 at 8:45 am

I’m sure you can - It’s a thick dough, so you might need to hand mix it so it doesn’t destroy your whisk attachment.

Haha I love a packed freezer. And yes, I know I tweeted you about this already but I am always SO CHUFFED when someone discovers the wonder that is Friday Night Lights! I discovered it after its first run on TV as well, so I did what you’re doing and spent a holiday just watching them obsessively, one after the other. My favourite gossip blogger, LaineyGossip.com, had always raved about the show and I finally caved and watched and she was so right, it is unbelievably good. Did you know most of the lines are improved? They just give them an outline of a scene and they just improv it. That’s what I love so much - when they accidentally talk over one another etc - just like real life, but something you rarely see on TV. Love it! Okay, I’ll stop now. :)

Reply

Yep. Make a “grid” of categories (bread, veggies, baked goods, etc) then list anything you put in the freezer. Using a white board makes it easy to wipe off things that exit the freezer and you never forget what is hiding in the back!

Reply

eva @5FruitsNVeggies December 29, 2011 at 3:10 pm

a great way to use up leftover, frozen non-sweet bread, rolls, pitas or even tortillas is to defrost it all….then bake them in the oven on the lowest temp (thankfully i have a dehydrator mode on my new oven) and dry out the misc bread and then throw into food processor to make bread crumbs…..

i also do the same thing with odds and ends in the pantry, ie especially after a party when i am going to have a bunch of crackers that will go stale because i don’t have time to eat them….although with crackers i just throw into food processor….i think i used up some old rice cakes this way too….

Yeah, we’re not allowed to move for another year - we were lucky to get that housing credit a few years ago for first time home buyers, but you have to stay in the home from at least 3 years or else they want the money back!!
