I need a serious intervention. And I suppose the third to last day of 2011 is as good of time as ever to begin one. Can we talk about that for a second here? Three more days until 2011 is over? I just got used to writing 2011 last month. 2012 seems like it’s too far away, not three days away.
Anyway, about that intervention - I should probably ask for an intervention from Friday Night Lights, which I just started watching yesterday on Netflix after the show ending earlier this year. Five episodes down, 71 one more to go. I’m pretty sure I can make that happen by the time I go back to school on January 9, don’t you think?
What I really need an intervention from is my food stash in my freezer. I don’t know what happened, but it has gotten way too out of control in the past few months. The Husband has been asking me to clean it out or throw food away or do something because it’s bursting at the seams, which means it is all that more difficult for him to reach for a frozen cookie at night without thousands of baked goods and frozen leftovers falling out on top of him.
Exhibit A:
Exhibit B:
That’s bad right there. I’m pretty ashamed to even show you those pictures to tell you the truth. However, I thought it’s a good time to clean out the freezer. You know what they say — nothing like starting a new year with an empty freezer.
No? You’ve never heard that one before?
Whatever.
I’ve made it my mission to start using up all of my freezer stash in the next few weeks. So here’s what I’m working with… it’s kind of scary.
Some lonely frozen vegetables from the garden this year — diced tomatoes, whole tomatoes, sliced green peppers, salsa peppers, and half a bag of frozen broccoli.
My chocolate stash — three bars of dark chocolate and my pan of frozen fudge failure concoction that I promptly threw away after taking this picture. I never did figure out the whole fudge thing this holiday season.
My other frozen treat stash — Mint Chocolate Mocha No Bake Cookies, gluten free brownies, Chewy Chocolate Oatmeal Cookies, and some other cookies I received from the blogger cookie swap. Those all promptly went back into the freezer after being taste tested to make sure nothing had been freezer burnt. Don’t worry — they’re still good.
I also forgot about my bags of pesto cheese sauce and another bag full of pesto — I see a lot of pasta in my future!
I have two leftover soups — one of which is black bean butternut squash, and the other one I will have to let you know what it is when I eat it because I have absolutely no clue as to what it is. Here’s to hoping it’s a good one!
And then there was my bread stash — holy cow. So this is what I’m going to do. Whenever I bake something new, instead of putting it into the freezer to eat some later, I’m just going to give it away because apparently I have been housing enough for a football team.

I’ve got wraps for the husband, brown rice tortillas, two bags of Rudi’s, homemade sandwich bread, raw bagels, oatmeal scones, scuffins, cinnamon rolls from Christmas (I will personally be finishing those myself), and blueberry bagels. #ridiculous
Then there was this lone bag of Sweet Potato Fries that I never blogged about and/or ate. What a failure. In my defense, they got lost in the freezer.
I am so pumped to know I still have curry chickpea burgers in the freezer — some of them look a little freezer burned, but I’m sure they’ll be fine. And even if they’re not, I’ll eat them anyways.
Last but not least, a few Larabars that have only been hanging out in there for a few days. Larabar was kind enough to send me some of their newest flavor, Cappuccino. It has a great coffee taste and has whole almonds in the bar. It’s a definite keeper!
I ended up throwing some things out that were far from salvageable, but for the most part I now have a good idea of how I’m going to be using up some of these freezer items in the next few days.
Much better, don’t you think? Nah, now it’s just organized chaos. Does someone want to come over and help me eat bread? I”m going to keep the chocolate for myself.
Question: Have any ideas on how to creatively use this food?

Dinner tonight: blackbean butternut squash soup and use the sweet potato fries as dippers! Can I come over?
You sure can! Dinner is in an hour.
I actually just cleaned out my freezer last night too! Anything that I couldn’t remember what it was got tossed. It’s crazy how stuff gets so packed in there so quickly.
That was probably a good “rule” of thumb when going through your food!
haha your freezer is ridic. Ill come over and organize it for you. I have a compulsion for organizing fridges/freezers/pantrys.
I love your freezer stash.
“Question: Have any ideas on how to creatively use this food?” <— yes, stop buying more at the grocery store and force yourself to use what is in the freezer, PERIOD. For 2 weeks. And see how far you get. I bet pretty darn far and pretty darn creative.
You put out a hard bargain, but I think I can do it.
i am definitely in the same boat as you re: the freezer stash. it’s totally out of control.
and i can sympathize with the FNL issue. if you haven’t yet developed a major crush on matt saracen, just wait…
Ah, you have off until January 9?! Lucky!!!
PS - I realize that was not the point of this post.
bahaha!
I can’t believe you fit all of that stuff in your freezer! We have a chest freezer and I don’t think we could fit all of that in there;-)
I would make soup and oven toasted bread-with chocolate for dessert.
Ha ha, my freezer is the total opposite. It’s like a ghost town in there.
Let’s just say that I’m not shocked that even our freezers are the same. I think this proves, yet again, that we’re meant to be friends
Um, we are friends. Duh.
Frozen soups are my favorite thing to take to work for lunches- it means no packing a lunch that morning and I still get to eat something homemade and delicious!
Amen!
I would love to help out … my friends make fun of how I need my freezer and fridge organized … I actually do not like it to be TOO full … and I love opening them if things are in perfect order and aligned … I know crazy!
I’m usually that person!!!!
It’s the holidays, forget about the freezer and just enjoy Friday Night Lights! best.show.ever. I love Eric and Tammy Taylor.
lol i do the same thing in my freezer my family is like wat is this im like i thinkkk its this. everythings just so good i cant get rid any leftovers! and btw friday night lights is amazing! last yr i got all the seasons for xmas and i watched them all on the break and all the snow storms we had so alot of snowdays! its sucha good show
I’ll come over! I am a bread monster! HAha
Haha, I know this won’t make you feel any better but it definitely makes me feel better to see someone else who might possibly be more of a freezer hoarder than me!
I love that you have no idea what the soup is, haha! Good luck using it up this week. Throwing food away kills me so I’d make it my mission too.
I think when I go to Orlando, I’ll just leave the Husband instructions to eat through the freezer instead of leaving him anything to eat.
I have like nooothing in my freezer. I wish I could get creative right now, but I have nothing. Good luck with everything!
Consider yourself lucky!
I have 3 freezers which helps eliminate this- 1 Fridge/Freezer in thr house, 1 Fridge/Freezer in garage and a big deep freeze in garage! I love making a bunch of food in my spare time and then being lazy and just reheating when I am extra busy and don’t have time to cook anything! I see lots of sandwiches and french toast in your future =)
I think 3 freezers would just make my problem worse! More room for food!
I’m in the SAME boat. In fact, I’m saving up money now so I can just get a bigger freezer haha. Yours still looks organized though! My freezer looks like a bomb went off. I think I’m addicted to making meals and freezing them. I have so many different casseroles in the freezer it’s not even funny.
Are you really? You’re too funny. When we bought our house, the old owner had a freezer in one of the closets in the bathroom (????) but the Husband gave it away because we wanted to put it in the garage, but we cut the power to the garage so we could pass our inspection. I want that freezer back!!!!
Our freezer is now full of meat from my husbands hunting expedition. I don’t eat it and would much prefer to have a freezer full of berries and beans but they say compromise is a good thing in a marriage
.
I need an intervention from Netflix also! I watch too much t.v. in the winter!
Compromise? What’s that? Just joking - I totally agree!
Did you just say January 9th??!?!? I need to take a moment to feel sorry for myself…..
…..crying in the corner……… Okay, I’m done ……(I go back on the 3rd)
My freezer broke a couple of months ago so after that huge mess, my freezer is pretty bare! You really got a hold of some ambition- super work!
Yes, Jan 9! Yahoo!
So I don’t have your same freezer problem but it is nice to hear that someone else is addicted to a TV show on netflix… Brothers & Sisters is my life right now. I need some serious help.
Well at least you don’t have to go grocery shopping for a while
Hmmm…make up menu for the next few days to use it all up? I’m no good at that kind of stuff haha. My freezer always gets crazy packed too….partly because I forget about things
oops!
My freezer needs a good cleaning too. Maybe I’ll get to that this weekend. Just maybe.
Good luck!
We buy bread on the sale rack at a local grocery…without checking what we’ve already bought and stuffed in the freezer. It gets intense. At least you have a fairly well-rounded busting at the seams freezer. Mine is seriously carb heavy! I love the idea of cleaning it out to start the new year! Except…I’d need to clean the fridge and pantry too!
I would do that too!
There is no need for an intervention from FNL. It is that good. I just love that show, and am so sad that it is over!
OMG they have cappuccino larabars??? If you’re really pressed for room in your freezer I would be pleased to do you the favor of taking those space-taker-uppers for you.
The flavor is new!
When I saw the pictures it didn’t look like too much, but once you pulled it all out, that’s a lot! Haha I didn’t realize people even froze a lot of those things! I guess that’s what happens when you have to make so many new recipes instead of eating leftovers! And definitely keep the cookies!
Come over and hellllp!
My freezer is in serious need of cleaning out or else I just need to buy another one! I freeze everything for fear of it being wasted (you also just reminded me I need to try make your bagels….question…can I make them if I don’t have dough hook in the food processor?!?)
I’m sure you can - It’s a thick dough, so you might need to hand mix it so it doesn’t destroy your whisk attachment.
I found the dough hook! They’re currently in the hot press…I’m hoping and praying they turn out, I really want a bagel like right now!
I am terrible about using up my freezer food so I won’t be much help. Good luck eating up your stash!
I hope you’re using up some of your freezer food now with that new baby - he’s beautiful!
I’m the same way, I freeze everything. I try to plan for at least one freezer cleanout week a month where I’ll focus on eating foods that I’ve saved. That way I don’t forget about all of the stuff I’ve stashed in there
your freezer is so cute! now that i know you’re only 24, it’s even cuter!
x
or old lady’ish - I’ll go with that one!
Love that show, and it only gets better! And Riggins. Oh, Riggins.
I’m super impressed by your freezer skills, even if they ended up getting a little out of control!
Haha I love a packed freezer. And yes, I know I tweeted you about this already but I am always SO CHUFFED when someone discovers the wonder that is Friday Night Lights! I discovered it after its first run on TV as well, so I did what you’re doing and spent a holiday just watching them obsessively, one after the other. My favourite gossip blogger, LaineyGossip.com, had always raved about the show and I finally caved and watched and she was so right, it is unbelievably good. Did you know most of the lines are improved? They just give them an outline of a scene and they just improv it. That’s what I love so much - when they accidentally talk over one another etc - just like real life, but something you rarely see on TV. Love it! Okay, I’ll stop now.
i LOOOOVE that!! I idn’t know that little bit of information about FNL!
Wow, I can’t believe you can even fit all of that stuff in there. I get anxious whenever my freezer is more than half full. I hate having to dig in it to find what I want. Then again, you’ve got plenty to snack on for quite awhile.
I do this in the Fall. I work through the freezer and pantry and try and make most of my meals from that stuff. It feels nice!
Productive!
Friday Night Lights. Enough said. I mean…I KNOW, right? So good.
And I don’t even like football.
Glad you found it.
You should watch Breaking Bad next…another AMAzing Series. Maybe during Summer Break..lol.
During summer break, I never watch TV! I think I’m only watching now because it’s cold outside!
I need to do this. BAD.
I think I have some edamame in mine (the steamfresh kind) from back in summer.
lol.
Oooo send it my way!
i REALLY need to do this. thanks for the motivation. you know, i didn’t love the new laras. bummer.
That is a bummer! I love the taste of coffee, so I’m approving them.
Get on that freezer, stat!
Guuuurl, get a magna white board on that freezer, STAT!
for what? To tell me what’s in there?
Yep. Make a “grid” of categories (bread, veggies, baked goods, etc) then list anything you put in the freezer. Using a white board makes it easy to wipe off things that exit the freezer and you never forget what is hiding in the back!
a great way to use up leftover, frozen non-sweet bread, rolls, pitas or even tortillas is to defrost it all….then bake them in the oven on the lowest temp (thankfully i have a dehydrator mode on my new oven) and dry out the misc bread and then throw into food processor to make bread crumbs…..
i also do the same thing with odds and ends in the pantry, ie especially after a party when i am going to have a bunch of crackers that will go stale because i don’t have time to eat them….although with crackers i just throw into food processor….i think i used up some old rice cakes this way too….
Great tip, thanks!
I’m actually REALLY impressed by all of the amazing stuff you have in your freezer. I need to do the exact same thing. It’s always feels so nice to completely clean everything out and start fresh. Plus, it makes meals VERY easy and delicious for a few weeks.
Agreed!
You totally inspired me to clean out my freezer today! I made plans for all the food in my freezer and fridge in recipes for the next week (instead of going out to buy the things I already have hiding in the freezer!) Thanks for the inspiration to get off my couch
I’m so jealous of your chocolate and cinnamon buns. the only things we have in our freezer are old bagels and our produce scraps!
That is sad.
Lol! Awesome! I have been looking at my closet and my coffee cup collection with the same thoughts. Something HAS to go!
I think every time I stop at Starbucks I pick up a new coffee cup. I think I need help actually.
I am notorious for cooking something, putting the leftovers in the freezer and forgetting about it. FOREVER.
I love coffee mugs. They’re my favorite!! But I agree with the clothes too - I go through my closet every few months, but some things I just can’t get myself to get rid of!
oh this sounds like a good fun project which i am sure you will CONQUER! Post all the recipes please because I need them as well.

Happy DEFROSTING!
Best thing that worked for me regarding food organizing: Moving!!
I made it a mission to move with close to no food items .. and that meant eating EVERYTHING from the freezer (can’t move that) and nearly all my pantry stuff. And it feels really good to start again from scratch!
Yeah, we’re not allowed to move for another year - we were lucky to get that housing credit a few years ago for first time home buyers, but you have to stay in the home from at least 3 years or else they want the money back!!
I definitely need a freezer intervention myself. I will admit mine is much worse than yours. Oops.
