woah baby!

January 10, 2012

Tucked away in a Mexican food cafeteria styled restaurant in Downtown Disney is the place where I could die happy.

January 6, 2012 035

I recently discovered that BabyCakes NYC had opened a location in Disney, and I more than anxiously awaited the days where I would be reunited with my favorite gluten free and vegan baked goods that took my breath away when I visited Gabriela this summer.

My mom, who is also gluten free, was almost more eager than myself to get the show on the road and make a trip to the bakery.

January 6, 2012 041

Finally, after two long and grueling days walking the streets of Disney World, we arrived. Dramatic much?

Let me tell you something — when you’re gluten free, I feel like you adopt a whole new sense of appreciation for extremely tasty baked goods. Baked goods that are moist, actually taste like the real thing, and melt in your mouth.

January 6, 2012 040

Since my mom had never had BabyCakes before, we decided we were going to partake in the 6 for $18 deal that was good for their cupcakes and doughnuts. After much deliberation, I chose a red velvet cupcake, a lemon cupcake, and a chocolate crumb doughnut.

January 6, 2012 038

My mom chose a red velvet cupcake, a carrot cupcake (remember when I ate one in NYC?), and a chocolate crumb doughnut as well.

January 6, 2012 037

While all were delectable and delicious, I have to say I liked the baked goods in NYC better. Perhaps it was because we went after dinner so they weren’t quite as fresh, but the cupcakes in NYC were much more moist. Don’t get me wrong, these were still delicious, but nothing quite like the cupcake I had in New York.

However, this bakery totally redeemed themselves when I went back the night before we left to pick up some goodies to bring home with us.

Instead of getting cupcakes (which was a good idea since my mom’s were destroyed by the time we got home), I went for something a little bit different — coconut mounds and cake bites.

january 9, 2012 007

I’m still trying to get over just how delicious the coconut mound is. Honestly, they are quite possibly the best coconut filled treat I have ever eaten in my life. They remind me much of a mounds bar, but richer and the coconut filling has sea salt in it. My absolute favorite chocolate bar has sea salt in it, so adding coconut only heightens its awesomeness.

The cake bites also rocked my world — they were chocolate chip cake balls dipped in chocolate and vanilla frosting. Oh. My. Gosh.

january 9, 2012 008

I more than once professed my love to the bakery girls, and I offered to work in the Chicago store if they ever were to open one. Thankfully my mom is heading back to Disney for work next months which means she’s bringing back some goodies (hint hint, Mom).

Question: If you could only eat one dessert for the rest of your life, what would it be?

These look yumm and I’m not even a big cupcake fan! As much as I love cheesecake, I know too much will make me feel sick! Chocolate chip cookies or plain ol vanilla ice cream, on the other hand, are a different story. No amount will ever make me turn my back on them :)

I’m totally with you on the new found appreciation for baked goods; now that I have to at the very least seek wheat free and ideally gluten and dairy free I feel it is my duty to taste test whatever is available; which in Ireland isn’t a whole lot to be honest!

Those cakes look amazing..how on earth do you choose one is the problem!

Congratulations on your half marathon!
Every time I travel to California (from Australia mind you so this is really an event) I promise myself that I will find my way to babycakes or some other gorgeous gluten free bakery. In the two months I spent in California last year I didn’t even manage one cupcake! I am a source of shame for the cupcake loving community, but next time I find myself in LA I know exactly where I am going to redeem myself!

I have Babycakes on my list of places to go next time I visit New York City. I keep debating buying the cookbook too. I would have to go with ice cream as my only dessert.

I’m not sure why I’m not that into cupcakes, but I guess it’s sort of a blessing in disguise. I’m not sure if I could just pick one dessert. I’d limit it to fruit cobblers. Peach is good, but blueberry or blackberry are my favorites. (Southern girl here!)

Oooo I love cobblers too!

Just one? Oh man, that’s hard! I tried one of the best gluten-free cupcakes a couple of months ago and it was so amazing. Since I hadn’t had a cupcake in about a year, it was like eating manna! Okay, again, overdramatic, but it was good.

One dessert for the rest of my life would have to be ice cream though. But what flavor? gluten-free cookie dough, gluten-free cookies and cream? something with a caramel swirl and chocolate covered nuts? Okay, I’m done know.
