Tucked away in a Mexican food cafeteria styled restaurant in Downtown Disney is the place where I could die happy.
I recently discovered that BabyCakes NYC had opened a location in Disney, and I more than anxiously awaited the days where I would be reunited with my favorite gluten free and vegan baked goods that took my breath away when I visited Gabriela this summer.
My mom, who is also gluten free, was almost more eager than myself to get the show on the road and make a trip to the bakery.
Finally, after two long and grueling days walking the streets of Disney World, we arrived. Dramatic much?
Let me tell you something — when you’re gluten free, I feel like you adopt a whole new sense of appreciation for extremely tasty baked goods. Baked goods that are moist, actually taste like the real thing, and melt in your mouth.
Since my mom had never had BabyCakes before, we decided we were going to partake in the 6 for $18 deal that was good for their cupcakes and doughnuts. After much deliberation, I chose a red velvet cupcake, a lemon cupcake, and a chocolate crumb doughnut.
My mom chose a red velvet cupcake, a carrot cupcake (remember when I ate one in NYC?), and a chocolate crumb doughnut as well.
While all were delectable and delicious, I have to say I liked the baked goods in NYC better. Perhaps it was because we went after dinner so they weren’t quite as fresh, but the cupcakes in NYC were much more moist. Don’t get me wrong, these were still delicious, but nothing quite like the cupcake I had in New York.
However, this bakery totally redeemed themselves when I went back the night before we left to pick up some goodies to bring home with us.
Instead of getting cupcakes (which was a good idea since my mom’s were destroyed by the time we got home), I went for something a little bit different — coconut mounds and cake bites.
I’m still trying to get over just how delicious the coconut mound is. Honestly, they are quite possibly the best coconut filled treat I have ever eaten in my life. They remind me much of a mounds bar, but richer and the coconut filling has sea salt in it. My absolute favorite chocolate bar has sea salt in it, so adding coconut only heightens its awesomeness.
The cake bites also rocked my world — they were chocolate chip cake balls dipped in chocolate and vanilla frosting. Oh. My. Gosh.
I more than once professed my love to the bakery girls, and I offered to work in the Chicago store if they ever were to open one. Thankfully my mom is heading back to Disney for work next months which means she’s bringing back some goodies (hint hint, Mom).
Question: If you could only eat one dessert for the rest of your life, what would it be?

These look yumm and I’m not even a big cupcake fan! As much as I love cheesecake, I know too much will make me feel sick! Chocolate chip cookies or plain ol vanilla ice cream, on the other hand, are a different story. No amount will ever make me turn my back on them
gosh I love ice cream - I could eat an entire gallon of coconut milk ice cream!
I have got to go to babycakes next time I am in NYC!!! Everyone always raves about it and the baked goods do look amazing!
They are absolutely amazing, there’s no denying it!
*drool* all of those cupcakes and baked goods look sooooo yummy! So glad ya’ll were able to enjoy them!! I’ll have to checkout Babycakes in NYC sometime, (more reason to get hubby to take me to NYC!!
hehe )
I’m totally with you on the new found appreciation for baked goods; now that I have to at the very least seek wheat free and ideally gluten and dairy free I feel it is my duty to taste test whatever is available; which in Ireland isn’t a whole lot to be honest!
Those cakes look amazing..how on earth do you choose one is the problem!
You don’t - you get them all!
Fantastic idea! u deserve it after the race!
I’d eat hummingbird cake, with a side of benadryl since I’m allergic to…um most of the major ingredients.
it’s soooooo good though!
I got a cupcake from that Babycakes when I was in Disney this summer!
One dessert for EVER? Hm… peanut butter cups!!!
I do love peanut butter cups!
Mmm, Almond Joys / Mounds are one of my favorite candies! I wish I could buy a jar of just the coconut filling!
Congratulations on your half marathon!
Every time I travel to California (from Australia mind you so this is really an event) I promise myself that I will find my way to babycakes or some other gorgeous gluten free bakery. In the two months I spent in California last year I didn’t even manage one cupcake! I am a source of shame for the cupcake loving community, but next time I find myself in LA I know exactly where I am going to redeem myself!
Yup! THey have a store in LA!
I have Babycakes on my list of places to go next time I visit New York City. I keep debating buying the cookbook too. I would have to go with ice cream as my only dessert.
I always think things taste better when others make them!
how pretty! I know they were amazing! I would eat chocolate cream pie or sweet potato pie for the rest of my life
These look amazing! You said they were located in Downtown Disney? Where exactly. I just moved away from Florida in April and I am going for a visit next Friday for 9 days. I’ll need to check this out.
Right past the Lego store in the little Mexican cafeteria!
Awesome!! I will make a stop there thanks!
I received both of the Babycakes cookbooks for Christmas. The Mounds bars on my list of things to make. Well, actually the whole book is on my list…
those cake bites look DIVINE! On all the blogs I’ve read that have visited a babycakes, none have ever shown me THAT beauty!
I had never seen one before either - they are heavenly.
I’m not sure why I’m not that into cupcakes, but I guess it’s sort of a blessing in disguise. I’m not sure if I could just pick one dessert. I’d limit it to fruit cobblers. Peach is good, but blueberry or blackberry are my favorites. (Southern girl here!)
Oooo I love cobblers too!
If I was limited to one dessert I’d probably choose really high quality dark chocolate - nothing quite as satisfying!
Cheescake, please! I don’t care which variety - pumpkin, chocolate, cherry, strawberry…just pass me the cheesecake!
ahhhhh, I’ve been wanting to try Babycakes for… okay 3 months. Now that’s dramatic. Looks so good though! If I could only have one dessert for the rest of my life it would be cake with OBSCENE amounts of frosting.
I wish I would have known - I could have brought you home something and stuck it in the freezer!
Strawberry shortcake. Hands down.
All of your desserts look awesome, but that cake ball is making my mouth water!
I am sooo glad you told me about this, I need to check this bakery out!!! I think I like ice cream/froyo the best and/or chocolate.
I can’t believe for all the times I’ve been to NY I haven’t been to Baby Cakes. Need to make a special trip just for that.
I think it’s necessary.
Ice cream! I think it is the perfect food.
Everything looks delicious!
I think I should train for a half just to go to Disney and eat one or three of those cupcakes- kidding but maybe I should just go to Disney or NYC and eat a few of those goodies!
I have no idea what I would choose. This question is not nice, Chelsey….Maybe-chocolate & wedding cake layer cake?
Oh delicious.
i’m not gluten intolerant, but those goodies sure do look and sound amazing!! i could never work in a bakery… i’d be in so much trouble. if i could eat one dessert for the rest of my life… oh man, that’s a tough question! i LOVE so many desserts! probably a fudge brownie, freshly baked chocolate chip cookie, or peanut butter chocolate dough balls would be my top choices. obviously i’m a chocolate lover…
ha! I agree - I could never work in a bakery!!
My favorite candy bar is Mounds/Almond Joy, so that coconut bar is the key to my heart
Have you ever had her cinnamon rolls? zomg. perfection.
I haven’t! They looked amazing though!
Those look really good! I haven’t had Babycakes cupcakes ever, and I live right outside of NYC….horrible, I know. I’ve only ever had Magnolia. But - I think I should add it to my list the next time I’m in the city!
Should NOT have read this at work before lunch - now all I want is a plethora of fresh baked goods. YUM.
In your opinion, what’s the best GF bakery in Chicago?
Ice cream! Even though I have a slight lactose-issue, ice cream is by far my favorite dessert.
And that coconut mounds looks and sounds delicious!
I do love ice cream - and I remember the exact last time I ate it too. My stomach hurt alll night!
I think it would have to be white chocolate chip macadamia nut cookies. I need to find a clean recipe for them!
Are you putting me up to a challenge?
Absolutely!!
Definitely Ice Cream, although those cupcakes look fantastic
Thank you for reminding me that I need to go to Downtown Disney to check this place out! I’ve been wanting to go for months but always forget since I don’t usually find myself out that way.
Drooollll…..
I’m braindead beyond that…
I live in NYC and I’ve only been to Babycakes once, like 1.5 years ago. It’s funny because I actually had a craving yesterday and was twitter stalking their daily flavors. Must get down there soon!
I love cupcakes, but if I could only eat one dessert mine would have to be ice cream.
my mom’s homemade carrot cake, no question, hands down. but i would silently suffer if that meant no more ice cream…
I so want to try Babycakes! I think I heard that they also offer some baked goods up that have been cooked with natural sweeteners…they are my dream bakery! I was going to ask who made your wedding cake — did you have someone make a gluten-free version?
omg, the last picture is to die for! i just set my reservations for my 30th birthday (new york), and this little bakery will be the creator of my birthday cupcake goods! i thank YOU dearly!
xxx
Just one? Oh man, that’s hard! I tried one of the best gluten-free cupcakes a couple of months ago and it was so amazing. Since I hadn’t had a cupcake in about a year, it was like eating manna! Okay, again, overdramatic, but it was good.
One dessert for the rest of my life would have to be ice cream though. But what flavor? gluten-free cookie dough, gluten-free cookies and cream? something with a caramel swirl and chocolate covered nuts? Okay, I’m done know.
Wow those cake balls look awesome! I certainly would be happy with my mom’s peanut butter chocolate chip cookies for the rest of my life. I’m in love with cookies!
Oh my goodness my favourite dessert ever would have to be Tiramisu. If someone knows how to Veganise it I would be their friend for life!
I absolutely LOVE Babycakes. I try to always hit their location in NYC whenever I am there. It is always worth going out of the way for. One dessert for the rest of my life? I’d have to choose a very very high quality dark chocolate with some type of salty treat added on top - pistachios, almonds, sea salt. YUM!
Ooooo wow….I’ve been dying to try Babycakes for EVER!!!! I’m heading to Miami tomorrow {first time} and have no idea how friggin far away disney is, but I feel I need to go! LOL
xxoo
Glad the bakery redeemed itself! I always feel obligated to indulge if I find vegan baked goods somewhere. I can make them myself, of course, but there’s just something about the novelty of buying them! I truly love raw desserts, but this city has surely never seen one of those!
Chelsey,
Thank you so much for visiting our bakery, and for posting this review! We are glad to see how much you enjoyed the Coconut Mounds and the Cake Bite. We look forward to seeing you again soon! xoxoxo
Love,
BabyCakes NYC
I got babycakes cookbook for Christmas and can’t wait to cook from it! I think I would eat a vanilla cupcake everyday for the rest of my life!
Hummingbird cake, AMAZing! Thanks for the running clothes. Don’t have a Kohl’s but they are on sale so ordered a few shirts and pants! You rock
What a spread…I would and could go pretty ga-ga in there
Glad they redeemed themselves. Nothing worse than having a lackluster dessert experience. Makes you just feel so…meh. Dessert should be va-va-voom!
“If you could only eat one dessert for the rest of your life, what would it be?” = probably brownies but this is like choosing a favorite child. You just can’t.
haha! I wouldn’t think that you would be able to choose!
Not sure if this qualifies as dessert…but I could eat cinnamon rolls for pretty much every meal for all of eternity.
Those desserts look amazing. I’m not a huge fan of cupcakes, but boy, do those look good. And that chocolate mound coconut thing? I might as well curl up on my couch and eat about five or six of those little babies!
Holy cow that cake bite looks amazing!
One dessert?? They are super rich, but I LOVE oreo truffles. Cream cheese and oreo’s dipped in white chocolate…..who knew!!
Oh that sounds delicious!!
Yum! The cake balls look so freaking good. If I could eat one dessert for the rest of my life, it would probably be red velvet cupcakes from a bakery called Designer Desserts. They are delicious!
I feel like I would trade my soul for one of those.
Oh man, I found out I was gluten intolerant about a month ago and definitely miss the occasional baked good. I absolutely love brownies, and the gluten free ones I’ve experimented with just haven’t cut it so far! There is suppose to be a reall good gluten free baker here in town that I need to check out. I hope you have a great rest of your trip with your mom!
Where do you live?
Dallas, Texas!
I would have to have frozen yogurt! I just love it… summer and winter, it doesn’t matter!
Oh, how I adore Babycakes. I was finally able to visit the bakery when I was in NYC a few weeks ago. As a gluten-free girl, I was ecstatic to FINALLY find cupcakes and cookies that were both GF and out-of-this-world delicious. So glad you were able to visit the store at Disney! The coconut mound sounds pretty incredible!
Oh my goodness, isn’t Babycakes amazing?
Thank goodness there’s one in LA. Although, I guess that’s also pretty dangerous.
I’ve never tried the mound bars- they sound delicious! I know what I’ll be getting next time. (:
Totally drooling! Those goodies sound delish. Are all their items GF and vegan?
It looks like the best dessert ever too. I really want to go to BabyCakes at some point, I’ve heard nothing but good things about them.
Home made vegan reeses!
