One thing I wanted to talk about last week was how awesome it was to have food restrictions and eat in Disney World. However, I figured you all had enough of the Disney talk for one week, so I thought I would save it for this Wednesday.
Dining in Disney was without a doubt one of the best experiences I have ever had with having dietary restrictions. If you remember, back when I went to a Gluten Free Expo last April, I actually had the honor a former Disney chef who was one of the people responsible for starting allergen free dining in Disney many years ago. And boy oh boy, have they perfected this for their visitors throughout the past few years.
Breakfasts
On the first day when we traveled, my mom and I both made sure to bring along something to eat for breakfast. Neither one of us could stomach a breakfast down at 3:30 in the morning, which is the time we left her house to go to the airport. And I have learned the hard way when traveling not to bring overnight oats (although I know others have gotten away with it before). I toasted two pieces of Rudi’s cinnamon raisin toast, smeared some peanut butter on both of the pieces, and topped it with chia seeds and banana slices. Add a venti Starbuck’s to the mix and you’ve got a happy Chelsey!
While we were in Disney, we stayed at Saratoga Springs where all of the rooms are equipped with full sized kitchens. My mom and I took it upon ourselves to bring food to make for breakfast, so every morning was easy (and cheap!). My mom brought the peanut butter, I brought the oats and the chia seeds (although I didn’t understand I was bringing the oats for both of us, so we had to improvise a few days), and we had bananas and almond milk delivered to us from Garden Grocer. It was just like eating breakfast at home!
Lunches
We only ate lunch at one of the “faster food” places in the parks one of the days. However, it was one of the most painless and seamless experiences ever. On the day my mom and I were in Magic Kingdom, it was already 2:00 in the afternoon when we finally could peel ourselves away from the rides to get some lunch. And at that point, we were STARVING!

We made our way over into Tomorrowland where there is a huge food court. One of the sections had sandwiches and salads, so that is where we ended up. When we got up to the front of the line, we told the cashier we were gluten free and immediately she got on her intercom and a manager type person came over with a special order slip so he could bring it to their “allergy kitchen” for the chefs to work on. I had no doubt in my mind that they took allergies with great care, so my entire experience was very worry free.
My mom and I ordered two meals to share, and everything was beyond exceptional! We ordered a Greek salad with the cheese and dressing on the side.

We also ordered a grilled vegetable sandwich, which was served on an Ener-G hot dog bun and served with gluten free French fries (heck yeah!). Typically, French fries are gluten free, but undergo cross contamination when put in the fryers. They had an allergy fryer, which meant I was able to enjoy some of them! Believe you me, I was very French fried out by the end of the week.

On our first day when we were at Universal Studios, we found a Moe’s Southwest Grill right outside the park, so we made a point of stopping and filling up on some rice bowls before we went into the park. It certainly is not Chipotle, but it did the trick!
Restaurants surrounding the Parks
We hit up a lot of restaurants throughout the week while we were in Disney — all of them more than accommodating for us!
On the night before my half marathon, I wrote about how Wolfgang Puck Cafe was awesome at making sure I was able to eat my meal. You can read more about that here. I’m still salivating over this sushi! From now on, sushi is my pre-race meal. It worked out fabulously!

On our first night in Florida, my mom and I were at Universal Studios (which I know isn’t a part of Disney), and they had so many gluten free options — we both ended up ordering a grilled vegetable sandwich on an awesome gluten free bun served with gluten free fries (see what I mean about being all “French fried out”?).

On the days that we didn’t go out for dinner, my mom and I made some quick and easy meals at our hotel room before heading back out to a different park once the sun went down. Using Garden Grocer was an awesome experience — we had fresh produce and potatoes to roast, which made for one of my favorite dinners of all time (a salad and baked potato — although I can’t do this too often, I need more protein and fats!). We also brought other snacks, such as raisins and almonds, granola, and food bars to keep the hunger beast from making its appearance.
Desserts
Do I even have to remind you about how much I love BabyCakes? Probably not.
Regardless of where we ate in Disney, there was always an option for the two of us to eat, which makes me feel so comforted knowing I don’t have to plan ahead or live off of carrot sticks when I travel to any Disney location. It was by far the best dining experience I could have asked for while on vacation!
Question: Do you ever have a difficult time dining on vacations because of your lifestyle?

Okay, truth….one of my favorite reasons of going away is the food! It’s amazing how new places of the world has so much to offer with their cuisine. Everything looks delicious and bonus that you had so much G-Free options!
Okay that’s always my reason!
That’s so great you were able to find options without going out of your way! Even though I have no intolerance as such, I don’t like to throw complete caution to the wind on holidays. It’s always pleasant to find restaurants which have healthy options beyond a garden salad!
Agreed! I never want to “throw everythign out the window” with healthy eating while I’m gone!
That is awesome that you had so many options! Looks like you had a great trip!!
have you heard of the website healthy disney? it’s run by Lisa of Lisa’s Foods! I think you should submit this post (or a similiar one!) to be run there, too! SO MUCH good, helpful info for Disney visitors!!!
I have! I’ll have to email it to her - thanks for the shot out to her with the link to this!
I’m SO impressed you got by with delicious food options at Disney! theme parks are SO tough when it comes to nutritious options, so I usually bring food in case
You should have seen how stocked up my camera bag was!
I love how accommodating Disney is!!! That is so awesome! Just another reason why its the happiest place on earth!
America is so much better for restaurants and providing options for people with different needs…mention gluten or wheat free and your usually limited to one option here in Ireland, throw in vegetarian and vegan and you’re having a bowl of vegetables!
Ugh, that stinks! Hopefully they’ll get on board soon!
Or else I’ll just have to move my ass over to America or Canada!
delish eats! They all look so good!
wow! i am very impressed with all of disney’s options. i have not been there in years… looks like they’ve really updated things! i’m going to guess gluten free buns were not an option last time i visited, circa 1993
i also don’t know if there’s such a thing as being french-fried out!
ha! The first time I went was in 1993, perhaps we crossed paths then as well?
So far, I had the most difficulties finding vegetarian meals at a small Croatian island, where all the restaurant menus were full of fish. I basically ate tomato soup with rice and a greek salad almost every day. But most of them were delicious, so I didn’t mind. Finding a decent, healthy breakfast was even harder, that’s why we usually rent appartments with a full kitchen.
I have found having a full kitchen is key for me on vacations! It makes my life much easier!
i just want to let you know, that I love your WIAW posts. Your breakfasts always look delicious.
I typically just go with the flow on vacation. I know that when I get home I’ll be back on track. It makes life less stressful and the people around me don’t think Im a total nut.
My 3 year old is severely allergic to tree nuts so we gave huge issues. It’s hard to trust some stranger when they say her food is nut free since she won’t just get a belly ache, it will be anaphylaxis and the er. But I have heard great things about Disney which is great because every little girl needs to go to Disney world when they are little!
I agree! I would be a nervous wreck with a severe nut allergy with kids. I have a few in my class and had a few last year as well - I have to keep an Epi pen in my desk!
That’s awesome that they had so many options for you! When I went to Colorado springs with my mom over break we went to one of our family’s favorite restaurants, The Golden Bee, which is Sykes after an old English pub in the Broadmoor hotel. I knew going in there that I literally couldn’t eat a thing on the menu but I was too stubborn and wanted to make it happens. Turns out they offered their sandwhiches on gluten free bread! I couldnt stop grinning I was so happy
woohooo!!!
That is SO awesome that they made so many accommodations for you! I’ll have to remember that the next time I go to Disney.
I bet you felt so much more comfortable when you saw how much care they were putting into your food. It would truly put me at ease and help me relax and enjoy the food! I want a cupcake and it’s not even 8:00 yet! Yikes!
Cupcakes at 8:00 = a-okay in my book!
I love Disney! I felt like when we went there with Henry, they were SO VERY accomodating to nursing women and families! There were spots where I could nurse and they also made a point the make it very hassle free. As natural as nursing is, most places make you feel like it’s an inconvenience.
I can only imagine!
I can honestly say Disney surpassed by already high expectations for allergen handling there! It was so nice to travel without any worries or really any restrictions! I can’t wait to go back!
PS, if you ever go back, we stayed at Port Orleans and the cafe there could make gluten free Mickey Mouse shaped mini waffles. They were adorable! And I am guessing most of the hotels can make them too?
That’s really cute - I think all of the hotels can do it. We never ate breakfast at the cafe, but I heard about it!
Disney is awesome for being so accommodating!!! My husband and I are big cruisers and typically take 2-3 /yr. Royal Caribbean is the only liner we use and they go above and beyond to ensure my allergy needs are covered. Even though I am a guest among 2000+ the entire staff checks on me constantly in all dining rooms/buffets.
I’ll have to keep that in mind - thanks!
Gluten free being “trendy” right now has its ups and downs. On the down side you often get many eye rolls “oh you are one of them” on the up side there are so many more options for food now! I see it as glass half full!
I see it that way too!
Being a pescetarian and typically vacationing in beach towns, I’m usually set with options.
All of those meals look so good! Sometimes its hard to dine out if you’re in a big group with a lot of different taste buds! You usually get stuck at a place that has not such healthy choices. But, usually you can look through a menu and make the best choice for yourself!
I love Disney so much, and this just makes me beam with pride that Disney is so awesome. So glad you got to enjoy your food and didn’t have to worry about contamination!
chelsey, i’m a foodie, an odd exbulimic one, but a foodie nonetheless, as you know.
and despite being fully engaged and excited about your article, when i read your words of “tomorrowland,” i stopped and scrolled directly to the comment section!
OH MY GOODNESS. tomorrowland! such a fabulous memory for me. and since it’s always about me (wink wink), i want to share the details.
the year? 1985. my age? 3.
first disney experience. and this was my absolute “favourite” ride. something then told me that i’d love science, progress, and business forever. my dad videotaped the segment, and i find it astounding to observe of how the “carousel” has changed over the last almost 30 years. it melts my heart and excites it, at the same time. i hope that you experienced it. did you?
xxx
I love that ride!!!
I’ve heard that Disney is absolutely amazing when it comes to dietary preferences, restrictions, etc and they not only try to be very accommodating, they actually are and fully understand the issues about cross-contamination, trace issues, etc…glad you guys had such a good experience and the other restaurants in the area, too, were great!
I love when restaurants take the extra step to ensure your meal is actually gluten free… although not enough do this!
Gluten Free Red Velvet Cupcakes? Score!!!
Wow, I had no idea that Disney World is so allergy friendly. Good for them!!! That’s awesome that you were able to enjoy so many good eats without many restrictions.
My nut allergies definitely are a pain in the butt when it comes to vacations. Especially at resorts with buffets - those are a nightmare for me!
This blows my mind! I love that Disney has jumped on the G-Free train. It seems like there were a lot of veggie items, too! Yay!
I just moved back to the Midwest from Cali, and realize how spoiled I was on the West Coast as a vegetarian. I struggle to find mainstream restaurants that have veggie options without me having to ask for a million substitutions.
All the more reason to love Disney! Thanks for the post!
You were spoiled being in Cali! I only wish we had some of those restaurants here!
This is so good to know! I had no idea Disney was that accomodating.
I struggled so much in Spain. Every meal was like meat with a side of cheese, and though I like that stuff in moderation I cannot physically tolerate that type of food every day for every meal. I actually stopped eating breakfast there because all I could find were sugary pastries and I was having a rough time digesting everything else.
That’s so awesome that they were so good about allergen-free cooking - LOVE that they have an ‘allergy-free’ kitchen. In a way, because I avoid gluten for health reasons rather than because I’m actually allergic to it, I sometimes wonder if I would even notice if a restaurant ‘cheated’, because I don’t get allergic reactions. So sometimes I wonder if they really are doing ‘gluten free’, but I guess with Disney there are no worries!
I love the idea of ordering a salad and fries. THat’s my kind of healthy living balance
I have so many random food intolerances that it can become a huge pain to make sure I’m not going to be in pain the next day. It can be stressful, because I hate making a huge fuss. But I sort of have to if I want to ever go out!
I have managed to get away with bringing overnight oats on the plane. I realized just as I was putting my bag into the scanner that it may be an issue and then hoped on my life that they would not confiscate them. It was overnight oats in a jar-that’s a once in a month occurrence!!
Disney sounds like a haven for anyone with dietary restrictions!! My only restriction is self-imposed (I’m a vegetarian and don’t really eat dairy either) but for the most part, I’m able to find something while on vacation.
I really like this post! I often hear people asking “Well, what CAN you eat?” if you’re discussing a gluten free diet (or a vegetarian or vegan diet) especially when it comes to going out. You’re proof that things can still get delicious.
great post! and yes we find it difficult to dine out but we try not to be those girls, but hey we want to eat and be full and happy too haha
though by us eating fish and eggs again it has helped eating out a little.
just one of the many reasons I am obsessed with Disney. Amazing, food. Glad you had a good experience!
I love how accommodating they are when it comes to food
I LOVE red velvet cupcakes!
I LOVE Disney World! I can’t wait to go back!
Being vegan, and not a fan of bread, its always really difficult to find things besides a side salad i can eat. Disney looks like it wouldnt be an issue!
