taking food advice

February 9, 2012

I am continuing to be astounded by the emails and comments that are still being sent and left on my last post about deciding to try acupuncture for fertility related issues. As I am sure you can understand, I was definitely nervous about pressing the “publish” button on a post that left me looking vulnerable, emotional, and somewhat broken. With that being said, however, I am glad I did share what I am going through. Someone mentioned writing it out might prove to be therapeutic — and I have found it to be just that. After hearing all of the stories and reading all of the encouraging support from everyone, I felt like a huge weight had been lifted off of my shoulders. Thank you!

Even more amazing than that were the positive stories I have heard from women who underwent acupuncture treatments when dealing with the same issues I am. I was rejoicing from hearing about all the women who were having trouble getting pregnant and went to acupuncture as a “last resort” and ended up getting pregnant after a few months of treatment. While that’s not necessarily the case for everyone, I am glad to have some support to back up my decision to try acupuncture.

On yesterday’s WIAW post, a few questions came about — specifically about my decision to cut out peanut butter and coffee. Truth be told, when I went in for my first acupuncture treatment, my doctor gave me a few pieces of advice on foods that I should be eating/avoiding to better my chances of treatment working. While it is what it is (advice), that doesn’t mean I won’t try anything to throw a few more balls in my court. I’m a “it doesn’t hurt to try” kind of person — so, that’s what I’m going to be doing — trying!

1. Avoid Coffee - ::sigh:: The worst possible thing a person could ever ask me to do. I have heard a lot of research about cutting out coffee when undergoing any sort of fertility treatment. I suppose there are a few reasons for this. Caffeine, of course being one, but chemicals in coffee is another. My doctor has recommended me not drinking coffee anymore — and when he told me this, I made a scrunched up face that would scare most away. He then told me 1-2 cups per week of organic coffee would be okay — but it needs to be organic. That way, the chemicals that are in standard coffee won’t be a problem.

Just ask the husband on this one when I tell you that I am not very smart and tried to do this all in one swoop. On Sunday, I just didn’t drink my usual venti coffee (or the equivalent to it at home) — YIKES! By the time we got out of church, I told him my brain felt like it was about to explode, and that I felt like I was going to get the shakes (exaggeration of course). He suggested I not try to do the “all or nothing” mentality (like I usually do) and to cut it out slowly. I think he suggested this for his own safety, but I figured it would be best. This week I have been only drinking a tall coffee (or 12 oz.), and next week I will cut it down to 6 oz. The week after that, I’ll probably do a cup every other day, and then cut it out completely. Of course, I am human — so I will need that 1-2 cups per week thankyouverymuch.

I did find a great article about why coffee impacts fertility — it’s pretty informative!

2. Avoid Peanuts - ::double sigh:: Doesn’t this guy know that he is asking me to take the most beloved thing I eat out of my life? I know that peanuts are not the most nutritious of all nuts around. Peanuts actually have a high content of aflotoxins, which may impair fertility. There are many others out there that boast a higher quality of nutrients, which is why he has asked me to replace peanut butter with almond butter instead. Sounds easy, but it’s quite depressing for this girl. I’m encouraged to eat a wide variety of nuts and seeds though — I’ll be continuing to do that!

Aaand I keep telling myself that it won’t be “forever” — I’ll see you again someday peanut butter!

PS — One of the reasons why I don’t enjoy almond butter as much is because it’s too “drippy” for me — I really dislike drippy nut butters! Anybody have any luck with a non-drippy almond butter? Buuut I don’t like it too thick either. A happy medium would be nice.

3. Eat a wide variety of berries — Blueberries, raspberries, blackberries — it’s a good thing I love them all! Berries are high in antioxidants. Blueberries in particular are high in anthocyanins, which can reduce overall inflammation in your body.

I found another great article about berries and fertility here.

4. Eat avocados — Avocados were actually named the “Fertility Fruit” by the Aztecs many many years ago. They are high in healthy fats, and I already eat them every day. Again, no problem here!

5. Avoid Milk & Cheese — Done and done! Since my body hates milk and cheese to begin with, I didn’t have an issue here. I did, however, ask my doctor if yogurt was something I should avoid since he didn’t write it down. He approved plain organic Greek yogurt in moderation. I just have to get through my last stash of Chobani, and then I will be following this rule as well!

6. Eat Eggs with Omega 3 — Since I would not compromise on the eating meat and being a vegetarian, he did advise me to continue to eat organic, free range eggs that also had Omega 3’s in them. Happy to comply!

Along with these dietary changes, he also suggested I read two books that discuss acupuncture and fertility. One of the books is The Infertility Cure and the other is Making Babies. I’ve heard of both of these books before, and they are in transit to my local Barnes and Noble book store for me to purchase!

Like I said before, all of this was “suggested” and not required by me. Even more than that, I am not advocating that if you eat these specific foods or don’t eat specific foods that your problems will be solved. I’m giving it a go, seeing what works for me, and going from there. Every person is different and requires a specific plan designed for them.

My next acupuncture treatment is tomorrow (edit: THIS) evening, and I can’t wait!

Good luck Chelsey! It sounds like you are doing everything right, and I am sure it is frustrating to go through all of this, but hopefully all of your hard work will pay off soon!

And I’m so glad it’s been a relief to talk about on the blog - we all have issues we are dealing with and insecurities/vulnerabilities. But now you have your own personal cheering section!

Chelsea,
I did acupuncture too and got pregnant on my first round of IVF! I think it helped me find a calmness going into the process.

As far as the peanut butter, I stopped eating it last year (my kids were already three) during the Clean cleanse. I really liked the Trader Joe’s almond butter with flax more than any others I tried. Somehow it seemed the closest to p.b. for me. I’ve gone back to peanut butter though, since I just like it more.

Wish you great luck!

kidS? As in plural? :)

Thanks for the suggestion on the almond butter - I love their PB with flax, so I’m guessing their AB with flax would be good as well!

Good luck at your appointment tonight!
As far as almond butter goes, I’ve found that the freshly ground one from my market isn’t too drippy-maybe the same is true “at a store near you” (haha)
Also, if you make it yourself, you can control the drippiness. Just don’t process it as long for a thicker almond butter.
You could also just keep your regular almond butter in the fridge and that may do the trick but I’m not sure…

christina February 9, 2012 at 7:32 pm

another vote for grinding it yourself! mine is always less “drippy” that the ones i buy. but i don’t mind drippy, it’s all yummy to me!

Great approach, Chelsey! It’s so important to go in with an open mind yet still stand your ground to some extent (as you did with the refusal to eat meat). Chances are that you’ll get plenty of unwarranted advice along the way but as I’m sure you will, stick to whatever you hear from the professionals. Like you said, there’s no guarantee any of this will work but at the same time, it doesn’t hurt to try. hope it works out in your favor!

I have found that grinding my own almond butter at Whole Foods is the best way to go with almond butter. It keeps some crunch and after a day or 2 the oils start to come out so then it’s not too dense. It’s on the expensive side, but worth it!
Have you seen Forks over Knives? Pam Popper is a nutritionist featured and in the bonus clips she talks more about her practice and work with women struggling with infertility and the success of a plant-based diet.

Interesting stuff! The peanut butter would make me a little sad, too, since I like it more than almond butter, but please share if you find a good almond butter brand. And just hang in there… summer and delicious berries aren’t too far away now :) I know I’m counting the days… mmm…

These are so helpful to me and I’m happy to know that I’ve been pumping myself FULL of every single one of these fertility foods. I think we can only do so much though. While it definitely helps us and our bodies prepare us for childbirth, sometimes, you need a little extra boost from the doctors…especially if you want it on your time.

Reply

Meagan February 9, 2012 at 6:52 am

I hate drippy almond butter too! But unlike you, I actually do like it super thick. Here’s what I do: I buy Maranatha raw creamy almond butter (the only kind I like), pour off all the oil (there’s usually about an inch of oil on top) and then stick in the fridge. This makes it pretty rock hard like cookie dough, which is how I like it. I think if you poured off less of the oil it wouldn’t be as hard and would hopefully be the consistency you like. Unfortunately I couldn’t get this technique to work with TJ’s raw almond butter b/c it didn’t have the layer of oil on top.

Thanks for the food update from your acupuncturist (spelling?)! Very informative. I would have had the same look on my face if they told me to cut back on coffee, peanut butter and yogurt. Let us know what you figure out for almond butter.

Your husband sounds like a smart man on telling you to ease into cutting out coffee. I am like you and do the ‘all or nothing’ approach, crash and burn and have the husband shaking his head saying “I told you so” ;-)

This was really interesting! I completely agree with your attitude that “it doesn’t hurt to try”. None of the changes are *too* drastic (except for the coffee and PB - that must be tough! :( ), so it’s not like it’s majorly interfering with your life. I’m crossing my fingers for you that it helps! :)

Reply

Becky Przy February 9, 2012 at 7:04 am

One quick question: did they tell you anything about exercise and if being an endurance althete had anything to do with your fertility? I know your regular MD didn’t think this was the case, but I was just wondering if your acupuncturist had any thoughs/suggestions on exercise.

I can’t imagine a life without PB, but almond butter is a pretty good substitute. I like Maranatha brand, I find it’s not too runny.

Acupuncture is something I’ve always wanted to try but been scared to do. I hope it goes well for you!

Nadine February 9, 2012 at 7:23 am

I always feel asleep in Accupuncture, odd but something about it put me right to sleep (I even slept through someone jackhammering one floor down- didn’t even hear it!).

The infertility cure is a fantastic book, really informative, I took a lot of suggestions from her and found it helpful (mine was an egg quality issue).

And, can I give you my sympathy on the coffee? I cut out coffee from my life for a few years and switched to organic green tea and twig tea (healthier but not yummier). Good plan on the slow reduction, it will soften the blow.

I’ve found in the last week just how many people have issues - and don’t talk about them! I think it’s really important to find an outlet. I’ve been so much more stress-free after sharing my struggles. It’s been quite therapeutic.

I have tried Barney Butter - loved it but didn’t love that it didn’t have a “almonds only” nutrition label. Never tried Naturally Nutty though!

Aflatoxins, as I commented to you yesterday about, yep, most naturopaths and accupuncturists are not a fan of peanuts for that reason but I do think one day you’ll be able to get back to eating PB after you heal a bit; same with coffee.

Here’s a big hug to you for dealing with giving up/avoiding two foods that you crave and love! And to finding some solutions for your health challenges.

I don’t like AB for it’s drippiness, either. I think if you let it separate and just eat the thicker parts, that’s maybe one way to deal with it?

Good luck!

Just a quick tip to experiment with on the almond butter front - I’m not sure which brand you prefer (I tend to buy whatever brands of cashew/almond/peanut butter have ingredients that list the nut as the sole ingredient - crazy richard’s, e.g.) but I’ve actually been skimming off the excess liquid at the top and then keeping the jar at room temperature. Tends to help on the consistency front!

Some interesting stuff Chelsey! Again…Im amazed at how similar your stories relate to my life! I’ve been following an anti-inflamatory diet for the past 3+ months that was recommended by my chiropractic Dr.after discovering I have PCOS, a fact I have always sort of known since having ”cycle/female” issues and all of the fun symptoms of it since teen ages. My husband and I talk about starting a family (we’re in that practice makes perfect & ”we’re not NOT trying phase”) and I knew I had to start solving this issue now rather than being slapped in the face with it when we decide to stop ”practicing” and dive in for the real deal! But frankly, its a wonder we haven’t conceived yet since I’m a strong believer in not drugging myself for contraceptive or any reason for that matter (like Metformin for PCOS-please…so I can be on Dialisis when I’m 30 for destroying my kidneys!). Anyway, I’m finding this food routine which is similar to what youve been ”advised” except Im trying to do a little lean, free range grass fed meats too, is really subsiding the PCOS symptoms so I hope
that will it will prove helpful when we really give the baby idea a Go! I’m thankful to follow you on this acupuncture journey as I’m considering it too. There’s only one in our town though and it takes months to get in :0/
Looking forward to hearing about your venture and how it works! And how you’re advised to maintain your fitness through this process too. Keeping you in my prayers for positive results and ease in the diet restrictions! Good luck girl!

PS…Blue Diamonds Almond Butter, stored upside down, then stirred well is a good consistebcy…but I always have to add a sprinkle of stevia to whatever I put it on because its just not quite the same as pb and somehow that helps a little ;0)

Infertility is an incredibly difficult to undergo, let alone to talk about; I haven’t experience with it since I’m not yet considering a family. However, I have recently been missing periods and recent reading has led me to believe that it could be linked to soy, which increases estrogen levels. Hormones thrown out of balance whatsoever can cause problems that manifest themselves in a variety of ways; if estrogen’s absence is your problem, try stocking up on tofu and lots of soy ice cream :) worth a shot

I was struggling with getting pregnant as well, and after a visit with my naturopath doctor, she suggested switching to green tea instead of coffee and the same suggestions as mentioned above. I also started taking prenatals and B vitamins. We conceived 2 months later! I think there was alot of added stress on my body from the coffee, green tea has way less caffeine and my naturopath said it is actually good for people who are trying to get pregnant. :) I wish you all the best!

Leave your almond butter upside down in the fridge and it will blend together nicely and not have as much of the drippy-ness you dislike.

I think experimenting with food and diets can be fascinating - and hopefully you don’t get too much trouble for it!

And weird…I LOVE dripping nut butters, especially on oats because it coats the whole bowl.

Reply

cleaneatingchelsey February 9, 2012 at 8:40 pm

That’s what I DON’T like about it - I’d rather save a few bites at the end for the nut butter!

I’m not sure I’m ready to give up coffee…but all of the other tips sound great! FYI…my favorite almond butter is MaraNatha creamy….its so good! I too am a huge fan of peanut butter…such a huge fan it doesn’t stay in my cabinet very long! I made the switch to almond butter when I heard how healthy it is for you and after trying this stuff I never had to look back…and they have it at Jewel! Best of luck with your journey…thinking good thoughts for you :-)

As far as the almond butter is concerned, I know what you mean! I was used to eating the Naturally Nutty smooth organic almond butter, and randomly bought a different kind that was on sale and it was SO drippy.

I don’t know if you have ever tried the Naturally Nutty, its definitely thicker, and might be too thick for what you’re looking for, but I get it in bulk at my local coop. (Which happens to be the same city that Naturally Nutty is from, so I don’t know how many places they sell it in bulk, but you could see what the consistency of the bulk kind might be at a local place near you.)

You have such a great attitude about trying those things! One book I just read, real food for mother and baby (same author as real food) has a section on a fertility diet. That’s the only section I didn’t read because the book was WAY past due back to the library, but I bet it has a lot of great info too. I loved everything else I read in there.

And I feel your coffee pain… When I got pregnant I cut out coffee all together the first trimester, now i’ve added a tiny cup back every morning. Makes me feel much more human.

So great that you have found comfort in sharing your experience. I wish you all the best!

Also to add to your list - sweet potatoes! I read that they are great for fertility. I don’t remember which country it is but they have the highest rate of twins, sweet potatoes are a staple in their diet, and a study linked those 2 factors together.

Reply

cleaneatingchelsey February 9, 2012 at 8:41 pm

I eat sweet potatoes like 4 times a week - let’s root for twins someday! haha!

Have you tried cashew butter? It is less drippy than almond butter and more like pb consistency.

Thank you for sharing all of this, Chelsey! I actually have terrible hormone issues and have been on the pill for years to help with my Acne. I know, not very horrible but for me, it was the end of the world. Apparently my hormones are out of whack. I do not want to know what happens when I get off the pill.. and I really want to as I’ve been experiencing migraines and I have a family history of breast cancer. Plus I really don’t like that idea of hormones pumped into me any more. And then there’s the baby thing.
I never talk about this issue with friends or family as to me it seems to be so complicated to make everyone REALLY understand what I feel.

that peanut butter / almond butter part really caught my eye … I actually make my own almond butter as it’s exactly the the dripping thing that turns me off :-)
Ashley on Edible Perspective has some great almond butter recipes! I love the cinnamon maple almond butter!

Anna @ The Guiltless Life February 9, 2012 at 11:14 am

All of these changes are great - I did similar ones in a recent cleanse because I am going through some OTHER issues not at all related to fertility, but which sound very much like your journey in the sense of the frustration of “WHAT is wrong with me” and why won’t anything work? I’ve been seeing a naturopath since last October and we’ve tried experiment after experiment to no avail. I had major medical tests done and again it was the same ‘thank God nothing serious is wrong’ relief followed by a ‘but what is the matter then??’ reaction. Sigh, it will work out I have to have faith!

Funnily enough I have the exact opposite issue with almond butter to you - I tend to like it less because it’s so hard! I found one almond butter that was drippy but it’s only available at one supermarket I barely ever go to so I can’t restock that easily! Good luck with everything Chelsey.

Hi Chelsey, I eat the EXACT same almond butter. What I find is that the top is “drippy” and then at the bottom its not smoothe at all, its super hard.

The solution….Give that jar a real good ole stir when you first open it. Get all the way down to the bottom and stir it up real good. Its a little tough, but well worth the balanced creamy almond butter result!

Lindsay @ Running the Windy City February 9, 2012 at 1:47 pm

Trader Joe’s almond butter with flax seed and omega 3′s isn’t very drippy. Just make sure to stir it up really well otherwise all of the flax seeds stick to the bottom.

Also, what about sunflower seed butter?

I love your all-or-nothing mentality, good luck!

Thanks for sharing this information and your journey. I have a big interest in women’s health so this info is right up my alley! And I’m with you on the “if it can’t hurt…” I have hypothyroidism and try to avoid uncooked goitrogens and, to a degree, soy, since it is likely that my thyroid issues stem from estrogen dominance. I figure it can’t hurt! :)

I think it was because of two things. 1) dairy is known to cause inflammation and 2) a lot of dairy is treated with hormones/antibiotics. I guess if I chose the organic non treated yogurt he figures I should be okay.

Chelsea — I certainly feel for you. I was once in your shoes. After many years of trying, failing, countless fertility tests, losing pregnancies, more fertility tests, laser surgery treatment for endometriosis, but still no success, I was also at the “I’ll give anything a shot” phase. I didn’t try acupuncture, but we have a small Amish community nearby and decided to see their “healer.” (Don’t know if that’s actually the correct title, but comes close to what he does.) After a very interesting examination (involving mostly using a strong lens to look into my eyes and some various strength tests) he gave me a few herbal treatments to try, and told me that I had a yeast imbalance along with a tipped uterus, and to have no caffeine, no sugar for 3 weeks. We’ll of course never know if that was the key to my success, but the next month I was pregnant with my now beautiful 21 year old daughter. I believe the healthier diet I adopted probably did have something to do with it. He also prayed over me, which didn’t hurt either. I’ll be wishing you luck and praying for your success. Thanks for sharing your story.

I know that even if you are not trying to have a baby tomorrow that it still is hard to hear of other people around you getting pregnant, and annoying when people ask when you and your hubby are having babies… just stay strong. I’m not a fan of drippy almond butter either! I’ve found that when I open a new jar, if I pour out a small amount of the oil that’s sitting at the top THEN stir it up, it’s much thicker and less runny. Hopefully that’s helps. (:

I’m also not a big fan of almond butter but I really recommend making your own! I find its pretty thick after making it (just throw the almonds in the food processor.. with or without skins, roasted or raw.. then pray your food processor doesn’t break despite the loud sound it makes!) If it’s too thick water it down with some almond milk or coconut oil or something. It’s no peanut butter.. maybe try mixing in some other nuts too to make it more interesting!

Have you tried a good green tea? Not tea bags, the real one? I stopped drinking coffee few years ago and have no cravings for it at all. Another thing I’d like to mention is go Organic. You don’t want to stress you body with all the chemicals, GMOs, ets. In one of the recent journals of American Family Physician was an interesting article about fertility and pesticides. Go organic, I would suggest, if I may. Good luck!

Chelsey, I cannot tell you how GLAD I am you decided to share your story. (I am just getting caught up on everything) My husband and I have been ‘trying’ since June, when I got off BC. I am trying to do all of the ‘right’ things- I’ve had all of my blood ‘levels’ checked- as recommended by my OBGYN- everything came back ‘normal’ and my blood doctor actually said I was ‘too healthy.’ Hey, I’ll take that :) But the only bad/ sad thing is that my body is still not ovulating. I have been taking those at home ovulation tests for MONTHS. (boy does that get expensive!) I still get my period, and all of the signs that I’m ovulating, but when I take the tests it says that I am not. I know that you can still get all of the signs that you are ovulating, but not actually ovulate. It is really hard mentally..and it can really get to you. I have been considering doing acupuncture for a while now, and I’m curious to see how you like it. My obgyn said that she could put me on Clomid to help get ‘things going.’ But I would prefer to go about it the more natural way.
Thanks again for sharing, and I can’t wait to read about your journey!
Oh, did your acupuncturist say anything about exercising too much? When I spoke to my obgyn about it, I told her the I was working out 6-7 days a week..and she about fell off her chair. She was like ‘WHAT?!’ That is way too much, you will definitely need to cut back. It’s SO hard to do. I’m still working out 6 days a week (running/ weight lifting), but I just keep hearing mixed things about that too- some people say it’s fine & others say to really cut back! I feel like everything is so mixed, hard to know what to follow.

Hey there,

I just started reading your blog over the past few weeks through Kokolikes (I’ve known Koko for 20 plus years). Anyways, since you have to give up peanut butter, try mac nut butter, sunflower butter or black sesame butter - the raw versions are amazing. If you dont love the flavors of these, try stirring in some stevia and vanilla to give it a nice flavor boost. I do this with almond butter, too.

I also wanted to let you know, that we are in a similar situation because I’ve had my fair share of lady problems and go back and fourth giving up coffee; now im on green tea…. Also, a holistic nutritionist wanted me to start eating meat again, which I did for a year and my body went into a tizzy! Currently, I am back to being a pescatarian (meaning- fish a few times a month and when in Hawaii with the family), doing yoga and pretty gluten free. Anyways, if you have any questions, please feel free to email me. I think we have a lot in common and could learn from each other.

Warmest regards,

Lauren

PS- I was also a Holistic Private Chef….I smell recipe swaps……………..
