weird weather

July 2, 2012

I have to say with complete confidence that this weekend was filled with nothing less than excitement – all of which was quite unexpected to say the least. We have had some freakish weather going on around here this weekend, starting with Friday afternoon.

This was the view outside (this picture was taken right outside the Husband’s uncle’s shop). Are those not some crazy clouds? It took all I had in me not to freak out when I saw them, but you know, I couldn’t since I was babysitting a little boy who is severely afraid of storms.

Because we couldn’t let the excitement stop there, on Friday evening, the Husband and I were settling into bed around 10:00 (okay, it was actually 9:30 –don’t judge us – we had reallly busy weeks), and all of a sudden Charlie started to bark and low growl at just about nothing at all. He got really restless, got out of his bed and started to pace the hallway which is really unlike him.

Within five to ten minutes, the wind outside started to pick up, and it started down pouring. Needless to say, the Husband and I were not tired anymore! We watched the storm from our bedroom window at first, and I was getting pretty freaked out at how fast the wind was blowing. Later, we would find out the wind was blowing at 70 mph (a hurricane is classified as a storm that reaches 74 mph – sooo you can imagine). We have a lot of old and quite large trees in our yard and throughout our neighborhood – in fact, as we were watching the storm from our bedroom, I was thinking about how far the tree in our neighbor’s backyard (it’s about 2.5 stories tall) was bending a LOT.

Within five minutes, our power was out and our street was flooded (this happens quite frequently during storms on our street). We figured we should just go to bed, which is what we did. We woke up the next morning to quite a sight. There were branches and trees down everywhere on our street, including a large portion of our next door neighbor’s tree which ended up feet away from our house.

Our power was still off, and the electric company did not have any idea as to when it was going to be put back on. The Husband went to work with plans of bringing a generator back in a few hours to plug in the refrigerator, and I rejoiced because I couldn’t clean the house without power. Okay, I probably could have, but I would have missed quite a bit and would have had to go back and redo it all again anyways. After driving around on Saturday, I felt quite lucky that no one was harmed. Our town got hit the hardest, and there were trees uprooted everywhere, trees that had fallen on cars –there was a lot of damage. It was like an obstacle course trying to get out of our neighborhood.

That afternoon, the power was still not on and the power company was predicting the power would be turned on Sunday at 3:00 PM. WHAAAT!! Thankfully we have family close by, so we grabbed some of our belongings (and Charlie) and headed to the Husband’s parents house. My parents were letting my sister, brother in law, and niece (Aubrey!) stay over there, and if we had tried to stay over there as well, it would have been too full of a house.  Of course, Charlie was in heaven. He loves visiting his grandparents, but was very confused last night when it came time to go to bed. The Husband and I slept in his childhood room/bed, which was nothing less than weird – ha.

On Sunday after church, we headed back to our house after the electric company retracted their original statement about what time the power would be turned back on. Thankfully, when we arrived home to reboot the generator, the power went back on.

Unfortunately, a lot of our neighbors are still without power and will be for a while.

That’s the power line pole in the backyard of our neighbor across the street – split right in two. There are dozens of poles which that happened to, and in order for them to get power, they first have to replace all of the poles and clean up all the debris on the lines. Some of our neighbors are not going to be getting power back until this FRIDAY! We told our neighbors they were more than welcome to come cool off over here too – it’s quite a week to have no air conditioning – it is HOT out there!

As I’m typing this, I’m also watching a crane which is a few streets over recover power line poles and trees to clean up all the debris. I’m really grateful no one was harmed during the storm – and that things are back to normal around here!

Ugh so sorry you had to go through that! My husband’s family are in Ohio, and they had some really bad storms, too. The city is predicting that they won’t get all the power back for a couple of weeks!

Yikes!!! I love having big, mature trees in our yard too but not when it’s storming! Scary stuff! We too had a crazy storm last night and you’re right watching trees bend is not a fun thing. On a good note, I made the almond/banana/ berry muffins last week. Everyone loved them! My first ever venture baking with almond flour!! Yea!

that’s crazy! I guess the storm wasn’t as bad in the city, all I noticed were some puddles on our running path saturday morning!

I can’t believe I missed those clouds! The storm wasn’t too damaging here but it was intense nonetheless. One of my major fears is having a tree fall on the house. The thought terrifies me! Glad to see your house stayed safe :)

Well, that’s exciting in the bad way! At least you guys were able to go to your in-laws’s place for a bit. I actually love storms, but I think even that would’ve been too much for me.
I love your first picture with the clouds. So trippy! :)

Friday night was WILD wasn’t it? The lightening was non stop and it lit up the sky in all sorts of crazy colors. And I’ve never seen wind like that ever! We were fortunate to keep our power and had no trees down but other people…not so much. Apparently the storm was called a derecho. I hope don’t have another one of those for a loooong while!

That sky is awesome though! I miss Midwest storms. Cali doesn’t get anything like them!

I’m glad your family is safe and your home wasn’t damaged. It’s nice that your family is close so you could get away from the heat.

That storm photo is CREEPY. I am worse than a child when it comes to storms. I can’t take them at all. We had some bad wind yesterday and our power was on and off, but I haven’t seen any damage anywhere. Then again, I haven’t left the house… so, who knows.

Yipes! ….Times like that show us who is really in control. Glad that everyone is safe!
We had a storm like that about 3 weeks ago- it was hard on the whole community because it damaged all the wheat for harvest (which was taking place around the time of the storm) and made the corn and other crops completely unrecognizable. So, people are bracing for a tough economic year with zero income and loads of bills…. Oh storms, you can sure wreck havoc in life!

This is crazy to me that where I live (near Wrigley) we had nothing - just a teeny bit of lightening. I guess that’s Chicago for you. Glad you’re okay.

We’ve been having some crazy storms on the east coast too. Most of 4 states were without power all weekend. Nuts!

Scary! But exciting. I would so rather have that kinda crazy excitement than the neverending rain and cool temperatures we’ve been getting in the Pacific Northwest! Ah well, July is here now so I am hopeful that means more sunshine!

Sorry that it’s been a trying few days and not having power is so scary and not knowing when it will be restored is very unsettling. I went through that last summer for just 2 days but it felt like a month!

The weather is super bizarre here too! A bunch of people lost power from the storm :(

It stinks not having power! We didn’t have power for a few days after hurricane Charley. Since then, we’ve always had a generator.

Chelsey what a storm!! I just wanted to say that here in Nj we had a storm with very similar results in October. We actually had a snow storm though because it was very cold and since the trees still had most of their leaves at that point the trees were weighed down pretty badly and the entire state of NJ was in a state of emergency. At my house we were without power for 8 days…and unfortunately did not have a generator. We tried to camp out in the cold huddling by the fire for 2 days but then it got too cold and stayed at a few different homes of our family that lives about 30 mins away. Glad your power came on more quickly than that!!
