sugar sugar and some more sugar

September 12, 2012

It’s already Wednesday! Everyone rejoice! To make this week even better, I didn’t have class this week. My professor had something previously planned months and months in advance, which meant we got to get out of a four hour class with an “extra” assignment that took me maybe a half hour. I’ll take it.

This week has been flying by at lightning speed, which all weeks of school have already. Yesterday was kind of a special day — we talked about September 11, and what it meant eleven years ago and what it means for us today. We didn’t go into too many specifics, but it’s crazy because none of my kids were even alive when the attacks happened. I think it’s really important they still know about it and never forget!

Peas and Crayons

Okay, so since this month is all about falling into good habits, I have to tell you — I need to cut the sugar. Seriously, it’s getting bad. My sweet tooth is always wanting more, and I think I just need to nip it in the bud right now! You’ll see what I’m talking about with my first meal… and then my snacks. TOo much sugar makes me not feel good at all!

Breakfast 6:00 AM

september112012 002

Pumpkin Oats. Cinnamon. Almond Butter. Granola. Chocolate Chips. (!!!!!) Seriously.

Followed by a drive through iced coffee — I couldn’t resist.

Lunch — 11:30 AM

I don’t have a picture of lunch because we went out, but we went to Jason’s Deli, aka one of my favorite places EVER. Just imagine the largest bowl possible with mounds of vegetables and about a half pound of hummus. Yup, that was my plate.

Snack 3:30 PM

September 9, 2012 009

I ate the whole bag. Okay, no I’m just joking.I only had a picture of this bag — I had a good handful sized that I put into a plastic bag yesterday morning. Oh, and I also grabbed some M&M’s from my co-worker’s M&M jar after school. They get me EVERY day. It’s bad.

Dinner — 6:00 PM

Dinner was stinking delicious! I was sent Rudi’s new gluten free tortillas a while ago, and they’ve been in my freezer ever since. I haven’t had a chance to try them until yesterday, and this plain one was so good. It didn’t fall apart, it wasn’t gummy at all — I approve!!

I made an egg sandwich wrap with one egg & some egg whites, lettuce, tomato, onion, and hummus. It was large and in charge, which is why it’s not wrapped up here! On the side I roasted up some green beans.

september112012 005

After dinner I did some reading, and I ate a piece of chocolate while I read.

september112012 006 Snack 9:15 PM

Up past my bedtime!!! (I’m serious) The Husband and I had to go somewhere after dinner yesterday, and we didn’t get back until around 9:00, and I was hungry. Seeing as I was lucky enough to get a LOVE drop yesterday, I broke into a little LOVE late last night.

september112012 004
One of the perks of working with an AWESOME company such as Love Grown is getting to try their products on a regular basis. Thanks Maddy and the team! :)

september112012 007
I ended out my day with a little reading in bed — lights are (hopefully when I’m typing this) hopefully going to be off by 10! That is if all the sugar I ate today don’t keep me up! :)

Question: What is your typical late night snack? (you have to be a late night snacker to be accepted here.)

Hmmmm… that’s often when I throw my arm into a cereal box. Or go for pretzels dipped in peanut butter…. I always need SOMETHING while watching “my programs”. lol

Love to see pumpkin (chocolate chip) oats are back in your life. :)

If I have a sweet tooth at night I’ll have an orange and/or dark chocolate. If I want salty, I LOVE popcorn!

Maryea {Happy Healthy Mama} September 12, 2012 at 6:38 am

Lately I’ve been eating a date (or 3) stuffed with sunbutter as my late night snack.

Lori Lynn September 12, 2012 at 6:40 am

Probably popcorn and a Zevia. Sometimes I’ll try for apple and pb, but that doesn’t always do it.

Sam @ Better With Sprinkles September 12, 2012 at 6:43 am

I try to stick with something high protein (like cottage cheese or Greek yogurt) when I snack at night, but a lot of the time I end up with chocolate or some tortilla chips and salsa. Can’t win them all!

Khushboo September 12, 2012 at 7:05 am

Haha who is NOT a late snacker anymore! My current favorite is yogurt mixed with pomengranate arils, almonds & choc protein powder!

Chelsie @ Balance, Not Scale September 12, 2012 at 7:18 am

Bedtime snack for me is usually some kind of fruit with a small spread of almond butter, a handful of mixed cashews/almonds/pistachios, and a few Teddy Grahams. Definitely keeps my tummy happy until morning! :)
I was going to say that I love your bedtime snack. Then I wanted to add your dinner. And then your breakfast. Then the sound of your lunch … Let’s just face it, that was an amazing day of eats!!

Joanne @ threeunderthree September 12, 2012 at 7:39 am

I usually either go for air-popped popcorn with a spray of olive oil and sea salt if I want savoury or dark chocolate dipped in almond butter if I want something sweet :)

I try my hardest to avoid snacking at night but if I’m hungry, I’m hungry. I was watching a movie last night and I wanted something to snack on so I had some frozen edamame. Random, but it did the trick!
I so wish they sold Love Grown granola around here! Maybe one day…

Late night snack has consistently been some kind of dairy treat/dish- frozen yogurt (<- 8 out of 10 nights haha), cottage cheese, greek yogurt…. occasionally some kind of chocolate something too!

Greek yogurt with almond butter and blueberries!

I love my sugar too! Those sesame honey almonds look dangerously addicting! I love cereal or some kind of protein “muffin” of sorts with nut butter for my evening snacks.

Parita September 12, 2012 at 8:38 am

Dark chocolate chips are my usual post dinner “snack.” But recently, I’ve been looking past the bag of deliciousness sitting in my fridge and going for the fruit. I could use the extra dose of healthy!

You shouldn’t feel bad for putting four chocolate chips in your oatmeal :) . My bowls always contain way more than that!

Reply

unfortunately, my late night snack has been cookies. I’ve gotta kick the sugar habit, too!

LOVE it when a teacher gives an assignment that takes a little focused time instead of going to class- WIN! …I need to keep my sweet tooth in check- I’m becoming even more of a chocoholic- I didn’t even know that was possible!
……….Late night snack- frozen grapes and a square of dark chocolate!

Reply

Alexis @ Hummusapien September 12, 2012 at 8:58 am

Are eggs and hummus (and maybe some hot sauce) not the best combo ever? I really need to try the iced coffee with a pump of pumpkin…sounds amaaaaazing. I can totally relate on the sugar issue…once you stop it’s so hard to stop! But kudos for only having one piece of dark chocolate! That’s a pretty difficult feat.

Mia September 12, 2012 at 9:10 am

Ice cream. I eat it almost every day. And I don’t feel even a touch guilty about it, because I’ve probably tripled the number of veggies I eat everyday over the last couple months!

Reply

Stacey September 12, 2012 at 9:28 am

If I’m up late enough, it’s usually an apple or banana with almond butter. Otherwise my late night snack is usually my dinner as I don’t get around to eating until 9pm-9:30pm - 8:30pm on a good day!

clare @ fittingitallin September 12, 2012 at 9:38 am

Um, YUM. Totally know what you mean about cravings sweets though, but amazing that you can stop at little bits! We have an m&m jar at my office and one handful = many for me. I just gotta go cold turkey or I’m a disaster

I usually just eat raw veggies or fruits at night. I am intrigued by these pumpkin oats?? Where can you get them? I also eat clean (also no diary or red meat) so I am always looking for new clean recipes!

You didn’t eat that much sugar :-P A craving for sugar is usually your body craving energy, which can come from lack of sleep, that TOM, or just stress. I’d say you did really well! But, I do know what you mean. It feels really good to get sugar out of the diet whenever possible. Just start eating more fruit when you’re craving it :) or agave or brown rice syrup

Chelsey! I am so in the same sugar boat as you. Last night I was up until 1 am studying and doing homework and when I decided to roll over for bed I could not stop thinking about how hungry I was! I woke my roommate up and we walked clear across campus in our PJs at 1 am to Dunkin Donuts, got a donut, then walked to the sorority house and picked up a bowl of cereal and then had a candy bar from the vending machine in our dorm! Still can’t believe I ate all of that sugar but I was actually hungry for it! Now it’s time for some serious sugar rehab and at least a 6 mile run!

Thanks for writing!

I wanna work with LOVE. Somehow even though I don’t, we still have 3 different flavours in our cupboards right now lol. It was also my snack of choice last night. I substituted banana slices for AB though. Still pretty fantastic!

I wish I had a typical late night snack, but really, the qualification is ‘super easy, ready to get in ma belly’ type dealio!

I’m so with you on the sugar addiction! Since Sunday, I’ve been pretty much sticking to a no added sugar diet. I even sat and watched my kids eat ice cream cones (not easy). But, I have to admit, I do feel better. All of your eats look so good and I love Jason’s Deli…it’s the best!! My late night snack these days is a peach cut up in almond milk with a dap of sunbutter or nuts.

Reply

Lisa September 12, 2012 at 1:48 pm

I have a HUGE sweet tooth too. To balance it out, I incorporate a lot of fruit into my diet. I probably eat 6-7 servings of fruit a day. I still sneak in some candy but my palette is satiated enough not to gorge on bad sweets. I don’t even crave chocolate anymore!

Connie September 12, 2012 at 2:02 pm

Haha I do the same thing at Jason’s Deli..I just keep loading up on veggies and mixing them with their hummus. SOO goooood!! Now I want some of their soft serve…

I can’t wait till I can have warm oats again. Cool weather come faster! I always always always have to have a nighttime snack. It’s almost always cottage cheese with a splash of almond milk and a tbs. of nut butter:)

I heard on the psych files that people who prefer sweets or have a sweet tooth are perceived as nice and sweet and easy to get along with. This totally makes sense to me (my boyfriend loves sweets and is a total sweet heart, you seem very nice also). Kind of worries me since I am a salty person. I love salt and vinegar everything, pickles, pop corn, all that kind of stuff.

I am totally a late night snacker - in fact I totally posted about late night snacks of my blog today :) . But my favorite late night snack is a blob of almond butter (preferably Justin’s) with a packet of Oat Fit cinnamon roll flavor and a packet of truvia. Mix thoroughly then add almond milk and stir until the desired consistency. I like mine with just a splash. It tastes like a no-bake cinnamon cookie! So good!

Yay for pumpkin oats. I have been eating pumpkin oat bran non stop. I’ve passed obsession on this one.
I really wish Love Grown would come over to my parts of the area, sadness.
I always eat before bed, usually a protein muffin or something along those lines.

Kammie @ Sensual Appeal September 12, 2012 at 4:05 pm

For a late night snack I usually make myself protein pancakes… I can’t resist. Gotta get that protein + fats at night, I try to keep carbs low before bed so I use it with coconut flour. Or a plain greek yogurt + protein powder and some fruit on top (cause I simply can’t go without any toppings)

I have been a night snacker ever since tiny childhood. I just gotta have something before I go to bed… I think my mom must’ve sent me to bed with a bottle too long. Often I like an apple (core and all) or some toast & milk. But if I have anything in the house trashier than that, it’s all over. Daytime I have great control but at night all bets are off.

Reply

Lauren @ The Homeostatic Mindset September 13, 2012 at 4:02 pm

Well, #1- I REQUIRE a bed night snack. I just do ;) And it is super rando and always dependent on my cravings. Last night was a hummus and carrots & pumpkin seeds, plus a scoop of hazelnut butter + 100% chocolate chips + drizzle of honey + crackle of sea salt. Umm, ya. I died. Other night it was hard-boiled egg with hummus. Sometimes rice cake with PB and jam. Sometimes cereal. Sometimes quinoa and pumpkin seeds and hummus. Haha, see? I told you it was super rando, but whatever. If I don’t eat before bed I feel like I’m dying when I wake up. #exaggeration #butstill
