Do you tend to have nagging household tasks that you just. can’t. seem. to get done?
Welcome to my workout clothes drawer(s).
My drawer had gotten so bad that I actually forgot what clothes I have. The Husband and I share our dresser as there is only enough room in our bedroom for one. Let me tell you, it is muy difficult to fit all of our belongings in this dresser and the closet.
And here’s the thing – I often find that I just have too many things. I have workout shorts and pants that I haven’t worn in years because either the fit is not something I like or they just need to be retired. I also have a huge drawer full of shirts from various races, events, and yes… high school sports that needed to be dominated. Because really – when is the last time I wore my swim team’s sectional shirt from 2003? Yeah.. that’s what I thought.
So I set out over the weekend on an organization spree with three of my dresser drawers. I love mini organization sprees because I feel so accomplished yet I don’t feel overwhelmed by the task at hand. I couldn’t believe how many items I got rid of. I was shocked when I looked at my bed and saw the huge pile of clothes I was getting rid of. Combined with the clothes I planned to keep, I have absolutely no idea how I fit all of those clothes into three dresser drawers.
Ridiculous, right? Check out that velour track suit circa 2004. I bet you’re jealous I didn’t offer it up to you.
By the time I was done, I was pleasantly surprised with my new drawers. In fact, every time I open them up I get a little giddy and excited about picking out a workout outfit. The best!
I reserved a small drawer for sports bras only (they were taking over my other undergarment drawers).
There was also a drawer that is broken up into three different sections. On the right, we have workout pants and capris. In the middle, we have two different rows of workout tanks and tees. On the left, I have some zip ups and long sleeved race shirts.
Can you spot my new Old Navy Women’s Active Compression Jacket and striped bubble tank? Seriously, in love with these pieces!
The third drawer I cleaned out is full of my lounging pants and pajamas. Before, everything was all jumbled together and it was driving me nuts!
In all, I got rid of an entire garbage bag full of clothing. I am trying really hard not to take this new organized dresser as an invitation to buy a new wardrobe of clothing – except I think I miiiight have some more room for another compression jacket.
Just one last reminder too – I wanted to let you know you still have one more day to take advantage of the 40% off Active by Old Navy line! Plus, another great bonus is that they offer free shipping on all orders over $50.
Question: What is the nagging household task you just can’t seem to bring yourself to complete?

I feel like I go through my dresser drawers at least once a year, and there’s still so much stuff in there! I share a dresser with my husband too, and it would really help if he could go through his clothes…
i HATE organizing!! but doing a small bit at a time definitely makes it seem more manageable. and i definitely still have high school shirts in my drawers… hmm, maybe itz time to clean??
hahaha I love that you said “itz”
I just recently cleaned out a couple of drawers too and it does just make you feel sooooo much better! I do still have a bit of problem thinking “well I might wear this again”……
I always do that too - however, rarely do I ever think “gosh, I wish I didn’t give that away!!”
I just recently cleaned out our pantry and it was the best feeling ever! It was definitely one of those nagging household tasks that I kept putting off, and now I get so excited every time I open our pantry door. I’m thinking the next task will be cleaning out a couple of our cupboards. We have more coffee mugs than I can count!
I love to organize (I just reorganized my entire kitchen over our Christmas break haha) but I absolutely HATE cleaning the shower…it’s the one chore that I always avoid. Sometimes I’m lucky enough to convince my husband to do it. It disgusts me beyond belief that the place we get clean can get so dirty!
I love the feeling of an organized house/work place. It makes me feel so fresh. I really hate keeping the inside of my car clean! It gets really, really scary in there sometimes and I wont clean it until I think spiders have decided to move in.
organize my closet and my garage. I need to so bad I just dont want to !
I seriously need to do this too - my drawers are jam packed with so many clothes I never wear. But I keep on holding onto them because there’s just a slight chance that I might wear them again.
I am absolutely horrible about stockpiling old t-shirts. I have almost 2 drawers full of t-shirts from high school, college, and running events (plus other various shirts), and I must admit that they are definitely taking over my dresser! It is just always so difficult for me to get rid of them. I probably only wear about 1/5 of them, but most of the seem so sentimental to me. I really need to have someone make me a t-shirt quilt (have you seen these?..they are pretty cool), or just get with it and purge my “least sentimental” t-shirts. One of these days….
Ugh, I JUST did this same thing a few weeks ago. My workout clothes drawer looked like a disaster took place. For some reason, I have the hardest time keeping that particular one organized. It never fails, I clean it out and a few days later, it explodes.
I desperately need to do this! I have so many clothes that I haven’t worn in years, but I keep them around. The workout drawer is particularly bad!
Chelsea-
Congrats on getting more organized. Just as an FYI, if you have a bunch of tshirts from events you have attended, college, etc, they make WONDERFUL tshirt quilts. My mother made one for me and my husband out of a combination of our tshirts (I took it with me for the year we were living in different states, and it was a big help) and I am in the process of making one for my brother in law out of his. They make lightweight quilts that are great for all year, and it’s a great way to use/keep the tshirts that accumulate through our lives but we end up never wearing. Just a thought
I have a ridiculously hard time parting with old clothes, but it feels soooooo good to get rid of a huge bag of stuff. Something I’m putting off doing? Finishing decorating my place! I actually love decorating, but there are soooo many different things out there that I love, that I can’t decide what direction I want to go…
I love doing this every so often. A couple months ago I tackled my dresser and ended up donating about three bags full of old clothing. There were wayyyy too many high school cheerleading t-shirts hanging around for my own good.
Changing bed clothes and cleaning out my drawers…needs to be done BADLY!!!
I had big plans to clean my room and clean out my closet before the new year. Yeah. That bag of clothes that I decided I didn’t want anymore is STILL sitting on the floor of my bedroom. Procrastination, thy name is Becky. I still have big plans, and the time to do it, I’m just lazy. :-/
Disorganized dresser drawers are my pet peeve! I can’t stand not having room for everything and love the feeling of a newly cleaned out and organized drawer. I totally agree, small organization tasks (like tackling one closet for example) are the best, you feel accomplished afterwards but the task at hand isn’t so overwhelming that you dread doing it to begin with. Great job!
Well now I feel like my drawers need to be organized. You’ve inspired me! I can barely shut my drawers, so a little organization would be good for me.
Dusting kills me… But I will say that cleaning out the drawers a few times a year makes me feel better. I like having everything neat and organized.
I agree with you that doing mini cleaning sprees is the way to go. I have been doing one or two cleaning sprees every few days since the new year and it is making me feel so much better! I love things being organized and it totally helps stress levels.
I have the same problem. There’s not enough space anywhere for my workout stuff. I hate to part with my nostalgic tshirts, but I guess it’s time when I find a few that I haven’t seen in YEARS!
see my comment above about Tshirt quilts. If you don’t want to part with the t’s and you just don’t wear them, turn them into something that will last you forever
Ohh my workout/t-shirt drawers get crazy from time to time!
I cleaned out my closet this weekend and got rid of at least 1/4 of what I had. This happens to me once every 2 to 3 years!
I need to clean out my closets too, I have so many high school shirts that I keep saving for, well I have no idea why. My least favorite household chore is emptying the dish washer. I don’t know why but I just hate to do it. Did you donate your clothes to good will?
I suppose organizing dresser drawers would be something that wouldn’t ever get done, that is if I ever actually put the clothes away. My number one fail is folding and putting away laundry. It just always gets thrown into a clothes basket in the spare bedroom…
Ugh, I just cleaned out my closet and dresser drawers. It was a nightmare in there - I have 4 bags for Goodwill. I’m fighting the urge to refill my drawers just like you are…. I could use a new compression jacket too!
good for you! i did a mini-version of this when i moved two months ago (i promised myself i’d see it the full way through once i got settled, but i still haven’t got around to it!) i still have like all my high school tshirts too lol and i don’t know why i won’t throw away the ten pairs of worn out black workout pants that aren’t even in good enough shape to be donated… ahh maybe this post will push me in the right direction lol
Chelsey- I just started reading your blog and am hooked! I made your stuffed pepper soup this morning, and it’s delicious!
I wanted to give you a cool idea for those old and sentimental high school t shirts that you have/had….apparently over the last couple years my mom had been sneakily stealing said t shirts from me….she had them cut up to make a quilt, and let me tell you…I cried when I received it! It had my first t shirt from little league, dance competitions, Space Camp (yes, huge nerd here!) etc etc. Its great to get the shirts out of my bureau and out on display!
We moved recently so I had tons of opportunities to soft through eveything and organize it all. But that was 4 months ago and things are beginning to get crazy unorganized again. I should really work on our closets and dresser. Ours is just as bad as what you described!
My husband and I could never share a closet or a dresser. Since he’s 6’8” and on the heavier side, his clothes take up so much room! Usually the tasks I put off are dishes and laundry. Mostly because I have to do them what seems like daily and I get tired of them!
Between moving and loosing a lot of weight over the last year and a half, I have completely shrunk the wardrobe. I’m trying really hard to only keep things that fit well and look great. As for what I need to do that I’m putting off, it’s draining and scrubbing the turtle tank. It’s really not that bad of a job, but it takes a little while to do it right and it’s not fun. I did change some water not too long ago, but the algae is creeping up in the corners. Maybe this weekend.
i like organizing stuff!
mabye a lil too much! but my problem is just finding the time to sit down and organize through stuff!
well i’d have to say hand down my least fav househould task is cleaning the bathroom! but i make myself do it cuase i hate a dirty bathroom! lol
I had a kitchen drawer full of spices and baking stuff…when I decided to clean it out recently I was throwing away stuff that expired in 2010! After some wiping and drying, my juicer and my blender have a new home, where they can come and go with ease!
I dislike folding and putting laundry away. I don’t mind the process of washing/putting on the drying rack, but when it comes to actually doing something with clean laundry, I procrastinate.
My workout clothes drawer is pretty similar to your first pic. I kind of have an excuse though. Any time I leave it the least bit cracked, my cat pulls it open and drags out all my shorts piece by piece. I’m not sure if she gets a kick out of pulling them all out or a kick out of watching me shove them all back in.
I have gotten rid of SOO much stuff over the past year and it feel amazing. It’s incredible how much we actually need. A big clean out feels so refreshing.
I have a bunch of boxes that need to be better organized to make more room in storage. I’m putting it off like the plague. :/
