twins: the details

March 19, 2013

First of all, thank you thank you THANK YOU for all of the warm congratulations yesterday. The babes and I feel very loved and grateful to have wonderful readers like you! Needless to say, the Husband and I are very excited about it all.

And because I want to give you a peek at the babies before I get into the details, here’s one of their first pictures!

baby a

baby b (who apparently takes after his/her father and doesn’t like to be photographed)

I’ll give you some pictures of me along the way as well, but I wasn’t feeling up to taking any yesterday. I promise I’ll give you a bump picture next week.

On with the details!

How far along are you?

12.5 weeks – I wanted to wait until after our 12 week appointment (which was last Thursday) to share everything. I’ve been a Nervous Nelly! Thankfully, the babies are both kicking and are little jumping beans in there. I’ve had three ultrasounds in the last week (that’s another story for another day – ugh.), and each time at least one of them is extremely active and seriously bouncing around and doing flips. It’s hilarious.

When are you due?

September 28. However, with two growing babies, I am not expecting to make it that long. I am hoping to make it to 37-38 weeks. Hopefully these two will cooperate!

When/How did you find out?

I found out on January 17 in the morning when I woke up. I was two days away from my expected period. I could barely wait any longer, but I was so so nervous to take that test. After you see nothing but negatives for a year, it’s hard to expect anything different to show up. I had a feeling though, so I took a first response test when I first woke up. I jumped into the shower because I couldn’t stand to watch the test unfold. When I got out, we had two lines – positive!!

Who was the first person you told?

John! It was about 5:15 in the morning, and I ran into the bedroom screaming. He immediately shot up thinking the house was on fire until I told him the news. Shortly after we told our moms and a few close friends. We kept everyone else in the dark for a while, and slowly told people after that. I was really nervous once we found out it was twins, but apparently we are horrible at keeping secrets.

Were you and the husband “trying”?

Yes. As you might remember last year I briefly discussed this with everyone. It’s been a long, hard, and trying process to tell you the truth. Even though it was a difficult year, I feel it brought us together as a couple. In a strange way, I’m glad we went through what we did. Plus, if it had worked any sooner, it wouldn’t be these babies.

I definitely don’t want to discount anyone who has gone through this struggle for longer than we did. I know there are people out there who try and try for YEARS with no results. We definitely feel so blessed to be given the opportunity to be given these two loves.

How did you and the husband decide it was the right time to have kids?

I’ve wanted to be a mom since the day we got married! The husband needed some time, and in hindsight, I’m glad we took time as a couple before we started trying for kids. Not to be cliché, but it just “feels” right. And honestly, there’s never a “right” or “wrong” time. Heck, for the first year of these babies’ lives I’m going to still be in grad school! It’ll be a crazy ride, that’s for sure!

When did you find out it was twins?

We found out on February 7. We went in for an early ultrasound, and lo and behold – two babies! No wonder my pants already could barely zip up at seven weeks along!

Are you surprised it’s twins?

Yes and no. To be honest, so many people in my life have always told me (from many years ago) that they have always pictured me with twins. My mom started telling me at the ripe age of about 12 years old that she thought I was going to have twins someday. Plus my aunt’s friend who is ALWAYS right about everything told us when we got married that she saw us with twins someday. When I told my sister it was twins she freaked out on the phone with me for a long time because of everyone’s premonitions.

Are you going to find out the sex ahead of time?

Absolutely, 100%, yes!!! I didn’t think the husband would go for it since his family typically lets it be a surprise. But with two, there’s no way we couldn’t know. He’s rooting for two boys, but my mother’s intuition tells me there’s at least one girl in there! I’ve had a few dreams already and there’s always at least one girl!

How did your family/friends react?

They were happy when we told them we were pregnant. When we followed it up with, “wait there’s more…” and told them it was twins, it was so fun to see the shock on their faces!

When did you tell other people?

We told some people immediately, and others we kept it a secret from for a while. We told our entire extended families and some close friends around 9 weeks. I was so nervous someone would slip that I changed my Facebook settings so that no one could write on my wall (I’m neurotic). A few people at work knew the entire time (I could not hide constant nausea from them), but I let the cat out of the bag to the rest of the staff last week as well as to all the 5th graders.

What pregnancy symptoms have you experienced?

I’ve actually been fairly lucky in this department. Other than constant nausea from weeks six to nine, I felt pretty okay. I learned early on what would stop me from feeling sick, which was nice. I was (and still am) exhausted every single day of my life and would love to just sit on the couch in my sweats all the time.

The biggest thing so far has been food aversions. Pregnancy does some crazy things to you, I tell ya! Coffee makes me want to vomit. Humus is on my no no list. Raw garlic and onions are the bane of my existence. I have pretty much at some point hated every single food that I have loved before pregnancy. Ketchup and I had a tiff for about a week or so and I was so sad. Another time, I think I ate buttered noodles for four days straight. I’ve been all about the carbs!

I haven’t gotten too sick, which has been nice. We did have a little scare over this past weekend which I’ll talk about in next week’s post. Being pregnant is frightening, that’s for sure.

Are you planning to discuss your pregnancy on the blog?

Absolutely! I don’t want it to be baby overload because I know its not everyone’s cup of tea. However, I do want to remember this special time years down the road. I will most likely be doing weekly posts to update everyone on how things are going.

I have a bunch of topics that I want to cover in the upcoming weeks. However, if there’s anything in particular you would like for me to cover, just comment below or shoot me an email! Thanks for being so excited about going through this ride with me!

That is such exciting news!! I couldn’t be happier for you! I don’t know if this is too personal, but I’d love for you to share your fertility struggles. I know so many women go through this and it is so hush hush and I wish it wasn’t such a taboo topic! I know you significantly changed your workout routine and upped your healthy fats, but did you use any sort of fertility treatments or drugs? I know twins are typical of fertility drugs. Was this the case with y’all or are these twins natural? Again, sorry if this is too personal and please don’t feel obligated to answer but shedding light on this issue and how you obviously combatted it with healthy twins is inspiring!! Again, congrats and I cannot WAIT to follow along with you! I think you’re the first healthy living blogger than has had twins!!!! Congrats again and please share as you feel comfortable!

I was also hoping to hear more about this, but completely understand if you don’t feel comfortable talking about the details. As someone who is going through this myself, it’s always comforting hearing someone else’s story.

And once again, so excited for you guys!!

Thank you for taking the time to respond and not just ignoring the question. I really appreciate it. Can’t wait to read more. So fun!! Congrats again

Congrats, again, Chelsey! I endured fertility treatments for 7 years and have finally ceased that abuse. My husband and I are currently pursing domestic, infant adoption. I’ve been reading your blog for a long time and know you’ve gone through a lot of different treatments (acupuncture, deuce exercise, diet alterations, etc) as have I. I’m wondering what you think proved to be most successful in your pregnancy. :) )

CONGRATS! That is so exciting with 2! My mom kept telling me she was praying we had twins and I kept telling her to stop. lol
We waited until I was at 12 week before telling anyone. I was so afraid of something happening if we told people too early.

CONGRATS!!!!!!! That is so exciting. =) I have been following your blog and I love it. I am a speech pathologist in a public school setting in MA. =) I am so excited for you!! I went through some fertility issues myself. We tried for about a year (a little longer). I had to drastically change my diet and exercise. We went to a fertility specialist and had some help. With some drugs, we were successful. I am a little over 16 weeks and due Sept 1st!!!! I would LOVEEEE to hear your story!!! I look forward to reading your blog and the updates on the twins.

Echoing some of the comments above, I’d be interested in hearing what helped, or even just what you think helped, you achieve this wonderful pregnancy. I’m an IVF “survivor” with a beautiful daughter to show for it. I’ve tried anything and everything. While I’m hoping the next kid will come along with much less struggle, I’m open to anything because IVF brought us our perfect child. I’m so excited for you and hope you are pampering yourself! That’s what pregnancy is for :)

My mom is really concerned about hormones and their potential long-term effects, but I’m not sure I’ll be able to conceive without them. I know you discussed some of your journey, including the return of your period, but if you’re comfortable sharing, I would really appreciate hearing what (if any) additional steps you had to take.

You won’t bore me with baby details- I love baby details. It is so amazing to me how each and every pregnancy is SO different (even from child to child) so I love to hear how it is for you. I wish you all the best and document your journey as best you can, it will become a haze because it goes so quickly……
Also, I didn’t even let the husband tell his parents till we were 12 weeks and I told everyone else at 19.5 weeks so don’t feel bad about being a ‘Nervous Nelly’-
Isn’t it fun sharing it with your students!!!! I told my kiddos at school before I told anyone else (except the CLOSE friends & fam) so they spread the news for me….. ENJOY every minute! :) {hugs}

Michelle,
You will make a great Mom to those so loved twins you are carrying. As speaking from experiense, it definitely will be an adventure and some days you will wonder why me…..lol Of course, I wasn’t prepared for twins as you are so you will be alittle more composed I’m sure. I was already for the one but when the other came out, our whole world changed. You will cry, laugh and some days wished that there was only one but as they grow, they are so much company for each other and form a special bond that will never be broken. My identical girls are closer now than ever and text all the time although there are too many miles between them to visit in person. When they were little, if I spanked one, the other always cried first. They did everything together- eating, sleeping and crying….. They are similar but different in many ways each with their own personality. Of course, they hated being called the “twins” and not by their individual names. Most of all, they hated when I dressed them alike but as they got older, it was the same pattern but different color. From 1st grade on, I had them put in different classes so everyone would know them as Misti or Melissa not the twins. It was hard raising the girls for Tom worked shift work back in those days and I would have them alot by myself except on weekends when my Sister/Mother-in-law would help out. They were funny growing up and wished I had kept a written a book of all the things they did and said. You do tend to forget after all these years and at the time, you just wanted to get thru the day……..Wouldn’t trade them for anything but you do have your good days and bad in raising any children. I know your parents would have been so proud for the twins were the apple of my Dad’s eyes. Good luck and things will out turn out for the good. It will be a roller coaster some days and calm at sea others. Those babies will be so privileged to have both you and John as their parents and I’m sure want for nothing. . Uncle Ray and Aunt Joene will be watching over you every step of the way. Your cousin, Marlene

SO, SO happy for you! Can’t wait to keep following along.

Pregnancy is so nerve-wracking, and I hate that you’ve already had a scare. We did too, and for that reason, I kind of hated being pregnant. Everyone told me to enjoy pregnancy because it’s much harder to care for a baby on the outside than a baby on the inside. While that’s true, it is SO reassuring holding your baby knowing that he’s OK. I’m saying lots of prayers for you and your little ones — can’t wait til you get to that stage!

I skipped a few weeks of reading my favorite blogs due to CRAZY amounts of work and wedding planning and had a gut feeling I would be reading a post like this from you when I returned. Congratulations! I can’t wait to read about this amazing journey!

Yay for you and your husband! I have 16-month old identical boys and it is so fun (a lot of work too, but one baby, two babies, three babies etc are all a lot of work). I watched them on their monitors last night at bedtime and they spent a good 10 minutes standing by the railings of their cribs, handing stuffed animals back and forth while giggling before lying down to sleep. Sounds so mundane, but I loved watching it! If you haven’t read it yet, Barbara Luke’s book “When Your expecting Twins, Triplets or More” can be a great resource and provided a nice framework on how to think about growing those babies as big as you can since multiples tend to come earlier than singletons (although some of it needs to be taken with a grain of salt) . I am sure that you will be inundated with advice throughout your pregnancy, so I’ll just finish by saying congrats and I’m looking forward to your pregnancy posts!

I bought that book weeks ago and LOVED it!!! I definitely have been trying to follow their “gain weight early” rule, but ummm yeah, I am down 7 pounds. I’m trying!!!

Eat up, girl!!!!! I have been reading that book too and I’m determined to put on the weight :) Trust me, in the next few weeks your hunger will RAGE! Try drinking calories - I drink a TON of 2% milk :) I’m still not where I need to be, but at 16 weeks I’ve gained 13 lbs. Love all of the details and I can’t wait to keep reading more :) xoxo

P.S. can’t wait to see a bump shot! Are you in maternity clothes yet? The band?

haha hooray for baby acrobatics! I go in for my next U/S tomorrow and I’m probably not going to sleep AT ALL! So excited! And OMG you’re dreaming about them already!? ahhh! All my friends that had baby dreams predicted the sex in their dreams and ALL OF THEM were correct! It’s nuts!

Soooo INCREDIBLY HaPPy for you :) Ive followed your blog now for several months and wondered if y’all were trying to have children. My husband and I have just started trying this year and I’m nervous/excited/anxious for what is to come and all the possibilities. So please do share all that you feel comfortable with and appropriate for you and your husband’s privacy.

Reading all of this gave me little shivers again. I’m just so happy for you. I remember reading about your pregnancy struggles and hoping for the best for you. My aunt went through years of trying and I know how much of a blessing it was for her to finally get pregnant. Much love to you, the husband, and the two sweeties you’ll soon have.

Congratulations Chelsey!!! I’m SOOOOO happy for you! I know you have been struggling and really wanting a baby (babies!!) for a long time. This is wonderful news. I shared a similar journey ( a year of struggles/not knowing what was wrong) and have triplets that will be 13 next month! To say we were shocked is an understatement - but I too, always wanted twins (anything more never entered my mind). I really respect your responses to questions about fertility. I know the questions come from a good place, but it really is personal information. I believe anyone with multiples gets these questions a million times these days! Sending lots of light to you and those wee ones :-)

Still so excited for you. I can’t wait until my husband and I are blessed in the same way! (Although I don’t necessarily want twins, lol). I love my best friend’s twins and while they rock now, it’s definitely harder to have twins. Not impossible, just harder than I think I could handle for my first. Her twins were her third and fourth and she was pretty well versed in child-raising by then.

That said, as a teacher you are really used to multiple children needing things all at once. I think you’ll be an awesome mother and I can’t wait to keep reading about your journey :)

Congrats!! That’s so exciting. And yes, pregnancy does do such weird things to your food likes/dislikes. I’m not much of a meat eater but in my first trimester, I LOVED meat. And I never wanted to go out for Chinese or Mexican, but those have been my cuisines of choice for the whole pregnancy. I also loved potatoes in all forms and nacho cheese. And coffee also made me want to puke - but that went away once I got into the 2nd tri, so you might still come back around. ;)

First off, congratulations! You must be ecstatic!

On another note, I idolize you for being so healthy and now having these two blessings inside you. I myself was given the dx of HA 8mos ago and have since gained 12lbs, am eating a ton and am doing next to nothing in terms of exercise to try and regain my monthly friend…well, now I’m in despair…. I would love if you wouldn’t mind sharing how you managed to remain so healthy and fit while still getting preggo. You are an inspiration!

Thanks in advance!

Oh my! I am just SO happy for you…and I swear our stories are similar (minus the twins haha!) I took the test before hopping in the shower but the result came up SO fast, that I didn’t even need to step in the shower!!! I was and still am in school with a newborn. And I admit, it’s SO challenging, but if you have the support and determination then it’s so worth it!! And, I totally think there’s at least one girl in there because I totally ate buttered gnocchi during my first trimester because it just tasted so darn good!!

Can’t wait for the weekly updates!!
