the twins: 13 weeks

March 26, 2013

Another week has come and gone! 13 weeks down (this past Saturday), and hopefully 24 more to go. I apologize for being absent, but this weekend and up until I am writing this post (Monday night), I had not opened up my computer at all. It was pretty nice, I’m not going to lie!

I’m hoping with these posts that I’ll be able to give you a small window into what my pregnancy is going through on a weekly basis. Not only that, but I am excited to be able to look back on this later on and remember this special time.

Let’s start with a (crappy Instagram) picture of the bump. I didn’t have anyone around to take a nice picture of me, so this will have to do for the week! As you can see, it is quickly taking over.

I’m afraid I am going to go right from first trimester to third trimester in my bump size VERY quickly. Eek!

What’s been going on this week…

Weight Gained: More like weight lost at this point. I’ve been trying not to stress out about it, but I’ve actually lost close to ten pounds. I know it’s pretty normal in the first trimester, but with two in there, it makes me nervous! Gaining weight early on is pretty important in twin pregnancies, so fingers crossed I can pack those pounds on soon.

Symptoms: Ugh. I spoke too soon last week. This week has probably been the worst week so far. You guys know I tell it how it is, and this is no different!

  • Round Ligament Pain: Holy COW. I know everything in my body is stretching at an exuberant rate, but the round ligament pain I’ve been feeling this past week has been downright debilitating. It’s especially worse in the morning when I haven’t been up and moving around and stretching everything out. Thankfully I have an awesome massage therapist that I have worked out to see every two weeks from here on out. Because of awesome insurance, it’s not a problem for me to go that often. I went and saw him yesterday, and he loosened things up a lot as well as showed me some great stretches to do to help manage the pain.
  • Nausea:  mainly from a case of the stomach flu I had last week. Yeah, I’ll get to that one in a bit.
  • Lower Back Pain: I better get used to it! ;)
  • Lack of desire to eat. At. All. Thankfully this is passing, but I’m still feeling an overwhelming amount of food aversions this week!
  • Intestinal/stomach pain: Definitely made worse by my stomach flu, but I feel like this past week, my stomach really popped (overnight!) and that caused everything to move around and get squished. Hopefully my body just gets used to that one!

Movement: Nope, none yet! Actually, it’s a common misconception that you can feel movement in twin pregnancies earlier than singletons. I won’t be feeling any movement for a while! (Although they are seriously doing flips in there)

Food Aversions: Ummm, everything? It sure feels like it! I haven’t cooked really in the last week. My poor husband has been living off of leftovers, frozen pizza, and a soup I had previously made (and will only let him heat it up when I’m out of the room. It’s smelly). Garlic and onions have been the constant aversions in my life lately. Mexican food makes me want to barf – as does peanut butter. The only things that sound good right now aren’t good for me at all. Things like chips and a ridiculous amount of carbs.

Sleep: Hit or miss. I’m typically up in the middle of the night because my stomach is rumbling. Instead of ignoring it, I always grab a bowl of cereal or something and watch Friends on the couch. I usually end up falling asleep on the couch for the second half of the night. Extra pillows are my best friends right now.

Stretch Marks?  None, but I don’t want to speak too soon. I am HORRIBLE at putting on my lotion every day. I need to give myself a star chart for doing it!

Miss Anything? Not really – I’m just taking it all in!

Belly Button in or out? In – I’m hoping it will stay that way (outies on pregnant ladies creep the husband out – ha!), but I doubt it will.

Happy or moody most of the time? Ha! This week I’ve been extremely moody. On Sunday morning I cried three times before we left for church at 8:30 in the morning. I seriously pity my husband.

New Baby Items: We haven’t bought anything yet! Well, with the exception of the two pairs of shoes I bought for the picture last week. We are going to go order our cribs sometime this week. We have wonderful mothers who are each gifting us one. We are going with this crib from Pottery Barn Kids. I LOVE it!!!

Exercise: Has been non-existent this week. With being sick, I had zero energy to do any sort of working out. Now with this round ligament pain, my doctor told me the only thing that really helps it is stretching and rest. I’m hoping it goes away soon! Regardless, I’m going to go for a few walks this week and see how things go.

The Scare

Now, I don’t want to make this the longest post in the history of all time, but I did allude to telling you all about something that happened last week before I even announced my pregnancy.

It was probably the scariest night of my life – and I’m so glad it had a good ending. I started vomiting (excessively) and had horrible back and abdominal cramping last Sunday night. Cramping has been normal throughout my entire pregnancy, but the cramps typically come and go and don’t last long at all. This was different. It was painful, I was curled into a ball, and I could not move. After crying for about an hour, I made a phone call to my  mom who suggested the Husband take me to the emergency room. I seriously 100% thought I was having a miscarriage at that point.

Thankfully, we live only about five minutes away from the hospital, and the Husband got me there in no time. He had to wheel me in because I couldn’t walk, and my mom met us there immediately. I really was in my own little world at that moment because I was in so much pain (hence my moans and screams that probably scared off other patients), so I don’t have too much recollection of the whole experience. However, I do remember getting hooked up to an IV, waiting FOREVER, and then having to have a catheter put in so I could have an ultrasound (makes no sense to me at all!). Thankfully, everything was fine with the babies and they were jumping and moving like crazy. The doctor thought I had a bought of some stomach bug. He gave me some medicine and sent me on my (still unhappy and in pain) way. When I followed up the next day with my OB, she thought it was all due to round ligament pains. I think it was a little bit of both.

After that, I spent three days on the couch – one day with a fever – and the pain honestly would not go away. I think my intestines were really hating on me, but thankfully everything is feeling about 80% better than it was before.

I am hoping and praying things keep going up from here and that last week was just a hard week in general!

Question for moms: Did you have any weeks where you felt like you regressed in your pregnancy symptom wise?

Question for moms of twins: Did you have any debilitating round ligament pain? How did you manage it?

Oh wow Chelsey, that is just terrifying though of course so so glad that everything is alright! That’s good you were close to the hospital too, to at least get the process of treatment going faster… you never know how long you might have to wait at hospitals :(
That is great you are feeling better too.. gah stomach bugs are the worse plus pregnancy?! No bueno. Keep on the mend lady, I am sending healing vibes your way :) I look forward to reading more about your journey with this. Plus it’s even more interesting for me right now as I am currently in the maternity section of nursing school! So I know what you are talking about with the cath + ultrasound.. it does make sense, err sort of haha. You are looking lovely too :)

cleaneatingchelsey March 26, 2013 at 7:22 am

Yeah, they said it was because they needed to add fluid to my bladder for the ultrasound, but I’ve had ultrasounds without a full bladder and everything was still been able to be seen! Blah. I think the worst part of it was when they took it out. Holy crap that hurt!!!

Reply

Holly March 27, 2013 at 6:25 am

Cute bump! Glad u r feeling better from the stomach bug! Yeah I’m surprised they filled your bladder because by 13 weeks you can usually see everything fine transabdominally. Maybe they wanted a better look at cervix, but you should be able to see that too. Maybe its just their protocol.

Reply

cleaneatingchelsey March 27, 2013 at 7:38 am

I think they did say something about it being protocol. I didn’t enjoy that protocol though! ;)

Oh so scary and sorry I wasn’t around to chat. I hate knowing you went through that. Glad it was just some sort of bug and you’re doing so much better. You look gorgeous by the way! And for the back pain? I have a friend 20 weeks pregnant with twins right now and she says she can’t believe how much the back pain is always there. You better get John signed up for back massages nightly now. ;)

:) Thanks friend. It was quite a week, that’s for sure! haha, and John is a guy who says “go get a massage” because he hates giving massages. That’s why I’m signed up for almost weekly appointments as of now!! And the back pain I’m experiencing is NOTHING like the sciatica pain you felt. Youch!

What a scary moment, but thankfully the little babes are okay and you’re feeling better.
I am 29ish weeks pregnant (with just one), and I started to feel some odd pain “down there” around week 23. My doctor and a surgeon thought it was a hernia, but an ultrasound showed it’s varicose veins. Crazy, right? For many weeks before, I thought it was round ligament pain.
Looking forward to more posts about your pregnancy! You and your bump are adorable :)

Reply

cleaneatingchelsey March 26, 2013 at 7:25 am

That’s so weird! Were the varicose veins not visible?

Reply

Angie @ Pint of Goals March 26, 2013 at 8:19 am

Oh they are visible, but in a different way than how they show up on your legs. The good thing is that they go away right after birth (unlike the ones on your legs which sometimes never leave). It’s just uncomfortable - lots of pressure :( Exercise seems to be the only relief, so luckily I can still do cardio classes and use the elliptical. Oh the things no one tells you before you become pregnant!

Tine March 26, 2013 at 7:02 am

Auch, that stomach bug wasn’t very welcome! Hope you feel better now!
I’m currently 29 weeks pregnant from a girl. I really spent the whole time from week 6 till week 16 on the couch. I felt I was continu sitting on a boat on a rough sea. I started moaning and gagging when I opened the fridge and even the smell of our usual handsoap made me sick. I had days that I couldn’t stand the odor from my boyfriend! Damn, it was pretty hard. But I felt better since week 16 and now I feel great.
And the back pain: it hurts so much… The best way to avoid it here is to move a lot. A lot of laying and sitting = back pain alarm! A cherry stone pillow provides some relief, but not always. I guess we have to go trough that!

Oh, and what a cute little bump! Enjoy! ;)
I’m usually a stomach-sleeper, and damn, I miss that! I’m really fighting in bed with my still growing belly!

Enjoy your pregnancy! Will read your blog through your adventure too!

I hope eating returns to somewhat regular for you and hope the second trimester brings feeling better! I am entering my third trimester tomorrow and am feeling the fatigue again bad, haha! I do have back pain now too with this bump growing lots in front, I am sure my last two months are going to be rough, but just excited for him to get here!

You look adorable! Love the crib you guys picked! We got a white crib too and we love it!

My massage therapist said the massages would help as well as a few stretches that he showed me to do. I’m vowing to do them religiously!! I’m also going to get adjusted by my chiropractor today too - hopefully that helps as well. The husband’s cousin is also a labor and delivery nurse, and she said it won’t last forever. I’m hoping she’s right!!!

Everyone asks me what my cravings are and I tell them in my first trimester I didn’t really crave anything…I just hated ALL food except for XXXX. “XXXX” usually ended up being something HORRIBLE for me like a cheeseburger, potato chips, or fries…but I think that’s normal. Crappy food is still better than no food!

I’m bad about putting on lotion too but I’ve started to make it a habit to put it on after every shower. I have it right there next to my towels so I remember. I use Cocoa Butter and so far so good!

Also, don’t pity your hubby too much - remember, he did this to you! Ha!

Glad you’re doing well and can’t wait to hear more updates!

You and I are practically pregnancy twins ourselves - I am due September 29th with di di twins too! Congratulations to you and your husband! I’ve had some heinous round ligament pain too, my midwife suggests warm compresses. I’ve heard that lukewarm baths can do wonders, too. Last week my lower back was feeling like a hot mess too, but then I did prenatal yoga for the first time and that seems to have helped a lot.

I wish you a really happy, healthy pregnancy!

Twin mom here. I had round ligament pain in the first trimester, but it wasn’t as bad as what you’re describing. Ouch!! Mine went away almost entirely by the second trimester, so I hope yours will be ending soon! Also, don’t fret about weight gain or loss. As long as your doctor is happy with what you’ve gained, and the babies are thriving, you’re doing awesome! I only gained 29lbs with my twins and went 38 weeks 4 days and the babies were 6lbs 3oz and 6lbs 7oz. Every woman is different! That being said, eat what you can keep down while you’re in the thick of nausea, even if it’s crappy chips. At least it’s calories! You’ll balance it out soon once you’re feeling better. I love following along your pregnancy! Twins are so, so wonderful.

I’m glad everything is ok. I did weekly chiropractor trips for the end of both of my last two pregnancies, to make sure everything was lined up, so the baby could get out easily. Not sure if it made a difference, both were fairly easy natural births (unmedicated). I DID look forward to the weekly visits.

Try not to worry about the weight issue. I didn’t really start gaining until week 16 or so (I couldn’t keep anything down and the thought of food repulsed me) which was funny because I looked 9 months pregnant at that point! I’m am glad you are doing okay and I have sent a quick prayer up for you for a safe pregnancy. I love the picture because your smile is so very genuine and happy! Cherish this exciting time of your life!

With my first I craved oranges and citrus. With my second I craved and ate red meat (had been vegan and returned to vegan post partum). With my third I was sick every day from 14 weeks onwards. However I was tandum nursing and had two kids in diapers still, so I think the exhaustion had something to do with the nausea. All I could eat for the second and third trimesters was peanut butter. Eat what your body wants you to eat, when your stomach says you can eat, so that you can put on some weight for those babies.

Reply

cleaneatingchelsey March 26, 2013 at 6:10 pm

That’s so funny about the meat. I have had a few meat cravings, but not too many so far. I’m sure taking care of two little ones contributed to you feeling exhausted! My mom has said the pregnancy where she felt her most exhausted was with my brother - she had a 3 and 5 year old running around!

Love you little bump! It will really start to take off in the next few weeks! I’m currently 24 weeks pregnant with boy/girl twins and have only had a little bit of round ligament pain. I’m no doctor but I’d say the intense pain you had that brought you to the hospital was most def. a stomach bug. I’ve never heard round ligament pain getting THAT bad. If you’ve already had the round ligament pain now, you’ll probably have it for a few more weeks. My biggest growth spurt so far where my belly went from a bump to a balloon was about 17/18 weeks to 20 weeks. So get excited, lots of growth ahead. And as soon as you start feeling better to eat, eat UP! Even if all you can handle is junk food right now, eat it!!!! Eat high calorie foods like milkshakes to quickly up the weight that you lost. Those babies needs sooo much more nutrients that you realize! :) So excited to follow your journey!

I’m glad to hear that everything is ok after your scare. Twin pregnanciesare definitely scary for sure. I’m currently 35 weeks with boy/girl twins. I was lucky that I never had any morning sickness, but I did have a lot of back pain around 24 weeks. Also around that time I was getting numbness in my left leg at night, which is the side I was told to sleep on. I figured it was just one of the perks that came with a twin pregnancy but after a few days, I saw a prenatal chiropractor and the numbness was gone that night! I started having ligament pain in the 3rd trimester and man is it bad. It freaked me out at first because it feels like sharp pain so I thought there had to be something wrong. Turned out that’s all it was.

Reply

cleaneatingchelsey March 26, 2013 at 6:14 pm

Yay for making it to 35 weeks already!!! There are so many twin mamas to be reading - that makes me so happy! I just went and saw my chiropractor today and he said part of the pain is from everything starting to press on my intestines too. Fantastic. ;)

I am officially 18 weeks today and can tell you that I just JUST started eating more veggies. I ate cinnamon raisin toast w cheddar and potato chips for dinner for 2 weeks straight. .. and choked down smoothies and fresh juice (apple/beet and carrot) during the days so I didn’t feel bad. Not to worry at all.
Pasta and pizza type food are about all I really want theses days and as long as you take your prenatal you are ok!

Terrible thought but my husband says- hey! there are people out there who are on drugs, and or don’t even know they are pregnant and their babies are fine LOL

When I was 20 weeks along with my first child, I woke up with such debilitating pain in my right side that the Dr.’s in emergency suspected that I had appendicitis. After undergoing surgery to remove the appendix (which was healthy and showed no signs of problems), the pain remained (plus the added discomfort of a surgical incision). A couple of months later my physiotherapist came to the conclusion that it was likely round ligament pain. Hang in there, all the pain and discomfort is worth it. My daughter is now 10 and the only memory of the experience is the scar on my belly from the surgery.

Reply

cleaneatingchelsey March 26, 2013 at 6:15 pm

That’s crazy! I actually convinced myself last week that I had a plethora of illnesses. Appendicitis, Gallstones, Kidney infection - you name it, I “had” it. Of course, all of these conclusions were made when I was waking up in the middle of the night with nothing else to do. ;) So I’m a little bit of a hypochondriac.

Not much ligament pain, but lots of other pain! haha - I had BAD heartburn almost from day one that didn’t let up until the babes came out….My twins were my only pregnancy so I can’t say what a singleton would feel like, but from what I’ve heard, twin pregnancy is SO different. I really didn’t feel like I had much of a second trimester - I think I went straight from first to third in a matter of a couple weeks! And I agree with the others - eat whatever you can eat at this point. Those peanuts need calories! I went to 38 weeks on the nose and my kids were 7 lbs 5 oz and 8 lbs 3 oz! ;)

Yeah, I have been wanting to talk to twin mamas because sometimes when I ask questions people who have singletons look at me like I’m crazy and they have no idea what I’m talking about. ha! Those were some BIG babies!!!! I love it! I want big juicy fat babies when they come out. Were you ever on bed rest at all?

Oh man, I am so happy all is ok with you and the babies!

I am 35 weeks pregnant with a boy and man has eating been tough for me! I had food aversions and lost a bunch of weight in the first trimester, then felt a bit better in the 2nd. My husband however misses his veggies, since I can not stand the smell of them cooked! I did not realize the food aversions could come back in the third trimester though, but for me they are not as consistent as the first. Also I have never been so consistently tired in my life as I have in the last 3 weeks, feel so guilty that I can not seem to get more done!

I had back pain in the beginning to, which has gone away, luckily. Stretching my hips and hamstrings made all the difference in the world to my pain. Good luck with everything!

haha I’m sure my husband misses home cooked meals but I just can’t do it!! Don’t feel bad for being tired - rest up and don’t push yourself!

You are such a cute pregnant lady! I love hearing how it’s all going so far- but I’m sorry about the not feeling good and food aversions! I’ve been dealing with food aversions for a bit now myself due to intestinal issues and the things I was able to keep down are sweet potatoes, white rice, Udi’s bagels, frozen applesauce and cream of rice cereal. Maybe some of those will help you too! And that does sound like a very scary experience but I’m so glad everything is ok and that you’re feeling better!

cleaneatingchelsey March 26, 2013 at 6:21 pm

Thanks - applesauce has been good for me too as has udi’s hamburger buns topped with strawberry jam. Whatever works!

Congrats. I am a fellow blog follower ( hope that’s not creepy) I am also pregnant with twins. I am currently 34 weeks with faternal twins. A boy and a girl. I had bad morning sickness the first trimester and once I hit about 16 weeks everything looked so yummy. I gained 8 pounds in two weeks. Crazy. The weight gain has all evened out. Currently in my 3rd trimester the lack of appetite has kicked in again but I try to just snack on things that I find appeleaing whatever that may be. Both twins are currently over 4 pounds each. I wish the best for you. The thing I can say that has helped me get this far is just realizing my limits. Just taking it easy and not trying to push myself when I’m tired or have some pains. I wish you the best. Being pregnant with twins is pretty amazing!

Yay for another twin mama! I’m hoping I go to a doctor’s appointment and they say “woah, you gained like 10 pounds this month!” That would be the best news ever. :) I have definitely been taking it easy for me - I have felt kind of lazy, but I don’t want to push it if I’m not feeling well. Good advice!

Kathy March 26, 2013 at 1:09 pm

Sorry you had to go through that! The early weeks of pregnancy are worrisome enough, without all of that. As far as the back pain, my back actually hurt worse during the first trimester than it does now (at 38 weeks). But maybe that’s because my giant belly is stealing the show. ;) Also, I only threw up once from morning sickness and it was when I hit 14 weeks. Don’t know if that’s really “regressing” but I did think it was strange. You’re looking great!

You are so lucky to have the insurance cover your massages - that is going to be a lifesaver! Your baby bump is adorable, but so sorry to hear about your stomach flu :(

Wow, that must have been so scary for you. :( I can’t imagine. I think all pregnant women worry about miscarrying, and then to have symptoms like that, I would have been out of my mind. Thank the Lord that everything is OK! I’ll be praying for you and your babies! :)

Glad to hear everything ended up ok. I just had twin boys 2 wks ago-enjoy every second of your pregnancy. You will miss it! Don’t worry about the weight gain. I had a few doctors that were getting on my case (I only gained around 15lbs) about not gaining enough and finally one who said “listen, we aren’t used to pregnant women taking care of themselves, you’ve stayed active and are eating ridiculously healthy-the babies are fine, you’re fine.”
I ended up going early (33 wks) and have been told countless amount of times its because of how healthy I was that my boys are as healthy as they are now! Enjoy the process!!!!!

Yay for another twin mama! I’m glad to hear the boys are doing so well after coming early. Did they have to spend any time in the NICU? My goddaughter was born at 32-33 weeks and was in the NICU for only a few weeks. Pretty good! She’s a fighter!

Congratulations! I am a friend of Kim’s and I had twin girls. They were 17 days early. I had five children and they were the healthiest ones. Not even jaundiced. When you are carrying twins the symptoms are double. I had the ligament issue and a lot of headaches. It was all from all the extra hormones. If you have any questions, please e-mail me. I would love to share stories.
Also, believe it or not I do not have one stretch mark and Courtney weighed 6.9 lbs and Camryn wa 7.2 lbs. word of advise. Rest when you get tired. No sense fighting it and your body is telling you that you need the rest.

Congratulations on your pregnancy! I have four kids and the youngest two are twins. I didn’t have severe round ligament pain but the pain I did have scared me because it wasn’t anything I had ever experienced with my first two pregnancies. I don’t know that there is really anything you can do but get used to it, sorry.I also was super nauseous which was a thing I had skipped with my single babies, this started in my second trimester. My twins are seven now so my memory is a little fuzzy, sorry I’m not more helpful. Congrats again! :-)

Hi Chels, its Lindsay as in ‘lindsayann’, twin mamma to Grayson and William! You’re too cute!!! And oh, btw, your twin bump for 13 weeks is tony, don’t sweat it! Eat up baby, you really want to gain NOW, AS IN YESTERDAY. It’s much harder later…and if you wanna go full term, which I know you do…gaining that 45+ pds is important and increases your odds big.time of doing so!

You can do it! Hope you’re now feeling ALL better!!!

cleaneatingchelsey March 27, 2013 at 7:30 pm

Oh believe me, I KNOW! It’s extremely frustrating to me that I haven’t gained any weight. Even with the weeks that I was able to eat and eat and eat, I couldn’t believe that weight kept coming off! Doesn’t make sense to me. Of all the times I WANT to gain weight, i can’t do it!

Madeline @ Food Fitness and Family March 26, 2013 at 8:08 pm

I lost 15+ pounds in my first trimester (I had hyperemesis). My OB explained to me that the baby took every single bit of nutrition I could keep down and I would just suffer. I think the weight loss at this point is ok.

I’m sorry you had a scare. That has to be awful!

It’s nice to hear that instead of people telling me I need to gain gain gain! I’m TRYING! Right now, these babes are little parasites. ;) They’ll take anything from me - and that’s fine! They’re growing right on track, so that’s all that matters!

Sorry you had to go through with the catheter crap. I had to go to the ER for the same thing and they said they were going to have to put one in me. I cried and told my husband I had to call my mom (I’m a big baby, I know! LOL) and told the nurse to hold off for a few. I asked them why I needed one and they said because my bladder needed to be full. Well, my mom being the brilliant woman that she is asked why I couldn’t just drink a lot of water and do an U/S that way. Luckily, they went for it and it worked (although I had to pee REALLY bad afterwards). So, just a heads up if you ever encounter someone else that has to go through this.
