return of the hunger beast

April 10, 2013

So umm… maybe I don’t have to be worried about gaining weight anymore. Today was the day where I COULD NOT stop eating to save my life. I was so stinking hungry it wasn’t even funny. I woke up starving (typical) and even went to the great length of not washing my hair (aaand the fact that I was out of shampoo and conditioner) so I could eat breakfast sooner.

Breakfast – 6:00 AM

January 29, 2013 006

Okay, so breakfast was kind of similar to this. Take away the scrambled eggs and insert two hardboiled eggs instead.

Oh, and while we’re talking hardboiled, can someone tell me if there is some sort of secret trick to peeling those bad boys? I’ve always been pretty  horrible at it (seriously – ask my bestie). It takes me like ten minutes to peel one, mainly because I can’t peel the shell off in a clean swoop. There’s always a zillion tiny pieces that I peel instead. What gives?!

Snacks – 8:15 AM

April 10, 2013 006

I packed a bunch of snacks to eat throughout the day (this plus three Larabar mini’s). By 8:15 I had already demolished the Chobani as well as a Larabar. I couldn’t believe I was legitimately hungry two hours after breakfast.

Lunch – 11:15 AM

April 10, 2013 005
I’m also surprised that with the amount of dairy I ate today, my stomach didn’t give me any trouble. Maybe these babies have given me a stomach of steel or something, but me + loads of dairy never bodes well. Between this and the yogurt (and the sour cream with dinner), I thought for sure I would have a stomachache. I type that as I sit here with a headache though. Oh well – give and take. This frozen meal was delicious though! It was about all I had in our fridge/freezer that could have made a suitable lunch.

I also ate the apple and another mini Larabar.

Later on in the afternoon, I ate the applesauce as well as another mini Larabar. I was unstoppable!

After school, I stopped by my sister’s house to pick up some things from my mom. She was nice enough to pick me up some shampoo and conditioner today (she does hair so she gets it cheaper) ad well as some adorable outfits for the girls. Plus, I enjoyed Aubrey’s new response to a few questions.

Mom: Aubrey, what’s Aunt Chelsey having?
Aubrey: Babies!
Mom: How many!?
Aubrey: (holds up fingers) TWO!

It’s adorable – I love that kid.

Snack – 4:30 PM

April 10, 2013 009

Still starving when I got home, I wanted to eat a little snack before I dusted the house, did some laundry, and did a yoga video. Unfortunately there were only like four chips left in this bag. I was upset and decided to just hold out until dinner instead of scavenging to find something else to eat.

Dinner – 6:00 PM

April 10, 2013 011
Dinner TOTALLY hit the spot. All I could think about all day were tacos (with a lot of sour cream – what’s with the dairy cravings!?). I loaded them up with beans, avocado, lettuce, pico, and sour cream. I had this plate…. x 2. Ummm, yeah. I can honestly say I am now finally satisfied for the first time today. Apparently my body just needed a lot more food than usual!

I can’t see myself eating a snack tonight, but if I do get hungry again, it’ll be cereal for me!

Question: When was your last hungry beast day?

The secret to hard-boiled eggs is to run them under cold water after they’re done cooking, then peel them as soon as you can stand to touch them!

Jennifer April 10, 2013 at 7:12 pm

Use a spoon to peel eggs. Crack it enough to get the spoon under the shell, and then just run the spoon around removing the shell. Found this random video lol

Boil the eggs with baking soda next time. :)
OR put the hard boiled egg in the microwave for 20 seconds, remove it, let cool, then peel.

I peel the eggs while they are still warm (from boiling) and never have trouble peeling them. Maybe it’s the heat?? I don’t remember my last starving day, but I will say those days drive me crazy. I can’t eat at work and the day dragsss when I’m hungry!

After boiling the eggs, submerge them in a bowl of ICE water! It helps the shell come off easier :)

I agree with the baking soda!!! Try 2tbs. Plus before you start your egg peeling, try cracking the egg on the top and bottom first. Start peeling from which ever end has the biggest air pocket.
Hope this helps you!!!

Here’s what works for me: Put the eggs in water, turn on the burner, and once they are boiling, turn it off. Leave the eggs in the water for ten minutes. Drain the water and add ice and cold water. Peel after they are cool. Good luck!
As for being hungry, I couldn’t believe how intense my hunger was during the first trimester. When I got hungry, I needed to eat IMMEDIATELY once I felt a hunger pang. I’m also a teacher and kept a drawer of snacks: mixed nuts, granola bars, and bags of airplane pretzels. For me it went away though (I’m 31 weeks) and I feel like I’m eating as I did pre-pregnancy.

Lots of calories & no exercise- what a different experience that was from

Unfortunately now I still have tons of hungry beast days- feels like most
Days I eat all day long- never more than 2 hrs between eating times.
Not sure if its what I’m eating but it is a pain sometimes. It is nothing like
pregnancy hunger though- that feels like you haven’t put anything in your
stomach in ages- I remember waking at midnight & HAVING to eat something-
Would have bowl of Cheerios :)
So nice to hear you enjoying this magical time!

Congratulations on your twins! I just had twins myself 4 months ago and dairy was the key to keeping myself full. And I agree with the comment above that mentions Dr. Luke’s book - it was the only pregnancy book that I felt really specifically addressed twin pregnancy. I followed her weight gain and nutritional suggestions and my twins were born at healthy weights (6,5 & 6,13) at 38 weeks. Best of luck with your pregnancy!

My trick to peeling eggs is to put them in really cold water the second I take them off the stove. Leave them in there for a minute or so and peel. Also, it helps if you get that little film that surrounds the egg off. You want them to feel slippery when you’re peeling them - if they feel kind of rubbery then it meals you have to break through that film.

Kristy @ Southern In Law April 10, 2013 at 10:25 pm

Okay this is going to sound REALLY weird - but the easiest way to peel boiled eggs is to take a piece of the top of the egg (just bang the end down on the counter and peel a piece off at the tip) and then blow into that hole - it loosens the shell and you can peel it really easily!

My last hungry beast day was on Monday! I’d walked in the morning then cleaned the whole house and then I’d helped my Mom move things from upstairs to outside (heavy furniture and boxes) and it seemed like my body just needed more food - once I’d given it what it wanted, it let me be, but by gosh was I hungry!

I always put the eggs in the water and start them to boil, once I have a rolling boil, I let them cook for about 11 mins, then I remove them from the burner and empty the hot water and let the cold water run over them. I fill the pot with ice cold water and I let them sit while I do other things. Then I tap them lightly on a papertowel to get the break started. I always have good luck. If your eggs are TOO fresh, they will peel harder also.

I see some people already posted my tip to peeling eggs, but I’ll join in the fun anyway :-) I’m a hard boiled egg fiend. The trick is to first start with old eggs. Fresh eggs don’t peel as well. Then run them under cold water as soon as they are done and peel them asap. The cold water cools them down pretty quickly. Bimbamboom done!

Have you ever tried steaming your eggs vs. boiling them in water? It totally works and you don’t have any cracked eggs in the end and they are MUCH easier to peel. Put water in the bottom of the pot, add a veggie steamer basket, put your eggs in the basket (you can pile them up to the top), and turn the stove on high. Once the water starts to boil, put a lid on and steam for 15 mins. Take them off the heat and run cold water over the eggs (I leave them in the pot and put it in the sink) for a minute or two. Then put them in the fridge. They peel SO much easier and quicker than boiling. I haven’t boiled an egg since trying this method. Good luck!! Glad you’re eating again!

Two things:
1. I’m training for a marathon so I FEEL YOU on being hungry 24/7. There is a running joke around my office now about my constant snacking. I bring at LEAST three pieces of fruit with me every day along with my lunch and usually some hummus and carrots as well. I’ve even started eating second breakfasts like a hobbit!
2. A tip from my pre-vegan days: baking soda in the water when you hardboil your eggs. Makes a HUGE difference.
Okay, three things.
3. Babies!!!

Missy April 11, 2013 at 12:02 pm

There are a bunch of tips out there for eggs… but my most valued is that “older” eggs boil up better. The fresher the egg, the harder it is to peel. So when I buy the eggs I let them hang out a while before I boil them.

Also if you start the crack at the bottom there is usually a pocket of air there and it helps you to get under the membrane.

(OOps sorry I just said membrane. )

I’m not sure if anyone has already said this, but it’s common for lactose intolerance to go away during pregnancy. Lactase production in the body is controlled by hormones, so it kind of makes sense that it changes during pregnancy.

At first, I was petrified to eat dairy during pregnancy, but I had zero problems. It was crazy! Then literally the day after I had Wyatt, I had a milkshake and umm learned the hard way that my strong tummy was short-lived.

I can also eat diary product when I wasn’t able to before. My doctor said that it is normal for your stomach to be able to handle things while pregnant that you cannot normally.

If your eggs are really fresh, like the kind you go pluck out from under your chicken, they do not peel very well. They have to get a little older, like the ones you buy in the grocery store. If you put salt (a couple tsps) in the water while you are boiling your eggs, it helps them peel easier.

Reply

deb thomas April 11, 2013 at 1:51 pm

sometimes you will still get an egg that just does not want to go down without a fight.

Ok I haven’t read *all* of the above comments, so sorry if it’s there somewhere - but I’ve read and experienced that the fresher the egg, the harder it is to peel. I use a lot of eggs, so I usually just boil the ones that are in the oldest carton I have (which is usually just a week or 10 days older than the newer one). I know it sounds crazy but I’m pretty sure it’s true. I’m also going to try the vinegar thing!
