the twins: 25 weeks

June 18, 2013

I am such a scatter brain! I completely forgot to announce the winner of the Chic Pipsqueak giveaway on Friday. Thank you all for being so patient – the winner of the giveaway (using a random number generator) is #2, Emily! Emily is due with her first little girl in August, so I’m sure she will have a ball picking out some accessories! Please email me, Emily, so I can get your information along to Kjirsten!

I feel like a lot of mamas with multiples have been telling me along the way – just wait for week 24-28. You grow exponentially and you will really start to feel uncomfortable. Well, umm… they were right! I can’t tell you how many times I heard this week “you are HUGE!” and “Oh my goodness, you look like you’ve grown so much since last week!”. True story, and I don’t take offense to any of the statements. My belly is starting to take over and I just laugh when I think about how much longer I have left.

Each baby girl should be a good two pounds by now, maybe a little less, based on my ultrasound last week.

Weight Gained: No clue – I’m obviously on the upside and not losing, I can tell you that!

Symptoms: Oh a few fun symptoms have shown their face in the last week, making it a fun one for sure.

  • Acid Reflux – ew ew ew ew ew. and OW! I’m really hating this one, but since everything is squished, I can see why it’s happening. Every single night when I go to bed, regardless of when I eat last, I get horrible reflux. Thankfully I haven’t been feeling heartburn too badly. However, it has been so bad that I have felt like I was going to throw up in my mouth. You’re welcome for that.
  • Upset Stomach/Queasy – I don’t know if this was pregnancy related or just something I ate that I shouldn’t have (more likely), but all day Friday and Saturday I just felt so blah. My stomach was so off and everything I ate was making me feel sick. Thankfully that has passed and I’m feeling a lot better now.
  • Hip/Back Pain – The back pain is during the day, and the hip pain is when I wake up in the morning. Apparently I need to turn over to my other side more often throughout the night because I have been waking up with my hips hurting a lot.
  • Contractions – My worst day was Saturday, and it almost made me nervous. I was pretty active/on my feet on Friday, and on Saturday when I was cleaning I was having contractions. They were pretty consistent (I think I counted 4 in a 45 minute period or so?) so I decided to quit cleaning and relax on the couch for the rest of the day. That definitely helped and they disappeared. If I had counted 6 in an hour, I would have called my doctor, but since they went away and haven’t been back since, I’m good.

Movement: All day, every day!

Food Cravings: Food wasn’t too appealing this past week – I mainly ate it because I had to. Sweets were definitely not what I wanted either (except for the gluten free cupcakes my aunt made on Sunday).

Food Aversions: No real aversions!

Sleep: I’m still sleeping pretty well. On Sunday night I slept horribly and woke up at 5:00 starving, but other than that it’s been good!

Stretch Marks? None. ::knock on wood:: But I have noticed I’m starting to get a linea nigra on my stomach. It’s really really faint right now. I was hoping I would get out of that one!

Miss Anything? Sleeping on my stomach. I am such a stomach sleeper in the summer, and I also love sprawling out with a good book while laying on my stomach. I miss it! I also miss being able to get up easily. ;) It’s been more of a struggle these days.

Looking forward to: My first baby shower on Sunday! My mom, bestie, and sister have been planning it for a few months now. My bestie REALLY stepped up and kind of took it over about a month ago when things were really crazy with my dad. I know it took a huge weight off my mom’s shoulders so she didn’t have to worry about too much.

I’m also weirdly looking forward to my glucose test on Friday. I have no clue why – maybe because I want to see what is really so bad about that drink?

Our babymoon! We can’t wait for Mackinac Island in a few weeks. And of course, Charlie can’t wait for his Uncle Matthew to come and spend time with him.

Belly Button in or out? Oh it’s all the way out by the end of the day when my stomach is stretched to its max. It cracks me up.

Happy or moody most of the time? This weekend I was pretty cranky. I feel bad because I know when I’m sad I tend to mask that and get snappy at the Husband. I was having a few sad days this weekend (more so Saturday than Sunday) and really missing my dad. Other than that, I think I was pretty happy. Okay okay, there was also an emotional breakdown last night.

New Baby Items: We got our dresser for the nursery this weekend! We are so grateful to the Husband’s aunt and uncle who gifted it to us. The Husband’s uncle owns a few business, and one of them is a painting business. They just started restoring furniture. A few months ago John’s aunt told us they received a dresser/changing table that they could refinish and gift to us for the girls. It is PERFECT! I am so glad we went this route because we could customize it. We just had the dresser match the cribs. When John and my brother in law brought it home Sunday night, They were adamant about it not fitting in between the cribs. I swore up and down that it would fit because I measured about twenty thousand times. It does fit – but only with about 1/8 inch on each side. It’s a tight fit! I just shopped for the hardware – I bought two fun knobs for the right side, and for the drawer pulls I ordered a simple satin nickel pull from Lowes.

photo (28)

Over the next few weeks I want to get some shelves for above the dresser. They have white ones from IKEA that are relatively cheap and slim, so I’m thinking about three of those!

Exercise: I think I’ve hit my exercise limit in this pregnancy. I feel like a bum sometimes, but I have to keep reminding myself that a pregnancy with multiples is SO much different than a singleton pregnancy. I don’t want to take the risk and do anything that could potentially harm the girls. I have plenty of time for exercise in a few months (well, sort of ;) ).  Other than short walks, I don’t think much else is going to be happening in the exercise department over the next few months. I’ve been feeling incredibly uncomfortable on my longer walks, so I have definitely scaled it back a lot. I’ve still been walking a little bit because I need Charlie to get exercise, but they usually only last 20-25 minutes now. I’ve been trying my hardest to not be on my feet for more than a half hour at a time as well.

Questions for mamas: Do you have any words of advice for my oh so wonderful new symptoms that have popped up? :)

You look SO DAMN CUTE!!!!!! Love the bump! Adorable!!!

The glucose drink was not bad at all! I saw so many people complaining and saying it was gross, I had the orange drink and thought it was good, lol! Good luck on your test!

YAY for a baby shower! I know that shower is going to be beautiful, how sweet of your friend to really step up and help out too <3

Yes, carrying twins is way more work and exercise would be harder and you would have to be safer for sure, smart on your part for sure girl!

I just adore ya! Happy Tuesday love!

I just thought it tasted like orange hi-c! It wasn’t bad at all, except for the fact that it gave me a headache since I had to fast!

Lol I couldn’t help but laugh at the fact that you’re looking forward to the glucose test because I’ve got pretty much the same mentality. Given my huge sweet tooth, I’d like to believe that there’s no sugary concoction that I can’t handle

You look amazing! Also, I remember missing laying on my stomach so badly. After I got home from the hospital I was giddy that I could sleep belly down again. It’s as great as you remember ;)

Also, the glucose drink isn’t all terrible tasting, just super sweet. It’s how it can make you FEEL that sucks. That being said, most people don’t even notice it. I just had an unfortunate experience ;) Good luck!

Oh my gosh, I can’t WAIT! The other night as we were going to bed, John said, “aaah, I think I”ll sleep on my stomach tonight.” It took everything in me not to smother him with a pillow. ;)

You’re looking awesome! Aren’t those comments great? People sometimes don’t think before they say things.
I had minor heartburn throughout most of my pregnancy and probably went through a big bottle of berry-flavored Tums. Just one tablet would kick it for me.
My hips have also started to bother me at night. I wake up to it aching and flip over. I wish I had a solution to this too, but I think it’s just the weight of the uterus pulling and putting pressure on the bottom hip.
I didn’t think the glucose test was that bad, but if you can take the test in the morning before eating a normal day’s worth of food, I would. Mine was in the late afternoon, and I failed! Then I had to take the three-hour test - luckily I passed that.

Reply

cleaneatingchelsey June 23, 2013 at 5:56 pm

Mine was a 2 hour test - I think they do that so they can help to avoid people having to take the 3 hour one. Longest two hours EVER!!!

Make sure you’re drinking lots of water too. That will help settle down contractions along with rest. The glucose drink is not bad at all. I was really nervous about it, but it was no big deal. Just tasted like flat orange soda. My advice is to just drink it down quickly….no need to drag it out. Good luck and have fun seeing the babies.

I am only a couple weeks behind you , just turned 23 weeks today, my number one symptom so far has been itchiness and hive like rashes through this pregnancy. I too have noticed a big increase it belly size this past week. My husband keeps saying, “I can’t wait until your belly is huge!” uh thanks hun lol!! Where did you end up finding the dresser, I’ve been looking all over for a nice one and really haven’t found any that I like!

Reply

cleaneatingchelsey June 18, 2013 at 8:41 am

Itchiness? Yuck! I would hate that!

The Husband’s aunt and uncle refinished the dresser for us - they found it. I explained it above! :)

Not a mommy (yet), but I know when dear cousin had her second her hips were really sore. Her OB recommended doing hip flexor stretches (easily googled). She said they worked wonders..
A little one I used to care for’s Mama had horrible acid reflux when she was pregnant, she had always said that by sleeping with her upper body reclined but not flat used to prevent the majority of her symptoms.

You look adorable, definitely rockin’ the bump ;)

I picked the orange flavor for the glucose drink, they had like 5 choices at my hospital. It was not too bad.
I love that dresser - I like the design and the white for the furniture :)

Acid reflux is NO fun. I noticed that eating smaller amounts and sitting upright or standing after I ate for awhile helped. And the lovely little linea nigra… I thought I was going to get out of that one too, but it showed its little self right around 25ish weeks, and I still have it a bit. I’ve read it will often times stay until you’re done breastfeeding. Lovely, right? You are looking adorable Chels!

I had the glucose test about a month ago, not that bad. Just towards the end of the drink it gets harder to swallow it down due to how sweet it is. The hip pain is nothing new to me either. I’m 31 weeks with a singleton (as you call them, :) ) and I have had several hip pain that started when I was about 12 weeks and hasn’t let up. My OB says it’s just from the relaxin going through the joints in order to make room for growth, but boy it isn’t fun. I sleep with 3 pillows at night and that seems to help, 1 for my head, 1 for my back and 1 to support the belly. Poor hubby-ha! Also, don’t feel like a bum-you need to do what’s best for baby girls! Getting back into shape can happen after they are here, priority number 1 is growing healthy babies and you have that right! :)

“They” say that bad acid reflux means the baby(ies) are going to have a lot of hair! I didn’t believe it until my good friend just had a baby- I sat next to her at work through her whole pregnancy so I know how bad her reflux was, and sure enough her little one came out with more hair than I have EVER seen on a baby!

Reply

Just discovered your great blog and this is my first comment!

I have one child and recall hitting the third trimester mark and feeling blah in the food dept. I remember sour things like plain greek yogurt and berries tasting good. I also drank probably a few glasses of soy milk at night, and that helped the heartburn ( I couldn’t stand Tums, too chalky). I also slept at an incline, on my side (kind of took over the bed, but that’s what happens) :) .

Reply

cleaneatingchelsey June 18, 2013 at 2:39 pm

Welcome Megan! The Husband already gets like 6 inches of space to get comfortable, the poor guy. ;)

Sour things tasted amazing in my first trimester - I’m wondering if that’ll make a comeback!

Reply

Megan June 18, 2013 at 3:40 pm

It may make a comeback! I don’t think I had any particular aversions in the third tri, I just had to keep my meals tiny and frequent due to shrinking tummy space.

Reply

cleaneatingchelsey June 18, 2013 at 2:37 pm

haha! It’s SO hard to tell - especially because it “feels” different with every different person. But when my ENTIRE stomach tightens up for a good period (at least 30 seconds) and then lets go. They don’t hurt at all (obviously they would feel different if it were the real thing). It was hard to distinguish that and when the girls roll around at first because my stomach tightens up then too, but not all over, just in the spot where they’re moving.

I’ve not had a baby, but I DO know acid reflux, heartburn, and indigestion all.too.well. Ug. Definitely elevate the head of your bed! Get a wedge cushion if you have to. Remain upright at least 20-30 minutes after eating. Apple Cider Vinegar works really well for me (waaaay better than Tums), but I don’t know if it’s safe for growing babies. If it is, go organic-Braggs-and water it down some. Mint tea is good for indigestion when you don’t have heartburn. Soothes tummies well. You are so adorable! I hope your symptoms get better this week!

Reply

Toni June 18, 2013 at 6:02 pm

Put a firm pillow between your knees at night, once your hip spread from the new weight, putting our knees together causes undue pressure on the hips.

Also, during my pregnancy she (Carlee, almost 4 now) had a full head of hair, and I had reflux so bad I was in agony every night! I bought another pillow and had to sleep propped up against the wall or headboard every night.

Hey Chelsey….
You’re getting there! I just gave birth to boy/girl twins on Thursday at 36 weeks…..it is so awesome! I somehow avoided a c-section, so we are all home (my little ones are tiny, but doing great!)

I am an avid exerciser, but felt very similarly to you during this pregnancy. I was on procardia since week 27 for contractions, so I really monitored my activity levels and would listen to my body once it started feeling off and the contractions became more frequent. Crazy thing is that my water broke only 24 hrs after stopping the meds!
I had terrible heartburn and rib pain the last 8 weeks or so of pregnancy. Unfortunately, it only got worse as the pregnancy progressed. I barely slept the last week I was so uncomfortable, had trouble eating much of anything. The wonderful thing is that as soon as I delivered the little guys, all of those symptoms were gone!
I have to say, I remarkably feel awesome….maybe because I felt so awful before?? And those two little adorable nuggets at the end of the rainbow make it so worth it:)
Good luck!

cleaneatingchelsey June 23, 2013 at 6:04 pm

Congratulations Lauren! I’ve been noticing a lot more contractions just in this past week or so - in fact, I was almost at the point of calling my doctor last night but I didn’t hit the 5-6 in an hour (they were coming every 15-20 minutes for a few hours), but they all of a sudden just stopped. I’ve been having a hard time though when I stand up because I feel like every time I stand up my belly tightens from the weight of it, so I have a hard time determining whether or not that’s a BH contraction or not!!

You’re making me too excited to meet my little ones - what did you name the babies?

I hear ya about the whole working out thing. I had twins 12 weeks ago so I felt your pain! My ob took me off work at 24 weeks ( that’s the norm in Canada for a multiple pregnancy) and he told me to take it easy and if I was out-and- about, keep it to an hour on my feet. He only wanted me to do prenatal yoga or swimming as exercise. It was a long 11 weeks, but I kept those babies in until 35 weeks!
Good luck with the rest of your “twin journey!” Those beautiful girls will be here and growing like weeds before you know it!

cleaneatingchelsey June 23, 2013 at 6:05 pm

That’s pretty much the approach I’m taking now. I only stand if I absolutely need to, and I’ve been trying to keep it to 30 minutes or less. Otherwise, I’m sitting or laying on my left side. It’s hard to get things done around the house, but I’ve been doing a 15 minute a day cleaning schedule that’s been working out great!

Congrats on the babies!
