30 weeks pregnant with twins

July 23, 2013

I hit the big 3-0 this weekend!!! Not in years, of course, I’m only 26 today. ;) I feel like 30 weeks is a huge milestone for some reason. I’m not going to lie – from here on out I’ll be thinking in terms of two week increments. 32, 34, 36 (fingers crossed!). It seems crazy that in a matter of a few weeks we’ll have our baby girls with us!

photo (44)

Almost every night when the Husband comes home from work, he looks at my belly and says “wowza, that’s a big belly”. Yes dear, yes it is.

Weight Gained: I had an appointment last Thursday, and I’m up to about 23 pounds gained. I only gained a little bit in the last few weeks, and I’m sure it went straight to these girls. It’s getting so hard to eat at this point – it’s either too hot or I have no room. I’m trying though!

Symptoms:

Contractions, contractions, contractions! Honestly, everything I do gives me contractions at this point. I’m full? Contractions. My bladder needs to be emptied? Contraction. Walking more than 50 feet? Contraction. ;) Obviously I am watching these like a hawk, and my doctor told me she would only be concerned if they become rhythmic. Otherwise, she told me it’s totally normal for me to be having SOOOOOO many Braxton Hicks Contractions at this point since I’m measuring just about full term (for a single baby). They typically go away when I’m laying on the couch, but I even pull out a few when I’m laying around doing absolutely nothing!

I’m also starting to feel a lot of pressure right around my pubic bone. Baby A is super super low, so as she is growing, I’m definitely feeling it. It’s the worst in the morning (when my bladder is full) or when I try to get up from a position laying down (or trying to roll over in bed at night).

I’m also starting to get a bit swollen – not too bad though! My feet feel like sausages at the end of a long day, and my wedding rings no longer fit. I’m sad I don’t get to wear my pretty rings every day!

All of these “symptoms”, however, feel normal to me at this point. Last week when I went to my acupuncture appointment, he was asking me if I was feeling okay and I said yes. He then got more specific and asked if I was having back pain or slowed digestion or swollen feet (etc.) and I said yes. He looked at me like I was crazy, but I looked at HIM like he was crazy. Isn’t that part of the package deal at this point? ;) I feel like I’ve had it relatively easy thus far – I’m not complaining!

Movement: Always always always. These two are starting to get into a pattern. Early morning/late night is their party time (lucky me, right? ;) )

Food Cravings:  No cravings, per se. It’s so hard to actually want food when it’s a zillion degrees outside! I’ve been drinking like crazy though. Water is my best friend.

Food Aversions: Nothing.

Sleep: My sleep has been off for the last few days. I spent the weekend at my mom’s watching my childhood dog (he’s 14) while she was out of town. I was so paranoid that the dog was going to have an accident if I went too long without taking him out. Because of that, I went to bed late (for me) and woke up early. Not a good combination! I also had a late night on Friday when I went to that concert – I didn’t go to bed until 2! I can’t even remember the last time that happened!

Stretch Marks? My cousin thinks the marks I thought were stretch marks last week are just veins. In that case, we’re still stretch mark free over here!

Miss Anything? An entire wardrobe of clothes to choose from. I actually asked my mom for a few things that I can wear once the girls are born for my birthday because I am soooooo sick of wearing the same five outfits over and over again.

I’m also missing sleeping on my stomach still.

Looking forward to: These last few weeks of summer!

Belly Button in or out? Half in, half out!

Happy or moody most of the time? I only had one breakdown this past week. I had a really busy first part of the week last week, and by Wednesday night I was DONE for. I ended up sobbing on the couch crying about how I’m “so tired of not being able to do anything right now”. Of course that was just a weak moment. I’d lay on the couch for many more months if that meant healthy baby girls!

I also thought I would be kind of moody/sad about my birthday (my dad and I share/shared (???) a birthday) today, but I’ve actually been okay. Maybe that’s because I’m excellent about not thinking about things – but I’m sure it’ll hit me eventually.

New Baby Items: Not really anything new for the girls, but new for mama! I took advantage of Destination Maternity’s nursing sale (Buy 3 Get 1 Free through the end of the month!) yesterday. I had a coupon for $25 off that I wanted to cash in, so it turned out to be a pretty good deal. I got these two bras and two of these tanks. I’m in love with these bras by the way. I’m already wearing them constantly. I didn’t want to get any of the one that would be like a normal cup size because who knows what my chest is going to do when these two are born, but the two that I bought are super comfortable and I can see myself lounging around the house in them all the time.

Exercise: Washing dishes? Walking to the bathroom? Folding laundry? Yup… all exercise.

My goal for this week is to get MY hospital bag packed (the girls’ bag has been packed for weeks) and to get the Husband to put up a few shelves and to put up their name decals in their room.

Questions for mamas: What were your hospital bag essentials? What were items that you DIDN’T pack but wish you had?

I wish I had packed more warm clothing/socks! It was freezing in the rooms. Also extra hair ties, my own shampoo and conditioner, and lotion!

I’ve heard the rooms are freezing! I can’t imagine being cold right now (because I’m so flipping hot!) but if I get back to my normal self shortly after giving birth, I’ll be SO COLD!

Amariah July 28, 2013 at 12:18 am

I don’t know if you’re planning on a natural birth or not but if you get induced and if you’re planning on an epidural, the drugs make you cold. I was hot my whole pregnancy regardless of how cold it was and after I had my little guy, I was freezing and the nurses said it was due to the drugs. Just a little FYI for you :) Good luck!!!

Thanks Amariah!! I’m planning on doing whatever these little girls have in mind for me - right now they’re both breech, so it’s looking like a c-section at this point!

I still cannot believe that you are 30 weeks already! Baby girls will be here so soon. So glad you are feeling mostly good, too. I bet it’s hard already being full term size for a single baby and still having weeks left. So feeling mostly good is awesome. PS - smart move on the tops and bras. I didn’t do that at first after M and ended up having to purchase completely different things.

I guess I don’t know any different because this is my first pregnancy, so this feels “normal” to me!

You are way too freaking cute!! As for hospital bag - I bought a pair of VS button up pajamas (or Target, Walmart, whatever). It was fantastic for nursing and combatting the cold hospital room. Plus I felt cute when visitors came. I put it on with a nursing tank and wore it through my hospital stay :)

I also brought my hair dryer and make up. Call me vain but I liked looking pulled together in our hospital photos and showering felt AMAZING.

You look absolutely radiant!!!! Reading this made me miss the days (months) I was prego with my twin daughters! Now all three of my 5 year Ole’s will be starting kindergarten! ) : I used to love going to my OB to get measured! Loved knowing I had two gifts growing in me making me sooooo plump! The contractions just become part of your daily life and you get used to them.Take your makeup, hair dryer, whatever you want with you. I felt so good after delivery, I wanted to look good too. I am solo excited for you!
Don’t know if you have thought about this but when you come home with babies have two notebooks. Everytime the babies eat (how much & when) poo or peee you write down in their.
own notebook. It will get a little overwhelming so this will help you keep track.
Good luck, you will be a fabulous mommy!

there are some good apps that I think are much better than notebooks - the one I used was babyESP but I”m not sure it’s avilable anymore - but the cool thing was that I could update on my phone and sync to our tablet or DH’s phone… :)

Second, I totally brought make-up too (after the initial puffiness around my eyes went down that Tyler NEVER told me about. I was like “YOU LET ME TALK TO PEOPLE LOOKING LIKE THAT?!?” New mom hormones, much?! haha). I also stole his track pants to wear one day and it was glorious!!

Happy Birthday! I have been asking about the hospital bag question too and so far have got a few popular answers, exercise ball - for labour, slippers you can throw away after, pair of PJs with tank easy to nurse in, then your obvious essentials.

Great suggestions! I have those things on my list (well, except for the ball because I think my hospital has those).

Reply

haha! It is a basketball, that’s for sure. And I feel SOOOO lucky I’ve basically just gained in my belly. I’ve gotten “softer” everywhere else (my arms, legs, etc) because I haven’t worked out, but I haven’t really gained there. Woohoo!! I knock on wood every time I say that.

Looking amazing, Chels! Can’t believe you’re already 30 weeks… Sheesh! Hospital essentials? Underwear (that you don’t mind tossing), yoga pants, snacks, water bottle, and toiletries/make up/blow dryer. Some people could care less, but it made me feel SO much better to take a shower, put on a little mascara, and blow dry my hair. Other than those things, the hospital I was at did a really good job at providing everything else I may have needed.

And just to see how many times I can wish you a happy birthday today… Happy Birthday! Love you!

Reply

cleaneatingchelsey July 23, 2013 at 2:21 pm

Reply

Kathy July 23, 2013 at 10:18 am

Congrats on getting to 30 weeks! I’d recommend bringing music or movies as a distraction during labor and bringing layers to wear after labor. With the crazy hormones, I was overheating one moment and freezing with teeth chattering the next. Also I’d recommend bringing stuff to eat and drink for after giving birth. I was the thirstiest I had ever been and chugged a bunch of Gatorade plus some apple juice from the hospital. I’m sure your hospital will have food options ctor you but you might want to either eat what you like or make sure you have something that’s GF.

Reply

cleaneatingchelsey July 23, 2013 at 2:22 pm

Yeah I’ve definitely been nervous about the food situation. I don’t think they’ll have things like GF bread, so I’m going to bring a loaf and some peanut butter for those “emergency” snack times! :)

Happy Birthday, Chelsey <3
30 WEEKS!! Hooray for you and the girls! So glad that you are feeling well for the most part, that's a great blessing!…. You'll have more clothes to chose from in no time at all! It is such a joy when the day comes that you get to box up most of the maternity stuff and say hello to your old favorites!

What I wished I had—- a NIGHTLIGHT! (or two or three)! You are in a new surrounding and need at least a little light at night so you don't trip when you go to pick up your blessings. ** Also, especially as a nursing mom, a nightlight is a must!** I needed to see what he heck was going on down there so I could figure it out! The overhead light was waaaay to bright to sleep so we had to keep the hospital door open a crack; it let in all the super loud noises of vacuuming and banging doors and buzzers and carts going by. Couldn't get any restful sleep even though I was super exhausted. Also, I agree 100% with the make-up!

Reply

cleaneatingchelsey July 23, 2013 at 2:23 pm

Oh I definitely haven’t heard the nightlight suggestion yet!!

And amen on getting full fast. I can only imagine what having 2 in there would feel like to the stomach. Yowzers!

I had packed a ton of stuff to get through the child birth and we used none of it. haha so I guess don’t over pack is my advice? haha. but how can you not. yay 30 weeks

Reply

cleaneatingchelsey July 23, 2013 at 2:25 pm

I always overpack - but I’d rather have too many things than not enough!

Reply

Ashley July 23, 2013 at 12:02 pm

Try drinking water (lots & lots of it!). I know its hard because there’s no room, but staying super hydrated can help alleviate some of the contractions. Also, if you’re planning on breastfeeding its good to get in the habit of drinking copious amounts of water anyway because you’ll need it to produce enough milk for 2! Way to go Momma, you’re looking lovely as always!

Hospital bag, bring your own granny panties, haha! Seriously though! Well unless you are getting a c-section, then you will not need them! I was grateful I had my own since I had a vaginal delivery, so I had to wear them with pads!

Oh and bring snacks too!! <3

Reply

cleaneatingchelsey July 23, 2013 at 2:32 pm

Thanks lady! I’ve heard that the granny panties are good for a c section too because regular underwear irritates the incision. I’m not sure how the bleeding after a c-section compares to a vaginal delivery (like the timing of things - does it still start right away?), but I have heard that it’s normally not quite as bad because the doctor cleans out your uterus a little for you so you have less to shed.

Reply

Nico July 31, 2013 at 11:20 pm

I bled about equally after my C section and vaginal births. Also, they’ll give you mesh panties at the hospital to wear with the mungo pads they give you - grab a few extras of those to bring home for the first few days. That way you don’t ruin any of your own (not that you’d wear granny panties again - but you don’t need to go out any buy any specially)

Hi there! I love your blog and have really enjoyed following your pregnancy (even though I feel a little like a creep since I don’t know you personally but I love your recipies). I worked as a newborn hearing screener for a few years and can say a few things I think make a big difference (although I have never had a child of my own).
Making sure your girls are warm and wrapped tightly is the #1 thing-they will be 50x happier and sleepier if they have 3 to 4 layers on whenever possible. I know you said you packed thier bag already and I’m sure you have all those things but the little jumpers with the elastic bottoms?-a godsend for diaper changes. but they should be fully dressed under that jumper and then wrapped in a blanket (or two) the hospital will have blankets to swaddle them in. Use thier blankets rather than the nice ones you bought, you are going to be going through about 5-10 a day there so use thier endless supply until you leave. I always thought having a breastfeeding shield (blanket thing?) would be essential for me although I know lots of people arent shy about it. I just thought if all my family was there it would be nice to just put the sheild on rather than have everyone have to wait in the hallway/have to feed in front of everyone. Definitely bring something to do, you will be bored with daytime TV, I’m sure, and you are stuck in bed. Also a face mask to sleep in I thought would be nice because you’re nurse/doctor/hearing screener/registry/etc/etc/ are going to be walking into your room all night to check on you (this is where the partner is essential lol) Sorry this is such a long response, and again, I haven’t had a baby myself but these are the things I will pack for myself after my experience working with newborns. Good Luck!

I think most people have the essentials covered. My list was a little lengthier, as they make you stay 4-5 days in the hospital here in Australia!
Some others that people may not have mentioned: flip flops for the shower, your own pillow, breast feeding pillow and anything you want the nurses to show you (e.g.: pump), and some snacks/juice for afterwards.
Also, getting a little more real here…if you happen to have a natural delivery, a friend recommended to bring my own *soft* toilet paper, giant depends diapers (seriously), and some sort of laxative (again, seriously). :)
I think I packed and repacked my bag 5 times!!! So much fun.

Reply

cleaneatingchelsey July 23, 2013 at 5:30 pm

5 days for a vaginal delivery? That’s crazy!!! Here the hospital usually will provide you with these mesh panties with HUGE pads attached to them, as well as witch hazel pads to make that “area” feel better. They typically give out stool softeners as well. I definitely understand the soft toilet paper though! lol!

Lindsey July 23, 2013 at 5:33 pm

Chapstick, loungey stretchy pants for you, hair tie, brush, snacks that you like and drinks you like (allergy friendly is hard to get at the hospital!), sample toiletries so you can trash them at the hospital.

I packed super comfy PJ’s, personal essentials and something to snack on for AFTER you have baby. Giving birth makes you VERY hungry!!! That and if you have a long labor (mine was 15 hours start to finish) You don’t eat that whole time so you’re a bit hungry from that too. The first meal after I gave birth was AMAZING.. although it was hospital food I’m sure if I wasnt so hungry it wouldnt have been so amazing lol.

Happy birthday to you!! Gosh I feel like I procrastinated on packing my hospital bag. Definitely a must for me was stretchy yoga pants, big undies, a zip up hoodie, I had a couple super stretchy tops I used for nursing and slippers. Pretty much anything that makes you feel really comfortable. Plus I looooved the clif energy chews during labor. 30 is an exciting week to be at. So soon and you’ll meet the girl!

Congrats on 30 weeks!! I cannot imagine carrying twins! I was soooo uncomfortable the last month with only one baby, can’t imagine having two in there!!

Reply

Lindsey July 24, 2013 at 7:36 am

Less is more! One baby kept me busy so you pretty much won’t have time for anything - so don’t bring “entertainment” like some people say (magazine, book, iPod). Honestly, the only thing I needed was my toiletries (now that I think back the hospital actually provided toothbrushes, toothpaste, etc). They restocked if I ran short on anything and my husband was even able to shower and use their stuff with no problem. As for special pillows and clothes? Again, less is more. Just bring things that are comfortable and easy to nurse in. So excited for you!

At 37 weeks I went to an ultrasound to check on my son’s size with only my purse and summer clothes on me (and on public transport) and had NO hospital bag whatsoever as I thought I would be sent back home. Well, turned out he measured so small, they had to induce right away. I wished I had had my toothbrush and toiletries, and because the rooms really are freezing, socks, a sweater and snacks would have been fantastic.
Happy Birthday to you and all the best!

YAY! 30 weeks is such a great milestone. I am so happy for you. You are getting so close.

Oh my goodness your hubby sounds just like mine, he seemed to always remind me of how big my belly was getting.

After 2 babies, I can say I was NOT cold in the hospital room at all, in fact, I was boiling hot! My 1st was born Aug 8, the hottest day of that year! My mom had to go home to get me a fan, and all the nurses wanted to hang out in my room! The noise from the fan also helped drown out all the noise from the hospital hallways at night so I could sleep at least 5 minutes at at time between nurse visits! Try to get the nursed to coordinate mommy check ups with baby check ups so they wont have to interrupt you twice every hour! Definitely bring your own pillows, theirs have a plastic liner that is very noisy! The hospital will have diapers, wipes, onesies (snag those for baby memory box!!) I also suggest taking a fiber supplement now, and continuing to take them while in the hospital. They like you to “go” before you leave, it will be painful, you may be constipated if you have pain meds, anything to make it easier, I promise, you will be thankful for! I had 2 c-sections, both of them were awesome! Tips for after: there is still a lot of bleeding afterwards, that still lasts for weeks! Be prepared! The nurses will come in and have to push very hard on your belly to feel your uterus to make sure it is shrinking and contracting, it hurts! Also, most people tell you to pack pants that are loose around your belly, I much preferred having something with some “squeeze” in it to hold everything in place! After being cut open, I felt like my insides were going to come out, I liked having the pressure from some regular yoga pants or tight maternity leggings holding every in. I also kept a maxi pad horizontally across my c section incision for extra cushioning and protection. It is all worth it…. you will be in love! Enjoy! And for now, keep your feet up, and relax! You are about to get very busy!

LOOOOOVE the tip about the pad over the incision - I hadn’t heard that one before! I just ordered a postpartum belly wrap, so hopefully that will help me to feel like things are being “held in”. I hear they’re life savers after c sections!

You look so good!! I can’t imagine what it would be like to carry twins! Contractions already? Is that common for thirty weeks with twins? I’d be nervous!!

It’s very common - they’re just BH at this point and are painless/sporadic so my OB isn’t concerned!

Nightlight! Their lights are way too bright, and you need something when you’re still working out the whole latch thing… I didn’t do PJs as I didn’t find I was in bed that much, between feeding, visitors, chilling with the husband etc - I just had some nice trakkies and nursing tops. Did bring slippers though, or TOMS, they’re awesome - slip on, slip off. Agree with the underwear you don’t mind tossing. And I brought a little protein powder in actually - the hospital brekkies were fine but I was still pretty hungry, so added it to milk, porridge etc. Good staying power.
Bring your own water bottle. So you can keep track of how much you’re drinking, rather than their jugs and glasses.
Not too many people do, but I wore a binder for the first few weeks. AMAzing. Helped you feel a little more secure after everything feels a bit jiggly straight afterwards, and definitely helped everything firm back up. My tummy looked fairly normal pretty fast afterwards, certainly not what I was expecting!
Other than that, it was nice not having a hospital bag crammed with stuff - I didn’t have many extra clothes, entertainment, pillows etc. Hubby brought in snacks each day. Less is more, you’ll be busy enough just snuggling your bub.
Good luck! Can’t wait to see them.

I just had boy girl twins June 7th and delivered them c section. I made sure I had a couple nursing tank tops and a robe to wear. I got tired of the nasty gown and wanted to feel normal, even though I was on so many drugs you’re not sure what normal is. If you have any twin questions feel free to email.

I made it 37 weeks and 3 days. I had to have a scheduled section due to both babes being breech. You look great by the way!
