Guys, I think I’ve lost my mind. When people say you truly black out newborn days and not getting any sleep, they weren’t lying. We’ve had quite a week so far which is reason why none of my scheduled to write posts have happened. Sick babies are the pits. You know what else is the pits? Losing your iPhone by putting it on top of your car at 1:30 in the morning when you’re putting your baby in her car seat after being in the ER for two hours.
I needed a new phone anyway!
Let’s back up to Sunday night, shall we?
Emerson was a wreck – crying, screaming, hysterical practically all night, even when we were holding her. I ended up holding her all night long because she screamed every time I put her down. It was heartbreaking! The last time that happened she had an ear infection, so just to be on the safe side, I brought her into the doctor on Monday. Turns out, she has an ear infection in her left ear (the one without the tube). It was a doozy of one, so their pediatrician put her on some strong antibiotics to clear it up. Monday night was a little bit better, and last night she only cried for a few minutes at bedtime. I’m hoping tonight is back to normal. I’m glad she’s feeling like her old self!
Fast forward to last night (Tuesday). I had my last grad class ever (woohoo!!!), and afterwards I went out with some of my classmates for a drink. I got home around 9:30, and I went to check on the girls before I sat down to relax. I noticed Brooklyn was breathing weirdly – like she was really congested. Well, at 10:30 she woke up screaming, crying, coughing, wheezing, and having a really hard time getting a deep breath in. It. Terrified. Me. I was pacing and didn’t know what to do. I wanted to bring her into the ER, but felt like I was being dramatic. My gut knew that I would not sleep all night if I didn’t, so I called my sister who lives right up the street, and she came over to come with me (John had to stay with Emerson).
I was really impressed by the ER we went to. They were quick and so good with Brooklyn. After a chest x-ray, they determined she had irritation in her throat/esophagus from post nasal drip. This caused inflammation and was blocking her air passages. Scary! She received a breathing treatment, some oral steroids, and we were sent on our way. By the time we got home, she sounded so much better. She still is a little hoarse and is coughing a little, but nothing like she was last night.
By the time we got home around 1:30, I was more than ready to go to bed. However, after I put Brooklyn to bed, I realized I was missing two things – the discharge papers and my phone. Crud. After searching through all of my stuff, I determined I had left it all at the hospital. Off I went…. to say I was a little peeved at this point would be an understatement.
I got back to the hospital, and my stuff was still nowhere to be found. Thinking I was just lacking brain cells, I checked my car again and called my sister when I got home. It didn’t make sense to us that my phone had just disappeared.
Until this morning….
when I realized that I had put it on top of my car.
loaded Brooklyn up.
and drove away.
“So that was what that thud was when we were turning!” my sister and I both exclaimed.
I went back to the hospital twice today to scour the parking lot and to talk to security. No phone. I tried the “find my iphone” app – my phone was dead so it’s not working.
Thankfully this is just an inconvenience (what did people do before cell phones? really!). The real thing that matters is that my baby is okay and healthy…. and that hopefully tonight we will all sleep.
Hard.
Until 9 AM (okay that will never happen, but one can wish.).
Sleep is for the weak.

I am glad your sweet babies are doing well. Sucks about the phone
Thanks Sana. The babies are okay so that’s really all that matters! I’m just going through social media withdrawals. So pathetic.
I am so glad every one is going to be okay!
I hope you find your phone though
Sending my love and best wishes to Brooklyn!
Wow, what a crazy few days you guys had! So scary! I’m glad to hear the girls are on the mend now!
I hope you have a nap planned for yourself, Mama. Take care of yourself, too!
Ha! I took a little cat nap on the couch during their afternoon nap. Good thing for summer break!
No rest for the weary. At least the girls are doing better. Phones can be replaced. Adorable Twins can’t.
My mom is actually a telephone triage nurse through Sirona Health, where you call, give them your symptoms, and they determine if you need to go to the doctor or not. I know a lot of insurance companies offer this service, so it’s something to look into for the future.
Totally agree - the phone is definitely replaceable! Good to know about the telephone triage nurses. I’m glad we ended up going in though. You could visibly see she was so much better after the breathing treatment!
Oh that’s awful! I’m glad your girls are feeling better though.
Oh Chels, so sorry about the crazy last several days you’ve had! I’m so glad Emerson and Brooklyn are feeling better, and I hope you get some peace and relaxation these next few days. Yes, totally sucks about the phone, but like you said, at least that’s the worst thing that happened in the midst of it all. Hugs!
Here’s hoping things are looking up! It’s always hard when the kiddos aren’t feeling good …. and definitely wrecks havoc on mama’s brain.
I’m glad both the babies as ok, and hope everyone is health soon! These are the things I’m not looking forward to as a soon-to-be mom, but you do what you got to do for the health of your family.
Oh no! Hang in there Super Mom!
Yikes! I was worried when you weren’t posting - glad the girls are doing better!
Aw thanks Linz!
Well, I’m glad this is all the in past and that the girls are doing better (RIP phone!). I truly did think sleep was for the weak because we went through SIX months of nightly wake-ups, anywhere from one up to three. We blamed it on teeth (and joked that we probably would still blame it on teeth even if she was 16 years old hahaha), but seriously, I think it was teeth. Now that her canines are coming through, she sleeps successfully. Who woulda thought
Congrats on the last grad school class. How do you do this all again? Oh right, because you’re superwoman
Thank you! And I’m not a superwoman. I have a lot of help!!
No I know you do! I promise I meant it as a compliment!!
haha thanks! And about those teeth, that’s so weird about Nia. We have yet to get any teeth yet (we’re still waiting!), but today I felt a bump on Emme’s gums. Theyyyyy’re cominggg!
As a first-time mom (as well), it was heartbreaking reading about your girls not feeling well, but so glad they are better! Praying I can be as strong as you in the (hopefully rare) instances when my little Ethan gets sick. I get paranoid just thinking about it but yes, you gotta do what you have to for the health of the fam!!
I was terrified, I’m not going to lie. I’m typically calm, but I was shaking!
Oh my goodness Chels! That sounds like a LOT. Babies and breathing woes is a terrifying combination! Glad to hear sweet baby B is doing better… Emerson too! My goodness lady! You’re Supermom
PS. CONGRATS ON GRAD SCHOOL! WOOHOO, YOU GO GIRL!
Thanks Katrina! Not supermom, just a mom.
She is doing so much better. We followed up at the ped today!
Oh my goodness! What an adventure! Hopefully you’re all recovered by now. So glad you took Brooklyn when you did! Fingers crossed for a much deserved restful weekend!
