indian summer

October 29, 2014

Every year around this time, we are always blessed with something.

Indian Summer.

If you live someplace that only has one season all year long, this might be a new concept to you. However, in Chicago, we look forward to it the entire fall season. Somewhere in the middle of September, the temperatures drop periodically, giving us a taste of what the coming months will bring. The mornings are cold, the nights are freezing, and although it feels like sweet relief at the time, I know I don’t truly enjoy the coldness that comes for what seems like forever until spring arrives.

The past few weeks have been just that. The temperatures are in the 30’s at night and have been in the 50’s during the day. Not too bad, but when you bring a cloudy sky into the picture, it sure isn’t as inviting as the summer months were.

I live for fall days like we have been having the past 3-4 days - our Indian Summer of 2014.

The skies have been clear, the temperatures have been in the upper 60’s, and on Monday, it was actually in the 70’s. Every year I am wary of Indian Summer coming for a visit, but every year she stays for a few days.

On Monday when I got home, the girls and I were more than ready to enjoy the afternoon. I laced up my shoes, they settled into their stroller, and we were off. We made a 3 mile loop around the surrounding neighborhoods, and we stopped halfway through our walk for some swing action at a local park.October 28, 2014 061

When we got home, I let them walk and crawl through the grass and check out the falling leaves. These two love to be outside, and beside our walks, we don’t get out there near as much as I hope for. Let’s face it, during the summer when I was home, getting outside was a logistical nightmare with the two of them. It always makes me laugh at how fast they are when I am running after them trying to catch their crawling selves to bring them back to where they should be.

Brooklyn is not a fan of grass. She sat in this same spot the entire time and would not move a muscle.

Just like that, it was time to go in and play so I could make dinner (and have Brooklyn try to climb up my leg screaming because she wanted to be picked up).

I’m not happy to report that by the end of this week, our Indian Summer will have long passed. By Halloween, it is only supposed to be 45 degrees outside. Brrr.

Until next year, sweet summer.
