brooklyn & emerson: 15 month update

December 10, 2014

Brooklyn Grace

You are positively charming. Over the weekend, you spent some time with Auntie Jenna (one of my best friends) and Auntie Bridget (her mom).. and Auntie Bridg said she cannot believe how enchanting you are. Your side smiles always seem to win others over.

Well, wouldn’t you know that no less than 2 days after I posted your 14 month update and talked about how stubborn you were, you took your first steps? I swear you just love to prove me wrong. 😉 You are a cautious little thing, and I really just think you didn’t want to walk unless you knew you’d be steady on your feet. While I don’t want to compare you and your sister, it’s funny how different you both started walking. She took off running and it took her weeks to a month to master walking, while you were walking around like it was no big deal after only a few days. You had the biggest grin on your face for the first few weeks of walking - you were SO proud of yourself.

A lot of your words that you’ve been saying over the past month have slowly disappeared. I don’t think you’re quite as interested/motivated to master new words because you’ve been working on that walking! Instead of only saying words you knew how to say in months past, you have become quite a little jibber jabberer! I cannot believe the babbles and jabbers that come out of your mouth these days. I know YOU know what you’re saying - but we have no idea. You are quite insistent on telling us all about every little detail that occurs during the day.

Remember those veneers I was pretty confident we would have to invest in? Well, low and behold - you have teeth behind those gums! For the past month you have worked on cutting FOUR new teeth, and I swear there are more on the way. Your nights have been pitiful, and we have felt so so badly for you. Thankfully some cuddles from mama and some teething tablets or Advil have done the trick for you.

We went to the doctor last week, and I couldn’t believe the pounds you have packed on in the last 3 months! I could have sworn you were only about 22 pounds, but you are 24 pounds even! You are also 31 inches tall (or 34 inches if we count the ponytail).

Right now your favorite things to play with are your blocks. You LOVE building things (or knocking them over). You also enjoy talking on anything that resembles a phone. This has been a favorite for months now. Oh, and you think the couch is your playground. You love to climb up (in a blink, by the way!) and jump up and down… which this mama tries so hard to get you to stop and sit nicely. It doesn’t work. Twice in the last few days you’ve fallen off after you’ve climbed up. You’re so quick that no one has even been able to get over there in time!

You love doggies - you love to pet Charlie and giggle when he gives you kisses. I think you know he loves your food scraps too because you’re always feeding him your extras! Speaking of that food, your newest "trick" is to pile everything you don’t want into the cup holder of your high chair… or you try to get me to eat it. Sorry baby doll, not going to work. 😉
November 30, 2014 009 disclaimer: i didn’t actually let her put those in her mouth!

Your sweet personality is starting to come out more and more. Not that you haven’t always been a sweetheart - you’ve always loved cuddling with mama, dada, and any other adults you know. It’s Aubrey and Emerson you haven’t enjoyed touching you. Well finally this past month, you started to show some interest in giving your sister hugs and kisses. I knew it would happen eventually - I think you’re finally realizing she’s not going anywhere, so you better love on her.

Emerson Faith

I know I start off every month talking about how happy you are, BUT YOU ARE SO HAPPY! (and dramatic – but we’ll talk about that later)

Not only are you walking these days, but you’re practically running trying to be one step ahead of your sister and trying to catch up to your best gal pal, Aubrey. You have been mimicking just about everything these days - including "going to school" with Aubrey with your picnic baskets to sit under the kitchen table. Your favorite thing to do these days is to dance around in a circle and sing to yourself as well as playing "ring around the rosie". You may fall down a little too early, but that’s okay. 😉

Your receptive comprehension this past month has EXPLODED. You can now follow a lot of directions. Those connections that have been happening in your brain have been non-stop.

"Go get a diaper."

"Go give that to ___________."

"Let’s go nigh-nigh" (cue the RUN to your bedroom)

"It’s time to go bye bye." (cue the RUN to the front door)

Those are just a few of the different directions you can follow, and I am amazed that you can comprehend it all. It’s no wonder that these days you call everything "that". We say "that" a lot - maybe we should start working on naming the ACTUAL object for you. Regardless, you have a few new skills this month like really starting to enunciate a few words, including "mo" (more) and putting some motions to songs like "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star". You say a lot all day long, but we have NO idea what you’re saying. I can’t wait for all your babbling to turn into real words.

Just like your sister, you have been a climbing machine. When Nana brings you two to the health club to work out some days, the child care workers have to put the chairs away so the two of you don’t try to climb them. The other day you were climbing on top of a diaper box and thought it would be a good idea to stand on it. Ummm no. Not a good idea. Daddy nipped that in the bud right away. We’re such mean parents, keeping you safe and all. You’re pretty quick at getting up on that couch too. You’ll sit down when we tell you to, but you’re right back up three seconds later. You NEVER stop moving for one second. You’re always on the go! You’re such a rebel too - nothing scares you, which makes my heart stop most days!

You sure love your mama, too. Whenever it’s play time with Dada, you pull out the waterworks and drama queen theatrics because you’re not allowed in the kitchen while I’m trying to cook or clean up. You would rather be my shadow, which I don’t really mind a all.

You’ve been working on your fifth tooth for what seems like forever. That sucker just won’t pop through! I will say though, that the sleep troubles we had with you for a few months have magically disappeared, and that makes me so so happy. You’re now back to sleeping through the night consistently, although you’ve traded your middle of the night wake ups for some early mornings - most days you’re up before 6:00 AM, but I don’t mind. I wish you were a cuddler, but the second you wake up, you want to get down and move around.

You’ve also branched out and tried some new foods this month too! I have discovered that you really enjoy using my fork (with my watching over you like a hawk) to shovel food into your mouth. As long as it’s on a fork (and you get to put it in your mouth), you’re happy. You even love to add food onto the fork before I hand it over… although that food typically ends up back on the tray. You’re a solid 25 pounds these days, and I was surprised that you are a little taller than your sister. Only by 1/4 of an inch, but taller nonetheless.

You still love giving hugs and kisses and continue to be my sweet little baby doll each and every day.

Can you two stop growing now?
