party people

September 19, 2010

Last night, the husband and I FINALLY had people over to our house. Although we have been married since July, our lives have been “go go go!” since then. Between getting settled in, trying to make our house a home, and me going back to work, we have been busy to say the least.

Needless to say, we were very excited to host our first get together, complete with a new fall sign in our backyard.

I’ll be the first to admit that while I love to entertain, it really does stress me out a little. Especially when I have other plans in the morning and can’t be at home to prepare for the majority of the day.

BUT! Listen to what I had accomplished by 10:45 a.m. (which was the time I had to leave to go to a bridal shower).

  • ran 5 miles (first running experience since the half marathon)
  • devoured my Pumpkin OIAJ
  • blogged
  • cleaned the entire house
  • showered
  • made an ungodly amount of hummus

Pretty productive, no? I was proud of myself.

Anyways, back to the matter at hand… the party.

There was a lot of food. One great hostess tip is to have snacks set up in different locations around the house. I had mixed nuts and candy in three different locations as well as a table with the “real appetizers”.

I made my hummus in a very large batch. Apparently my food processor wasn’t working as well as I thought because my mom asked me, “Did you put garlic cloves in this?” My response was, “yes!” Her response? “I ate a whole one!” Okay, everyone steer clear of Mommasita – luckily for me, she is a lover of garlic as well.

Mommasita also brought her amazing black bean salsa. I’ll have to get the real recipe from her, but it’s always a hit. My cousin ate ONLY this and was too full by the time dinner was actually served. My mom also rocks because she made some without the corn for me.

When it came down to actually eating dinner, I really wasn’t that hungry. It was probably because I ate lunch at 2:30 and had been snacking on so many mixed nuts that I think I have a sore in my mouth from so much salt (no, I’m not joking – mixed nuts + me = bad news bears).

I had a sampler plate of a little bit of everything: fruit salad, warm green bean and potato salad (which was cold – and it’s delicious either way!),  regular salad, grilled onions… okay, my dinner was pathetic, I’ll be the first to admit!

One thing I learned is that the grill master does not enjoy having his picture taken…. ever. Sorry husband.

I also got to hang out with my brother who I NEVER see. He works crazy hours at work and I am pretty sure I have seen him once (maybe twice) since I got home from the honeymoon two months ago. It has been sad because I <3 the brother!!

We also made use of some sibling bonding time by taking pictures – is it me or do I look like I am adopted? I actually used to think I was adopted when I was little. Despite the fact that I am a CLONE of my mother, once I found out she dyed her hair blonde, it was all over for me. I went through a “but where did I get my blonde hair? I must be adopted” phase. I think I’ve gotten over it.

And, if you’re ever wondering out in blogland what I am “really” like as a person, I think the next picture explains it all.

The family did not appreciate that one. I found it to be hilarious.

Last night was a hit – I loved spending time with my family and friends. The real hit of the night arrived a little bit late and was accompanied by my bestie.

This is reason 23093487329 why my bestie absolutely rocks. She made me a gluten free, vegan dessert. Doesn’t it look delicious?

We weren’t sure what to call them, but I think we went with “Cookie Brownie Bars”? They were delicious. Not only did she have a man in the grocery store point at her and say “I think there’s something wrong with this girl” to his wife because she was peering at labels for 15 minutes, but she also successfully used a flax egg and substituted applesauce for the butter. If this isn’t love, I don’t know what is (sorry husband.). This just goes to show a girl can’t live without her best friend… EVER!

We went to bed, exhausted, happy, and really… really… full.

But you better believe I became acquainted with an old friend of mine for breakfast today…

Sorry, let me get closer for you.

One word… obsessed.

Question: Did you do anything fun this weekend?

PS – Do you like the new layout? Thumbs up or down?

Thumbs UP to the new layout! I love the new picture and noticed it right away.

Your bestie sounds awesome, I want mine to go make me a delicious vegan dessert! Except he’s a guy and while he cooks, I don’t know how he would do with vegan baking. Not like it’s hard or anything but people seem to get intimidated by it.
