Time to travel back in time – the year? 2003. The purpose of this journey? To tell you my love story – well, the Husband’s and mine.
I knew my husband from afar since I was a sophomore in high school. However, long before I even considered him as my boyfriend, let alone my husband, one of my best friends had her eyes on him. You see, she was quite the boy crazed girl – and had many “dream boys” – and yes, ladies (and gentlemen?) the Husband was one of her dream boys.
Brie and I were high school leaders for a church junior high youth group, and there was this boy named John. He was the drum player in the worship team. So, while my best friend went on and on about her “dream boy”, really I was secretly crushing on him as well.
But, like most crushes do, this one faded as I had one boyfriend after another until my senior year of high school.
Enter in senior year of high school – gym class. 7th period. My high school had about 5-6 gym classes going on at once in the large field house. Each gym class had a different “track”. My senior year I decided to take the “dance and fitness” track – meaning, I would get to embarrass myself while wearing a dance leotard and jazz pants while doing things such as step aerobics and pilates. However, one unit all the gym classes participated in… together. That one unit each year had all the kids talking… social dance.
I vividly remember the few weeks before, making an effort to talk to John during youth group and waiting for the bell to ring at the end of the day. I got butterflies when I was him and was determined to make him notice me. We were talking one day before the end of the day and decided we would be social dance partners.
It was a big risk I was taking considering this boy I liked was Dutch. You see, wooden shoes can’t dance – they’re clumsy, and they have no rhythm. Yes, that is a stereotype, and I will fully admit it.
We learned the foxtrot, a swing dance, and the cha-cha. We weren’t that great. In fact, we practiced outside of school. This boy, John, was very into cars and had me over at his house so he could wash my car. This may or may not have been the weirdest pick up in my life, but I’m thinking it worked. After a car wash, a water fight, and a lot of laughs, we wanted to practice our dance moves.
Our first kiss? Practicing the foxtrot in the basement of his parent’s house. And yes, I made the move (so, if you’re ever wondering who wears the pants in this marriage…. I’ll let you figure that one out yourself).
No matter how much sarcasm about the Husband I play on in my posts, there is no one else in my life that I would rather be with.
Look who got the dream boy now.
