sick as a dog

December 20, 2010

Let me start right off the bat telling you I never get sick.

NEVER.

In fact, the last time I had a fever was two years ago when I was student teaching and came down with (I think) the flu. Before that? It’s unknown to me.

So, what are the chances I woke up on the first day of my winter break from working feeling like death? Oh yeah, I had a fever too.

Ironic situations like this make me giggle a little bit. However, giggling was something I was NOT doing this morning. I couldn’t swallow, let alone talk, and I wanted to curl up in a ball and die.

Before I show you this next picture, I have to say two things. One, yes, my thermometer is pink. Two, my normal body temperature is 96 degrees Fahrenheit. So, when 98.90 degrees shows up on my thermometer, it is a fever in my book.

Think of it this way:

Normal Body Temperature: 98.6 + 2.9 degrees = 101.5 degrees
My body temperature: 96.0 + 2.9 degrees = 98.90 degrees

After forcing myself to get up and eat breakfast a whole THREE hours after I woke up (I know, who am I?), I made what could possibly be the blandest oatmeal known to man.

In fact, I actually forgot oatmeal is originally this color. Pumpkin just wasn’t on my list today. Bland tasted good.

Thankfully I had already made a doctor’s appointment for today, so I was grateful for that. I headed to my natural care doctor, who gave me some goods.

A suggestion for a lemon bath and some natural medicines. I firmly believe in taking natural substances when sick – I can’t ever remember an antibiotic making me feel better in a mere 6 hours.

Also on the “get well” list? Books! I trudged to the library and picked out a lot of good reads which I saw were suggested on Kailey’s site when she asked for book recommendations.

My Name is Memory was first on my list – I’ve already read 100 pages. It is so good. It kind of reminds me of Time Traveler’s Wife in a way.

I cannot believe how weird my appetite was today. Fruits and vegetables made me want to gag. All I wanted was carbs, carbs, carbs!

Soy crisps:

French fries? Seriously – who makes French fries when they’re sick?

Although they look tasty, this was actually not a very good idea. My stomach did not thank me for it. But they were so good – and so much better than the fast food fries I was temped to go out and buy. ::gasp::

I’m a horrible patient, by the way – I can’t sit still to save my life.

Somehow I managed to get up off the couch and make cookies.

I may or may not have eaten a few as well….

On the menu for tonight? Butternut squash and carrot soup! Can  you believe I’ve never had butternut squash soup before? I also got to use my immersion blender for the first time. All I can say is: awesome.

I think the only reason why I was able to eat this is because it didn’t look like any kind of fruit or vegetable upon eating.

I’m actually feeling a lot better other than the fact that I’m really tired.

I guess that day where I wasn’t really “sick” and took off work came back to bite me.

Karma sucks – and so does this post. Did I mention humor isn’t my strong point when I’m sick?

Question: Have you gotten sick yet this season? What are your go to remedies?

Awwww, sweetheart!! I am so sorry you are sick. :( No fun. But I’m glad to hear you are taking care of yourself with warm cookies and soup. Nature’s best medicine. Although the fries are a nice touch. I’ll have to try these next time. ;)

I hope you feel better soon!! I swear - everybody’s getting sick right now! My boss was out and I just read another blogger being sick, too. Best not be contagious through the web ;)
I refuse to aswer your question about whether I’ve been sick because I don’t want to jinx myself. But I will say - whenever I feel one coming on (even in the slightest!) it’s early bed time for me (lots of SLEEP) and making sure I’m getting my vitamins ;)
Those cookies look good!! What kind?!

They’re vegan chocolate sugar cookies - a recipe my mom found!

When I was sick last week I tried fresh ginger, honey and lemon steeped in hot water- it cleared up my congestion and soothed my throat for awhile, and a LOT quicker than the mucinex I was taking. Hope you get better soon!!

Awwww… think of it this way- you’ll get the worst of it out of the way before all the Christmas shenanigans! I hope you feel better soon.
I haven’t been sick going on almost 3 years (knock on wood). I was still in grad school and it hit me HARD. I was either holding on to the wall or running into it as I walked down the hallway because the fever was so bad!
I know I’ve been lucky. Which is why I’m nervous for the next round. It seems I go forever without and then it’ll take me out for a week.
Drink that green tea like water!

Boo to being sick!
Hopefully a good rest tonight will kick it out of your system.
I am intrigued by that one book you mentioned…I loved the Time
Traveler’s Wife.

Aw, feel better! When I’m sick I never want fruits and veggies either. Carbs are the best when you’re sick-especially Saltines.

I never get sick either except when I get stabbed by a flu shot. UGH I can feel a fever coming on and it’s only been 6 hours since the stabbing.

Chelsey, I feel your (sick) pain! Feel better! Today is my first day of winter break as well. I made it all semester feeling fine, gave my students all of their final assignments last week, made it through the weekend and then woke up this morning with a sore throat and ear ache :( It’s what happens when I go go go, then as soon as my body gets a chance to relax…sick! I recommend rest and copious amounts of Christmas movies :)

I never get sick either (knock on wood) other than a sore throat or a few sniffles. It never turns into a full fledged cold though. I hope it stays that way!

I cannot believe all the food you made! Hahah I usually just make a box of Annie’s and plunk myself on the couch. Doctor, library, fries, cookies, soup??? I’m impressed lol ;)

Oh no! I always get ill at the start of a holiday; I think it’s because you work too hard at work and as soon as you stop, your body goes: “enough now!”
I swear by dissolvable vitamin C and echinacea and steaming your face a few times a day also really helps clear everything…
At least you’ve got good books… I read One Day a while ago and it’s amazing but I did cry at one point!
Hope you feel better soon x

cleaneatingchelsey December 21, 2010 at 5:11 pm

I read “good books” as “good looks” and I laughed. Then I realized what it really said.

Sorry to hear you are sick!!! I had butternut squash soup the last two days, I cannot get enough, its so delish!
I take liquid echinacea anytime I get sick and it works WONDERS! I put the drops in some water and drink it 2-3 times a day and I wake up the next day feeling like a new person! Ginger, Lemon and garlic also help me tons! I hope you feel better!!

Hope you feel better soon! So crazy that your normal body temp is only 96! My husband’s body temp is normally 100, so it’s funny because it takes a LOT for him to get a fever (although he frequently fogs up car windows) : )

*sad face* feel better…MILK IT. Treat yourself like a princess…a sick princess who needs TLC.

The Dave Eggers Book is really amazing…stay put if you cant get it at first. Its pretty amazing. ITS REAL.

Oh. and who eats french fries when sick? “That Girl” who also finds it in herself to make the french fries, photograph them, and blog about all of it cuz she loves us and we would miss her if she didn’t.

You WILL be fine by Christmas. I know it.
