Things got pretty ugly around my parts today.
I’d like to promote a PSA for all sisters of all pregnant women out there:
Do not — I repeat — DO NOT, take your pregnant irritable sister to a delightfully delicious raw vegan cafe unless she is aware of the situation before hand. Tampering with pregnant ladies’ food is not something to be recommended, as I have learned first hand.
Yesterday, Mommasita asked my sister and I out on a little Mother/Daughter date for the afternoon. Our plan was lunch and then Whole Foods. I take that back — my mom and my plan was lunch and Whole Foods. My sister had no say in the situation. Poor girl — she had no idea what she was getting herself into when she got into the car at noon today.
My mom and I have been wanting to try Borrowed Earth Cafe for almost a year now, but never made it out there until today.
Borrowed Earth Cafe is a 100% organic, raw, and vegan cafe settled in the quaint downtown area of Downers Grove. It is nestled away along streets filled with unique shops, restaurants, and is across the street from an authentic old time movie theater.
Upon entering the cafe, we were greeted by a lovely hostess (it was only her 4th day!) who let us have our pick of tables, a few of which were already taken by other diners. We chose a table by the window (perfect lighting) and were immediately brought a large carafe of water and menus.
We (meaning my mom and I) had a really hard time deciding what to get because we wanted to try everything.
My sister, on the other hand, had a hard time deciding what to get because she didn’t want to try anything.
My mom and I are both gluten free and vegetarians (she is also soy free), and my sister is nothing of the sort. Our eating habits couldn’t be more different, so I knew it was going to be an interesting dining experience for her.
Remember how she’s pregnant? Yeah, she didn’t find this lunch situation quite as humorous as my mom and me. We were told more than once that it was not a good idea to mess with her food.
Whatever - more for me.
We began with two appetizers.
Stuffed Mushrooms: “Mushrooms stuffed with pine nuts and a delicate blend of spices and herbs” (from their menu)
Cheese Perogies: Bite-sized crescents of jicama wrapped around a blend of nut “cheese” flavored with garlic, nama shoyo (raw soy), lemon juice, and bell pepper (from their menu)
I really liked both of the appetizers. The mushrooms were by far my favorite, but the perogies were really good as well. The filling in the perogies was very rich, and I could have done with less filling.
Kirstin was not quite sure about the food that was set before her.
Gotta love those candid shots…
My reaction was (obviously) a more realistic one, as I have never been a picky eater in my life. That, and I also enjoy eating cuisine such as this.
For my entree, I ordered the Earth Burger. It was a veggie burger made out of walnuts and carrots. The “bun” was a raw flax cracker. It was served with a side salad, topped with their amazing green dressing (made from green onions, agave, salt, and pepper), and jicama fries.
I destroyed this burger. It was great. It was a little difficult to bite into, as the “bun” was a crunchy crackers, but the flavors were outstanding. I really enjoyed the raw catsup that it was served with as well.
My sister ordered the Planet Pizza. The crust was buckwheat and flax seed, which was then covered with kale, nut “cheese”, and marinara sauce. On the side, she got three side salads: kale, beet, and what I think is Swiss chard.
Since this is my blog and it is my opinion that matters, it was delicious. In fact, her leftovers are sitting in my fridge right now. I’m pretty excited about this. The pizza had a little bit of a bitter taste, which I am sure is because of the kale.
My mom ordered the special, which was the Spaghetti Pasta Bake — which I think is funny because it’s not made from spaghetti, pasta, and it is not baked at all.
Out of the three entrees, I enjoyed this one the most. It was amazing. The “breadcrumbs” (walnuts) and flavors throughout the dish reminded me exactly of the way an authentic Italian meal would taste.
We were also told we had to save room for dessert — which really we didn’t, but we made room for it.
Meet my new obsession: the Turtle Cheesecake
I think I died and went to Heaven when I took my first bite. This cheesecake is made primarily of cashews and agave and is frozen to resemble a real cheesecake. It was amazing to me how close to a cheesecake this tasted. This dessert did not stand a chance, especially because the pregnant diner decided this was an acceptable dish to eat. The chocolate sauces that were drizzled across it were perfect for scooping up on top of our delicate large bite sized pieces.
Overall, I really enjoyed my dining experience. Would I eat raw every day? No. But it was fun to try, and I would definitely eat raw every once in a while. I left feeling full, not stuffed like other places I have eaten a large meal at. I also did not experience any bloating or stomach problems that I usually get in the late afternoon. A little pricey (thanks Mom!), but it is understandable with all of the organic food and the nuts that make up the dishes.
6 hours later, and I’m still not really hungry. It’s dinner time — and I’m not eating. Who am I? Usually by now if I have not eaten, it’s gotten pretty ugly.
And I’m not even pregnant.
Question: Have you ever tried raw food before? What were your thoughts?

Just wanted to let you know that nama shoyu is NOT gluten free.
whaaat!!!! Well, then that explains the massive headache I got this afternoon!
Gluten is a sneaky little ingredients, isn’t it? Makes its way into things you wouldn’t even imagine it to. Luckily, you’re not allergic to gluten and soy like I am.. had I had that, my throat would have closed!
It sure is sneaky. I’m usually good about knowng what’s in dishes when I go to restaurants, but I didn’t know what nama shoyu was. I guess I should have asked. Now I’m crossing my fingers that little bit didn’t screw me up GI wise! You never know…
Aww, well I’m sure you’ll be okay. It was probably used very sparingly. Hoping for the best!
Wow, I’m pretty sure that cheesecake could convince ANYONE to go raw!!! That looks so amazing!!! At least you and your mom are on the same page, I’m the only one in my family that is a vegetarian and likes to try restaurants like this one!
I think it would be a lot harder for me if my mom weren’t into foodie things like me!
All of that food looks delish!! Especially the cheesecake. Yum. Now I want some
I’ve been really wanting to try a Raw restaurant. Everything look delish, especially that dessert, YUM!! I just might have to make a trip out to Downers Grove soon!
Omg that turtle cheesecake look amazing!!! I’ve never been anywhere Vegan but I would definitely try it. All 3 of your meals look amazing. Too bad I could only take my boyfriend, no one else would dare eat anything raw or vegan lol Oh well
Oh my gosh, the Husband would have died if I tried to bring him there!
My first raw restaurant experience was last week and it wasn’t good. At all. The food was alright but the service sucked. HOWEVER, I would LOVE to try it again (at a different place). This place looks amazing! Especially that cheesecake.. oh my gosh..
Love your sister’s reaction! Haha. Priceless.
I’m sorry your service was so bad!!!
I love raw restaurants! The food is always delicious, and by no means anything I could even attempt to make at home which is what makes the dining experience even more special!
Raw food is delicious!
I especially love LARABARS!!
I love your smile!
xoxo
Kathleen
Those Larabars are the best, aren’t they? Thanks Kathleen!
Ummm that cheesecake looks AMAZING. I have never been to a raw restaurant (there aren’t any in these parts) but one day in my travels I would love to!
omg your sisters face is priceless in those pics, lol! Love it!!!!!
I am glad at least you and your mom LOVED the food and it looks amazing as ever!!! Ok, did your sis at least enjoy dessert?! I hope so and if not I hope your beautiful pregnant sis got some food she did love after maybe somewhere else or at home : )
Have a good night love!! xoxo
She did enjoy the dessert! And after we left, we hopped down the street to a Starbuck’s as all she wants to eat lately are egg sandwiches!
I love raw zucchinni pasta…I don’t have a fancy spiralizer but I just use my hand held Julienne peeler and Viola!
Fresh Salsa is pretty cool too…lol. Can’t wait to go to the facy raw vegan place in town someday soon.
That food all looks amazing!!! There is a raw food restaurant where I live, and I am obsessed with it. The food is just so clean and pure. I feel good after I eat it. I haven’t taken my husband there yet because I am sure that he’ll react like your sister!
I felt so good all day after eating it. It was so satisfying, but it didn’t weigh me down a bit!
Gahhh, I am so jealous!! Everything looks so amazing. And I bet your sister is really glad you posted those pics of her
Love the flax cracker “bun” on your burger.
I’ve never eaten a raw meal. Sure, I’ve made the “usual” raw desserts at home, but never anything very extreme!
I’ve never had a fully raw meal. But honestly, it’s not my thing. Vegetarian I’m down with… but I like a lot of my veggies prepared…
I have been to one raw restaurant and unfortunetly it was pretty gross!! I’d rather just stick to being mostly healthy but I can give up my chicken
Those candids are GREAT! That restaurant looks great though I totally would enjoy it!!
I had a raw “pasta” at a vegetarian restaurant once but I didn’t realize that it was raw when I ordered it. I really didn’t like it at all so I’m not sure I would try it again.
Haha, this is just like me and my sister!!! She once told me, I don’t like anything organic. I asked her if she even knew what organic meant and she said, “yeah it’s all that weird crap you eat.” LoL
That’s how the Husband is!!! He doesn’t realize that organic might not necessarily mean “different”!
This all looks so good! I’ve been to a bunch of vegan restaurants, but I’ve never eaten raw cuisine. I’m game, though! Those pictures of your sister are hilarious!
My mom and I are both gluten free and vegetarians (she is also soy free) =
THAT IS SO COOL that you have support like that. My family is none of the sort.
And how cool that Downers Grove has something like that. WOW…times changed since I left Chicago and Dupage Co. in 2000!
And that burger, bun, the cheezecake, oh wow. I make my raw vegan cheezecake in like 5 mins. It’s SO EASY. Cashews, agave, dates, mainly for the filling and the crust is raw/vegan/GF. You can make a huge cheezecake for about 2 bucks and it will be raw, vegan, and GF. Make one!
Things haven’t changed toooo much. It is a raity to find a restaurant like that!!
I’ve eaten a lot of raw meals, but only at one truly 100% raw restaurant. I go tthe sampler platter….lots of nuts. They kept me full forever! I got a slice of buckwheat pizza. I’m with your sister on that one.
This cracked me up because when I was pregnant everyone knew not to mess with my food…I was super picky! And I felt like I had every right to be.
I am officially drooling. While your sister may not have enjoyed the food very much, at least you got her leftovers
! What a fun place to go out to eat!
I LOVE raw food, but it would be so expensive to buy a dehydrator slash I’m a cheapo:)
agreed.
haha I love the candid shots! The food looks great though!
I don’t think I’ve ever done the raw thing, but your dishes make me want to try!
Hahhaha, your poor sister. It’s so hard to eat when you’re pregnant. Not only are your taste buds just completely on strike, but you have all these darned rules of what you can and cannot eat. That must have been quite an adventure for her. Awww.
That food looks delicious though. Ugh, I hate reading bloggers restaurant reviews when it’s eleventy hundred miles from me!!!
It’s ironic that you’re not a picky eater at all, considering your diet restrictions. I guess you should be thankful, actually, since you have less to choose from.
I just checked out the menu - I would want everything too! There are no raw restaurants here. I live in the cattle province where you can find endless beef and bison but very little vegetarian cuisine. In fact, there is just 1 vegetarian restaurant here. booo. I love raw food and try to make it myself but it never tastes as good as the stuff I’ve had in Vancouver.
My sister and I are on completely different pages food wise. She straight up refused by lunch offer last week because I wanted to go to a vegetarian restaurant. I can’t say I’ve ever really had raw food but that “cheese”cake is to die for!
Makes me want to try a raw restaurant too!!!! But your sister’s face is priceless- wow!!
Nommm! Everything looks awesome! I’m not picky at all when it comes to food so I know that I would enjoy the food at a place like that. Too funny that your sister wasn’t liking it.
Oh dear - your sister’s reaction is exactly how mine would’ve reacted (except mine isn’t pregnent!)
I had raw food in Chicago and I LOVED it! I wouldn’t do it every day, but I was so blown away by what they can do..it’s mad!
I’ve wanted to try that restaurant downtown too!
Your poor sister!
That food looks AMAZING… I love raw desserts! Kind of craving cheesecake now…
Hahaha this is so funny because I can totally relate! My sister has pretty different eating habits from me too, so she always ends up hating the restaurants I pick.
I think all your meals look amazing though! I can’t really eat raw food from restaurants (because of all the nuts
) but I want to try making my own sometime!
Mine too - but in our defense it was 2 against 1.
That looks AWESOME. I love raw food. I could never go totally raw because I don’t have the culinary skills to make it taste that good all the time, but holy moly…it’s amazing what you can do with nuts and a dehydrator. If you’re ever in NYC for any reason, I’m taking you to get a mint chocolate sundae. End of discussion.
I’m down - I might just have to come to NYC just for that reason alone!!
I could never do what they do either, but I’ll gladly eat the food they prepare me!!
I would definitely devour that burger!
I’ve never eaten at a raw food restaurant before, but I really want to go to one. I might have the make the trip out to this one. Google Maps just told me in 39 minutes I can be there!
I love your sister’s facial expressions. My sister eats totally different from me, too, and there’s no way I could have even convinced her to walk through the door!
We should meet up there sometime!!! I’m emailing you.
I have not tried raw food, but I would love to! Especially after seeing the amazing looking food you got! That Spaghetti Pasta Bake looks incredible!
I’m not raw, but this sounds like a fun dining experience - I’d try anything at least once & that place sounds awesome! Sorry your sister didn’t quite agree - I LOVE the second pic of her where she’s all “what the heck?” Hilarious! Hopefully she’s not mad at you guys for “tricking” her into that lunch place!
No she’s not mad. She had quite a few words to say to us though! She looked like she was going to cry more than anything.
Your poor sister! Her faces were priceless, though! And you looked gorgeous, per the usual
Enjoy the rest of your weekend!
I have never tried raw food, but wanted to pipe up and say how much I love jicama! I would totally try raw food in a restaurant like that, and I am sure I would like it, but I wouldn’t ever go all out and eat that way all the time.
Yea…I could have clued you in to that one. LOL Us preggo gals tend to not crave such things and when we go out to eat we want the hearty, hearty, not good for you stuff.
Oh gosh, I know. But it was just too much fun for us! She wanted to KILL us!
That looks delicious! I have never been to a raw food restaurant but would love to.
I died and went to heaven just LOOKING at that cheesecake!! Ohmygoodness it looks AMAZING, and I can’t BELIEVE that it’s raw!!
Haha your sister’s expression is hilarious!!
I had the same experience when I took my parents to a raw vegan restaurant in London!
haha, the pics of your sister are so funny!
oh, and that cheesecake looks soooo good!
that food looks really good. i haven’t tried much raw food, but i would really to. there aren’t any raw food cafes around here, so i’ll have to create the dishes myself.
That cheesecake looks to DIE for. And the rest of the food too. I understand the pregnant sister thing. No one got in the way when my sister was hungry. And she always knew what she was hungry for!
P.S. I was born in Downers Grove! But moved when I was just 2. Still, pretty cool!
What a small world! Do you still live in the area?
No, I’m in Utah now. But I did just go back to visit Chicago a couple months ago. Love it!!
Wow, that place looks awesome! I’d love to try all of those dishes! And your sister’s faces are hilarious!
Hahah that sounds like my sister she is soo extremely picky with food and my mom and I are super adventurous. Lunch looks delish I wish we had places like that around here.
OMG THAT FOOD LOOKS INSANE!!! i would SO get your burger- and of course finish off with that cheesecake! i cannot believe ur sis didnt like it grr!
Haha - she is not a foodie at all.
I’ve never been to a raw food only restaurant. It sounds delicious though! I love how you wrote about your experience - I felt like I was there! I’m still cracking up!
That looks delicious! My family did a homemade raw Christmas once and I was in heaven!
I want to move in with your family.
