apologies (GIVEAWAY!)

May 17, 2011

At this point, you probably are mad at me. I haven’t talked to many of you today, which means you are all giving me the silent treatment. I’m going to pretend like it had nothing to do with my working and teaching all day, and everything to do with the fact that we’re in a fight.

I’ll be the bigger person today — I’m sorry.

Really, I truly am.

I apologize.

Lo siento.

Please accept my kindest request for forgiveness.

You probably don’t even realize that you’re mad at me. You will though, when I tell you why. You see, I forgot to announce a giveaway winner yesterday.

It had nothing to do with how busy I was, and it had everything to do with the fact that I forgot.

How’s that for honesty, huh? I feel so bad (not really) that I’m going to throw in one more SO Delicious coupon (really!) and make the grand total for the winner being six coupons. Because Mommasita taught me how to share.

So, without further adieu, the winner of the (now) six SO Delicious free product coupons is…

image image

Janice! Congratulations, Janice! Please email me your contact information and I will get those coupons out to you pronto!

::sigh:: Now everyone BUT Janice is mad at me.

Can you tell I’m a people pleaser? The Husband always tells me I apologize too much — unless it’s something I should reallly be apologizing for. Then I’m just stubborn.

Thankfully, I have another somethin’ somethin’ lined up for you. Because I love you — and well, I’m feeling generous.

A few weeks ago, the folks over at Vega contacted me and asked me if I would like to review a new book that is being published. The book is Must Have Been Something I Ate by Peggy Kotsopoulos.

May 17, 2011 004

I instantly fell in love with Peggy not only because of her laid back tone of writing, but also because I’m secretly hoping she is related to Uncle Jesse (::crosses fingers::). That’s two Full House references in a week — did you catch that? This book is set up for readers to make a connection between how you feel and the foods you eat. Being someone who firmly believes that what you eat affects your mood and the overall quality of your life, I was so excited to dive into this text.

May 17, 2011 005
This isn’t your typical health book either — Peggy has set this book up with bright colors, easy to understand explanations, and many graphics to allow the reader to better understand the content.

The book is broken up into sections of different ailments that tend to affect women such as depression, energy levels, anxiety and stress, sleep, and ::ahem:: sexual desires. There are more sections, but I really don’t want to spoil everything for you. Each section has information about the biology of your body and how foods affect each system. It is absolutely fascinating to me (and will be to you too!)

Peggy writes this book just as if she is sitting across a table from you drinking a cappuccino and discussing your inner most secrets. I love the tone of the book, and kind of want to be her best friend. The fifth section of this book is my favorite: the recipes!

May 17, 2011 006

This section has a variety of different recipes, both sweet and savory, and some even include the Vega products. Because of this, I am going to include three of the Vega packets they sent for me to try out — I want to share the wealth with you! Perhaps you could make Peggy’s VegaTini with the berry flavor.

Not only is the book a great read, it will be a wonderful resource for me when I can’t quite put my finger on my moods/energy levels.

May 17, 2011 007

So, for your chance to win this Vega Book Giveaway: Must have Been Something I ate, by Peggy Kosopoulos, you can do the following:

  1. Leave a comment telling me your thoughts on foods affecting your moods/energy levels/quality of life (mandatory)

  3. Follow me on Twitter

I think what we eat is a reflection of how we feel about ourselves. So if we eat wholesome foods, we feel better and have more energy - we feel good. If we eat poorly, it shows too. I think it’s a great thing that a food-mind-body connection exists because that means that everything is in our control!

I know that I definitely choose foods based on my mood (chocolate plus bad day is a no brainer), but I’ve definitely noticed that foods beyond my morning coffee definitely affect my mood as well. It’s so much easier to feel happy and energetic when fueled by a bowlful of veggies as opposed to the sluggish feeling that follows some greasy french fries, though they may be delicious as well!

I definitely feel like how I eat affects me; body, mind, and soul. If I haven’t been eating well, I notice a change in how I feel physically, how I sleep, how I react to situations and stress, and the things I want to do. When I am eating well, I feel more at peace in all these areas. It’s amazing how that works.

I am a firm believe that what you put into your body can and does affect your mood. If I eat foods that are full of sugar and oil I feel horrible, lethargic, irritable and just weighed down. When I focus on fresh fruits and vegetables, I feel light and more balanced.

My mood is totally effected by what I eat and what i eat is a reflection of how i feel. I feel so refreshed and happy when I eat balance healthy meals and sluggish and blah and tired when I don’t. But when I’m sad or sick I crave warm comforting carbs (with chocolate!!)

I definitely believe that what you eat can effect how you act and feel. I know for myself that when I eat clean & healthy, I feel more at peace and my energy levels are higher. Whenever I notice that I’m in a bad mood or feeling lethargic, it usually has to do with my hormones & what I have eaten/drank in the past 24 or more hours.

Reply

Leanne @ The Skinny Architect May 17, 2011 at 8:11 pm

I’m in a better mood when I’m making healthy food and exercise choices simply because I get great pleasure out of knowing that I’m being kind to my body. I definitely think moods affect how you eat - I’ve always been an emotional eater. When I’m upset or stressed, I eat more - and usually not good things. That’s why I ended up being so overweight. I’ve lost the weight, but now need to continue to work on the connection between my moods and foods - so didn’t mean to rhyme there. :)

Foods 100% affect how I feel, if I eat processed or sugary foods I get a migraine and feel tired and slugish with no energy. My skin also hates me when I eat those foods too! Compared to clean eats I have more energy, and have virtually eliminated all my migraines - which I have had for more than 20 years! I think this book would give me even more insight into how certain foods may affect me!

Reply

Bebe May 17, 2011 at 9:02 pm

Food affects mood. TOTALLY… I see it with my kiddos. Like when they are hungry they start whining and fussing over silly stuff and when I give my older boy foods with refined sugar or food dyes he becomes a maniac. I truly believe that everything we put into our bodies affects how we feel throughout the day. When I sneak a slice of cheese my belly hurts and I feel terrible. I am so proud of girls like you with all this wisdom so early on, I wish I knew everything you know when i was your age. It took a sick kiddo for me to rethink the way we eat and the way I feed my family.

Reply

Jennifer (The Gourmetour) May 17, 2011 at 9:02 pm

Not only is it important to remain nourished for stabilized moods, but I believe that the act of choosing what to eat really affects your mood too! If I choose to eat a cupcake I feel so much better about it than if I just had them sitting out and mindlessly grabbed one in passing. If I choose to focus on balancing my meals I feel energized AND in high spirits!

Foods do believe your mood- I know it’s not proved scientifically, but it’s basically a fact in my book. Not eating enough saturated fats (like many vegans who dont watch their intake) can cause mood swings and irritability. Too much sugar leaves you groggy. A bucket of beer makes you sick, etc.

Oh yah… AND food totally affects my mood. If it isn’t what my body needs, my body kind of rejects it. I get sick from the wrong kind of fuel….. See how the Full House reference got me off track!

I’m not sure that I think certain foods effect my mood, other than that I am incredibly happy when I eat food that I crave and that agrees with my body. I can however, attest to certain foods making me feel sluggish, energetic, sick, bloated, great, or just plain strange. I try to pay attention to these foods and have noticed that sometimes it is not the particular food, but what I eat with it.

Summer is a perfect example of how the food I eat affects my mood. Every year when the season turn from winter and slowly into summer, my diet gets far more healthy. More veggies and fruit are in my diet and I eat healthier carbs and fats. It is no coincidence that in the summer (aka warmer months) I have way more energy to workout longer and more often.

My mood can be a slave to what I pick to eat sometimes … maybe too much. Boyfriend does an impression of me when I’m hungry that involves fangs, claws and hissing. It’s great for the relationship.

my food choices definitely affect my moods! well the most important thing for me is actually when i eat and how much i eat - because i get SO cranky/moody/irritable when i’m hungry or haven’t eaten enough. but also choosing nutrient-dense foods gives me energy and makes me feel at my best. getting enough whole-grain carbs really is stabilizing for my mood too - i have realized in the past month that when i don’t get enough of those kinds of carbs, i can get moody/depressed easily!

I’d actually really like to learn more about how foods can affect mood… I’ve been laerning about some of the brain chemistry and such in neuropsychology and it’s interesting how some neurotransmitters are derived from stuff in your diet, and I wonder how big of a difference it makes! There doesn’t seem to be a ton of research on it though…

I think many people take for granted how important the quality & quantity of food we eat it to our overall health & well-being. My body does not hesitate to let me know when I need to give it certain foods & if I don’t, I know that crankiness & fatigue will result so I’m learning to trust and listen to my body, & accept that it’s smarter than I am. I also know that I feel so good, both mentally and physically when I know that I am taking care of my body and giving it what it needs :O)

I have a couple of foods that will put me into a ball on the couch:
- Fake sugar: If I have too much in a day (and it doesn’t take much), I feel like I’m going to pass out…not cool
- Meat and Dairy: I generally don’t eat these foods, but sometimes I feel obligated when I go to my in-laws…they’re foreign and don’t entirely understand why I wouldn’t want to eat cheese (they understand meat), and it’s hard when almost every dish in their culture includes cheese or some form of dairy. Every time we go to their house, it’s no doubt I’ll be on the couch with a “food baby”.

This book sounds perfect! I truly believe there is a connection between mood and food and it sounds like the perfect compliment to the health coaching course I’m taking right now.

This book sounds awesome!

Food and mood…well, coffee is the worst offender for me. Coffee and I have such a love/hate relationship….I love it, but it makes me crazy. I also think sugar, proteins, and B-vitamins have a big effect.

My birthday is on Monday and this would make the perfect gift!!!

Hi! I’m currently in the process of recovering from an eating disorder, so nowso more than EVER im discovering the relationship between my mood and the foods I eat, but even before I got sick I saw the same thing. If I was extremely happy or excited my brain would morph into a “you DESERVE this” mindset and I would anything that I wanted, but a larger of quantity because I “deserved” it. If I was sad, or got into a fight with someone, I would either eat extra junky things because “they dont care about me, so i may as well blow up into a balloon!”, or I would go the complete opposite way and not eat, thinking “this will show THEM! ill look better and theyll know they caused it and ill WIN!”.

Now, as im recovering, im a lot more in tune with my body. Days that i’m extremely happy and excited and encouraged, I find myself striving to eat the RIGHT way, with three smaller meals accompanied by three healthy snacks throughout the day. The better my mood, the better I eat, and , thus, the better I feel. On days that i’m struggling and simply hate having to THINK, I either restrict or gather a large quantity of a “safe-in-terms-of-calories” food and just eat that all day. And you know what? It makes me feel WORSE.

Conclusion? It’s not just about the type of food…its a 360 circle. In order to be happy, one must eat healthy: eat enough, eat a variety, indulge a little here and there, and follow your specific hunger cues to tell you when you’ve had too little or enough! It’s all about balance, and the more in-line you feel, the better your mood!

Awesome giveaway! Food definitely affects my mood and my health! I have recently become aware of the effect on my mood, but have been striving to eat for my health for the past 4 years. I am so much more mentally satisfied if I cook myself a wholesome meal, rather than warm up a frozen dinner. Even though the dinner is nutritionally sound, I need to put in that effort to really feel full and satisfied.

I’m just starting to get in touch with how food relates to my well-being and mood. So far, I know that gluten and dairy make me feel lethargic and bloated, my digestion is better when I cut these things. I’m hoping cutting gluten will also help with my iron absorption! And I know that eating animal products makes me feel ethically and morally upset. I’m hoping to start making more mood/body/food connections in the coming weeks!

I totally believe what we eat affects our mood and how we feel overall. I know when I eat more processed things or things with sugar I get tired and irritable. Keeping my diet to whole foods and clean eats makes me a much easier person to live with. I have also noticed that eating sugar in my diet helps to set me up for a binge later. It is as if my body can not get enough, for this reason alone I try to avoid added sugar.

Mood totally relates to my mood…when I eat “clean” healthy foods I feel good and have energy and just happier. When I eat sugar, fried foods or just generally unhealthy I feel “heavier” and blah and grumpy. I can feel it immediately!

I just found your blog and liked you on FB. I have seen first hand how much food can affect you. My little one was recently diagnosed with a dairy allergy so I have completely re-vamped our diets. I feel 100% better and I can see a huge change in him as well. He’s more alert, more energetic, and he is sleeping better. I’m really excited to keep learning more about how to control our eating and moods better. I also have been on the lookout for toddler friendly vegan/healthy recipes. I would love a copy of this book!

After eliminating certain foods from my diet I can say now that they affected my mood or sleep patterns. Strangely enough, I also found that drinking red wine right before going to sleep left me with night sweats…and not in the good way. I have been looking forward to this book since seeing Brendan speak in Walnut Creek (about an hour drive from where I live but I wouldn’t miss it for the world). Thanks for spreading the word!

Food has always made a HUGE difference in my life. I just never knew it until 3 years ago when I was in a severe health crisis. Changing the way I ate to a mostly raw whole food diet, gave me my life back and now I want to share what I have learned and also how much food does impact your life. I would like to win the new book Must have been something I ate, because I am going to school to study nutrition and be a holistic nutritionist and I need as much info and knowledge as I can get my hands on! Thank you Chelsey for spreading the word on food and health!!!!

Food affects me a lot! If I eat too much sugar or carbs, I feel really lethargic and get really down (this happens especially if I eat sugar). I feel so much better when I eat lean proteins, healthy fats and tons of veggies…and some fruit in moderation. I think more clearly and have so much energy.

What I eat completely influences my quality of life. If I eat processed, greasy food I’ll get stomach pains; if I have dairy I also get stomach pains… but eating and exercising go hand-in-hand for me. If I exercise I’m more likely to eat well and thus my mood increases :)

Foods 100% affect my mood; however, not nearly as much as they used to. I am in recovery from an eating disorder. I used to let what and how much I ate completely dictate my attitude for the day (wether or not I did “bad” or “good” as determined by my ED). Now, I try not to let it to get to me too much, and I also try not to label my food as “bad or good”.

Honestly foods don’t noticeably affect my energy levels or mood. I feel the same eating junk food or veggies. I kinda wish I had that extra motivation of knowing if I eat junk I’ll feel like junk but I try to eat as healthy as possible.

I’m so new to this and super excited to find and read your blog. I definitely find a correlation in food and mood. I work behind a computer all day and if I eat poorly in the morning and at lunch….I’m about a zombie come 2pm. Yikes! But, if I start my day with a green drink and then a salad for lunch…I’m rocking through the day. It’s super hard to eat “clean” all the time, especially with a little one in the house. This book sounds amazing! Thanks for offering this giveaway.

a lot of the time, food can dictate how i feel. for example, if i eat a healthy meal, i feel energized and happy afterward. however, i’m almost happier when i don’t notice the connection between food and my mood. when life is just happening, and eating is part of it, i feel the most at ease.

I’d love to be entered! Food for sure affects my energy levels and just my mood and outlook in general. I think it’s kind of like exercise in that regard. If you go awhile not exercising, you might not notice how well you could actually feel if you did exercise. Same with eating healthy! :)

Eating 100% effects my mood..
fried foods= sluggish, slow and whiny
processed white flour= super hyper for a split second, then a huge crash.
red meat= lethargic and out of it
vegetables/fruits= perky and happy
healthy protein= FULL and content
oatmeal= very very happy.
coffee= very very very very happy :)
no food= DONT COME NEAR ME. I might chew your head off or cry for no reason.
