favorite kitchen tools

June 24, 2011

It’s not surprise to you that I’m in the kitchen… a lot. Even more so now that summer has started, I find myself in the kitchen for multiple hours a day, relishing the fact that I had not had the freedom to do so during the school year. My favorite time to be in the kitchen is right after breakfast. I love baking something mid-morning only to have the house smell delicious – and the mid-morning nibbles aren’t so bad either.

Before I got married, I always felt confined to others’ schedules when I was in the kitchen. I would go to bake something, only to find that someone else wanted to use the oven. I would want to make dinner, but another family member would be in my way.

It was a pain in the behind.

I counted down the days and hours until I got married just so I could have my very own kitchen. For those of you who will scoff and say I have to share it with the Husband, I will just laugh at you. 1) He doesn’t ever want to use a kitchen appliance as long as he lives and 2) I don’t want him near my precious stuff.  We have an understanding that this is my sacred place – I’m still waiting for my sacred place to be well lit at night time with those can lights though. And if you’ve been a reader for a while, yes – I’m still waiting for them. ::sigh::

One of the most fun parts of having my own kitchen was stocking it with the tools and appliances I wanted. After reader Stacy asked me to share my favorite cooking/baking tools and appliances as she is getting a bridal registry together, I couldn’t resist!

Cutting boards – emphasis on the plural. I began with just one cutting board, which really just didn’t cut it (pun intended). I found myself getting so frustrated with the fact that the one cutting board I had was being washed every five minutes. I have two now, and sometimes I wish I had more.

Measuring Cups – I have two sets as well. I use my measuring cups so often that the measurements have faded away. A sign of a tool that is well loved! Your measuring cups don’t have to be anything fancy. I think ours are the OXO Good Grips brand from Bed, Bath, and Beyond.

Garlic Press – Can you believe I never used a garlic press until after I got married? It’s true. It’s also true that it is absolutely one of my top five favorite tools for the kitchen. I love garlic, and freshly minced garlic tops everything. It took me a while to figure out how to clean it – apparently I’m not the brightest bulb (pun intended once again) out there.

Glass Water Pitcher – Technically this doesn’t fall into the “tool” category, but I couldn’t live without my water pitcher. I have it on display in my kitchen hutch, and it always dresses up a dinner party instantly. I got this from Crate and Barrel for $20.

Ball Jars – I use these for everything, I kid you not. Coffee, smoothies, grains, oatmeal – you name it, I’ve used a ball jar for it. I got a pack of 12 from Ace Hardware for about $10, but they sell them everywhere!

Spatulas and Wooden Spoons – I love these two items. As you can see by the red stain on my wooden spoon, the last time I used it was when I was making beets. Wooden spoons are great because you can leave them near/in a pot while you’re cooking and they won’t burn/melt/etc.

Colorful Mixing/Serving Bowls – Love Love LOOOVE these bowls. I am honestly obsessed with them. I use them for everything – storage for items I don’t want to have laying around on the counters, during cooking/baking, and they also make a great serving dish. These are from Crate and Barrel.

Cuisinart Chop and Grind – While I do love this little appliance, I have to be honest with you. I wish I would have registered for a full sized food processor. I’m definitely regretting the fact that I only have this mini one at home, but if you are someone who does not do a lot of processing (?), this works wonderfully.

Calphalon Contemporary Nonstick 11-pc. Cookware Set

Calphalon Contemporary Nonstick 11-pc Cookware Set – I am so glad we opted to register for high end quality cookware. I love this line, and I definitely enjoy using the very deep sauté pan (far right in back) the most. I use it constantly!

Silpat – I just recently got this as a gift from my mom. I am in love with it. It is a silicone baking mat, and all of my baked goods have been coming out more evenly cooked since I got it!

Kitchen Aid Mixer – I for real do not know how I functioned without this in my kitchen for the first 23 years of my life. I use the mixer at least once a week for baked goods, bread dough, mashed potatoes, etc. I really can’t live without it.  Isn’t it pretty?

Things I didn’t get and wish I had:

  • Panini press
  • food processor
  • Vitamix (I am still accepting gifts)

I hope that was helpful Stacy! Blessings on your upcoming nuptials.

Wow. That sounded even dorkier when I read it out loud.

Question: What are your favorite kitchen tools?

Oh how I LOVE kitchen tools/gadgets! Some people laughed at my wedding registry because it was about 15 pages and all but 3 pages were filled with kitchen items! I agree on the ball jars - I use them to freeze peppers from our garden and they keep so well all year long. I also use them for oats, baked goods, and a million other things. I can’t live without my measuring cups, whisk, wooden spoon, spoonula, and my most favorite kitchen item EVER is…. the complete set of Le Creuset cookware I won. It.is.amazing. Great post!!!

A really good set of knives! So very important when chopping up veggies.

Amen about the glass pitcher and ball jars! However I have GOT to get me a Silpat! I hear of its amazingness all the time and need to see what the hype is all about!

My blender is my favorite kitchen item because without it there would be no smoothies.

One of my favorite kitchen appliances is my espresso machine. I make a “skinny” latte every morning…my little piece of heaven! I also use my Breville blender everyday.

you’re still waiting on those can lights?! tell him to get his butt in gear. or pretend you cut your finger ’cause it’s too dark ;)
i love all your suggestions!! as for glass jars…i currently have more than i know what to do with!! the pb i buy comes in glass jars and you know how fast i go through that. so i always wash them and keep them and now i have a whole bag full of glass jars just waiting to be filled with something yummy.
this is random and really small (as in, you’re better off buying it yourself and asking for the pricey stuff! :P ) but I love having a bench scrape!!

I love all of those tools too! And if ya have the chance… Get a panini press! They are fabulous!!! Grilled sandwiches are truly the best! I am with ya on wanting the vita mix!

I love my mixer too! No kitchen is complete without it! I really wish I would have registered for more pots and pans- mine are cheap and crappy, but I really don’t want to spend money on more right now.

I’m with you with wanting a big food processor. The little guy is perfect, but sometimes (always) I want to go bigger with my hummus batches.

PS - Is there a one sentence trick to the garlic press? I have the same one, I feel like most of the garlic just gets washed down the drain barely even mashed. Do you heat yours first?

I love my measuring spoons that say Smidge, Pinch, and Dash. I enjoy making grandma’s old recipes with these things.

Don’t you just love the silpat mats? I used to have a huge set of Calphalon cookware and gave it away. I have done research and heard they were not healthy for you to cook in. See: http://whfoods.org/genpage.php?tname=dailytip&dbid=92 I’m not sure how accurate this is but I brought out the stainless steel set I had. Let me know if you do any research on this. I’m in need of a new set =)

I’m a sucker for my Kitchen Aid blender…. Use it each and every day of my life since I’ve gotten it for my wedding. I use it in the morning, the husband is usually still in bed, he says it sounds like a jet plane taking off. (I am kind and wait as long as I possibly can to use it. I just NEED my blender in the morning)
Ooooo, oooo, oooo! I almost forgot. My milk frother thingy. Yes, I bet that is the technical name. I love to ‘eat’ milk (just because I can) ;)

Amanda @ Running with Spoons June 24, 2011 at 8:46 pm

Oh where would I be without my gadgets. Prolly the thing I use the most is my Magic Bullet. From grinding coffee beans to making smoothies, I use it multiple times a day. I have a Vitamix too, but I just find the Bullet to be so much more convenient and easier to clean.

I have those same exact Parker bowls from C&B! They are my absolute favorite. Probably the top 3 favorite things in my kitchen, alongside my KitchenAid and wood cutting board.

Lindsey June 24, 2011 at 9:00 pm

Vitamix by far (it was a wedding shower gift - everyone pooled together for it!), garlic press and my epicure ceramic knife.

I need to buy some ball jars, but i’m dying for the Silpat. I waste too much aluminum foil baking things…and I need a bigger food processor, I only have a little one too.

Courtney @ Sweet Tooth, Sweet Life June 24, 2011 at 9:34 pm

I have the same measuring cups and almost all of my measurements have worn off too. Jay can’t use them without me telling him what each cup is. ;)

I hear you on the food processor…I only have a little one and really wish I had a big one. I do, however, have a Griddler Jr. which works awesome for panini sandwiches. I LOVE them! :)

I love my garlic press too! It saves my hands from smelling like garlic all day! I definitely need to be getting me some colorful serving bowls. All my bowls are pretty boring!

Lauren June 24, 2011 at 9:38 pm

I would be LOST without my cuisanart. Seriously. But cutting boards, good pans, measuring cups and a spoonula are necessary in my life as well. I just got a silicone baking mat but have yet to use it. Bad of me considering how much I whined about getting one. I got a garlic press and while I’m really glad it minces my garlic for me, cleaning it out is just as much of a pain as just chopping garlic by hand was.

I have a red kitchenaid too! It is probaply one of the most used things in my kitchen next to my food processor and blender. I realllyyy want a vitamix though.

This is a really helpful post, thanks!

I love love my food scale. Baking without the measuring cup cleanup, I don’t know how I functioned without it.

Thanks Chelsey! I’ll be adding a second cutting board to the registry for sure. Also I’m thinking about adding the Kitchen Aid Mixer too. The soon-to-be hubby does all the “fancy” cooking around our house, so if anything he would be the one using it the most.

Seriously, your kitchen is an exact copy of how I want mine to be when I get my own place! Can I move in please?! I promise not to mess with stuff too much! ;)

Great list! I’m getting ready to get my own place and this list really helps. In the kitchen things like cutting board, retractable tsp & tbsp measuring spoons, stainless steel mixing bowls and my blender are my top picks.

I have a mini food processor and I really wish I had a bigger one too. It’s so annoying to have to process big recipes in batches!

I completely agree with all your favourite kitchen tools. Except I don’t really have a good set of mixing bowls. I think a trip to Crate & Barrel is needed. ;)

I love my KitchenAid!! I’ve been saying for years that a red KitchenAid mixer would be my perfect appliance. My boyfriend got me one for Christmas, and it definitely is a dream!!! I have the ice cream maker attachment too!

Oh my gosh I really want a panini press!!! Also I have a Blendtec, which is like a Vitamix but a different brand and it was from Costco so not very expensive. :)

When my husband was in highschool he sold Cutco knives and had a whole set of them which are now mine (because I’m the mom and I say so) and I love them. they remind me of the nice ones I used when I worked at Little Caesars. We (I say we because my husband loves to bake) would love a Kitchen Aid Mixer, the hand held ones are a pain when your trying to make candy.

Okay, call me dumb, but how DO you clean your garlic press??? I usually let water drain through the little holes and poke it with a fork (like I imagine Julia Child, or Nigella Lawson would do…) - but there must be an easier way!!

I want a Kitchen Aid, and a Vitamix, so soo badly! Someday…somedayy

If you flip it entirely inside out, the side with the red dots fits into the holes and it cleans it out!

I don’t know what I’d do without my chef’s knife. It took me a long, long time to realize that a high quality SHARP knife makes a world of difference in the kitchen! I also love my pots and pans set that I got from Pampered Chef…heavy, sturdy bottoms and super easy to clean non-stick surfaces!

And I’m right there with you on the Vitamix!
