august goals

August 1, 2011

Rabbit Rabbit!

Am I the only one out there who read Babysitter’s Little Sisters books when I was younger?

Yeah, I thought so.

In any case, it’s August. The month of back to school shopping, heat so hot you can’t breathe when you walk out the door, going back to work, and beginning my sleep deprived life for the next 10 months. Bring it on.

July was a huge month — I honestly cannot believe it went by so quickly. However, in reality, a lot went down!

Busy month, wouldn’t you agree?

Yesterday when I was reflecting on July, I thought about the upcoming month. I’m usually not one to make monthly “goals” per se, but something about this month makes me want to. Perhaps it’s because I know my life is going to get busy again really soon — and writing down goals seems to make me feel accountable for what happens in my life.

The thing about goals as well is that sometimes I feel like people make too many goals at once. Having two or three good solid goals over a period of thirty days is enough — staying focused is key for me. If I have too many goals, I will get frustrated and give up — kind of like Charlie when he can’t reach the peanut butter in the middle of his bone.

Become a more patient person.

Well that’s about the most broad goal in the world, don’t you think?

Patience + Me = Not so tight

(source)

Which is funny because I’m a teacher. When it comes to being patient, I can be patient with people I am not necessarily very “close” to. When it comes to my family though… watch out. There have been far too many times lately where I find myself getting angry and losing patience with my mom, the Husband, and my niece and nephew. This is something I want to continue to consciously make an effort to change. I have a mouth that likes to run wild — and sometimes, not thinking before I speak ends up hurting people, which I really don’t like.

I have a feeling someone is going to have to get out the duct tape for my mouth.

Continue to work on my marriage.

Hold on, hold on, hold on… no, we are not in marital turmoil. Marriage is kind of like your car (the Husband would be so proud of me for this comparison). You are constantly maintaining your car — getting it gas, running it through a car wash, getting the oil changed, rotating the tires, etc. Marriage is the same way. You can’t expect to have a perfect marriage without doing any work.

(source)

So this month, I am going to make a conscious effort to be more respectful (imagine that — me being disrespectful?) when I speak, which includes not talking back or saying smart ass remarks when they are not needed and encouraging my Husband when he needs it the most. I am a really stubborn person and like to think I am right for the most part, so this is going to be H-A-R-D for me.

Run 60 miles and strength train at least two times a week.

I was going to make this goal harder — and then I thought to myself that wouldn’t be a good idea with school starting again. I have a hard enough time strength training twice a week, so maintaining that over the next month will be difficult. I’m getting ready to knock out 6.5 of those miles this morning!

There you have it — two personal and one fitness goal for the month of August. I was thinking about making a “don’t spend so much money on back to work clothes” goal, but that just seemed pointless. And I don’t want to meet that goal. Sorry Husband. (See? I’m apologizing! I’m getting better already.)

Question: Did you make any August goals? What would you like to accomplish?

Ah-actually. I never make goals but I really feel like I needed to for August because my month was so strange and busy. Not what I really wanted. Strength training is at the top of my list though too!

My August goal is to make it through my last month of pregnancy without going completely crazy from exhaustion, heat and a giant belly ;)

I’m looking forward to having athletic goals again!

I totally read Babysitters Little Sister books! Anything to get a kid to read, right?

I haven’t made any goals for myself this month… but I might think it over today and come up with a couple - it’s always good to be motivated toward something!

I used to love the Babysitter’s little sister books! I had a huge collection and referred to them as “Karen books” haha. Glad to find another fan!

Great goals, I would have skipped the one about the school clothes too…. Hey, the kids get new back to school clothes. WHY CAN’T WE?!?!?!?! It only seems fair! ;) Maybe a donation jar outside the classroom on open house night….. At least I’d decorate the jar all cute like! HA!

Definitely read the Babysitters Little Sister books, her name was Karen! :D I loved reading books about someone with the same name as me. I think I even read all of them(30-40?).

My goal for August is to do more cooking(always) and revamp my blog.

There are actually 122 of them and 6 Super SPecials. No, I didn’t know that off the top of my head, but I think I owned about 90 of them!

I am with you on the patience thing! I always explain it by saying I use up all of my patience with my students each day, that there’s really none left for my family!

My August goals: not to take myself too seriously. I tend to be too structured (with my schedule..my eating…exercising..) though I feel life would be more enjoyable if I could just be more spontaneous.

I also plan to continue to work on my 2011 goal of being “more present” in my daily life- not take things for granted and just truly enjoy being alive and all the glory that offers.

Best of luck working towards your goals!

I love doing monthly goals! This month is going to be busy for me too. August is always crazy with school starting again. My big goal this month is to not let my stress/busy schedule get the best of me. I want to maintain a positive attitude and get everything done with a smile.

Meg August 1, 2011 at 9:53 am

Ahh I can’t believe it is August!!!
My goals for this month:
1. Do some major article reading for my masters thesis
2. Do some major work on my PhD apps
3. Enjoy my family vacation time since I don’t see them that often
4. be better at my half marathon training! I am a wimp when it comes to running in the heat so this one has been hard!

I need to work on the patience as well; I seem to find my fists clenches up in tight little balls more often than I would like to admit!

I’m not really one to make monthly goals either, but August DOES feel kind of special. Maybe it’s because the first day of it also happens to be a Monday… fresh starts all around! That being said, I still didn’t make any specific goals  Mostly I’ll just be focusing on packing up my stuff and getting everything in order before I move in mid September.

Second, I can’t wait to make the date syrup you posted!!! Look out maple syrup- I might have a replacement for you :)

Third, I usually don’t set goals. I don’t know what it is, but I just don’t like doing it. I always make my students do it though! I should set a goal to be more organized and efficient with planning meals and workouts though!

A couple of my goals for this month:
daily Bible study every single day
encouraging, supporting, and helping Daniel as he searches for a different job
RUN!

I make goals every month (earlier I posted my August goals), and every week! I’m a huge goal person. It’s the only way i keep sane! I seriously can’t believe it’s already August…but that means back to school shopping, just another reason to buy another 10 outfits we don’t need. Right? :)

I need to work on patience, too. With my students, I can literally put up with anything they say or do… But my husband, family, and friends? Hell no. I have a problem :/

Katelyn @ Chef Katelyn August 1, 2011 at 11:48 am

Happy Bunny Bunny Dayyyy!!

I need to become more patient too — and UNDERSTANDING. The man friend doesn’t always “get” certain things that bother me, or I don’t always “get” when he’s trying to be funny (and I think he’s just being a dick even though he’s not), so I need to keep putting myself in his shoes and realizing that if I were saying the same thing, I would be in a totally different mindset than what I imagined.

My goal: START WORKING OUT AGAIN!! While I was up at my lakehouse in the booneys I worked out um two times. Go me!

Katie @ peacebeme August 1, 2011 at 12:15 pm

My goals for the month are:
- survive new student orientation (I’m one of my university’s orientation coordinators, so this month is go-time for me!)
- adhere to healthy eating and cement a few habits in that area
- stay within my budget
- expand my circles of friendship to include people that I would normally find intimidating…insecurities, be gone!

I love that you are consciously working on your marriage now rather than waiting till things start showing “wear-and-tear” ten years down the road or so. Good luck with your goals!

Your goals sound awesome! :) I can totally relate to the first one. I tend to snap pretty easily and I have said some really hurtful things at times. I actually made one step towards being better this weekend when I finally got the courage to apologize to my manfriend’s dad for being very snotty to them at times. I am currently trying to think of my August goals because I am with you-I think last month I set too many goals and then I couldn’t focus on what I wanted to accomplish.

Kaitlyn@TheTieDyeFiles August 1, 2011 at 5:04 pm

The boyfriend and I had a little chat recently about how we were both losing patience with each other. It’s amazing how much it can help just to voice your feelings! I have a couple blog and photography related goals for August, and I also need to get more serious about my marathon training! No way I’m going to mess this up.

And I think clothes are justified…gotta look classy right? :)

Great goals for this month. I know with teaching I have a ton of patience for my students, I never get annoyed, or at kids in general. But, I can get grumpy around people close to me (especially when I’m trying to have some down time), so I feel you on working on that. Good luck with the 60 miles, that’s a great one! I set some goals for this month for travel, moving, and budgeting.
