So this is when I tell you about how I had written out half of this post and then my computer decided to get all crazy. No, for real — the screen went a bunch of pretty colored lines that kind of reminded me of poltergeist, and now I’m here trying to think of everything I had written before my computer went crazy.
It started like this:
Guess what!
That was a rhetorical question. Because really, when I think about it you probably don’t answer my questions out loud when I ask them during posts. But you should. You should probably just tweet your answer. Or answer me in my comments. Or not answer them at all — because really, who talks out loud to their computer screen? Weird.
Glad we got that awkward conversation out of the way.
Now… let’s try that again.
Guess what! (insert you not answering me here)
I decided to go 100% raw vegan.
And this is when I laugh because your jaws are on the floor because I’m totally just joking.
What I do have is the tools to go 100% raw if I really wanted to now.
For a while now (read: forever) I have really wanted to get a dehydrator. The ability to make all kinds of raw treats (like these… or these.. and ooo these look really good) intrigued me and made me pine for a dehydrator just a little bit more.
So when the folks over at Excalibur Dehydrators sent me one of their 5 tray dehydrators, I was elated! Actually, I squealed! (just a little bit)
For someone who has minimal experience with dehydrators, this product is really easy to use. You basically plug it in, turn it to the temperature of your choice (I keep it in between 110 and 115 degrees), and dehydrate away!
So far I have done a lot of dehydrating vegetables (my 10 pounds of zucchini to start with).
I also made my raw flax crackers, which were so easy to make it was laughable!
I have also made raw bagels, which is a recipe from the Vegan Cafe, so sorry — I won’t post it! But, I can promise you they’re delicious.
The thing I love about dehydrating foods is that because the foods are not being heated above a certain temperature, the nutrients in the foods are not damaged. Raw food = healthy food!
I have big plans for this baby (who is still nameless — I used up all my good names on Bertha), and can’t wait to make macaroons, cookies, and granola.
Thanks again Excalibur for giving me this opportunity!
Question: Have you ever used a dehydrator? What is your favorite thing to make?
This dehydrator was sent to me courtesy of Excalibur to try out and review. All opinions expressed about the product are 100% my own feelings and views.

I love raw foods and want to get a dehydrator someday (once I have more counter space)
I always do the “heat your oven to low and let ____ cook for a million hours or until golden brown”. A dehydrator would be much easier!
I’ve always wanted to use one! I’d love to do fruits and raw crackers… and I know Hubbs would love to make some jerky out of his venison… but that’s not very raw/vegan friendly
Fun! I’d love to do this with fruit and veggies!
I want a dehydrator soooo bad!! There are so many raw treats I want to make!! Maybe I need to start looking for some on craigslist or amazon!
So cool! I’ve always wanted a dehydrator… it would turn my granola making into something so much more simple plus dehydrated granola is AMAZING!
I actually hadn’t heard about dehydrators until this summer! Sounds like a fun tool to use though. Can’t wait to see what you make with it!
I am sooooo jealous! That bad boy is my dream machine! I will own one someday - oh yes! For now, my mother’s dehydrator for 1982 is still working just fine… LOL
This is soo cool
I am very jealous!
Yay for free stuff (especially free stuff you actually WANT)!
Can’t wait to see how you use it.
I love making cheesy Kale chips even if they only last like an hour!
Because I’m kooky, I think I’d throw a little of everything and anything in there just to see what happens… lol
I have a dehydrator, but I’ve never used it because I haven’t bought the sheets/screens for it. However, I have made a DIY fruit leather. I actually wrote an article for our paper about it:

To make it healthier, you can also use pureed fruit. I hope you’ll do some posts about dehydrating because it’s hard to find bloggers who have them!
I Just found Out my dad has a dehydrator That he has used like 3 times and is willing to let me “test it out!” Yay! I Really wanna try dehydrating fruit!
That’s awesome!!
Gah seriously?? A dehydrator FOR FREE??? OMG I’m jealous. I want to dehydrate fruit. And crackers. And kale chips because I keep burning them in the oven. I bought one for the boyfriend for his birthday so he could make beef jerky (ew) and I’ve been jealous ever since!
Well get over there and get your dehydrating on!
I bought a cheap one at Marshalls but after three months of not using it, I turned around and sold it…I love the idea of raw food but I guess I’m more of a comfort foods gal (with a few salads thrown in for raw measure, lol)
holey pajamas!! A free dehydrator! Luuucky (said in Napoleon Dynamite voice).
bahaha I love Napoleon!
I’ve been dying for a dehydrator!! Can’t wait to see what you create. Oh and you should definitely make macaroons, even though I’ll be so jealous! lol
I’ve never used a dehydrator but I’m so curious now! I’m sure you’ll have lots of fun experimenting with it
It has been a very long time since I used a dehydrator. We had one awhile ago that was used to make jerky and I believe we attempted to dry some fruit as well.
Have fun playing with your new toy!
I’ve had one of these for a few years now, and I’m kind of embarrassed to admit that it’s been sitting under a pile of old clothes in the basement forever. I used to be really into the whole raw vegan thing, but it ended really badly for me so I pretty much put everything that I associated with it into storage. I do sometimes get the urge to whip it out again and try making some raw snacks, but for how much time and effort it takes, I’m not all that convinced that it’s worth it anymore.
I love new tools!
and I’m kind of beyond excited for you to make macaroons, I love them too
How exciting! My dad was gifted the very same dehydrator. However he never used it yet. I would love to see some of your recipes on here so I can give it a try. I am a Vegan and was interested in going raw as well.
We always had one around growing up…. Love the dried apples and such! I bet now that I’m more of a foodie I would LOVE to have this toy! -Although I’m not sure what the husband would think of a new toy in my kitchen. Boys just don’t understand!!! —Naming this baby may be tough! I’ll think on that!
Hello! I have wanted a dehrydrator for the longest time! This may have to go on my Christmas list - a little early haha
Yes I have a dehyd and although it’s a fabulous tool, I dont use that particular tool as much these days b/c of the very in-advance planning time, i.e. 4 to 24+ hrs in advance. I use the oven more. That said, the kale chip recipes on my site (both cheezy and chocolate coconut and the vegan GF crackers) are all good and easy

I actually bought a Cabela’s dehydrator this year — it has 24 LEVELS!! Crazy I know — but the things I like about it are that it is digital and it is counter height, so it actually provides more counter space (I use my vitamix on top of it), and it has a glass door so you can see in without letting out heat. Everyone who sees it thinks it’s a wine cooler
I love the Excalibur too, I gave mine to my sister
I see that Cabela has a 10 rack option now which is interesting…you just have to get past the shooting/hunting website!

Oh you are going to have some much fun trying all new recipes and ideas. I am very jealous!
SO jealous. I was just on amazon.com yesterday looking at dehydrators because I’ve recently started expanding to more raw food, but I decided the financial commitment was still a little too much. Still, good to hear it’s great so far.
I’ve actually only heard of a dehydrator once, when I was reading a recipe for making Kale Chips! I have no idea what kind of stuff you can make with one!
Can’t wait to see all the goodies you make with this! I don’t have a dehydrator mostly b/c I can’t justify another kitchen gadget taking up more counter space but I am always jealous of the goodies that come out of them in blog land.
Me = jealous!!!! Can’t wait to see what you come up with
now THAT is cool. I’ve never dehydrated anything, and I’m now counting on you to teach me how.
I have never used a dehydrator before, but after reading this I really want to! Does it really make them dry though?? Like a grape to a raisin dry??
Wow that is so cool! I bet you’ll have so much fun with that thing. Can’t wait to see what you come up with
oh em geeee I’m in love with your new toy! I totally checked them out on Amazon a few months ago and that’s a purchase I can’t wait to make…once I have a big girl job :p
So you can still have oats?
Otherwise I’d be getting pretty concerned for your psychological wellbeing right now.
haha yes yes oats stay!
I’ve never used one - and I think I’d do more harm than good! They seem a little complicated
I’m still trying to master the oven and the crock pot. Don’t judge me.
AHHH I am so jealous! I’ve wanted a dehydrator for ages. I’ve never used one, but I’m pretty sure I’d get along just fabulously with it…
Ahh, how awesome! I’ve never used a dehydrator before but I would love to try to make raw crackers and cookies. I can’t wait to see all the stuff you make with yours!
Fruit leather, for sure!
I make zucchini chips every single week. Last week, I made cucumber chips too. I can’t decide which I like better….
I love my excalibur!!
oh you will love your dehydrator!! I remember when lori and I first got ours, we did not use it for 3 months, and now we use it all the time
