Where do you buy your gluten free products?
I could get my products at most grocery stores sell gluten free products, but to be perfectly honest with you, I’d rather keep my arm and my leg for another purchase someday. So, I scope out the places with the best prices on products.
Online: gluten free oats and flours on Amazon, iHerb, or Swanson’s
Trader Joe’s: pasta (and now there are rumors that there are gluten free oats there as well)
Whole Foods: bulk items like quinoa and rice
Costco: Crunchmaster crackers
And when I’m in a pinch, I can always go up the road to Jewel and buy flour but it’s really expensive and I would rather not do that. I also don’t buy too many “gluten free” products — most of the time I’ll make my own baked goods, crackers, etc — because I’m on a budget and they are costly. And in reality, most gluten free products out there aren’t even really a “healthier” option if you read the label. I usually just focus on whole foods and making my own snacks.
Do you buy gluten free bread or make it yourself?
If I buy it, it is not very often. I usually buy brands like Rudi’s multigrain sandwich bread or Food for Life Brown Rice Tortillas.
Very early on in my gluten free days, I got comfortable cooking with yeast so I could make my own breads.
I found the very best gluten free sandwich bread recipe and make it once every few months (I’m not really a sandwich kind of girl). I always store my breads and baked goods in the freezer after about a day because gluten free products can go rancid pretty quickly. That way, it stays fresh and I don’t have to feel like I have to use it up all in a couple of days. When I want to use a piece of bread or I want a baked good, I either take it out to thaw or toast it so it doesn’t crumble.
What kind of beauty products do you use?
I always think it’s funny when people ask me questions like this because when it comes to hair and makeup, I am so low maintenance it is ridiculous. I did a skin care and makeup routine video blog in the beginning of the summer, and I also followed it up with a hair video blog as well. If you have ever wanted to hear my voice (believe me, it’s not that great) or see my weirdness on camera, they’re kind of a must see. But, if you want the low down without having to go watch me talk about myself for twenty minutes, I use some of the following products — in my hair I use:
- Pureology Volumizing Shampoo and Conditioner (I am starting to use it tomorrow actually — I’ll let you know how I like it!)
- Thicker Mousse
- Paul Mitchell Fast Drying Sculpting Spray
- Coconut oil for deep conditioning once every few weeks (smear a few tablespoons of the good stuff in my hair and let it sit for 15-30 minutes — wash hair normally!)
On my face I use:
My face is really oily and tends to break out and it hasn’t really been doing anything for my skin in the past month of so. Does anyone have any recommendations for an all natural/organic product?
My makeup includes:
- Mary Kay products
- Bare Escentuals
What workouts are you doing before school?
Ugh — the dreaded morning workout. Did you really have to remind me about that?
Actually, I kind of like it. Sure, when my alarm clock goes off at 4:15 every morning, I kind of want to hurt myself. But, by the time I get to the gym and start working out, I have forgotten all about my bed (wishful thinking) and am wide awake (really!). Last year I would really crash on the way home from work, but I’ve been really great and my energy levels have been high all day long. I don’t know what I am doing differently, but I’ll take it. I’ve been following some sort of routine in the mornings just so I know what to expect when I get there.
Monday: 3 mile tempo run + ab work
Tuesday: Full Body Weights + ab work
Wednesday: easy 3 miles + ab work
Thursday: 30 minutes cross training or 15 minutes with 20 minutes full body weights + ab work
Friday: 3 mile run or rest depending on my running schedule for the weekend + ab work
When I say ab work, I mean like five minutes of different exercises. I don’t spend nearly as much time on my abs as I should… and I really don’t care. There, I said it.
If I’m really feeling tired, I will definitely take a day off. There is always later if I feel like doing a workout. I usually take Charlie for a 1.5 — 2 mile walk after school as well.
Question: What are some more questions you want answered? OR What workouts are you currently doing right now?

good for you for getting up at 4:15 to workout every morning. I struggle getting up at 5:45. I love to run outside, so I am very disappointed that the days are getting shorter!
I am currently getting into running, and taking a few yoga classes here and there. Also practicing at home. Need to gain my flexibility back! I was a dancer all my life.
I watched your videos the first time around and loved em! Round 2 of CEC videos! Thanks for the reminder!
I wondered what you did before school… I try to get in a two or 2.5 mile run in before I go to school. So far, so good! ….I’m so proud of myself…
yay! go you!
Hey i have a really random question. I have recently fell in love with white potatoes again. i was wondering if you have heard weather or not you can eat them raw. I have heard of people biting in to them like apples (obviously after you peel them). Do you think this is bad for your digestive system? I am having trouble finding research online.
I don’t think that would even taste good. I’m not sure on the research, but I like my potatoes cooked!
they do taste better that is for sure. i was just wondering if it was simply like broccoli cooked vs raw (edible both ways just with more flavor when cooked). or more like quinoa cooked vs raw (entirely indigestible raw). oh well. thanks : )
Gotcha - I’m not sure if they would be good for you if you would eat them raw or not!
Ah your voice sounds totally different than I expected for some reason!
I wish I could get up before school to go to the gym but A) I leave for school at 6:30/6:40 & B) My gym only opens at 5:00… so there’s no way I’d be able to work out, shower, get ready & still leave at the same time!
I’ve still been hitting the gym in the evening, even though it makes my nights seem super busy!
Holy crap, Chelsey! And I thought I was crazy, errr dedicated, for waking up at 4:45 to workout!
The Costco crackers sound good! I haven’t even heard of them before
Thanks for the bread machine recipe, I’ve been looking for one!!! And I cannot wait to try coconut oil in my hair. Do you like Bare Escentuals? I want to try it, I literally have zero makeup. Like threw mine out yesterday.
I loooove Food for Life brown rice tortillas! I used to get so upset when I’d try to make a wrap with them and they’d fall apart on me, but now I’ve smartened up and just fold the darn thing in half. Peanut butter and chia seeds on one is one of my fav breakfasts!
I kind of miss being at the gym so early - I miss that feeling of productivity before everyone else I know is awake.
I’ve been doing a lot of speedwork with my running lately, and I’m liking it!
love the GF info and your thoughts
Costco: Crunchmaster crackers = never heard of those. are they worth a trip to costco just for those? b/c honestly , i never go in there b/c im too tempted to buy a 5 gallon container of chex mix that i clearly dont need type of thing
You can get the crunchmaster crackers at other stores by the specialty crackers, but I get them from Costco because of the bulk size!
Yeah, “ab work” takes a total of 5 minutes for me too. I just can’t enjoy it. But 5 minutes is better than nothing, right?
Eee I don’t know how you do it girl. I can’t do the early morning workout thing, and lately it seems like I can’t even do the morning workout. I used to do it right before lunch when I could fit it in, but lately I’m finding that I get a better workout in in the early evenings… I guess my body just needs more time to warm up and wake up
My current fave workouts are AMRAP (as many rounds as fast as possible) workouts. They’re super intense but smash through calories like nothing else. Other than that I’m training for my first ever half marathon in 19 days so I’m panicking about that a bit. Ok, a lot. I’m going for a 16k run this weekend and I’ll increase gradually from there.
You’ve done a half marathon haven’t you Chelsey? What did you eat beforehand? I’ll be starting at 6am but leaving the house at 4.30 to get there on time.
I have done 2 half marathons - and I ate a normal breakfast before I went. Even though it was insanely early, I didn’t want to ruin my morning routine because 1) I didn’t want to get sick before the race and 2) I wanted to ensure a bathroom visit that morning if you know what I mean.
the face products i use are from doterra’s essential oil line… i would HIGHLY recommend checking it out! it has done wonders for my face and people tell me all the time!! https://www.iact1.com/doterra/ShoppingCart/Shop.cfm?CurrPage=FrontPage&NextPage=CategoryDetail&CategoryID=93&pid=46248620186995503
Rumors of GF oats at TJ’s=TRUE (and only 3.99 for a bag instead of the $6 I was spending on Bob’s Red mill, humph).
AND- if you have any asian markets around, go there for SUPER inexpensive GF flours! Rice flour, tapioca flour/starch, potato starch- all extremely inexpensive!!!
Dang that is so early! What time do you have to be at school? I don’t have to be there until 7:45; our school day starts at 8am. I usually get up at 5:45 to get my run/workout in. You are so dedicated! I could never do it at 4:15am.
Haha I’m the same way about my ab work! I do it for like 2 minutes and then give up.
Right now for workouts I run on Monday, cross training + weights on Tuesday, run on Thursday and maybe run on Saturday if I feel motivated enough to go before work. I can’t wait until I’m done my summer job so that I can get back to a better workout schedule!
hi!
i have been reading your blog but never commented.. i love your writing style and especially your posts about self esteem and balance and etc..
just wanted to tell you about this line i use called Suki Advanced Organic Science.. they have skincare that is natural and vegan and works wonders! i am no vegan but i used it when my skin was flaring up because it i’m so sensitive and i need natural.. this stuff is amazing! expensive but worth it. i live in canada so don’t know where you would find it there, but i got it at a health food store in the beauty section.
and i love ab work! could do tons of it… cardio gets boring for me though..
also, i was wondering about overnight oats? i read about them on different blogs, including yours.. what is the point of them? just for cold oatmeal?? just curious
It’s pretty inspiring to hear about your morning workouts - I need to get in to that habit because after school I am just exhausted!
I love pureology! I just started using the shampoo/conditioner for blondes; it comes in a light yellow bottle. I’ve used the volumizing and liked it but didn’t love the scent. And in case you didn’t know, you need a tiny amount of the product.
I’ve been finding I need waaay less than I usually use! It’s thick!
