in the box… week 5

December 9, 2011

Another week, another box.

December 1, 2011 003
I cannot tell you how impressed I am week after week with Genesis Growers. Honestly, if you live in the area, you should really consider taking part in one of their CSA programs. I may or may not be very upset that the winter share is almost over.

Just another late night photo shoot in the CEC household. Are you blinded by the light?

This week’s box was full of goodies, but we are not getting our bi-weekly eggs until next week. We received an email from our farm saying the delivery worker slipped on ice when he was carrying the eggs. Yikes! Thankfully he’s okay and it was just our eggs that were broken. I think we’ll survive until next week.

Cabbage, Spaghetti Squash, and Red Kuri Squash (which I have never had). The squash resembles a kabocha on the outside, so I am looking forward to seeing what it tastes like!

December 8, 2011 001

We also received four apples and a huge bag of yellow, orange, and purple (!!!!) carrots. Thankfully I have my celeriac from last week soon, so I have a feeling some soup will be on the menu next week!

December 8, 2011 004

The last two items we received were three onions and three turnips, which our farm suggested roasting. I don’t know if I’ve ever roasted a turnip before!

Bird’s eye view.

And in case you’re wondering, I am fully aware that half of these pictures were upside down. I thought it would make a post about the vegetables I received this week a little more interesting. Plus I’m sure it made your brain work a little bit harder to imagine the pictures right side up.

Nothing like a little brain workout first thing in the morning!

Those apples look gorgeous. Gala or Braeburn? Or neither perhaps! Gala apples are amazing at the moment. Nothing like a crisp sweet juicy apple :)

I’ve been told that jealousy isn’t very becoming, but I am jealous of your gas stove!

And the vegetables. I’m working through a leftover store-bought veggie platter.

All of those carrots look like they’re begging to be roasted - or soup-ified. :)

I was so busy looking at the awesome fruits and vegetables I didn’t even notice the pictures were upside down :)

Purple carrots! I’ve always been tempted in the grocery store to buy some vegetables that are different colors, but I never do.

I love your veggies but love seeing a pic of your kitchen lit up with your lighting setup even more. Feels so behind the scenes and I love it.

I dont bother with lights. I have lightroom. One 1/8th of an inch with my mouse and I created light. Not perfect but easier than hauling out lights. lol I wish it was natural light and sunny 24 hours a day though!

We received a bunch of turnips over the course of our winter CSA this year too. I peeled, sliced, and roasted them…it was the first time I ever tried turnips and they. were. amazing. Seriously. I didn’t even season them — just drizzled them with olive oil and popped them in the oven to roast. Delicious. :)

Haha. I didn’t even notice they were upside down! What does that say about my brain?!? I love your weekly CSA veggie goodies posts! I don’t know why, but I feel like I am opening a package, even though I don’t actually recieve any of the produce!

I’m so jealous of all those winter veggies! I’m starting to think I may like winter veg even better than summer ones. Never tried turnip though so I can’t wait to see what you do with it. :D

Roasted turnips are delicious! Like roasted parsnips, my other fave roasted veggie. Yum! I love the idea of a CSA but can’t imagine I’d get through the box - I’d worry there’d be too much leftover waste!

Wow, I need to pay attention more often! I had no idea the pictures were upside down until you mentioned it. They looked a little weird to me, but I didn’t know why. LOL

I have serious vegetable envy right now! However, our turnips and carrots are really starting to come in (yay for winter gardens!). You must roast the turnips - it is the best! It brings out a slightly sweet taste to them that is so so good. I hope you enjoy your veggies!

The kuri is really similar to kabocha…the longer you let it sit, the sweeter it gets. They don’t have pumpkins really here in Germany, but kuri is a great substitute! It tastes great if you roast it and serve it with a coconut curry sauce. Yum!
